Apple Mail Archiving with Gmail

Hello... I use Gmail and I'm having an issue with the new Archive feature. When I click it, it creates a new [IMAP]Archive label. I'd rather it remove the label Inbox and move it to the All Mail folder like the Gmail interface. If I click the Trash icon, it, of course, moves the email to Trash, which will be deleted after 30 days.
On the iPhone/iPad, if you click the Archive button, the email moves to All Mail correctly and labels All Mail as Archive. This only does not work on Apple Mail.
Also, if I click on All Mail and choose "Use This Mailbox For" option, it doesn't have Archive as an option.
Any workarounds or fixes for this problem?

I think one way of doing it is going into settings, Accounts, then Mailbox Behaviors, then unchecking "move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox". When you click the Trash button, you will then be moved to the All Mail folder. Clicking on the Archive folder will create that new Label.

You can't merge accounts, if you start using the gmail account for iCloud by logging out of the me ID in system preferences and back in using the gmail ID, you'll need to copy all your data in calendars etc to the gmail account. you also won't be able to use the me address for mail unless you add the me account as a secondary account at system preferences > mail, contacts and calendars.

  • Apple Mail vs. Gmail IMAP disagreeing counts

A friend has two iMacs (10.6.5), iPad & iPhone (iOS 4.2) recently switched to gmail for his primary email service.
The problem is that not all the devices “see” the same Sent, Drafts and Trash mailbox.
Working with other IMAP services, I never see issues like this, so I know this is a gmail specific issue - there’s a disconnect between the way Gmail organizes it’s IMAP mailboxes vs. the way the Apple Mail does.
For instance, when you configure Apple Mail for a gmail IMAP account, it assumes your Sent mailbox will be called “Sent Messages”. And on the gmail web side, a Label always gets created called “Sent Messages”. My experience is that without any intervention, when you send email, it shows up in Apple Mail in the proper “Sent” mailbox, but in gmail it shows up in “Sent Messages”, NOT gmail’s Sent mailbox.
For some reason, with a gmail account, the old trick of Mailboxes > Use this Mailbox for doesn’t work because the options are grayed out.
So, how I’ve improved this situation is to open up PropertyListEditor and edit com.apple.mail.plist. There is a key called ‘MailAccounts’ under which is an “item” representing the Gmail account. Underneath, there’s an entry for ‘SentMessagesMailboxName’. I’ve tried changing this to both “Sent Mail” or “[Gmail]/Sent Mail” and both work in the sense that any email sent from Apple Mail ends up in gmail’s Sent mailbox, and NOT in “Sent Messages”
    Here’s where the mystery deepens.
In my friend’s situation, when I do this, when path is set to [Gmail]/Sent Mail, I see two Sent mailboxes
in Apple Mail, I see 886 messages in the Sent under ‘Mailboxes’, and 823 in ‘Sent Mail’ under GMAIL section
in gmail, the ‘Sent Mail’ mailbox has 651 items and there exists a “[Imap]/Sent Mail” mailbox which has 609 items
When I edit the plist and change the path with PropertyListEditor to just “Sent Mail”, Apple Mail only shows one Sent mailbox with 823 messages items, but is missing the message sent within the past couple days.
Any ideas how to make sense of this?

No real answer to your problem, but I can confirm the problem exists...I've been chasing it forever. Another issue (that is equally as perplexing) is that no matter how you configure deleted message behavior in Apple Mail, when you delete a message it NEVER shows up in the Gmail TRASH folder. If someone would just create a definitive guide for using Gmail and Apple Mail they could probably sell it.

  • Mail.app with gmail setup question

    hello,
i have a large gmail account i have been using with mail.app for a long time and all works normally. however the "gmail style" is getting a bit out of control for me with the duplicates in sent/all mail. my processing is simple, after reading an email i archive it (so my inbox is always clean) so it means i move it to all mail. but since sent messages are also in all mail i'm pretty sure mail.app is storing these messages twice and whenever you search for messages you always have to filter through the duplicates. I think there are some newer ways to sync mail.app with gmail and i just wanted to ask what's the best solution to this common issue?
    thank you,
    rick

thanks for the reply. yes that is what i do sorry if i wasn't clear enough. actually the messages coming in are not duplicated since once i move them to All Mail there is only one copy there in All Mail. it's the sent messages since they are saved once in Sent and once in All Mail. does that make sense and how do other deal with this?
    thanks again,
    rick

  • How to import Apple Mail archive files in Outlook 2013?

