Apple mail and automatically downloads attachments

Ho to all
A friend of mine started to work with Apple Mail but he has found an option he wishes to remove: the "automatic downloads attachments size".
He wants that ALL email's attachment are downloaded without click on it ( if they are big...)
Any suggestion?
best regards
Rob
I want XServe back in production.... :-((

Rob,
Is your friend using a POP mail account?
In Mail>Prefreences>Accounts>Advanced he should uncheck "Prompt me to skip messages..."

  • Default mail client does not automatically download attachments when they are over 130Kb

    Hi @ll,
default mail client on Ipad does not automatically download attachments when they are over 130Kb
Do you know if is possible to change this setting?

We have this problem as well. Unfortunately after years of only supporting IE and finally rewriting our site to be standards compliant we are going to have to force users back to IE because of this issue. It's not feasible for us to walk users through changing the default viewer. The default should stay Adobe (if installed) until a more robust native version is available. I understand you want to promote free and open tools but if they don't work, it's just not good enough.

  • Apple Mail won't download .doc attachments

Lacking a specific "Mail" catagory I've posted this here. Less than Ideal I know but here goes.
    This just started last week.
Many of us in the office and contractors we work with send .doc files by email. In the last four of five days (mid March 2014) Apple Mail no longer downloads them. See the attached image
We can see the document title with a download button above it. Clicking on the button does nothing. Right clicking and using "Save Attachment" yields a 0kb file. Right clicking and using "Open With" results in a blank Word document.
If I use mail clients other than Apple Mail (for example Thunderbird) the documents download correctly.
The problem is not related to spam filtering as we all use different services (and some use none at all).
This is the case across multiple macs using Mail. All the installs worked properly prior to about a week ago.
Is there a fix for this (other than everyone buying new machines and upgrading to newest software)?
    Thanks.

Because Mail is part of OS X you will find a forum in it for the version of OS X you have installed. For example if you have Mavericks 10.9.x then search in the Mavericks forum.

The genius bar technicians can check your MBP for possible hardware problems and specific software issues that you may have.  The diagnosis will be free.  Any extensive repairs will not be free.
If you have minor software problems, you essentially will have to deal with them yourself.  Examine these two comprehensive documents for possible problem definition and solutions.  If you encounter problems that you are unable to cope with, start a new discussion and there will be persons willing to assist you in solving them.

  • I'm running Windows 7 and iTunes and the other Apple programs wouldn't automatically update. Went through all the options and finally had to delete all Apple files and re-download iTunes. Worked fine, until the next update. Is there a glitch in the system

I'm running Windows 7 and iTunes (and the other Apple programs) wouldn't automatically update. Went through all the options and finally had to delete all Apple files and re-download iTunes. Worked fine, until the next update. Is there a glitch in the system? Does someone know of some proprietory block (I think it is related to Quicktime)? Also, once I re-downloaded everything, cleaned everything up, and deleted duplicate files, I closed down my computer. When I re-started it, iTunes was "brand new" -- all of my music, organization, tagging, etc. was gone and had to start over. Idea?

Ok, so after like 4 days of going through all these different issues, I figured out that several programs weren't downloading, and it was an issue with my wireless connectivity messing up the digital signatures, so if you plug in your comp to the modem and delete your temp files, it should start to work!

