Apple mail - account is offline - refuses to go online
I use apple mail to connect to multiple accounts. One of them went offline on Friday and refuses to come back on.
The account is fully functional, because it's still working fine on iPhone, iPad and through Outlook 2011.
It's like once apple mail decides an account is offline, that's it.
Is there a solution?

Apple Mail account suddenly offline, smtp offline
iMac 27" (late 2009) updated to Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Apple Mail 8.0 (1990.1) 17th October 2014.
Mail accounts in Apple Mail where working as years before until Yesterday, 3th November 2014. Suddenly 2 out of 3 accounts where offline showing the warning triangle icon on the right. Command "go online" and "syncronize" has no effect. Activity in Mail is showing no try to connect. Looking into the account config I see that the SMTP are "offline".
I checked everything and compared to the settings of the one account which is still normal working. Everything is identically set up. Only differences are the domain names, username and pwd. The domain names are on the same external virtual hosts and have same configs. The on the iMac faulty accounts are working on iPad and iPhone like ever and from the same internal network. My hardware firewall or the external mailserver can not be the reason.
I deleted 1) SMTP config, 2) whole mail account, 3) all corresponding keys in keychain and was setting up from new. No chance, they show SMTP offline and do not go online in IMAP. Next was trying to give account #1 the SMTP from the working #3. The SMTP #3 shows fine but near the inbox of account #1 i have again the warning triangle. No go online, no sync, no action in the activity window.
I go setting up Mail with these accounts in a new user. Mail was totally empty as I started config of two accounts. After doing all they where at the same point. No connection possible.
Why is this happend suddenly and after more than 2 weeks after Yosmite update? Why is one account working, two others not anymore?Sorry, just found the details. Here we go:

Apple Mail 2.0 POP refuses to pull Gmail
I am an Apple tech, but this one is stumping me, my client is using Apple Mail 2.1.3 on Tiger 10.4.11, has been using Apple Mail for years, has a paid pro gmail account, her ISP wanted her to move from their servers because of the spam filtering, yesterday they changed the MX records, I configured the account, she is getting mail now at gmail fine, I can see all messages sent after their MX change, I have configured gmail and my Apple client settings, I can send mail from Apple mail and I know my up and down setting are good as Apples Connection doctor shows OK, I have read and reread AND Googled the problem, gone over gmails - Google Help › Gmail Help › POP› Apple Mail 3.0 20 times and it still refused to pull mail. POP is set correctly on gmail, Status: POP is enabled for all mail
that has arrived since Sep 18, Gmail is picking up all mail and filtering spam beautifully from any account including mail sent to self, It just will not pass it to the Apple mail account, if you hit get mail in the Apple account it looks for about 10 seconds and stops.Three days ago my mail program searched for my mail to download from various accounts, it would not stop. I have set my accounts up on another MAC computer and they are downloaded fine on that computer ( a friends MAC) From that I deduce the problem is with my mail program? I have deleted the files as you have mentioned and have run disk utility. It starts getting the mail and then does not stop searching. I have to then force quit my mail program. Any ideas to how can repair this? Thanks. Anton

I can't seem to get gmail from my apple mail account. I have removed the account and added it, but it says I have the wrong password. I close gmail and get in just fine. What's up?
I meant that I sign out, sign back in ok. Ergo, I know my password. Someone here on the support page (you?) told me the culprit is the 2 step verification process which I had on. That makes a lot of sense as Apple mail won't get a code thereby jamming up the process. I could not even start a new account until I took that 2 step process off. Everything fine now thank you.

How can I bring my (Apple) Mail accounts (including Mail Boxes, messages, signatures, etc) across to my new MacBookPro?
Migration Assistant will help you transferring the data from your old Mac to your new one. If you haven't set up your computer, it will ask you to restore files from another computer, so follow the steps. You can select what you want to restore to the new Mac. The same for Migration Assistant.
If you have already set up your Mac, Migration Assistant will create a new user with the migrated data, so you have to log in that user and you will access to your files, including mail addresses. See > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html -
IPOD TOUCH & APPLE MAIL ACCOUNT
I Updated software to 4.0 on my 8 GB IPod Touch and when I did the apple mailbox on the touch does not show the sent, trash or junk folders.
How do I get them back? Now all I show in the Apple mail account is the in box.
This however is not true of my Yahoo Account. It kept all 17 folders that I have in that account including the sent, trash & junk folders.
Road Runner is my internet provider
Mahalo (thanks)
the coconut wirelessI have the same issue. At least we know it not just us. I did have issues when upgrading. My iPod immediately went through a restore after installing the upgrade but couldn't complete due to an error. Couldn't sync music due to "could not be found". Restarted the computer and it solved that problem. Don't know if I can restore but don't need to now.
Supposedly another update is coming this week to fix the bugs. Then another will release to fix the new bugs and so on. Such is life with software. -
Hi
Mail has suddenly started showing all my accounts as offline, they all have the exclamation mark next to them. When I click on it I get the message that Mail can't connect to the server on port xxx. I select 'take all accounts online' and they remain offline.
I have restarted my Mac and removed all plug-ins (MailTags, Spamsieve etc) and tried again, the same thing happens.
All other Internet connections are fine.
I launched and configured GyazMail and that too works fine, no problems, as does Powermail and Mail Pilot.
I tried repairing the keychain, no difference
It would seem, therefore, that the problem lies with the Mail app. Has anyone any ideas what may be going on here and have any suggestions as to how I might get Mail back up running again? I tried moving the account plist and adding a new account, it still showed as offline as before, I have put the old plist back for the time being.
Many thanks

Check with Connection Doctor to see why the accounts are offline. It could be an issue with password or a change in incoming and outgoing server information.

