Apple Mail Inbox Lost

At work we just switched from one email ISP to another due to a DNS blacklist for the old one. When we switched to the new email server and the settings were configured for the new mailbox, my boss lost all of his Apple mail that was on the old server. Is there a way to recover this? I was just checking his settings, and he did not have Mail activated in iCloud. I feel like we had this happen once before, but I'll be darned if I can remember how it was resolved.

You’re welcome.
According to what you said in your first post, this happened as a result of downloading your mail on the iPhone. I have no idea how the iPhone works or what its capabilities are, but are you sure your .Mac account is set up as IMAP there as well and not as POP?
Mail stores most preferences and all the account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (except the passwords, which are stored in the keychain). Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored in ~/Library/Mail/.
Similarly, Address Book (whose data you should back up as well) stores the settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and the data in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/.
These files can be backed up just like any other data files. The affected applications shouldn’t be running while making the backup.
Actually, while you’re at it, you might as well back up your entire home folder...
For IMAP accounts, if Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Keep copies of messages for offline viewing is set to All messages and their attachments, Mail keeps a local copy of those messages on your hard disk that becomes part of any backup that includes the ~/Library/Mail folder.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

    Hi Edwin,
Try force quitting the Mail app:
Option+Command+Esc, then select Mail from the list. See if that helps.

  • Apple Mail Inbox - messages keep disappearing!

I've been searching and trying various tips from other similar discussions. Here's the deal...I switched from Entourage to Apple Mail about a year ago and imported all of my email folders and messages into Mail. Everything was setup via Gmail POP and I switched to IMAP a few months ago. Realizing that with IMAP I could now move all of my folders from "On My Mac" to "MyName" so that my folders and ALL emails would be visible in Gmail and on my iPhone, I made the move last week. Here's where the issues began.
Each time I moved a folder, everything EXCEPT notes in my Inbox would disappear until the folder was finished moving over. I got used to that and figured it was just Mail being lazy/tired/what have you. I finished moving all of my folders and emails around on Thursday and have STILL been having the Inbox issue. I've tried rebuilding my Inbox, but it only ever seems to work if I select all Mailboxes (Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash & Junk) and even then it only works sometimes. I can still see my inbox messages in Gmail and my iPhone, so thankfully they aren't lost.
I have tried repairing permissions, moving library/cache/mail and library/mail/envelope index to my desktop and rebooting. But what do I do after that? I have a feeling it may also be tied to my rules and have deleted both rules plists. Am I supposed to move the folder and files from desktop back to library after rebooting or do I have to reset my entire mail and my 100s of thousands of message??

Have you tried changing the location of the mail server into your iPhone using your Yahoo ! account?

  • Apple Mail inbox message disappear after a week

I have a brand new iMac running 10.8.2.  I am using the Apple Mail program to view emails from an AT&T DSL account.
The emails just disappear after a certian time and I can not find any setting for this in preferences (note this is not deleted e-mail, but rather all email in my inbox)  As of 4/3, the oldest email is dated 3/27 in my inbox.
The emails are on the AT&T server still, and my old iMac is also receiving them and not removing them.
How do I change this please?

    Quit Mail.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. If you get a warning that the file is in use when you try to empty the Trash, log out and log back in.

  • Emails not showing in Apple Mail inbox.

    Hi All,
I can see emails being pulled into my inbox in Apple Mail but the inbox appears to be  empty. The only way I can view them is to create a smart folder.
I've checked the Junk and Trash but they're not there.
Rebuilding the Inbox and deleting the preference file make no difference.
I've also removed and readded the account.
I'm using IMAP in Lion (I also have a Mountain Lion iMac but that's okay).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to my confusing and problematic world. We currently have 20-odd users on the Google Apps domain. 3 of them are using Apple Mail to access their mail. 1 is having problems. The only thing different about this user is that we imported messages in from Outlook using the Google mail importer. This is the only thing I can think. The importer seemed to ignore certain folders, even if we retried, and it created folders as inbox/insurance_ etc. I changed all the folders to INBOX in caps, as that is what Mail preferred, and removed the trailing underscore.
This is the only thing different about this user.
On a web browser looking at Gmail, I have:
    Inbox
    Starred
    Sent Mail
    Drafts
    [Imap]Drafts
    Apple Mail To Do
    Deleted Items
    Deleted Messages
    Follow Up
    INBOX/folder1
    INBOX/folder2
    INBOX/folder2/folder1
    etc...
    INBOX/Folder113
    Junk E-mail
    Misc
    Priority
    Sent Messages
4 More (containing Chats, All Mail, Spam, Bin)
I did another "Account Info" and got this: http://gallery.me.com/rtaxerxes/100023/Screen%20shot%202009-11-04%20at%2010.19.5 9%20PM
You'll notice, now it does have an Inbox. But the folders it says are 0 messages and 0 KB do actually have stuff in them on the web browser.

