Apple Mail causes Westell 6100F modem to "lock up"

Basic info: Mac Mini, Snow Leopard, all updates applied, Verizon DSL, Westell 6100F DSL modem, Linksys WRT300N router.  Connected to rouste by CAT 5 cable.  Using Mail with Gmail.
Recently when I start Mail, the DSL modem's Data light blinks very rapidly and no other app or user can access the Internet.  This includes my wife's laptop and our cell phones.  We're rural and have a Verizon "booster" to have a Cell signal in our valley.
When I quit Mail, peace is restored.
I've not changed Mail settings since I installed Snow Leopard and opened a Gmail acct.
As I write this, I'm beginning to wonder whether the culpret is not Mail but some other program that is sparring with Mail.  I've been focussing all of my efforts on Mail.  Reinstalled it.  Restarted modem, router, Mac in various combinations, no joy.  I can read Gmail with Safari.  Not as nice a Mail, but works for now.

Not sure if the video card is causing the lockups in Second Life on my machine - although the graphics did wonk out horribly (ironic for an online game based on key components of openGL/java/quicktime).
Latest release seems to be pretty stable - but that's relative, could run 6 hours straight one day without a glitch with excess ram allocated, unrestricted draw distance/select, all the things LL said don't do, then next day set it to recommended and it was freeze city...
Can't really get into a blame game cuz I had many friends on Second Life with different configurations.. macbook pros (Nvidia) to iMacs (ATI), from FiOS to DSL to Cable of different service quality (some on airport, some on brand x, some direct network connected (cabled)).. they could hang in there for hours - they might crash from a lost connection - I rarely ever got the chance to crash - would hard freeze the whole iMac, requiring a restart.
It may get ironed out eventually... I may try other configurations as well (switch to cable from DSL), I already know XP works (better) on other boxes - might try dual boot on the iMac... or I might just write it off as a loss and do an "I'm a mac - and I'm a PC" commercial in the path of an oncoming steamroller.
If it's of any "help" I did learn that 2wire DSL gateways are (were?) very problematic with the LL Mac viewer...(with Mac in general).

  • Can't do search in Apple Mail

I have installed the update to fix Mail problems in Mavericks but still cannot do a search in Mail so cannot easily find specific messages.

What finally worked was to not use iCloud at all.
I've had 3 mailboxes, all gmail and none of them worked with the searchfield in Apple Mail, only in Spotlight. All fixes have been tried, envelope index reset, spotlight and all. No luck.
Only a complete zero-erase of the drive and a clean install of Mavericks made the search work and when I activated iCloud only that icloud mailbox was being searched nothing else.
So I did another zero-erase and clean install and setup the 3 google accounts directly. Never did I activate iCloud or made any part of it active. Search kept on working, after all updates, Office 2011 install and updates. Everything works fine, just not with iCloud.
This iCloud account does contain signatures which install themselves when you enable iCloud, so my guess is that those signatures or settings for Apple Mail cause some sort of malfunction and will prohibit Apple Mail from showing any other results than iCloud from that moment on.
Of course iCloud is pretty great, but in this case it does something with Apple Mail and limits searchresults...

  • Apple Mail crashes my iMac.

When I open Apple mail after a while, It will lock my computer up to a constant spinning rainbow. It might take 5 minutes or 4 hours, but eventually it will lock the computer up. I have deleted the cache but still am not getting a solution. Any ideas?

    Hiya,
Have a look at that discussion thread, which also got a few tips for diskwarrior:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=371016
Now, I read in your post further down that you "have run out of space" Now with 127gB free, a 601mB download should be fine, unless either a file (like a time machine backup) would use up all the remaining space or a hidden file is lurking somewhere.
I am going to bed shortly but have a look at the above thread for using diskwarrior and see if any hidden files or TM backup use all your 127gB.
    Be back tomorrow.

