Apple Mail, iMap and marking messages as read

I am using Gmail's iMap server and Apple Mail on Leopard. When I mark a message as read on Apple Mail it gets marked on the server, but the other way round doesn't work i.e. if I mark a message as read on the server (i.e. running Gmail in a browser) it doesn't appear marked as read on my Mac. Is there something wrong here or is this how it is meant to work (it certainly works properly on my iPhone).

There is something wrong there all right. I am having the same problem.
In my home imac, I leave Mail open when I leave for work. During the day I may access gmail via the web interface, read and/or delete some e-mails, that sort of quite normal things. When I come home, Mail in the iMac has not detected any of the changes.
This used to work with Tiger without any problems, Mail simply saw all the changes as one would expect. Definite regression, and it would be nice to have it fixed somehow...

  • Mail will not mark messages as read after being opened

Mail will not mark messages as read after being opened... the blue dot will NOT go away, no matter how many times I open the e-mail.
It's a simple pop account. I AM able to mark messages read with the message menu item (mark as read.) I also have nothing synced with it, no iPhone, no IMAP accounts, no .mac account, nothing.
But this is a real pain to have to do manually, when it used to happen automatically upon clicking the e-mail, it opening in a window to read, and then closing it.
All was working fine up until the 10.5.7 update. I hoped the 10.5.8 update would fix the problem, but no change. Everything else is working perfectly (I do the permissions repair/disk verify procedure before and after each update.)
Can't seem to find anyone else with this problem in here either, through search or just going through hundreds of messages.

    Okay, then lets try this:
    1. Select all your messages in the Inbox; then use the contextual menu or the Message > Mark menu to mark them all as Read.
    2. Quit Mail.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
    4. Restart Mail, wait for the index to rebuild and retrieve any new email you might have, and see if the problem contineus. Hopefully it will not.

  • Lost mail body and marked messages - Maverick Upgrade

I lost some message body (they are listed but have no content) and 15 out of 16 messages marked with a flag where not in the Marked Message Folder. That happened after upgrading to Maverick. I tried to replace only the Mail folder in the libraray with the old one from Time Capsule. Didn't work. Had to reinstall whole system.

i had lost mail body, this is how i fixed it:
hold option, click GO in the top bar (where the apple icon lives), go to library > Mail > V2
now here's where things may differ slightly, i lost the body of mails i had moved to my computer (on my mac), plus i'm using Gmail accounts, that being said, inside the mailboxes folder is where the local folders are and Mail decided to create duplicate folders of some of them so i had
    Clients.mbox (with some emails)
    Clients-2.mbox (with the missing ones)
i then moved the Clients-2.mbox to the desktop, went File > Import (in Mail) then selected Apple mail as the import type, selected the mbox folder on the desktop and imported them into mail at which stage i just moved them back in to the clients folder where they belong.
i still have an issue where the reply arrow (next to email subjects of replied emails) is linking to completely irrelevant emails, that is not good. unless apple fixes it asap i would recommend moving to another email program as the Mail dev team has not only dropped the ball but stabbed it repeatedly with a blunt rusty object.

  • Apple Mail Search and Spotlight do not work for locating email messages after upgrading to Lion 10.8.3.

Apple Mail Search and Spotlight do not work for locating email messages after upgrading to Lion 10.8.3 on my 27" iMac.
When searching in Apple Mail, sometimes a get a few results (with many missing), and sometimes no results at all.
I had absolutely no problems before with Snow Loepard.
I have reindexed mail and my startup drive. I have followed discussions regarding this matter and tried everything - a waste of time.
This is VERY serious for me - I have many thousands of messages that I archive and need to reference for work and clients, and now I cannot find them.

I found out that I needed a $100 mini displayport to dual-link dvi adapter to make my $30" cinema display work with my macbook pro
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter?fnode=51
When I found out that solved the problem, I took it back because that was too expensive for a stupid adapter, and it still didn't work perfectly.

