Apple Mail ignoring SMTP defaults - won't send out.

For a couple of weeks, my Mail App has been behaving badly on sending out emails. I have several accounts set up, one uses mac.com, it works. But, my business emails use Bellsouth as the outgoing mail server, because I have DSL through them.
In preferences, the business accounts have bellsouth.net as the SMTP, with port 25 and no authentication. When I send email, I get an error message showing ONLY the mac account as an outgoing server, even though bellsouth is the specified SMTP server for that account. I have discarded the outgoing mailbox accounts under home/library/mail/mailboxes many times. I have tried changing the port to 587 as suggested in another thread. I can send mail from the bellsouth web page. Nothing helps.

The following is a drastic step but it may resolve the problem since you have tried everything else I know to try besides targeting the Mail.app preference file.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception to this will be if you have a .Mac account and/or if you provided email account information as part of the computer setup assistant.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.
Test if this resolves the problem.

I have the newest version of the iPad (3rd generation) with wifi. The messaging won't send out but I'm receiving messages from others when I'm using it. They also come through on my iphone at the same time. But I can't send them out on the iPad. I tried someone's suggestion of changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and that did not work to fix it. What is wrong with this thing?  Thank you in advance for your help.

Are you trying to send a message to a cell number or an email address?  iPad does MMS, not SMS, meaning it can't send a message to a number.  It can send a message to an email address........

    Welcome to the Discussions.
Many ISP are blocking the use of any third party SMTP, sometimes even when presented on Port 587 (I presume you are using Port 587?) -- could it be that the ISP connecting the office, has changed policy?

  • Has anyone experienced Apple Mail flattening .PSD file attachment when sending?

One of my students encountered the case when Apple Mail flattens .PSD file when sending an attachment.
Running latest Mac OS X 10.6.2 (10C540) Mail Version 4.2 (1077). Multi layered .PSD file 120K was saved on desktop and than attached to email. None of the Adobe applications were running at that time. After it was sent, the attached file in Send mail folder was flattened and it size dropped to 88K.
The flattened file was sent to destination. Although we could not reproduce this problem on the other computers, it always happens on this particular machine.
When the problem was reported to Apple, the answer from engineers was more disturbing than the problem itself.
They said "... it is OK to flatten the file to reduce the size of attachment when sending. It is expected email behavior". I am very troubled by this attitude from Apple. Flattening the image discards information contained in individual layers. This is actually EDITING the contents of an attachment when sending it.
Has anyone experience this problem? Also, I would appreciate feedback on Apple's position that it is OK to edit attachments when sending them withou asking the user first.

    Marian,
I'm afraid you have missed the point. People send binary files via email all the time: images, video and music clips - in fact any attachment is a binary file. Underlying protocols are implementation details, a mail client may choose any form of encoding/encryption to send an attachment. However, the internet standard requires that an attached file is delivered exactly as it was sent, mail clients/servers are not allowed to take upon themselves to "optimize" attachments without the end user knowledge and permission. It creates a dangerous precedent. In this particular case my photography student had no way of knowing that for whatever reason his particular setup would flatten the image and ruin his homework.
Also, none of the protocols: FTP, SMTP or HTTP is inherently binary or MIME encoded, it depends on the settings and implementation ( Check RFC's)
I am not asking for a work around, which is trivial. I am simply trying find how serious is the problem. This is not a normal behavior, I know for certain only about two cases when it happens. With such a rare occurrence it seem to be a bug rather than a feature. That is why Apple reaction to is so surprising.

  • Apple Mail 7.1 (1827) Slow to Send Mail Messages

Apple Mail 7.1 delays the sending of messages from iCloud or third-party ISP mail accounts by 20 to 30 seconds. While this behavior is not 100% consistent, it is reproducible 70% of the time.
Restarts or quit & relaunch Mail.app has no impact. Apple Mail has had all night to sync my two accounts (1 iCloud account and 1 third-party ISP account)
No error messages are thrown, all mail does send successfully, eventually.
This problem occurs on both my Apple MacBook Pro 2.7 i7 mid– 2012 and 2.6 Mid-2012. One had a fresh copy of Mavericks installed and the other had an update from Mountain Lion.
Synchronization has been performed, as well, the rebuild command has been executed.
The behavior also occured during an attempt to investigate the issue when a Mail account (in this case, a friends iCloud account) was installed into a newly created computer user account (standard or admin)
Clearly, not the most serious problem to have but one that merits discussion and eventual resolution.