  • Apple Mail not refreshing 'read' message statuses (GMAIL IMAP)

I have the following reproducible bug, when using three different IMAP interfaces to my GMail account: Apple Mail, iPhone Mail, GMail Web
    1. Viewing a mail in Apple Mail, causes it to be marked as read in iPhone Mail and GMail Web
    2. Viewing a mail in GMail Web, causes it to be marked as read in iPhone Mail, but NOT Apple Mail
    3. Viewing a mail in iPhone Mail, causes it to be marked as read in GMail Web, but NOT Apple Mail
In summary, viewing GMail IMAP messages outside of Apple Mail, does not change the message status in Apple Mail.
It seems like the 'read' flag is correctly being set by all apps (or rather by the IMAP protocol on GMail's side) as the process is fine between iPhone Mail and GMail web.
I think that Apple Mail is not refreshing the 'read' flags. This is further proved by closing Apple Mail and relaunching, which causes all 'read' flags to be refreshed and show the correct statuses.
    Russell.

  • Mail causes Finder/Dock to hang

Immediately after updating to iTunes 9.0.2 (25) I find that opening Apple Mail causes the Dock to refuse to open, and the computer (MacPro, early 2009, OS 10.6.1) must be rebooted to access any Finder functions.

    Hi Bob:
Did you also run repair disk from your software install DVD? That is not the same thing as permission repair.
If you have done that and it did not help, rebuild the mailbox(s) in the Mail application. Then try trashing a couple of preference files and restarting.
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.dock.plist
I am still puzzled about why the programs/functions you mention seem to be interrelated.

  • Locking images in Apple Mail

Hi, I'm trying to line up four photos horizontally in my emails (apple Mail v. 6.6). But when I send them they appear vertical. Is there anyway I can lock them so that they stay horizontal?  thanks, Mary

  • Apple Mail locks up when composing new messages

After 10.9.2, I am unable to send mail from my Apple Mail App! I can read, but creating a new message invokes the spinning rainbow icon of death (which stays around for hours if you let it -- I've verified this).
Anybody have any ideas on how to fix or what the cause is?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Gmail endlessly requests verification for apple mail and locks account?

My Apple Mail is set to download each of 3 gmail accounts on my mid-2012 Macbook Air. Worked fine for several years. After Yosemite upgrade, Gmail now locks the account with the dialogue box "Gmail requests account verification" -- but of course they were all verified and codes are correct. I disabled two-step security months ago. Yesterday I enabled "less secure settings for certain apps" in Gmail settings. STILL HAPPENING. What else? I have a different problem on my iPhone 5 and iPad -- mail downloads only periodically, the other times I am told "username or password are incorrect" -- which is, of course, not true. So I am regularly locked out of all three sources for my email!

  • Apple Mail locks up since Maverick install

Has anyone else experienced Apple Mail failure since Maverick OS X?   It comes up and is deadly slow... often freezing.  I have had to download Thunderbird as an alternative until this problem is fixed.
If anyone knows a solution or workaround, would be most appreciated.

See if deleting the cache associated with Mail helps ..
Quit the Mail app if it's open.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.mail/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Try Mail.

  • Is it ok to use Westell 6100F in non-bridged mode with Linksys router?

I'm a new Verizon DSL customer.
After several attempts I was only able to connect my Verizon 6100F modem with my Linksys wired router in non-bridged mode.  I just changed the IP address in my router, and then released and renewed.  I did this just yesterday and the connection is fine...so far.
Fyi, I'm using the Linksys for its firewall.  I don't need wireless.
Since I didn't bridge the modem, I assume I'm basically using two routers, the 6100F and the Linksys.  Will this cause me issues in the future?
I need to decide whether to try again to bridge the modem or just leave it alone.
    Thanks.

Here are things that I have ever heard of what can happen (or happens) with Double NAT:
#1 Might not possible to get online, depending on the LAN IP of both routers. But it sounds like you already solved that issue.

Where they talk about Double NAT, VPNs, and visiting secure (SSL) sites.

Another problem with double-NAT is some screen sharing methods may not work. Such as Apple "Back To My Mac".

I just logged on to this forum to see if I can find the necessary steps to turn my Westel 6100F up to "bridge" so I can use my Linksys WRT54G2v1 as the only router on my home network.
PS, I'm subscribing to this thread in case anyone has a link to step by step for setting this up on the Westel 6100F (I can handle the Linksys end of things).

