Apple Mail: How do I add contacts to address book?

In the Apple Mail program, there is an option to add sender to address book. But when I do that, it just adds the sender to my address book, oftentimes without a name associated to the contact. So that contact could easily get lost.
I'd like to be able to add a sender from Apple Mail, then, at a later point, go to the address book and review who I've added, and edit their information.
Is there a way to add the sender to the address book, and have that contact added to a default folder within address book. That way I could later go back and review a bunch of contacts I've added at the same time. Thanks.

Adding an address to Address Book opens Address Book so that you can edit the card before saving it.  Is that not happening for you, or is that happening but you want to ignore it until you're ready to go add other information?
If the latter, you could always create a smart group in Address Book with the criteria "Name" "is not set".  Then just go in now and then and add names to everything in that group.  Of course, the problem with this technique is you may have to go back and find that address in Mail and refresh your memory as to who it belongs to.  It would probably be quicker, overall, to just add the name at the time you're adding the contact.

Check the manual http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf, but it is done via the syncing process with iTunes or iCloud.

    Hi Guys,
I've recently imported my contacts from my hotmail account. Some of these are AIM, Gmail (iChat compatible accounts). Instead of adding one by one can i batch add them from my address book?
    Cheers

    Hi,
    Yes.
Click on names in the Address Book (you can either do this with the Shift or Apple key as Modifiers or create Groups to keep Jabber and AIM buddies separate at this stage.)
Once Highlighted drag them to the relevant iChat Buddy List.

  • How to delete ALL contacts in Address Book 10.6.3.(1091) in Macbook?

I made no effort ever to add the contents of my iPhone to my Macbook. Ever. Right now in my Skype app that I have only Just downloaded have I just found ALL of my iPhone contacts in it's contact list. NOT GOOD. I am looking for a way to remove my iPhone phone book from the Address Book on my Mac and then remove ALL those same contacts from the Skype contact list.
I am now removing my iPhone contacts from Address Book on my Macbook one by one manually. Is there a shorter way of doing this?

    Are you using iCloud?
What is the file format you intend to use to import contacts? If it an Address Book Backup (.abbu) then perhaps you can import it. That would delete your entire Address Book and replace it with the backup.
I might suggest simply moving your entire ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book folder to the Desktop. That seems rather drastic though, and if your contacts are stored in iCloud it might not make a difference.

  • How to hide a contact in Address Book?

May I hide certain contacts in Address Book?

I'm assuming you don't want to hide a contact from yourself ... it sounds like you just need to start using the multiple-user nature of OS X (System Preferences - Accounts). Use one login for yourself, and set up others for anyone else who uses your computer (or one "general" account for everyone else - make sure you set it as Standard and not Admin). They will have their own address book, and yours will remain private.

  • Unable to add contacts to address book from Mail

When I mouse over a phone number (or address) in an email message in Mail, an arrow appears that lets me add a new contact with that phone number directly to address book from mail. Unfortunately, when I fill in the information and click "add to address book," the little window disappears but the contact does not appear in my address book.
Any suggestions for fixing this? Thanks!

Thank you so much V.K. Your solution worked for me too.
BTW, I actually had two similar files in the app support:
    AddressBook-v22.abcddb AND AddressBook-v22~.abcddb
I deleted both, but only the first one gave me the cannot empty trash message.

  • Why won't mail add contact to address book?

When I click on the email address in the "From" field of a message in Mail, I get the option to "Add to Address Book." But it doesn't actually add the contact; when I search my address book forby that name, nothing comes up. When I then go back to Mail, I again get the "Add to Address Book" option. I "Add" again, then click "Show Contact Card," and I see something like "740ACE68-521B-4FDC-AA9B-42583457345...:ABPerson." When I click "Open with Address Book," again there's no entry.
Running OS 10.7.5 I've run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, but that hasn't helped. I've looked for any files including "Address Book" in Preferences and Cache, but there aren't any.
    Any ideas??
    Thank you!

Just solved the problem myself after finally finding someone else had the problem. Had to change permissions of Users/[Username]/Library/Application Support/Address Book/AddressBook-v22.abcddb
In case any one else has this problem!

  • I've just re-installed OSX mavericks and attempted to add contacts from address book, how do I do this?

if you need any further details please ask away. I'm going full Noob today.

