Apple mail is broken

apple mail is now hanging on my iMac (OSX 10.8.5).  Trouble may have started with power glitch during the restore phase of my mail-server (IMAP).
mail client was installed with my upgrade to 10.8 on May 24, 2013. Get Info shows it as version 6.6
Quit and Rebuild Index does not work.
I have a SuperDuper backup from about a month ago, so I am inclined to delete ALL mail files, simply transfer the library (archive?) of saved mails (a LOT of messages and downloads) and indices from my external backup disk,  download a clean version of mail.app, and let my IMAP server reload all the emails since last month.
Where are all my saved mails and the index?
Anybody know if this will work?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Apple Mail in iOS 8 is broken on my iPad 3

Hi all. I don't know what is happening with my iOS Mail App after upgrading to iOS8. I even did a full restore of my device (iPad3) configuring it as a new iPad and the problem persists.
There is a strong delay in pulling data from the email accounts. Sometimes, it doesn't do it at all, and Mail displays "updated yesterday", etc...
Pulling the messages down to display the spinning wheel also doesn't do anything.
I have also noticed that going to Preferences / Mail, Contacts and Calendar and choose "Fetch New Data" the operation takes about 30 seconds to go to the next screen. I have only one account configured in this iPad.
Right next to my iPhone, still on iOS 7, with 5 email accounts configured, selecting "Fetch New Data" takes me instantly to the next screen and the Mail app, as soon as it is opened, fetches new mail.
I have used several other Mail apps (such as Boxer) to confirm that the problem is exclusive to Apple Mail. In Boxer everything works ok.
Does anyone have the same problem?
    Thanks.

Similar problem here. I use Mail client for several accounts including Gmail for my domain through Google Apps. One of these accounts stopped working two days ago. Just stopped downloading new mail entirely. Research suggested that my iPad was blocked by Gmail, but I am able to use the Gmail app just fine on it, so I suspect something with Mail. I'm on iOS 8.0.2 since it was released a few weeks ago.

  • Mail Message URLs like message: ... not working with Apple Mail any more

Links to certain messages are not working for me any more. For example if I drag a Mail to TextEdit Mac OS X creates a correct Link with the scheme: message:<... etc. Those links should open the linked message in Apple Mail. This seems broken for me.
Is there a way to reenable this functionality, via Terminal or so?
I have to admit that I used Sparrow for a short time. It looks like this stole the message-linking. Now I completely removed Sparrow, but it is still not working again with Apple Mail. Any suggestions?
    Kind regards,
    Markus

nope, same result with the flags, and now my eyes are burning from having used outlook mode instead of classic mode.

    Title:
Mac Mail att htm issue in outlook
    Question:
I'm using mac original mail software. I did set my HTML style template. The software is best ever.
And works good when I send email to outlook users on PC. However if I attach PDF for example, it does go through and outlook users get it, however when they open message all they see.
    - attached PDF
    - and att00001.htm file which has inside email text
Not everybody gets idea to open it and thy think it is empty email. The same email will be sent to apple user everything looks properly. Why email text is converting into the htm file? It happens only if i attach something to my message, if I don't then email text is not being converted to htm attachment.
I think there are a lot of user that know this issue, did anybody find a solution yet?
    Thank you
    jhyiesla:
I don't think there is anything you can really do about it.
I think that it's how the receivers program is going to interpret it.
For example, I sent an email to my Outlook account from my Mac with just an attachment; no text. I looked at the email in Outlook 2000 and I see the attachment as an item in the body text section of the email. When I look at that same email in Outlook 2003 the attachment shows in the attachment area under the subject line and the body text area is blank.
Then I sent another one with an attachment and some text in the body of the email. In Outlook 2000 I see the text in the text area and the attachment as well as a attxxx file in an area at the bottom of the email. The att file was empty. In Outlook 2003 that same email as the attachment and the empty att file in the attachment area at the top and under the subject line and in the body text area of the email is the text that I typed.
Although Mac Mail uses standard protocols, which is why you can send an email to a Windows PC, it just does some different things. In the WIndows world Outlook and Outlook Express also handle some things differently.
    Goldblum:
    Thank you for your reply
This issue makes mail.app useless, do you have any recommendations?
Other client which are as good as the mail.app or would be nice to know what is forcing to convert body text to attachment? I could reduce beautiness of my email template by taking out header (jpg) or not using rich text. What exactly is forcing outlook to convert body to attxxxxx.htm file?
    jhyiesla:
I truly don't know the answer to that question. Sometimes similar things happen coming the other way. I'll get emails in to my Mac Mail that have jpg files and I'll see the actual pictures in the body of the email.
I happen to also have Office 2008 for the Mac installed and when I sent my self a message and looked at it in Outlook 2000 and XP, the email looked "normal" in all instances. The attachment was marked as an attachment, text was where it should be and no att file.
There are other email clients that would probably work on the Mac like Thunderbird... but I'm guessing that you'd have a similar thing as happens with mac mail. Still it might be worth the download to test it out.
    Goldblum:
I used entourage and same HTML template for email and have no problems. It is just so that entourage is as any other MS product "broken" out of the box but did good job and same message is not being converted to HTML attachment when it goes to outlook on PC. I will continue researching internet because it has to be solved. I can't send a message to client without comment to attached invoice. This is so not professional. I will play more with settings of mail.app to see what else can be done to avoid conversion.
    jhyiesla:
Entourage probably works well with Outlook because they're both MS products and MS is going to have somewhat similar looks to all their Office products... although there is quite a bit of difference between Entourage and Outlook.
Here's a link that may help you on your search:
    http://email.about.com/od/macemailclients/tp/free.htm