    Title:
Mac Mail att htm issue in outlook
    Question:
I'm using mac original mail software. I did set my HTML style template. The software is best ever.
And works good when I send email to outlook users on PC. However if I attach PDF for example, it does go through and outlook users get it, however when they open message all they see.
    - attached PDF
    - and att00001.htm file which has inside email text
Not everybody gets idea to open it and thy think it is empty email. The same email will be sent to apple user everything looks properly. Why email text is converting into the htm file? It happens only if i attach something to my message, if I don't then email text is not being converted to htm attachment.
I think there are a lot of user that know this issue, did anybody find a solution yet?
    Thank you
    jhyiesla:
I don't think there is anything you can really do about it.
I think that it's how the receivers program is going to interpret it.
For example, I sent an email to my Outlook account from my Mac with just an attachment; no text. I looked at the email in Outlook 2000 and I see the attachment as an item in the body text section of the email. When I look at that same email in Outlook 2003 the attachment shows in the attachment area under the subject line and the body text area is blank.
Then I sent another one with an attachment and some text in the body of the email. In Outlook 2000 I see the text in the text area and the attachment as well as a attxxx file in an area at the bottom of the email. The att file was empty. In Outlook 2003 that same email as the attachment and the empty att file in the attachment area at the top and under the subject line and in the body text area of the email is the text that I typed.
Although Mac Mail uses standard protocols, which is why you can send an email to a Windows PC, it just does some different things. In the WIndows world Outlook and Outlook Express also handle some things differently.
    Goldblum:
    Thank you for your reply
This issue makes mail.app useless, do you have any recommendations?
Other client which are as good as the mail.app or would be nice to know what is forcing to convert body text to attachment? I could reduce beautiness of my email template by taking out header (jpg) or not using rich text. What exactly is forcing outlook to convert body to attxxxxx.htm file?
    jhyiesla:
I truly don't know the answer to that question. Sometimes similar things happen coming the other way. I'll get emails in to my Mac Mail that have jpg files and I'll see the actual pictures in the body of the email.
I happen to also have Office 2008 for the Mac installed and when I sent my self a message and looked at it in Outlook 2000 and XP, the email looked "normal" in all instances. The attachment was marked as an attachment, text was where it should be and no att file.
There are other email clients that would probably work on the Mac like Thunderbird... but I'm guessing that you'd have a similar thing as happens with mac mail. Still it might be worth the download to test it out.
    Goldblum:
I used entourage and same HTML template for email and have no problems. It is just so that entourage is as any other MS product "broken" out of the box but did good job and same message is not being converted to HTML attachment when it goes to outlook on PC. I will continue researching internet because it has to be solved. I can't send a message to client without comment to attached invoice. This is so not professional. I will play more with settings of mail.app to see what else can be done to avoid conversion.
    jhyiesla:
Entourage probably works well with Outlook because they're both MS products and MS is going to have somewhat similar looks to all their Office products... although there is quite a bit of difference between Entourage and Outlook.
Here's a link that may help you on your search:
    http://email.about.com/od/macemailclients/tp/free.htm

As mentioned, Outlook is not email standards compliant. It probably never will be based on Microsoft's history. However, I think there are various issues involved in the problems people have. I often send emails from home to my Outlook account at work. I have never experienced any of the problems that I've seen posted anywhere regarding Mail and Outlook.
My conclusion is that there are issues with certain Exchange Server configurations and/or issues with your own ISP mail server causing the issues.
I do have my system set up to Always send windows friendly attachments (from what I've read, this really is 'send Outlook friendly attachments'), and always put attachments at the end. Prior to the 'always put attachments at the end,' I wasn't having any issues, either. However, I read that that setting helped with other email clients, so I use it.
The obvious question is, "well, how is your exchange server configured." I would love to provide the answer to that question; however, I work for a DoD organization, so actually tracking down the person that knows the answer to that question will take somewhere between five years and never. With my 20+ years experience with the DoD, I'm leaning towards the never end of the spectrum. The other half of the equation is, "I'm using cox as my ISP."
