Apple Mail Freezes

I am having a problem with Apple Mail freezing upn launc. the cursor spins continually and I cannot launc other apps except in "safe" mode" or relaunc in regular mode then I am able to launch other apps. Any answers out there. Thanks

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Apple Mail freezes up repeatedly

Since the recent upgrades to Yosemite in January 2015 (10.10.2) or thereabouts, Apple Mail freezes up all the time. It seems to get worse from day-to-day. Very frustrating. I run it on a new Apple Mac - didn't have many issues before. My wife has other Mail issues on her Macbook Pro.
Hope Apple pays more attention to fixing Apple Mail, which we all use a lot!!!!

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Apple mail freezes constantly under Mavericks

Every since I upgraded to Mavericks last year, Apple Mail constantly freezes. It opens, I generally can get mail, but if I leave it open for a bit, it either stops receiving mail or when I try to send an email it freezes. The only way out is to force quit, and most times the only way to get it to work again is to restart. This does not happen on my wife's account so it appears not to be a system wide problem. I did try a few suggestions posted on here in the past and got some temporary relief, but problem still persists. Have considered trying to migrate my admin account to a new desktop account to see if that helps, but haven't had the time (and could use some good instructions for moving things). Don't want to upgrade to Yosemite as need to use some programs that aren't capatible.
My system is a MacPro, with 8BG RAM, OS 10.9.5. Also, use Suitcase and most of the Adobe Creative Suite quite often. Have noticed that freezing often increases if I leave an Adobe program open while Mail is open. Wondering if a font could be a culprit??
    Any suggestions appreciated

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • IOS 8.1 Apple Mail Freeze

I use apple mail for work and look and get about 75 to 100 emails a day. Several times a day the mail app would just freeze. This started after upgrading to iOS 8.1.  At work we are starting to call them android moments. Having so many of them now that I think I should have bought a Android. The Note 4 is starting to look better and better. iOS 8 has been an epic fail.

Thanks, Glenn. I get as far as the Advanced Settings screen, and there are 3 items for choices:
    • Use SLL - on
    • Move Discarded Messages into:
      Deleted Mailbox - check
      Archive Mailbox - not checked
    • S/MIME
      S/MIME - off
I don't see how I can choose to NOT delete messages. (I'm assuming that the Move Discarded Messages into: Deleted Mailbox is a setting to tell iOS 8 what to do with a message that I choose to delete from my iPhone.)
    Any further guidance?
    thanks,
    Bill

  • Apple Mail freezes the entire system

This just started today after absolutely no problems with my system in the last 20 months of ownership.
This morning I got the spinning beach ball and my computer became completely unresponsive. I could not force quit any apps or switch between them. I thought it was something to do with iTunes because it tends to be less than snappy at start up due to a lot of music and video however, that wasn't the issue. After a few hours of messing about, disconnecting peripherals and turning off time machine it became evident that Apple Mail was causing the trouble.
I'm pretty good at pruning my mail and emptying the trash and I've also used disk tools to repair the disk permissions. I don't save drafts to the server and I don't add invitations to iCal.
I haven't added any new applications and the only recent update was the iTunes update that I installed after the trouble started.
As long as I don't launch Mail, the computer is golden. If I do launch it there is a minimum of 5 minutes of innactivity and at any time it might go awry and cause another 3 - 5 minute period of completely useless innactivity.
Any thoughts? I know Mozilla will take over quite nicely but I don't want to switch mail clients because Apple Mail has been just fine since I started using it with exception to today.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Hi, I haven't actually tried this in 10.6.x, or maybe I have & forgot!
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

  • Apple Mail Freezing

    Hi all,
my Mail app on my work computer (OS X 10.67) has recently been beach ball freezing every time I compose a new message, specifically when I press tab and start typing someone's address in the CC field. Sometimes if I wait long enough it recovers but other times I have to force quit.
This started happening when my company changed domain names/email addresses. I don't know many details to be honest, but when the name change happened my Mail app didn't need adjusting. For example, when I started typing John's name as the recipient in a new message, the autofill would input his new email address - which is great but I suspect this is also the culprit causing the freezing? Could anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks,
    Jordan

Without more details on exactly what changes you're dealing with and what happens, it's hard to suggest any sort of solution. One thing you should probably try first is to install the 10.6.8 Update; that may fix this issue, whatever it might be.

  • Apple Mail 10.5.2 freezes when trying to IMAP sync Apple To Do Items folder

Hi - my Apple Mail freezes when trying to IMAP sync Apple To Do Items folder. This only started after Leopard 10.5.2.
A copy of my console log is shown below. Looks like there is some calendar with a nil UID -- and the program has a bug that it can't handle this.
Does anyone now how I get rid a nil UID (either an empty folder or an item with a null UID) to workaround this bug?

It looks as if you've the problem discussed in this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0 (and other) threads.
Basically the soldering on your GPU is defective and the GPU probably needs to be reballed: if you take it to Apple they will just want to replace the logic board. If you're still under AppleCare, or if they will replace it gratis, that may fix your problem temporarily. A reball may also be temporary, but it's less expensive and there are repair centers that offer up to a one-year warranty: much better than Apple's 90-day warranty.
Have a look at the thread above: no need to read it all - just give it a glance and leave a message there if you wish.

  • Apple Mail: What's the best way to repair existing install?