When checking gmail through apple mail some mail is showing in archive, some in important, some in other folders, but NOT in the actual inbox itself.

Try rebuilding the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • How do I get notes on my iPhone to appear in my Apple Mail inbox?

Before I updated to Mountain Lion, the notes I entered on my iPhone in the Notes app automatically synced with Apple Mail. After updating, the iPhone notes sync with Notes app on my Mac.  I really liked having my notes and email in one place on my mac and I want to go back to that, but I can't figure out how to do that in the preferences or settings.

Notes is now it's own App, so you can't do it that way anymore. You can only sync notes on your Phone with Notes on your Mac using iCloud.

  • Mac Mail inbox lost

I've just installed Mac OSX 10.5.6 on my old IMac G5 (I am surprised that the computer allowed me to do this, but it seems to work) Safari and all other applications are operating as normal but I cannot get the MacMail to open. The Macmail icon appears in the dock but when I click on it there is no inbox and I can't seem to send or receive mail. The ISP settings seem to be OK. Any thoughts?

  • Help restore 30684 messages in Apple Mail inbox

I had opened another thread where in I had e-mail accounts two using IMAP and one using exchange 2010.  For some strange reason around 12/21/11 all of my inboxes disappeared without a trace.  That day mail was being sluggish activiity monitor was busy but I did not realiize realize what it was doing until too late.  None of my messages showed up in the trash or deleted messages folder, they all just went straight into a black hole.   With the two IMAP mailboxes I was able to do a time machine restore of a backup done on 12/20.  These mailboxes only contained a few thousand so it was relatively quick an hour or so each.  After the restore I moved the messages from the local recovered folder to the inbox all is happy.  When I tried doing the exchange inbox with 30684 it would hang on the restore.  I would select the inbox then launch time machine.  I would go to the date 12/20/11, the inbox would start a count of the inbox contents ultimately ending up with 30684 messages.  I would then do a cmd-a and it would select all 30684 messages and in about 2+ hours the daisy wheel is done selecting and a message would pop up on the lower pane and say something like "click on the restore button to recover 30684 messages."  I would then click on the restore button and leave it.  I've left it as long as a week and it was just stuck there and I had to force quit mail.  I tried that process again and would leave it over night the next morning it would still be stuck at that last screen when I clicked recover but the time machine disk has stopped popping the popcorn. It would be totally stock and only thing I could do was force quit mail.  Clicking on cancel or anything else would not respond.

  • Apple mail inbox disappears every time I tab back to it

I have two monitors and I hate the new Mail. Mostly because I can't open a window and drag it to the other screen. But my big problem is that I use command tab to move from app to app and every time I tab back to mail, nothing is visible. I have to go to window: inbox. Then I can see the inbox again. Also, it's the only program that when I am on it, the left hand screen goes black. I took "spaces" off, but there must be some other pref on that I don't know about. OS 10.10.2. Mail 8.2 on Mac Pro.

Does the same thing happen with only one display connected?

  • Gmail not appearing in Apple Mail inbox

    Hello,
Just recently, the volume of emails in my inbox decreased dramatically. Upon closer investigation, I realised that my Gmail messages weren't downloading.
This carried on for a few days and then they started to appear again. Now they have stopped appearing once more. I have no idea how this is happening. To the best of my knowledge, I haven't done or changed anything.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

Me too! Makes me feel better that it's happened to all of us recently, though. For me, the phenomenon coincided with me getting a new MacBook Pro - I set up the POP Gmail account on my Mail, and it didn't download all of my Gmail messages.
I thought it was something I did wrong, but now, since we've all recently had the same problem, I'm guessing it's a Gmail thing.
Perhaps it will correct itself . . . in the meantime, if anybody's out there, HELP!

  • Apple Mail- Mail not going into Inbox

I've been having this issue more and more recently.
Seems when Apple Mail checks for new mail (Mail provider is Google), it does show up in the All Mail folder that Google provides, but the new messages are not showing up in the Apple Mail inbox.
When I check this in the Google mail web client, mail appears as normal.
I'm missing messages, so this is something I'd like to figure out what's going on.
    Thanks for any help.

The problem is Google is delivering the mail correctly, Apple Mail isn't putting it in the Inbox. This is a new problem, which started in the last few days. I haven't made any changes to my email settings so unless Google did something, which is entirely likely, this behavior is not right.
Appreciate the insight, but that previous thread didn't really apply to this problem.