    Hey, thanks for the reply.
I've actually resolved the question myself (Yay for me) I reinstalled mavericks and tried to restore my data using time machine. For whatever reason address book didn't copy over and neither did my iTunes library, I managed to find the answer to my iTunes query on another forum... Lol can you believe it was just the case of deleting two folders and voila! It worked... after two hours of searching.
Anyways, I found the path for all the address book files. They had little lock icons on them (weird i know) which indicated that they were locked files????? Don't know why... So (I'm done soon I promise) I unlocked all the files and viola! they were accessible by address book/contacts again.
Thanks for getting back to me though, I gave you a "This helped me" and a like just for taking the time to care.
    Cheers,

  • How to add contacts from address book

I updated my GS last night from 3.2.1 to the new 5.  I did not realize that it would delete my contact list!!!  All of my contacts are still in my address book on my computer.  Is there a way to transfer them to my phone?
Also, I tried to restore from backup, but the back up was from so recent, meaning there would be no contacts.

Connect to computer. Open iTunes and check the box that says sync contacts with address book

  • Cannot modify or add contacts to Address Book

I tried updating a contact today by adding a new phone number and everything seemed to be okay until I quit and restarted Address Book. When address book loaded again, the new phone number was gone. I tried this again with several contacts and tried creating a new contact and I can confirm that the address book is not saving changes or saving new contacts after a quit and re launch of Address Book.
I've tried rebooting and repairing permissions, same problem.
Console is giving me the error:
    9/6/09 11:32:44 AM Address Book[212] couldn't write file '/Users/jax/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata/C49788A4-134A-11D9-8A52-000A95CCEC6C:ABPerson.abcd p'
But there is no explanation of why it cannot write the file.
I am running a new clean install of Snow Leopard with minimal installed software and I imported an address book archive that I exported from Leopard 10.5.8.
I tried deleting my entire ~/Application Support/AddressBook folder and re importing the old address book database, and I get the same issue.
If I delete ~/Application Support/AddressBook and then launch address book and attempt to add or modify a contact in my new empty address book, all of the sudden all my old contacts appear even after deleting the ~/Application Support/AddressBook folder. Where are they coming from.
Is it just me or is AddressBook in SnowLeopard incredibly buggy?

I have had zero problems with Mail in Snow Leopard - it's been rock solid and very reliable for me.
I sort of cured the AddressBook problem but I have no idea why it works and I am not happy with my fix. What I did was deleted the contents of ~/Application Support/AddressBook and ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.addressbook.plist. I then rebooted and opened up AddressBook. The database was empty except for Apple and my own card which OSX creates by default. I then attempted to create a new contact and all of my old contacts magically appeared! I then deleted the new test contact and edited the contact I was originally trying to add a phone number to. I then quit address book and re-launched it and the new phone number was still there! I checked console.log and there were no errors reported this time (previously I was getting lots of error messages each time I quit and re-launched AddressBook.
I have no idea where those contacts came from since I cleared out the entire database and the cache, but whatever happened, it seems to work now.
    BUGGY!

I have a bunch of contact information in an excel file I would like to add these contact to my address book.  I have tried to save the excel file as a csv and also a tab delimited file so I could import it, but address book would not read the files (they where grayed out during the import).

Unfortunately, there´s no way to do this in bulk

  • How to mass-edit contacts in Address Book? and how to group them?

    Hi
I have many contacts I imported from Excel in csv or I hurriedly added to my Palm cellular, so as many phone numbers have the area code and others dont't. I would like to edit them, to have the area code in all of them. I could do that easily in excel, but a can't find an export option to do that. Who could suggest me a way?
Another thing is that a used smart groups to group my contacts, but I can't assign a color to each group, nor make Mail recognize contacts in incoming or outgoing emails as pertaining to one of those groups.
    Helps welcome.
    João

There is a shareware application Address Book Exporter which should allow you to export your contacts so that you can edit them in Excel and then re-import them.
No, you can't assign a colour to a group, whether smart or normal. If you would like Mail to colour the messages by group set up a rule for each group in Mail's Preferences/Rules. Each rule would be something like "If sender is a member of group Friends set background colour to green"

  • How to recover lost contacts from address book with isync.

    Hi everyone,
I've just lost all my contacts even in my Nokia N95 when I use iSync. I've deleted my contacts manually in my address book to make a refresh sync with my Nokia. After I conected again and start sync, it deleted all my contacts on my Nokia... I am very dissapointed and angry with Apple.
Can you guys help me bring back my 500 contacts in my address book so I can put back in my Nokia as well?
    Thank you in advance.
    Matt

Not to my knowledge.  As I see it you now are in a position of manually recreating you contact list or as I previously suggested engage a professional in data recovery with no guarantee of 100% or any recovery.
    I wish it were otherwise.
    Ciao.