_*Apple Mail and GoogleMail via IMAP*_
As posts concerning the setup of Apple Mail for GoogleMail IMAP access become more frequent on Apple Discussions, I decided to collect some of the most asked-for info in one place. The following hints are intended to provide enough info for anyone who wants to get started with Google Mail IMAP and Mail.app.
As you might have noticed already, GoogleMail behaves differently from other IMAP accounts in some respects. One of the underlying reasons is its use of labels instead of folders (i.e. instead of moving messages to different folders – like e.g. Private and Work – in order to establish some order, rather there are labels tagged to the messages). Because of this a particular setup of Apple’s Mail client is required.
    *Activating IMAP for Google Mail*
If you haven’t activated access via IMAP for Google Mail already, follow the instructions given by Google [here|http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77695&topic=13294]. It boils down to this:
    1) Sign in to Gmail.
    2) Click "Settings" at the top of any Gmail page,
    3) click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP",
    4) select "Enable IMAP".
    5) Click "Save Changes".
*Creating a new account in Apple Mail*
To add a Google Mail IMAP account in Mail.app, go to File > Add Account. A wizard will open which prompts you to insert your Name, the eMail-address of the new account and the password. Don’t use the option for automatic configuration if it’s available. Info on what to type into the different fields can be obtained from Google [here|http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78799&topic=12814]. The most important are:
    1) Incoming Server: imap.gmail.com, port 993 (using SSL)
    2) Outgoing Server: smtp.gmail.com, port 465 or 587 (using SSL)
    3) Your account name is your full email address including "@gmail.com" (without the quotation marks)
*Configuring the Google Mail account in Apple Mail*
After you have added your Google Mail IMAP account to Mail.app, you’ll find a section for Google Mail in Mail.app’s sidebar with subfolders like "All Mail" (which has in turn several subfolders) and folders for each label you created with GoogleMail. Now you have to configure the account properly. Despite what [Google recommends|http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892&topic=1281 4], I found the following settings to work best for me.
In the sidebar, navigate to the subfolders Trash/Sent/Drafts/Junk of "Google Mail" (the one with the white folder icon instead of a blue one) in turn and go to "Mailbox" menu > "Use this mailbox for..." > Trash/Sent/Drafts/Junk respectively. Afterwards these folders show up as subfolders to the main Trash/Sent/Drafts/Junk folders in the sidebar (and at the same time disappear from the GMail section). Among others this step is necessary because of Google Mail’s implementation of labels. E.g., as Google states [here|http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892&topic=12814]:
Messages that are deleted from an IMAP folder (...) only have that label removed and still exist in All Mail
So if you want to delete a message you have to set the option to "Use this mailbox for… Trash" as described above. Same applies to sent messages etc.
Furthermore, make sure every checkbox in Mail's Preferences > Accounts > GoogleMail > Behavior is checked . (Some will already and automatically be checked when you apply the option "Use this mailbox for..." as described above).
    *Some basic troubleshooting tips*
    1) If your counter for unread messages in Mail.app doesn’t refresh properly, go to "Mailbox" menu > "Sync all accounts".
    2) If you have set up a Smart Mailbox in Mail e.g. for unread messages and every unread message of Google Mail shows up twice, then add the criterion "Message is not in mailbox" > "All Mail", and set the requirement for messages to comply with ALL conditions (instead of ANY). This is necessary because of every message there is a copy stored in All Mail.
I hope these info will be regarded as helpful by anyone who tries to get started with Google Mail and experiences some problems on the way.
The links given were accessible as of September, 3rd, 2008. The setup was tested on a MacBook with OS X 10.5.4 Leopard and Mail 3.4 (928/928.1).
    Good computing.

  • Apple Mail does not download pop3 after 9 March

From 9 March my Apple Mail refuses to download email from a POP3 connection. I use a MacBook air running 10.10.2. Without any success I have tried the following:
restored from TM backup prior to 9 March - get mail seems to perform correctly but no more emails appear
erase disk and perform full factory install of Yosemite - then setup mail account - all emails up to 9 March reload from server but nothing after
worked with ISP L2 tech for many hours - they are stumped
setup new user on my wife's iMac - this has not had the 9 March security updates applied yet - set up new email accounts - same result with email not being downloaded from 9 March
set up Mulberry and Thunderbird email clients - same result with email not being downloaded from 9 March
tried accessing from work network (MBA is recognised under BYOD settings) that worked perfectly prior to 9/3 but now has same problem - this to prove that ISP connection at home not problem
However emails since 9 March are visible using webmail. Equally emails sent today to this account appear in webmail but not in the Apple client.
I have two pop3 accounts to the same ISP linked to the same account - using the other email address to the same ISP - no problems at all!!
In looking at logs created by Connection Doctor nothing comes up in the All Messages view. But looking at the SocketStremEvents.log the following error messages are shown:
    Mar 15 11:46:22 Warwicks-iMac.local Mail[3677] <Debug>: ERROR: Writing failed to socket: 0x6180000b0aa0, error: Error Domain=MCMailErrorDomain Code=1029 "The operation couldn’t be completed. (MCMailErrorDomain error 1029.)"
    Mar 15 11:46:22 Warwicks-iMac.local Mail[3677] <Debug>: NSStreamEventHasBytesAvailable -- socket: 0x6080002b3e00 -- thread: 0x61000066abc0