I am having the same issue with Mail 7.1 (1827).  I have looked at all of the alternatives, but keep coming back to Mail.  Airmail Beta, however, was outstanding.  Write an email click send and it's gone like a rocket!  If they keep developing, they will give Mail a run for the money.
That said, I like the search abilities in Mail and the smart folders.  I keep coming back.  Plus I like CMD+Shift+D to send.  If I am out at a wifi spot and do an email, I really don't like having to sit there waiting for Mail to decide wether it wants to send or no.  Perhaps I'll look at using alternative smtp ports?  Maybe Mail doesn't like using port 26? Whatever the case, I wish they'd fix it.

  • Apple Mail 7.3 suddenly does not send emails

I've got Apple Mail 7.3 with Mavericks 10.9.5. After restarting my mac, just to refresh it (it was running without interruption for the last 36 hours), mail just will not send any emails to SMTP servers. It says it can't connect. I can still receive emails though. I have not changed any settings.
Any idea what is happening ?
I have confirmed with the provider that all the settings and ports are ok.
I have 2 computers and can't send mails to SMTP from either of them. The other has 10.7.5 with Apple Mail 5.3

  • Apple mail sent with one account but sends with a different account

I have 5 email accounts in Apple mail.  I have what I call my main one and many times when I take care to send FROM that one, it will land in the recipient's mailbox sent by a different account.  I have tested it different ways even going so far as BCC myself, checking to make sure it is sent out with correct one and it still ends up sending it with the secondary/wrong account.  Any ideas?  I cannot delete the secondary account as I sometimes need to use it for work.  thank you in advance.

I have mine set to 993... but I did not set it... all i did was set up gmail, and it worked automaticlly. That might have been the port number in Lion... i dont know.

  • Apple mail ignores password protection

Since upgrading to 10.9 my apple mail and outlook ignore the password protection and just opens the email. I recently installed Outlook and the same thing happens. ***!!!!!!
Also I now see why the upgrade was free. It installs all kinds of stuff I don't even want.

My apple mail has always asked for a password if launching. With 10.9 upgrade it doesn't work anymore. Also trying to get an attachment out of email now is a real pain. I've figured out its not the mail program itself that is screwed up, its Maverick. Hope for a patch soon.

Okay here is where I am at so far and thanks for sticking with me, we may have success eventually! Can you confirm the following:
1--I Go into the iMac Address Book and click on File/Export/Address Book Archive.
2--It then asks me where I want to save Address Book and I indicate Desktop.
3--I then assume I somehow transfer this Desktop file to the iBook--can I just copy the file, email it to the iBook, and paste it into the iBook Desktop?
    Yes
4--If I'm accurate so far, I then do the same with the iBook Archive and save it
    to the iBook Desktop.
    Yes
5--NOW I open the iMac archive that is on the iBook desktop and it will ask me if I want to overwrite the existing iBook address book and I indicate Yes and it will then place the iMac address book on the iBook.
    Yes
6--When and if I want to put the iBook address book back into the iBook I click on the file that is on the iBook Desktop and proceed to put the 'old' iBook address book back in.
    That's it.
If I am correct on this, another question arises--does this method transfer every email address I use as I notice in Address Book under 'All Contacts' there are some that are missing. I may not have manually added each and every address to my Address Book so maybe that is why some are missing and may not show up in this transfer of Archives? Thanks for your patience Barney.
That's what I would assume. Like I said, the Archive is really just a copy of the AddressBook folder which contains everything related to Address Book and Mail's previous recipients.
Now, the Address Book contacts and Mail's previous recipients are different entities--they just share the same storage location. So, if that is what you mean by there are some missing, they should still auto-complete in Mail since the previous recipients also is used for auto-complete.

  • New iPad won't send out emails on VerizonLTE or 3G network, but will do so on wi-fi - help?

Been through the wringer on this one. Verizon or local cable  co. have not helped. New iPad will not send out emails while in LTE or 3g, but will do so in wi-fi. Have checked settings, restarted, reset settings, etc. Any ideas would be appreciated. BTW, I have an iPhone with Verizon and it sends out emails with exactly the same settings as the iPad while on 3g. This has been nuts.

    Hi all:
Just found the answer to this thanks to Chris CA. In outgoing email settings, for some reason, the new iPad must have username and password entered even though it says optional. Once I entered that data, emails sent right out! The Verizon techs or my cable co. techs never suggested doing so after many hours of troubleshooting. This forum always has the real "experts". Thanks again, Chris.