I need to import Apple Mail archived files in Outlook 2013 on Windows, but every time I open the import wizard and reach the file selection step, I cannot select the archived file. It doesn't even show in the dialog box.
I don't know what the issue is. Is it the file size issue as the archive file is large (about 7 GB) or there is any other fault?

If both system are using the IMAP mail provider all you have to do is setup the connection to the mail server and all the emails and folders will be copied down to the windows computer. That is what IMAP is for. The mail stays on the server, and can be store
on the local computer also, and when you connect to the server with another device, computer, phone or pad, all the mail with folders gets copied to the other device.
But I think some of your mail was gotten using POP so it is not longer on the server.
Or you have emails in local folder only and they would be on the server. But you can create folder on the server in one mail program, or on the mail web interface and then copy those emails into those folder on the server byt copying them in one of the email
programs. Then when you log on with the other device all of them will be downloaded to the other device.
Other alternative:- You can find various solutions on having a google search
for your problem. Or you can have a look at the following link: Apple mail to Outlook Windows

how can i get apple mail to get gmail and pacbell mail?
it says it doesn't recognixe the certificate, so i restarted which usally works but not always
    please help
    thank you

Google has a support notice that may explain the problem here: http://support.google.com/mail/answer/82350?hl=en
Apple has a built-in method for setting up Gmail accounts that makes sure that they are set up properly.
Go to System Preferences under the Apple menu and select Mail, Contacts & Calendars. In the left-hand sidebar select the Add Account… item. In the main window select Gmail. Enter the information in the drop down sheet.
As for Pacbell I don't know what the proper settings are and could only find these from a third party so proceed with caution. http://www.emailserversettings.com/category/pacbell

How can I use apple mail (linked to gmail) and get it to only do autofill on the contacts that I have in apple address book? Everytime I write an email on the Apple mail app (as well as in Gmail) it recommends a bunch of emails that are not my contacts. I want it to just autofill for the contacts that I have in my address book. Is this possible? Thank you. I have an Imac Intel version and an Iphone 5 phone.

  • Server Data Deleted. Need to Import Apple Mail archive in Outlook 2011

I have accidently deleted all the emails on my Imap account while logging in through Outlook 2011 for mac. Luckily I have an email acrhive file of all the emails which I accessed earlier in Apple Mail. But these files cannot be imported in Outlook for mac for reasons I am not aware of.
Please suggest some alternative mehtods except importing the archive files via ImportExportTools in outlook for mac (as I have tried almost a million times).
    Thank you

It is possible to do this without external tools, but it is a tremendous faff. See

The easiest way, however, is to use Mail Exporter Pro https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mail-exporter-pro/id675131616?mt=12 which will convert the email for you from one format to the other, and comes with an excellent manual.
A third possibility is to connect Apple Mail to an email account via IMAP (this doesn’t have to be your usual account, you can just create a Gmail account for the purpose) . Copy all the messages into it and they will be uploaded. Then connect Outlook 2011 to the same account, via IMAP again, and let the messages download, then copy them to wherever you want to keep them and disconnect from that account. This is slow but preserves the attributes of your email (e.g. read/unead) better than any other method.

  • Apple mail sent with one account but sends with a different account

I have 5 email accounts in Apple mail.  I have what I call my main one and many times when I take care to send FROM that one, it will land in the recipient's mailbox sent by a different account.  I have tested it different ways even going so far as BCC myself, checking to make sure it is sent out with correct one and it still ends up sending it with the secondary/wrong account.  Any ideas?  I cannot delete the secondary account as I sometimes need to use it for work.  thank you in advance.

  • Mail Crashes with Gmail

I'm having trouble with Mail.app crashing when I try to set it up to use my gmail account. It is able to do the little mail wizard dialog, is able to log into gmail fine, and sets up the account. Then mail crashes.
So, I tried setting it up on a different mac - gmail setup fine on my 2nd machine. I then had MobileMe sync the info over to my 1st machine.
Mail crashed on the 1st machine. And, more importantly, mail will start, wait a few seconds, then crash.
So, I deleted gmail from the 2nd machine, synced with mobileme (so I won't sync over the gmail account that is crashing). Next, I removed ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail..plist. I signed out of MobileMe (from System Settings). That should remove MobileMe as a source of problems.
I started up Mail. Mail now has no accounts (as expected), and asks to set up an account. So, I try to set up gmail. Mail crashes after it sets up the account. And it keeps crashing when I try to restart mail. (After a couple of seconds).
Again, I deleted all mail preferences, which lets me at least start mail again.
Next, I tried creating a "new" username (OS X User account). From the new OS X User Account, I started mail.app. I added the gmail account. And everything worked... no crash, nothing.
So, now I'm wondering what is "wrong" with my normal account such that I can't use gmail. When I deleted my ~/Library/Mail folder, any mail "Bundle" applications went with it. Since I'm seeing the same error after removing ~/Library/Mail (with no bundles in it anymore), I'm doubting it's the one mail bundle I've been using.
Is there anything else to check?
ps. I'm not interested in any other email clients. Any suggestions to use something else will be ignored.