I have a new G5 Intel iMac 24". Just recently (within the last couple of days) Mail has been freezing and not doing any of the most basic things (reply, etc).
The only thing I've done to the computer is run the latest version of OnyX.
So I'm wondering: can I "repair" the current install of Mail by using Pacifist and re-installing Mail? And if I do that, will I lose all my preferences, accounts, emails, etc.?
Or have I just stuffed things up with OnyX, and should I hit the "go back to default settings" and see if that fixes it?
I'm currently using Entourage for my email and it works flawlessly - I switched to that yesterday and imported all the settings and accounts, etc., from Apple Mail.

    Hi Dexter.
The exact problem is Apple Mail freezes or "hangs" from
    the moment it's launched.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
    1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears.
    2. With no Internet connection.

  • Apple mail won't reinstall

Hope someone can help - I had a problem with apple mail freezing after sending a large jpeg message- nothing was going out and nothing was coming in. I had a similar problem previously which I fixed by deleting and rebuilding the account. I think I may have made a big mistake here as I have deleted the actual mail application this time and it is nowhere to be seen. I thought I could just reinstall the application with the SL applications install dvd but when I go to 'customize' and then 'bundled applications', mail isn't listed as an option. I have tried the general install and no luck - mail simply isn't there. I am now using a free trial of 'Postbox' which is working fine but I will have to pay for that eventually (and perhaps for every upgrade?) I dislike using the online mail service by my provider (sky). Does anyone know how to get the apple mail application back on my machine? Please help!

After a bit of help, I have used Pacifist to extract the mail application from the install DVD and then updated with the Mac OS X 10.6.4 combo - everything is back to normal! Wonderful.

since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

  • Apple Mail/System Freeze

My computer has been locking up in the past few days while using Apple Mail. I am having trouble identifying the exact nature of the problem as it seems a bit random.
The result, though, is clear. The cursor freezes and I am unable to "force quit". I have to power down and reboot.
After some Google searches, I tried repairing my disc permissions as well as deleting my Mail preferences file.
I am wondering if it might have anything to do with the recent security update.
    Thanks, gjcooke

    You're welcome.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. You may also want to temporarily disable any communications/networking configuration enabled, but not in use.
How many accounts do you have and what type (POP, IMAP, .Mac) are they?
Do you have any third-party Mail plugins? Do you have either a /Library/Mail/Bundles or a ~/Library/Mail/Bundles folder in the Finder?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. What do you see there?
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

Tom wants you to run Disk Utility from the install disc and then select your boot volume and then click "Repair Disk" to check and correct any directory problems.  That will not erase any data files on the disc.  If Disk Utility actually makes repairs, do another "Repair Disk" operation, as sometimes one repair will uncover another error.  Stop when it gives the volume a clean bill of health without making any repairs.  Then restart the machine and see how things work.

  • Mail freezes and shows empty mailbox a while after installing ML

    Hi there.
I'm having massive issues with Mail since I upgraded my Macbook Pro from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion (and updated it to 10.8.1).
I've been searching through the support, the web for hours but nothing matches my issues specifically. Sorry if I write a long message but I will be as accurate as possible.
Mail was working fine at first for a week after upgrading to ML, then yesterday, while checking my emails, one of my accounts (Gmail set up as an exchange) couldn't connect, and had the small thunder icon by its side. I checked the password and settings, everything was fine. De-activated the account then reactivated it, still impossible to connect. And when I went again in the Mail preferences... the spinning rainbow came. For a long time.
    I had to force quit.
    Here started the real trouble.
I restarted the laptop, and relaunched Mail. The mailboxes appear on the left and the messages are listed with a preview, but the right panel says "No message selected". Everytime I click on an email it hangs for a while then shows it, but if I click on another mailbox or even choose a subfolder of the same mailbox, the right panel goes back to "No message selected" and stays like this, even if I click on a message.
In other words, I can't browse my mailboxes anymore.
Sometimes it shows the new email download bar in the bottom left hand corner, but the new emails never show up. Every mailbox seems empty.
Opening the preferences brings the spinning rainbow until I lose patience and force quit.
Clicking on the check emails button does not react.
Typing a new email also makes it spin forever.
The "flagged emails" category says there are 12 emails in it but remains empty when I click it.
I tried to be patient, and after a LOOOOONG while (15 minutes), 2 out of 4 mailboxes show the recent emails, but 2 of them (a google exchange and a google IMAP) keep freezing and don't show anything, as well as the flagged emails category.
I've tried various things found over the web (deleting com.apple.mail.plist, deleting Enveloppe Index). Nothing helped.
The weirdest thing is that is worked fine so far after upgrading and it started freezing out of nowhere, not after a software update or even after downloading new emails.
Last precision, ML was a full install on a brand new hard drive, then Migration assistant brought everything from my former, snow leopard internal hard drive.
    Everything was migrated successfully.
How can I fix Mail and... check and write emails again ?
Thanks in advance guys, I'm lost.

...to continue: I've deleted the Mail folder from the Library and the 'com.apple.Mail' folder from the Containers folder in the Libtrary; created a new account from scratch and guess what? Still happens. As soon as I select accounts in the preferences the spinning ball kicks in. Can't find what is corrupted anywhere. As I create a new account (I've tried different email accounts), I've trawled the Mac looking for what's new or updated. Nothing seems relevent. Gah!
Please somone, know something helpful and pass it on.
    Cheers,
    SNaP.