Mail accounts are offline after update
Hi, I just updated to osx 10.6.4
The new mail 4.3 causes problems now. I have 7 mail accounts set up and since I updated I always have two accounts that seems to be offline. When I hit the stamp it sometimes changes the accounts that are offline.
No account is really offline, so that is a bug. Apple hotline can't help. I tried every setting, I created accounts again. Nothing works.
Does anyone have the same problem?
thxHi.
that would be too easy. I already spent about 3 hours solving that problem, got in touch with apple support twice, but no solution yet.
It seems like I can only handle 4 accounts with the same server. I don't know.

How do I restore an Apple Mail account to a previous date?
I have three accounts in Apple Mail: my Exchange server account, and two IMAP accounts. I need to restore ONLY the Exchange server mailbox to where it was on April 1st and can't do so the normal way of having the Exchange mail stores restored.
Is there anything in Time Machine back on April 1st that will either let me restore this account to that date, or at least act as an archive of the folders and their content that was in this account on that date?
I see the folders names I need (corresponding to my Mail tree structure) under home/library/mail/exchange/ but when I open any of the folders they each have one .plist file in them...that's it...no messages.
Thanks in advance for any help.
LarryMcJyou still should be able to do it just like I said. When mail is active, start TM and go back to the time point where all those folders were still present. Highlight them and click restore.
That's how TM is intended to work in Mail. really!
If you don't believe me and are determined to do it in Finder you can do that too.
Quit Mail and go to the folder homedirectory/Library/Mail
select the folder for the mail account that used to contain all those folders.
Start TM and go back to the time when those folders were there. restore them.
Finally, move the file Envelope Index from homedirectory/Library/Mail to desktop and start Mail. Mail will say that it needs to import your data. say yes. It will reindex everything and you'll be back to where you want to be.

How do I fix an Apple mail account that is "confused"
Last week I moved a mail account from one host provider to godaddy.
I updated the incoming and outgoing mail servers in Apple Mail and did a "Get Mail".
Two new messages came in so it appeared everything was fine, however I realized Mail
was not retrieving any other new messages. Mail does not report any errors, just does
not retrieve messages.
When I "Get Info" on the account I can see 75 unread messages under "All messages on POP server".
For some reason Mail will not retrieve them.
I can log into the account via webmail and confirmed that the password is correct, and that the account
is working properly.
I have deleted the account in Apple Mail several times and recreated as POP and IMAP with the same
result.
Apple Mail seems to have "memorized" the account even after I delete it, it acts as if some preference
has incorrect information about which messages have been downloaded?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
KeithThank you for the suggestions BDAqua!
The new Smart Mailbox was unable to retrieve any new messages.
Something strange about Connection Doctor, at the top of the window it reports "Internet Connection Status: "Mail was unable to connect to the internet, click the "Assist me..." button for help diagnosing the problem." (this report is false because the other two accounts work). When I click Assist me as instructed Network Diagnostics reports "This computer's Internet connection appears to be operating normally. Are you sure you want to use Diagnostics?"
All other status lights are Green within Connection Doctor, it reports "Connection and login to server succeeded" with all three mail accounts and all three smtp servers.
In safe mode, Disk Utilities repaired some permissions, no disk repair was required.
After moving the Cache files, Envelope Index and rebooting, Mail went through the Message Import process but there was no change.
I remvoved MessageRules.plist and backup, still no change.
I'm not getting a password rejection, no rejection or error at all.
In Keychain access I deleted every entry having to do with mail accounts and servers. I reentered passwords in Mail accounts and still no change.
I'm using no SSL and ports check out.
After all the above I'm still in the same situation, have not found a way to create a new account that is capable of retrieving from my main email box. Very frustrating, I can't seem to figure out a way to bypass the "hidden" library file that's corrupt.
It's curious that the setting in Accounts>Advanced>"Account Directory" there is a "choose" button but you can't click it. I was hoping I could chose a new location to fix the problem.
Thanks for all your suggestions,

Apple Mail accounts defaulting to IMAP instead of POP
My ISP (Cox) tells me they support both IMAP and POP. With my old eMac (PPC 10.5.8), Apple Mail was working fine with POP. However, when I set up my new Mac Mini (10.10.3), the account setup defaults to IMAP and doesn't allow me to change this to POP. I was involved in this discussion :
OS X 10.10.3 Apple Mail: 'Remove copy from server after retrieving a message' is no longer an option?
However, unlike the OP, in my case after pressing the "Create" button, no second display came up, i.e. Yosemite automatically configured the account as IMAP and that was that.
Anyone have any ideas how I can either edit the new accounts or add a new account so that it uses POP instead of IMAP in Apple Mail? You may have to use Add Other Account from the bottom of the email provider list in Internet Accounts.
So, if this doesn't work for the listed providers, try it with Add Other Account.
When you get to the screen where you put in the email address and password, hold down the Option key and the Create button will change to Next. Press that and you can manually configure the account.