  • Something gets corrupted then email won't send out of Apple mail

I believe something gets corrupted in Mail and then won't allow email to be sent.  I had realized this problem seveal months ago on my Sister in law's Macbook.  I had created a new mail file and noticed I had this problem with sending mail.  So I'd deleted that one and created a new mail file.  Same problem, I started over again.  This time it seemed to work  Well that was until arond April.  She said she was getting the message that mail could not be sent out of mail several months ago.  Checking her Outbox, she has messages that go back to April that never sent.
I don't know what keeps happening to Mail and whhy after months of functioning correctly, it will suddenly just stop working, that is, mail will no longer send.  She has no problems receiving it.  Only sending.  Her ISP is Comcast so I wouldn't think it would be their problem, but I don't know what else it could be.
    Looking for ideas!
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Here's the thing. I have all the correct setting from Comcast and everytime I've setup Mail on her Macbook I've entereted them correctly.  Like i said, it had been working, up until April.  Oh when I say created a new mail file I mean that I created a new Account rather than changed the settings in the existing account.  That will create a whole new mail file.
    The message she gets is:
The server “smtp.comcast.net” cannot be contacted on the default ports.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
I believe that is her smtp server.  I don't have her laptop in front of me, since she lives 300+ miles away.  i don't understand how something that works for months at a time would suddenly just stop working all together.  She had been able to send mail from last Christmas until April.  That's why I assumed something on her  systrem had corrupted.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • Apple Mail - Hotmail server offline - can't send but can receive mail, Apple Mail - Hotmail server offline - can't send but can receive mail

I've had no issues for the past 2 years but suddenly I can't send email from my hotmail accounts via applemail.
I've deleted accounts and readded them.  I've checked all the mail settings are correct.  I've disabled any antivirus software.  I've done this repeatedly, but still get the same issues.
The only thing i have changed in the last week is that I have switched to a fixed IP address as I needed this for my business.
    Can anyone help please?

    Hey,
I found this worked for me, just check your hotmail settings are as follows
You change your POP to IMAP like this
Outlook.com does support IMAP and SMTP.
    Incoming server:
    IMAP: imap-mail.outlook.com
    Port: 993
    Encrypted Connection: SSL
    Outgoing server:
    SMTP: smtp-mail.outlook.com
    Port: 25 or 587
    Encrypted Connection: TLS
    Username: Your Username
    Password: Your Password
This won't work on mac os x mail unless you disable pop in your outlook.com account first. If you have mac os x mail, and you don't disable pop in your outlook.com account first, mail will automatically setup pop and smtp.

  • Apple Mail and SMTP servers

I have several identities set up in one Gmail account that I would like to use with Yosemite Mail. I also have two SMTP servers set up for outgoing mail -- one for Gmail, one for work. Is there any way that I can change the settings so that Yosemite Mail automatically chooses the right SMTP server depending on whether I am using my work identity or my Gmail identity? Thanks!

    Hey Dan,
You can edit and change the outgoing SMTP servers in mail. To do that take a look at the article below to walk you through changing it as well as making it to where you choose what outgoing server that you want to use when sending mail.

  • Apple Mail error 1969-12-31 no sender / no reply

    Dear all,
I would like your help because I have a problem which has been dragging the more than 1 year. He started in iOS 7 and since then he has been disturbing me. I've tried everything and still could not solve. I tried to contact the telephone support from Apple in Brazil, but said they have not even how to open a support ticket internally to check the problem. The attendant who spoke to me on the phone possessed a very limited knowledge of the product in which it lent support.
    What are 2 things:
1 Several times my Google mailbox (Gmail) is appearing as gray (image1) and I can not open it. Other accounts from my iphone I open normally. I can only access the account again if I am in the task manager and make a kill in the mail app. and gotta open it again and hope to gmail account not be gray ... if gray again I have to repeat the same process described above.
2 Often when I open this Gmail account, appears several messages with the date of 31/12/69 with title No sender and no subject.
I can not do anything .. or delete, or open or anything. To solve this problem I have to give a kill in the mail app and try to open again to see if the error to the error ... but rarely for the first time. Sometimes was making this process more than 10 times and often do not get success.
Already tried to do everything. Restore, delete account and create again, upgrade IOS, etc ... I have this problem since the IOS 7 and when he was my old Iphone 5. I am now an iPhone 5s and the problem remains.
Researched by google and saw that this problem is not new. Has reported since 2010, but could not find a solution. As Apple's own staff told me he could not open a call to forward to the responsible department, I decided to write here.
    Portuguese translator:
    Pessoal,
As outras contas do meu iphone eu abro normalmente.

I Have the same problem. And worse, I have 4 e-mail set up on my phone, 3 are gmail, 2 work fine, just one (the one I use for Apple ID and iCloud) isn't working.