In looking at Accounts.plist (in ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData) I note that there are two different settings for the key "UserAllowsInsecureAuthentication" across the two accounts. One is set to false and one to true. my ISP does not use encryption only authentication on POP3 and no authentication on smtp. I have tried setting this to true in both cases but this makes no difference.
Extract 1: this for account exhibiting the inability to receive emails after 9 March:
    <string>[email protected]</string>
      </array>
      <key>FullUserName</key>
      <string>Warwick at Sandcastle Consulting</string>
      <key>Hostname</key>
      <string>pop3.paradise.net.nz</string>
      <key>IsFirstTimeSync</key>
      <string>YES</string>
      <key>JunkMailboxName</key>
      <string>Junk</string>
      <key>NotesMailboxName</key>
      <string>Notes</string>
      <key>PortNumber</key>
      <integer>110</integer>
      <key>SMTPIdentifier</key>
      <string>smtp.paradise.net.nz</string>
      <key>SentMessagesMailboxName</key>
      <string>Sent Messages</string>
      <key>ToDosMailboxName</key>
      <string>Apple Mail To Do</string>
      <key>TrashMailboxName</key>
      <string>Deleted Messages</string>
      <key>UserAllowsInsecureAuthentication</key>
      <true/>
Extract 2: this for account that works perfectly:
    <string>[email protected]</string>
      <key>ConfigureDynamically</key>
      <true/>
      <key>Hostname</key>
      <string>smtp.paradise.net.nz</string>
      <key>MaxMessageBytes</key>
      <integer>31457280</integer>
      <key>PortNumber</key>
      <integer>25</integer>
      <key>UserAllowsInsecureAuthentication</key>
      <false/>
Needless to say I am stumped. I cannot understand why one email address with a different username but to the same ISP exhibits the problem but not the other.

I have found a fix - delete all the emails using the webmail account. Obviously there was something in one of the emails that was generating an error somewhere - whether on the client or server I am no closer to knowing.
But once all emails were deleted, then test messages started flowing.
Now why didn't I try that a week ago. Ho hum!

  • How do I restore just Apple Mail (and all its folders & settings) with TM?

    Hi folks,
I was trying to set up an e-mail client on a PC, clicked and unclicked my gmail pop & imap on and off, and when I got home to my Apple MacBook, I had inadvertently reloaded (twice!) every e-mail that I've ever gotten in g-mail to Apple Mail which I use happily at home! No matter what I do, Apple Mail just won't delete the 29,000+ emails. And Mail is hanging, I suspect it just can't handle the massive numbers of e-mails and all the attachments, images, etc.
So I figure I must start from where I was at last Time Machine backup. I want to restore everything about Apple Mail as of my last backup -- all the same folders, saved mail, preferences, etc. How do I restore just Apple Mail but nothing else? Thanks!
    -- Josh

I've never done that, and don't think I've seen any similar posts here. You might want to look in the Mail and Address Book forum at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1223
Take a look on your system at +<your home folder>/Library/Mail.+ (List view is probably best for this).
You'll see a number of folders for accounts and mailboxes. There are separate folders for each account, and within them for various mailboxes, plus folders for "on my Mac" mailboxes.
With Mail off, of course, I think you should be able to restore either the entire Mail folder, or selected sub-folders within it, via Finder > Time Machine.
After you do that, you may need to use the +Mail > Mailboxes > Rebuild+ option in Mail.
(Do not use the specialized Mail > Time Machine +Recover your <named> Mailbox+ option there, as it will leave the current contents alone, and restore the messages to a new "restored" mailbox.)
Let us know if this helps or hurts.

