Apple mail attachment encoding problem

I'm having the problem lately that either attachments aren't being decoded properly and the source is displayed in the email or that the entire email is being displayed like this:
--Apple-Mail-7--951337123
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset=ISO-8859-1;
delsp=yes;
format=flowed
FYI
--Apple-Mail-7--951337123
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Type: application/octet-stream;
x-mac-type=584C5338;
x-unix-mode=0744;
x-mac-creator=5843454C;
name="report.xls"
Content-Disposition: attachment;
filename=report.xls
0M8R4KGxGuEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPgADAP7/CQAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABAAAAAQAAAAAAAAAA
EAAAQAAAAAEAAAD+////AAAAAAAAAAD/////////////////////////////////////////////
We have the same problems with UTF-8 encoded mails. If I select the Inbox, then select Mailbox -> Rebuild it fixes it, but I need a better solution to fix this. Several others are having the same problem and it seems to be happenning intermittently.
Anyone have any suggestions?

This clients use presumably Outlook 2007. It's not your or Apple Mail's fault, it's a known bug in Outlook 2007 and there is also a Microsoft Help and Support Article from April 2007 about that issue.
Here -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917120
A workaround is also described there.
A simple ad hoc solution is to ZIP the pictures before attaching to mail

    Is Apple Mail having a problem ?    I can't send or receive Mail on my iMac.

    Apple "Mail" is an App on your computer.  We would not know if your "Mail" app is having a problem.  Your Profile above says you are using OS X 10.4.10 :Is that accurate?  If not, could you please update it so we can help you correctly.  If you are really running 10.8, and are referring to iCloud's mail service, the problem is most likely in your settings in "Mail">Preferences>Accounts.  That has to be correctly configured to send and recieve thru iCloud.

  • Apple Mail cannot encoding issues (Chinese Asian Language)

    I've abandon Mail for almost 2 years, 2 issues I had before is the 'disappearing mail' and the encoding problem.
    Now with my new MBP 17" I decided to use Mail again. I am getting the encoding problem again.
    Things I tried already:
    1. set the default encoding using Terminal to "BIG5"
    2. check under 'Composing' preference for 'Plain Text', uncheck 'use the same message format as the original message'
    3. Tried manually setting the encoding before sending. But in few instance Apple Mail tells me that there is an Error and cannot change the encoding. Even I succeeded in changing the encoding, there is no guarantee that the other side can read it properly.
    This usually happens when I 'reply' or 'forward' a Chinese email to someone. So far it happens to the HTML type email.
    Still I am getting problem sending mail that Outlook can properly decode by itself. To fix this from the Oulook side, they need to open the message by double click, select encoding for the message, and pick either UTF-8 or BIG5 (if the message is BIG5, select UTF-8 and vise versa) then the message will display properly.
    I know this could be an Outlook problem (probably is) but I cannot tell my customer to change encoding each time. I really need a way to do this from the Apple Mail side.
    The following is just one example of HTML email I replied and turns out to be BIG-5 under Outlook, but user need to select UTF-8 to view it.

    Hi xxxx...... (body of the message)
    I need help here, I still like the operation in Apple Mail but this is killing me. Please help.

    Thanks but I tried these already. Didn't seem to work.
    I switched to Thunderbird. Took a while to convert my mailboxes (30+ of them) from emlx to mbox and loaded into Thunderbird.
    Thunderbird is ok, address book really ***** since it doesn't work with the OSX Address book at all. I had to use vcf2ldif to convert address book but the Chinese character in the Address Book all became ??? in Thunderbird. And the time it takes to convert 400+ address is long (I already filtered the address book from my 1000+ contact)
    Font setting in Thunderbird is not good as well. Emails in my folders are in different fonts all the time due to the difference in encoding. I just need to get used to it.
    If Apple Mail can just handle encoding better, I will never switch. Both my customer and my family are having same problem, (because we all read/send Chinese Traditional email) Apple should do something. Already send email regarding this to Apple, and if there are other people with the same problem as me, pleas let Apple know about this.

  • Mail attachment saving problem

    Hi,
    When I tried to save a Mail attachment today I got the following warning:
    Mail was unable to save the attachment “File.numbers” to disk. Please verify your downloads folder exists and is writable.
    The warning must be wrong because other attachments, even of the same kind, can be saved without problems. I observed that only such files are effected which contain subdirectories like numbers, keynote, etc. and my suspicion is, that the saving problems may come from wrong file reading/writing rights within these subdirectories, that the sender of the Mail may have imposed to prevent unwanted changes to his/her file. May this be so? Otherwise, what else?
    (MacOs X 10.5.6, Mail.app 3.5 and, in this particular case, Numbers08)
    Thanks for for help in advace!
    Joe.