  • How do I change the default from"Mark message as read by date" to "Mark message as read"?

When I migrated from Windows XP to Windows 7 I downloaded & installed a new version of Thunderbird (v4.10.2) and retrieved my Mail files to the new profile. Everything seems to be working properly except that whenever I close an open message I get the "Mark messages as read by date" popup which has the current date but wants me to specify a starting date. This didn't happen in my previous installations (I've used Thunderbird for years). Options / Advanced / Reading & Display has "Automatically mark messages as read" checked and "Immediately on display" set, but I haven't found anything that lets me choose "Mark as read" rather than "Mark as read by date". How do I turn the "by date" off?
    Thanks --

'Mark Message as read by Date'
This can be invoked by right click on email in list and select 'Mark' > 'As read by date' to invoke the 'Mark Message as read by Date' pop up window.
If you are reading an email in either the Message Pane or in a new tab and press the 'C' key, this will open the 'Mark Message as read by Date' pop up window.
So can you tell us exactly how you are ''closing'' a previously unread message.
Do you select an email in the list so that it displays in the Message Pane? Then you do not need to close it because this will auto happen when you select another email in the list.
OR do you double click to open an email in a tab. Then how do you close it? There are some options on how to do this:
    # Do you click on the small 'x' located in the tab?
    # do you use 'Ctrl'+'W' ?
    # Do you right click on tab to show drop down options and then press 'C' key?
I notice that there is a similar action - pressing of 'C' key.
If you do not right click to get drop down, but instead just use 'C' key, you will invoke the 'Mark Message as read by Date' window.
Can you check what it is you are doing

ok sorry everyone but i solved it myself but the solution is so nuts i've posted it here to help others who have the same problem.
to setup a comcast imap account on your iphone:
go to mail, contacts, etc in settings
    under accts, select add account
    select "other"
new screen, choose "add mail account"
now on the new acct screen you must enter your name, email address and password for your GMAIL acct ! (yes i said your gmail acct !, or some other acct with a NON comcast address).
    hit next
    then the acct verifies
when verified a screen will open with all the acct settings for this acct AND @ the top of the screen are the 2 buttons > imap or POP
select imap and THEN CHANGE ALL THE ACCOUNT information to the comcast account !
then hit next and the account will take a couple minutes to verify but it will verify and now you have a comcast imap acct set up on your iphone.  The problem must be that when the iphone sends the initial verify acct info to comcast (if you enter that information first) the comcast server is simply not setup yet to signal the iphone that there is an imap option.

  • Two Apple Mail imap accounts, but can never include 2nd account in REPLY ALL

Hi. I have two Apple Mail imap accounts. One for me and one for my boss. The problem is, if I receive an email in which my boss is cc'd and I then click on REPLY ALL, Mail never includes my boss's email address and I have to manually type it in. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you.

Open Mail>Preferences>Accounts, scan down to the entry 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)', click on the dropdown and select Edit SMTP Server List and verify that each account has the correct SMTP server set.
    Then close it
Once you have verified that the servers are set correctly check the box that says 'Use only this server' for each of the accounts.

  • New iMac 27"  and just plugged in a Apple USB superdrive and get message, "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled."  I am trying to load Office mac2011  what to do?

If you just bought the iMac and the Sjuperdrive take the superdrive back and get a refund. The by any other brand external DVD drive that connects by USB and try that. Most come with a Y USB cable to allow you to connect to 2 USB ports to supply enogh power to the drive IF Needed.
Or take both back and get a refund on both, you have 14 days to return it no questions asked, and buy another iMac and some other brand external DVD drive.

  • Mail Composed, and incoming messages displayed Font too small.