    It gets weirder:
If I "trick" Mail's setup by having it use some random server (so I can manually input all of the settings), I am able to access gmail via IMAP & SMTP.
So I can get it to work... BUT, there's a "funny" caveat:
Under Mail's preferences (Accounts tab), there is the 'Description', 'Email Address', etc. information.
Well, if 'Email address' is a bogus address, it works (Still the correct username/pw/server information, though).
If I set it to the actual email address, Mail then asks to save the settings - and if I click "yes" mail immediately crashes.
    O.o

  • IPhone mail configured with Gmail alternate address

I'm really stuck.. I have a Gmail account (through Google Apps for Business) that I have configured with Mail on my iPhone using Exchange to connect the account. Everything has been working flawlessly, until my employer made a change to our email addresses, so that we had to set up a new domain alias through Gmail as our "send from" account.
My problem is that I can't for the life of me figure out how to send from this new address from my iPhone.
Finally, I found a post on the web that seems to explain a way to do this, using the OTHER account setup (IMAP) on the iPhone (instead of either Gmail or Exchange): http://modernerd.com/post/535350679/solved-gmail-ipad-iphone-and-multiple-from  That seemed to do the trick, except then I realized I would no longer have Push email, which I have really come to rely on.
I tried using the native iPhone Gmail app for a few days, as that seemed to be the only solution, but there's just so many things about that app that really make me miss my good 'ol Apple mail.
Any other creative solutions out there? Thanks for any advice!

yeah, it used to work fine because google was supported exchange on mobile devices up until the end of february or so. they let everyone keep their settings the way they were unless they changed them or deleted them, so that's totally expected. The thing with the push is that gmail no longer seems to be supporting that behavior through native apps on mobile devices because it's something they want their exchange customers to pay for

  • Problems exporting historic Apple Mail messages to Gmail

    Hi folks,
I am in the process of leaving Verizon for another provider and wanted to use the opportunity to move to Gmail.  I would like to export roughly 4,000 historic messages that I have on Apple Mail 2.5 to Gmail.  I have set up Gmail on Apple Mail as an IMAP account as I think this is necessary for the export process (though going forward I will generally want to use the Gmail site to access email rather than using my Apple Mail).
While it was simple to import my verizon.net emails to Gmail, I am stuck on how to get the many older messages on Apple Mail exported.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?  (And please be very specific!  For example, though I generally have been informed that I should be able to "drag and drop" the historic messages, it is not at all clear to me what folders I need to access to do so, or how and where to drag them.)
Sorry to be so dim on what seems like not a terribly difficult question!

  • I get an "SSL" error when trying to configure my mail settings with Gmail.

I have been trying to configure Gmail on my IPod and I keep getting a message that it cannot connect with SSL. I did not have this problem on my old IPod, which I replaced recently. I restored the settings on my new IPod from a backup on my computer and everything else has been working fine except the mail. Has anyone else had a a problem with Gmail? Any way I can get around it?

    - First try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next, go to the GMail settings and turn off SSL.  Try and then if necessary, turn it back on.

  • Intermittently can't send from Apple Mail on my Gmail account

Since buying my new MacBook Pro and migrating from Entourage, Apple Mail is proving very temperamental. I can receive mail OK, but sometimes, at random, outgoing emails just sit in the Outbox. On opening the Activity window, all I can see is Sending Message; 'connecting to server 'smtp.gmail.com' just endlessly scrubbing away. And yet sometimes, mail goes out fine. Never had this problem with Entourage. Any ideas how to rectify this problem?

It is more likely to be due to something related to the ISP at your home venue. Do you have an email account set up that they would provide and sending with the SMTP they provide?
Another thing to check is whether you are always connected to your own router, and not that of a neighbor sometimes? Can you connect your MacBook via cable to see if it works reliably in that mode? The randomness of the behavior is important, I think.