    Hi Kappy,
    Nothing at all. No error message but no copying either, and no change in the curser appearance when dragging to the Desktop.
    When I go to Mail --> Message --> Forward as Attachment, the attachment in the composer window can be saved like a normal file and has an appropriate size, eg. the desired original file seems to be contained in there. However, I have no Idea how to extract the original .numbers file from that.
    Strange, isn't it?
    Thanks,
    Joe.

  • Gmail Google Apple Mail Set Up Problem

    I have had my Gmail POP account working successfully for about a year. I recently switched my internet provider and since then I can not get Apple Mail of my Jabber iChat account to work.
    The problem I get with Apple mail is: Connection Failed The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "pop.gmail.com" on port 995 timed out.
    The iChat message is: Could not connect to Jabber. Could not connect to host talk.google.com
    I sent many emails to Google showing them my set up and they could not help. They said I should contact my internet provider.
    Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix this?
    Thanks, Nick

    My new ISP provider which is ERSnet.net could provide now help. I am forced to use them because of my stupid apartment complex. I miss comcast Anyway, ERSnet.net say everything Apple Mail should work but they admitted that no one at the company understands or uses Apple Computers. Their website www.ersnet.net has a section for FAQ which is pretty bad as well.

  • Apple Mail and Gmail problems

    I put all 3 of my gmail accounts into apple mail but now apple mail will not stop retrieving my old messages from gmail one at a time and I keep hearing that weird chime. How do I fix this?

    Is it still downloading the messages? Not quite clear on what the problem is - or why it's a problem.

  • Changing Apple Mail default encoding to unicode

    Is it possible to change the mail default encoding to Unicode (UTF-8)?
    thanks

    BlueBird1958 wrote:

    What does that mean?  Are the recipients unable to read them?  Or are you talking about how they look on your machine, for example in the Sent folder of Mail app?
    Normally Hebrew would always be sent in Unicode.
    But it certainly cannot hurt anything to test adding a unicode dingbat to a test message and see whether it makes a difference for your problem.

  • Apple Mail attachment

    I use gmail as my primary email account. Every time I send an email via Apple Mail using the attachment, the attachment icon that appears in gmail does not appear next to the email. Although the attachment IS in the email, I am not able to see whether that email has an attachment or not by looking at the icon. Is there a way to fix this?

    I guess I will have to use entourage as my primary email app. =(

  • Apple mail copy paste problem

    I sometimes have problems pasting text into an email using Apple Mail. Sometimes it pastes the copy somewhere other than the cursor insertion point. Sometimes, more recently, when I paste copy from Illustrator or Text Edit it places a png picture of the text that I highlighted and copied.
    I'd appreciate any ideas that might fix it.

  • Apple Mail / Font Cache Problem

    Is anyone else experiencing problems with Apple Mail (4.2) and font caches? Recently the copy of Mail on my desktop Mac seems to find it increasingly hard to maintain both incoming and outgoing connections to GMail - it connects intermittently (if at all) although my internet connection is fine. Also my laptop (with pretty much the same configuration and with the same fonts) does not seem to have the same problem. As far as I can recall this only started after updating to 10.6.2.
    There is no problem when I boot in Safe Mode.
    The only work around that I have found so far is to clear the user & system font cache (using Onyx) and restart. This then allows me to send & receive for a short time until the problem occurs again. I have tried to check whether any of the system / library fonts have become corrupted but it appears not (according to FontDoctor). I am not experiencing any other font-related issues.
    Any ideas as to what could be doing the damage or at least how I might try to track down the cause of the problem?

    MacBook Pro, !0.8.2
    Mail > Preferences > Fonts & Colors
    There are options available for messages.
    Click the "Select" button.
    A window will pop up and from that font size can be selected.

  • Apple Mail Cut & Paste Problem...

    I have a problem with Apple Mail when I cut some text and paste it somewhere else within the message it doesn't go in where the cursor is located! Instead it pastes into what appears to be a random place elsewhere in the message usually at the start of the line or paragraph.
    It's really strange and completely unfathomable. The only solution I've found is to put in a couple of returns paste it in to the message then move the cursor up and delete the newly added line breaks.
    I thought it might be a font issue so I changed my default font from Arial to Trebuchet and it's still doing it. This doesn't appear to happen in any other application.
    This is not exclusive to Snow Leopard as it does it on my Mac at home which is running Lion.
    Any advice gratefully received.
    David