  • Set up gmail account in Apple mail and it only defaults to Pop.  How can I get it to allow me IMAP?

I have multiple gmail accounts.  Just set up a new one and configured it exactly as I have the others in gmail (enabling IMAP).  But when I set it up in Apple Mail, it automatically sets it up as a Pop account.  I cannot find a way to set it up manually...there is no check box that I can find to do this in the set up window.  I have repeated the steps several times and it always defaults to Pop.  So...how can I set it up as an IMAP account?

Got it...have to hold 'Option' button down after putting in name and password and it changes to 'Continue'.

  • I don't want Mac Mail to automatically download mail when I open that application

I don't want Mac Mail to automatically download mail when I open that application. Is there a way to stop that? I can't find it in preferences. I have Check for new messages: Manually.
Also, don't want Mail to automatically download on my iPhone 4S and iPad 3.
    Thanks

    Hi ctconnor;
Since there are no virus for OS X, I seriously doubt that is what is causing your problem here.
My suggestion open System Preferences then Accounts followed by Login Items. Once there deselect Microsnot Word.

  • Apple mail and Entourage duplicate email receipt

I noticed a new problem running Apple mail and Entourage mail on the same imac. Every incoming email to apple mail now also appears in the entourage inbox even though they are separate accounts with different services. The apple mail is a .me account using imap. The entourage mail is a pop account. I have used this setup flawlessly for the past 2 years, and have no idea why unexpected duplicate emails now occur in both inboxes. It only occurs with email sent to the apple mail account, and not vice versa. I don't know if this is related to a recent mac os x update on iMac to the latest version 10.6.4. I have made no preference changes to the email accounts. Anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it?

Are you using POP email? If you are look into Mail's Preferences, Accounts tab, highlight the account, Advanced tab and make sure you don't Save message of the server after download for days.

    Hi all,
I am collecting my mail via IMAP on my iPhone, when I turn my computer on, the emails come through as read or deleted, as you would expect, however, they are not placed within their usual folders, they usually are with the rules i have set up. Should this be happening, if so, any way round it?
    Thanks

Your post above, implies more that you have some rules setup in Apple Mail to automatically move messages from your inbox to specific folders.
If my interpretation is correct, then the reason messages on the iPhone are not ending up in those folders is simple, it is because those rules only get run by Apple Mail on your computer and do not get run on the iPhone.
What you could consider as a future solution is that some mail servers have the ability to let you define similar rules to be run on the mail server itself. MS Exchange I believe can do this, and Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Server will also be able to do this. Such server based rules will only be able to move messages to IMAP folder (i.e. ones stored on the mail server) not to local Apple Mail folders.

You people sure like to make things difficult.

    trevbeats,
I had the same problem. It turned out the issue for me was that I had Automatic downloads turned off on my devices!
see below how to turn it on.
Tap Settings > iTunes & App Stores on your device.
Tap Sign In if you're not already signed in to the iTunes Store.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Tap On/Off switch to enable or disable Automatic Downloads for each content type.

We have a new MacBook Pro with Mavericks. The mail is automatically downloading from our Earthlink POP account even though the account is set to "manual."
Is there another way to stop Mail from automatically downloading? Is there another setting in Notifications or some other place I'm missing?
(We'd rather check for spam and delete online where we can just check off boxes and hit delete than download and then have to look at each message to delete.)
    Many thanks!

You can put an account into Offline mode by clicking on the account and selecting " Take "EarthLink" Offline"

Changed email from pop to imap in entourage 2008 and apple mail and have lost a lot of messages. I am a rookie and don't know what to do to correct the situation

I found this great set of mail AppleScripts:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
It includes one script to delete duplicate messages. So if we can't find a way to do this right, then I'll just download all the duplicates then delete them. Of course I don't want to actually do that, lets call this the nuclear option.
So can anyone think of a way to make an IMAP account for my gmail without it downloading all the messages again that I have already downloaded?
