Apple mail check new messages manually

I've put Mail to check for new messages manually in the preferences, and it still checks automatically. Using Apple Mail 7.3, on OS 10.9.4, with a gmail account.
Thanks for any suggestions on how to fix.

IMAP account? Some have push features. Go to the Gmail web site and see if you can find a way to disable it there.

  • In Apple Mail, my new messages are coming in without the blue dot, as if the messages have already been read.  Why?  Has my computer been compromised?

I did not use my laptop all day.  This evening, when I looked at my new e-mail from earlier today, only about 3 messages still had the blue dot, that shows on unread mail.  I watched new messages come in. One new one came in with the blue (unread) dot, then maybe when the next new message came in, the blue dot disappeared from the first message, but appeared on the new message.  The 2 subsequent e-mails came in without any blue dot.  I had not highlighted or opened any of those 4 new e-mails, or any of the previously delivered e-mails from today.  I cannot find anything in system preferences or in mail preferences that addresses this issue. Anyone know why this is happening?  Has my computer been breached or hacked?

Ok, so even thought no one has answered, it appears that once I move mail to the "On My Mac" mailboxes, they no longer exist on the server (though they can be moved back there if desired).  Which means that I'm fine if I migrate my hosting to a new server, and redownload them, because the mail in "On My Mac" will be untouched.  The only thing I don't know about is the "Sent" mail, but I believe those also exist on the server, and therefore if I migrate them then the link relationships are maintained (no idea about the mail that is "On My Mac" that has links to "Sent" mail in the server, but I guess that isn't so important).
As for keeping a completely syncronizable Mail application - the only way it appears I'd be able to do that is to forgo "On My Mac" entirely, and keep *all* mail on the server.  If I want to move mail into different folders, those folders would have to be Server folders created for that account, and hosted by that hosting company.  This actually doesn't seem like such a bad move, especially as we get further and further away from having only one device that we use to process Mail.
Are there any disadvantages to *not* using the local "On My Mac" folders?  Are there any major advantages to using them?

  • Why does my Apple Mail insert old messages into the body of new emails?

Why does my Apple Mail insert old messages into the body of new emails? The correct sender's name will appear in the "From" column, but an old message from a different sender in the body. This happens randomly. I have an iMac OSX 10.6.8. I recently had the hard drive cleaned, but Apple Mail seemed to be running fine when I set it up again. Could this be a virus? What should I do about it? Thanks for any insights!

Thanks.  While you were replying to my question, I went into notifications and figured

  • Why is Mail showing new messages when nothings there?

I decided to delete the Apple RSS feed from my mail, and suddenly the mail icon on shows 17 new messages (the same amount that were present in the RSS feed when it was deleted) and I don't know how to get it to stop showing it.
This is really ******* me off because I never wanted a RSS feed in the first place, now that I get rid of it, I'm stuck with this huge red "17" on my mail icon.
So can somebody tell me how to get rid of it?

Nevermind. For some reason when I attempted to quit mail, the new messages dissappeared.

Can be temporary with POP perhaps, but should work.  With IMAP, it is required that copies of messages be kept for local searching.

  • Changing Mail.app Check New Messages Frequency to Every 2 mins?

    I'm running Lion 10.7.3 with Mail.app 5.2.
In Mail > Preferences > General
There's a setting to change "Check for New Messages" with a pulldown for every 1 minute, every 5 mins, etc.
Is there a way, possibly via terminal settings, to change this to check for new messages every two minutes?
The reason for this is that I currently have my mail.app set to check email every minute for all my accounts. It mostly works, however, occasionally this is too many requests for my mail server and I get the dreaded pop-up requesting the password for the account. When this happens, all mail checking is stopped until I confirm the password (which is already correct) or cancel the request. It's a pain because I'm not always at my computer to instantly confirm this and then it can go hours without checking mail. Thus, checking mail every two minutes might work perfectly. Every 5 minutes seems a bit too long.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Actually Mike underestimates the annoyance -- Mail quite easily gets itself into a snit where it keeps asking for the password over and over, and the only way to get it out of the loop is to quit Mail and relaunch it.  For those of us with 9 mailboxes, and we've got it set so that mail does not remember passwords, this is annoying!  (Why do I have 9 mailboxes and don't save any passwords?  Because I used to have 10 mailboxes opened, and relied on the saved passwords, and then one time they got wiped out and I realized that I had clean forgotten one of them.  I made the decision to always put passwords in manually so that I will not forget them.  When you get to be old and senile you will use these tricks, too.)
But, anyway, Mike's original problem is that a 1-minute check time breaks mail and he is annoyed by this.  If he goes through all the hoops to hack it to 2 minutes, he might just find himself in exactly the same place and need to set it back to 5 anyway.  Nathan, I'm glad you work somewhere that management is willing to spend cash updating mail servers so that your spam gets instantly delivered, but my management wants to spend money on other things.