    David -
    I have also been experiencing this oddball aim issue when attempting to insert clipboard contents into a specific point in Mail. I am writing to lend credence to the contention that this is an Apple Mail issue that really should be fixed. Apple started the cut & paste revolution and the fact that one of their key software packages cannot paste properly strikes me as a bit ludicrous.
    This started happening on both my iMac and MacBook Pro a few months ago. It could be that it correlates with my use of three different styled signature files for three different e-mail accounts (I hadn't thought of the connection, so thank you, I had been wondering if they had altered something in one of their many security updates).
    I desired that the body text of my e-mail  default to something different from the style of my signature files. Mail is fairly limited in this area, so I include a top line my signature file that has the right style for my body text. Now I start all messages by overwriting that styled text, so my message font is as I want it. Is this the source of the problem?
    The inability to place text correctly isn't restricted to pasting something in via clicking on a particular spot in the e-mail. Odd things also happen if you use the directional arrow keys to move the cursor around with the keyboard and then command-V, or if you drag text to a certain spot, and when you release, it refuses to go there.
    There's some logic to the mistakes. The text is almost always placed a couple of lines above where the insertion point is blinking, and you can fool Mail sometimes by placing text in the middle of a bunch of new returns and then deleting the surrounding lines, but this is cumbersome and annoying.
    I hope Apple reads this, because it got so annoying that I switched to Outlook (Office 11) and it's terrific in some of the areas where Mail falters (work e-mail is Exchange). About the only thing that Mail does better is access my MobileMe folders much more quickly.
    Come on, Apple!

  • Apple Mail internet connection problem

    i  am able to download pages, check on icloud my email, etc. but I am unable to download or send mail via apple mail.
    is there a specific reason for that?
    I am quite often using public libraries and it's mainly there the problem exists - in some it's impossible, in others (after a lot of trying) it is possible.
    Is there any solution?
    Mark

    I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
    Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
    Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
    While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
    After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
    Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
    Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
    Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
    In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Anyone else using Gmail (IMAP) with Apple Mail having this problem?

    I've been noticing the last couple months that whenever a new incoming message arrives from an ongoing thread/conversation in my Apple Mail client, it makes all prior emails in the same thread show up again as "unread", instead of just showing the latest message as unread. This means I tediously have to go and mark all prior messages in the thread as "read" again each time. When I log into gmail where the mail is hosted (as an IMAP account), the thread in question is hi-lighted to indicate a new unread message (including the email count for the number of messages in that thread), yet it seems only the most recent email is shown as unread. Somehow it seems Apple Mail is interpreting this message count in the Gmail thread as all being unread messages again each time.
    Any settings I need to change or is this a bug that Gmail or Apple has?

    racb,
    First check your on-line Gmail to see if the mail is sent / received. -
    Sometimes Gmail will not send to itself or goes into the spam folder.
    It also could be a corrupt preference file.
    First save the mail in your inbox – in a new mailbox on your Mac.
    Close mail.
    Go to Home folder (the house) - Library folder- Preferences folder –
    Look for - com.apple.mail.plist
    Drag it into a new folder on your desktop – just incase you might need it latter.
    You will need to go back into mail and recreate you Preferences/accounts again.

  • File attachment encoding problem

    Guys,
    I spend to much time trying to get trough this.
    I use xsl mapping for preparing to send mail by mail adapter.
    File is encoded ANSI (not UTF-8) when i zip it to import it as archive for using this in maaping.

    When i import it i can view this file when i open imported archive.
    There i can see that this is iso-8859-2 encoded file.
    When i recive mail and when i save the file it's UTF-8 encoded.
    I'm not talking about declaration in XML file etc. There everything is OK.
    Just when i open file lets say in Edit++ and check code page for file it's UTF-8.
    I need iso-8859-2 code page for the file.
    How can i convert it/do this?
    I used TextCodepageConversionBean but this is not working for that scenerio.
    In file adapter you can choose it.
    Thanks for help,
    Olek

    Are you sure, that your xslt is really used?
    In your XSLT I see:
    <Content>
    ----AaZz
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-2
    Content-Disposition: inline
    The same place in the SXMB_MONI there is:
    <Content>
    ----AaZz
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8
    Content-Disposition: inline
    I assume that you changed the XSLT meanwhile, but the changes are not active.

  • Mail attachment path problem

    hi experts
    i am trying to send mails with attachments thru jsp.
    i have this normal jsp file i.e the html form is not set to enctype="multipart/form-data" ok
    now i have some <input type="File" name="attachment1"> in this file
    when i browse and attach the file and submit
    i call my sendmail.jsp.
    here i had done
    String attachment1 = request.getParameter("attachment1");
    the only problem i'm facing is i get only the filename in the attachment1 variable
    instead of full path
    how can i do this.
    Note: when i hard code the path in sendmail it works fine.

    Hello,
    We are implementing digital signature on form 16.
    We configured the ADS for the same.
    In  transaction pc00_40_f16, we provide the path for saving the form and also provide the name of ADS connection. When we  click on the print form button,  the forms are generated with 0 bytes.
    Can you please guide us if have resolved this kind of issue or other settings are required to get the form 16 with digital signature.
    Regards