Most emails I receive and my outgoing composed messages use a font size around 12 point. People who receive my emails see a normal size, but while I am composing or reading incoming messages the font displayed is too small and difficult to read.
When I use other applications where I also use or view a 12 point font, and have the viewing magnification set to 100%, the displayed font is just fine. I think this is due to my screen resolution which is set to 1280x800 on my 13" MacBook.
When I change my screen resolution to 1024x768, the mail displayed 12 point font becomes readable, and in other applications the 12 point font at 100% magnification is the same as when I was using the 1280x800 screen resolution.
I have tried entering Command-Plus to magnify the displayed mail message, it actually increases the font size in the message rather than magnifying the message and keeping the font the same.
Is there another way I can magnify just the displayed message without magnifying the whole desktop/screen?
    Thanks in Advance.
    Jeff Cameron

Yes, setting the monitor to the default resolution, it does look fine. But for applications like Word, Pages, Preview and many other when you set the display zoom magnification to 100.00 regardless of the screen resolution the text seems normal, but in Mail, there is no screen zoom magnification, and so the higher the screen resolution, the smaller the text in composed and received messages is.

  • Can u mark messages as "read" in iPhone after reading them in apple mail?

As the title says. I'd like to find a way to have all my emails marked as "read" in my iphone mail after I've read them in my apple mail or vice versa. I belong to an email mailing list that I receive about 30 emails every day on that I'd like to not show up in my iphone but they're sent to my main account that I have linked to my iphone. Aside from just that email blast. I'd like to not have to go in and automatically delete or open then back out of all the emails that I've already read. And I dont want to delete them cause most of them I need.
    Any help?

Got it, I did have to disable POP because my Gmail account in my apple mail was set up as a POP mail. I then had to create a new account with the same email address and it set itself up as an IMAP account. Was super easy. Now I have all sorts of folders for it too even. Only problem is, I cant rename the mailbox for some reason.
Anyone have any bright ideas on that? I want to rename the mailbox in my apple mail. Right now its just called "gmail"

  • Apple Mail, IMAP messages are mangled

I have just connected to my IMAP account with Apple Mail. It appears that there is an encoding problem. (It was using Outlook for Mac before because of work obligations, but I'd really prefer to use Apple Mail.) These messages still look okay in the message view of the IMAP account through Outlook for Mac (2011 v14.2.3), but all the messages seem to mangled as far as Webmail (Roundcube) or Apple Mail (v5.2) are concerned.
I can't find any IMAP setting options in stupid Microsoft Outlook for Mac. Does anyone know if there's one in Apple Mail that might allow me to use these emails? I'm happy to provide more info, it's really bugging me.
All my messages look like this (source below as well):

    <Emails Edited By Host>

  • Apple Mail: IMAP mails automatically read!

I am experiencing a strange problem with Apple Mail. I have several IMAP accounts set up. Since a couple of weeks my incoming emails are automatically set to "read" by the app. Can anyone help? Eric Bartels

Check your Mail rules for "Mark as read" actions, and also check that the messages aren't being read on another client.

  • Apple IMAP flagging unread messages as read

i'm experiencing a very frustrating problem that i can't seem to find an answer to. i'm using IMAP mail on three devices - a 24" imac, i7 15" macbook pro and iphone 3GS. all accounts are set up the same, as best i can tell (the iphone doesn't quite let you go as deep into the advanced settings).
some of my emails come in as "unread" and others (the majority) come in as "read" which is for obvious reasons problematic. i can't seem to find a pattern or reason this would be occurring. sometimes i'll only have one device on, and they still come through as read.
i really don't want to go back to POP mail, but i can't seem to figure this out. any help would be really appreciated.

That is a pretty broad statement, considering with any IMAP account, it is the server that marks a message as Read, albeit upon communication with the device and app that did the reading. The Inbox resides on the server with an IMAP account, and not on any device accessing it. I am not saying it is the fault of the server, but the server must be involved.
I don't use a smart phone to access them, but I have IMAP accounts, hosted for my domain, that are accessed by multiple computers, and which work correctly.
Can you set up additional email accounts with this domain, which are not accessed by the smart phone?
    Ernie