  • Mail sending new message notifications for Old Messages

    Hi,
Since upgrading to Mavericks I've been having a ton of problems with the Mail App.
I'm running on a Macbook Pro (13-inch Early 2011 Model) with 4gb of RAM and OS at version 10.9
I have Mail connected to two different accounts 1 Gmail and one Exchange. The recently released "Mail Update" has not fixed these issues.
The primary issue is that every time I have Mail open it constantly pops up notification badges to say that I have new messages. In fact it is sending these notifications for messages that are in most cases months old. Moreover even after confirming these the next day it will repeat this for the same exact messages. I've attempted to rebuild the index by deleting the Envelope files in the Library as suggested in another discussion topic. This didn't correct the problem. The result of this beyond the annoyance of having the notifications constantly popping us is it also seem to make my system grind to a halt - while it is parsing these sometime 100's - of notifications.
I believe related to this (but not clear) is that in many cases delivery of messages to my exchange account is very very delayed. I will receive a message on my iPhone Mail app sometimes hours before it syncs into my Laptops Mail app (even with attempts at Manually checking mail.)
Anyone have any suggestions on how to repair this issue?
    Thanks a ton,
    Mark

    Try this:
Go into Preferences -> General and uncheck the box that says "Play sounds for other mail actions".
I'm not sure if it will work since that's really still "new" mail, but it might be worth trying.

  • Not able to forward/reply mails in Apple Mail but new mail is going out

I am using Apple Mail program for my mails, for last 3-4 days I am not able to forward or reply a mail but i am able to send if i compose a new email

Triple check the Outgoing Mail server info that you entered in your Mail account. If that area says the info is optional enter the outgoing mail server and your password anyway. Also if you have more than one email account check the server that is selected for the GoDaddy account and make sure it's the correct server for the account.

  • Apple Mail Infinite Incoming Messages

I have 9 email accounts setup in Apple Mail. They all worked on various Macs and iOS devices until the recent upgrades to iOS7 and Mavericks. On my Macs, all with Mavericks via a completely clean install, I am having the following issues:
    * Mail using excessive (> 100% CPU on multi core machines) CPU as long as it is open
    * "Mail Activity" shows an ever growning number of "Incoming Messages"
    * Settings are not being remembered.
    I have tried the following:
    * Delete ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    * Delete ~/Library/Mail
    * Remove ALL accounts from Mail and "Internet Accounts"
    * Rebooting
    * Relaunching Mail
    * Disabling accounts
    * Pretty much every combination of the above
Nothing seems to work. The disappearing settings may be the result of trying many different combinations of the above methods and forgetting when I deleted them specifically but I am sure that they have disappeared at least once without that having been the case.

CT - The problem is certainly not the standard behaviour so it is unsurprising that everyone cannot reproduce it. I did a new clean install after an upgrade some time ago and everything magically worked. I tried to list all the possibly relevant criteria in my original post but it is clearly not the whole story as I am no longer experiencing the problem
RedRacer123 - It is not a virus. It is just talk back and forth between your server and client (Mail). Especially with Gmail accounts there are a bunch of messages that are synced and archived behind the scenes which do not get displayed as new and unread (e.g. spam, chats). Regardless the problem I experienced and the problem that Megan62 is experiencing is different than just being unrelated: the count just rises and one can see that Mail is using a bunch of CPU doing something but it doesn't ever seem to finish whatever that is. I get a lot of mail but I do not have 250 MILLION messages when I see a counter go that high it is a bug in some while loop.
Megan62 - Sorry I don't have any advice other than try removing all your accounts email accounts from the computer and adding them back one by one. Hopefully whatever happened to cause the error will not happen again. I also think it might help to move as many emails out of your inbox as possible but I am not certain on that.

  • Apple Mail trouble sending messages

I added my Slippery Rock University account to the apple mail server and all of my messages showed up, but when I try to send an email it says there is something wrong with the server and it will not send. How can I fix this?
All of the information I needed was right here: http://www.sru.edu/academics/iats/SupportServices/RSCHD/Documents/RockMailConfig .pdf
    Did I do something wrong?

    1)  In the Menu bar under Window select Connection Doctor.
Do you see red lights? If yes, most likely you need to enter your passwords.
If you see all green lights your connections are good.
You can also open the Activity window under Window to see the messages as they download.
    2) Create a Smart folder. Under Mailbox in the Menu bar select New Smart Mailbox.
Create a new folder to see messages recevied today (include the trash)
Do you see the messages now? If yes, we need to see where the messages are filed.
What email provider? (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Earthlink, Comcast, ATT, other)

  • Apple Mail not displaying message content

Since the last few days, Apple Mail has suddenly stopped displaying message content in the message body pane. If you want to read an email, you either have to double click it to open it in its own window or else Quit Mail and reopen, which works for a while. This problem has started just 2-3 days ago. Any suggestions?

This is a real problem that I have been experiencing in the browser while checking mail. I will log into iCloud adn when I click on an email, only part of the email will display. On the iPhone, the email displays fine. it's only when I log into iCloud from a desktop broswer that I am experiencing this problem. This is not good and should be fix...please. This has been going on for more than a few days. Is there someone we should alert.
    Thank you,

  • Mail app new messages badge after upgrade to iOS 7

I just upgraded my iPhone 5 to iOS 7 and here's one of the issues that this brought up:
I rely on the Mail app to see if I get any new messages and now my badge shows 3553 new messages When I open the Mail app though it doesn't show any new messages (with their blue dots).
Is there any way to reset the Mail app badge back to 0 or none-shown?

No, but there are other apps that will give you that view of your calendar information. Week Cal is one.

  • Apple Mail: Selecting multiple messages with a common field

    Greetings ...
I'm in the midst of moving from Eudora to Apple Mail (I know, I'm old), and I'm looking through all documentation online and here in Apple Support but can't find if there's a way to do this:
In Eudora, I used to be able to Option-click on an email header's "From:" column in a mailbox, and instantly all mail in that mailbox with the matching "From:" header would be grouped together and highlighted.
This enabled me, for instance, to take action (delete, transfer, etc.) on all email from one particular source at one time with a minimum of clicks.
(This worked for any field, btw -- I could group a thread of emails on the same topic together by option-clicking on the Subject: field.)
I've tried every key combination I can think of to elicit the same response from Apple Mail. Am I missing something?
    Thanks,
    mlb

What happens when you type say the sender, or part of subject line in the search field. This should narrow your view to display only those emails matching the criteria entered in the search.
    From: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2500
    Searching Mail
Need to find a certain email message or a string of them? You can search for specific text in any message in any mailbox using the Search field in Mail, which is powered by Spotlight technology, to find what you need fast.
Type the text that you want to search for, like "Grandma" or "New York itinerary", in the Search field in the upper-right corner of the Mail window.
Mail displays a list of its search results. Click the All Mailboxes button to display results from all mailboxes, or click Inbox to display results from your Inbox only.
Not exactly the same but perhaps close enough?

  • Apple Mail, strange inbox messages deletion

I’m curious if anyone experienced something similar to this… We’re 10 people small business with all Macs. Apps we use are Apple Mail, iCal, MS Office 2008, Adobe Acrobat, and most other famous applications. For our email, we all use Apple Mail with IMAP. We used to use POP but we wanted to see same contents on Apple Mail, iPhone, and webmail, so we switched. One of the employees experienced strange problem yesterday, and I haven’t found exactly what caused that incident. She checked her email before she went to bed around 10pm, and there were about 200 messages in inbox. She did shut down her machine. Then, next morning, she turned on her mac and opened Apple Mail. There were no messages in her inbox. Over 200 messages got deleted or moved somewhere else. She found some in deleted folder, but still not everything. So, as I heard this issue, I checked on her web mail. Yes, I saw a bunch of messages in trash folder. So, I moved them all. I talked to our web host and made sure it wasn’t by them. And I’m the only one besides her who has her password. So, this seemed really strange, and I’m wondering what caused it. I’m curious if there is a software bug in Apple Mail. I do see some machines’ Apple Mail can’t quit, so the user must force quit. Has anyone experienced something similar? Thank you for reading my post. Appreciate your time.

    Hi Ernie,
Thank you for your reply and explination.
1/ Yes, the instructions did help. It was obvious, but I haven't ever used Mac's. They are the best, but switching over it's not the easiest.
2/ Have been thinking about changing to another mail client because of this (Thunderbird). Usually everything with iOS X makes sense, but having the MAILBOXES option and sub-structure (Inbox, Flagged, Drafts, Sent, Junk, Trash) is beyond me at the moment (a lightbulb might go off in the future ...)
3/ Not sure why, but now everything is working fine. Could be becuase of the update to iOS 6.
    Siki