As mentioned, Outlook is not email standards compliant. It probably never will be based on Microsoft's history. However, I think there are various issues involved in the problems people have. I often send emails from home to my Outlook account at work. I have never experienced any of the problems that I've seen posted anywhere regarding Mail and Outlook.
My conclusion is that there are issues with certain Exchange Server configurations and/or issues with your own ISP mail server causing the issues.
I do have my system set up to Always send windows friendly attachments (from what I've read, this really is 'send Outlook friendly attachments'), and always put attachments at the end. Prior to the 'always put attachments at the end,' I wasn't having any issues, either. However, I read that that setting helped with other email clients, so I use it.
The obvious question is, "well, how is your exchange server configured." I would love to provide the answer to that question; however, I work for a DoD organization, so actually tracking down the person that knows the answer to that question will take somewhere between five years and never. With my 20+ years experience with the DoD, I'm leaning towards the never end of the spectrum. The other half of the equation is, "I'm using cox as my ISP."

  • Apple Mail - Email Send Field Showing Different Data, Unable To Sort Correctly

    Hi All,
I'm having a very annoying issue in Apple Mail, running 10.6. Some of the incoming mail messages are showing the sender's email address in the "From" field, rather than the person's "Name". There are also cases where this is happening, but this time the email address in the From field has angle brackets ( <  and > ) around it. This makes sorting of emails by sender incorrect and broken apart.
So the three different ways it's displaying in the Mail window are:
    From
    Subject
    John Smith
    Lunch Today
    [email protected]
    Lunch Today
    <[email protected]> <[email protected]>
    Lunch Today
    Here's what else I know:
    - The error is NOT limited to a specific person, email address or mail domain. In other words, it has occurred differently with the same sender.
    - The errors seem to occur in periods of time. In other words, it will display "correct" for a period of time (weeks or even months), then display "wrong" for a period of time. So it's not like every other message is different.
We contacted our ISP to see if they knew anything. They scratched their heads like we did, and they think that the issue is coming from the sender, rather than the mail server having a hiccup.
This is VERY frustrating, as I get lots of email in a day's time that can be time-sensitive.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

  • Apple Mail not working with Gmail IMAP

This is a slight re-working of a post of 27 March as I am being driven nuts having to use web mail.
I have used Mail with gMail for years. Last week I was abroad and I could only use the web interface as when I logged in from my MacBook via Mail the message pane was fine (and up to date though it did not open by default as usual) but if I opened any message all I got was 'Loading' followed by the spinning beach ball. I tried this for several days and always got the same result and assumed it was an (atypical) result of being abroad.
When I got home I found I had exactly the same problem on my iMac which was fine before I left home and as with my MB I have to force quit to get out of Mail.
I then when out and after a restart (not the first since the problem) that my MB was OK - but only briefly. My iMac is still stuffed as far as Mail is concerned.
Mail itself does not seem completely broken, for instance I can look at Previous recipients, I can send from Mail and it arrives back (but then I can’t open it). I can drag messages to the Bin, but they don’t seem to stay there. Oddly I have sent a lot of mail from the gMail interface today, but none of them show up in Apple Mail, tho earlier days do.
I do have a lot of messages in sent mail, nearly 6,000, and while I can understand it progressively slowing things down I don’t see that it would cause both machines to fail simultaneously and anyway I don’t want to delete them.
Any ideas? There are no error messages, Connection Doctor shows me as logged in, and I have not found anything via a Google search or in their discussions.
    Cheers, Colin

Opps, the * was an OCR error from the screen dump I did not notice.
plus.net is my ISP, but I don't use them for mail normally but I suspect once-upon-a-time I may have had a problem connecting with gMail's SMTP server, so set that up.
I'm actually running Mail 3 (I think the latest version for Leopard, incidentally gmail help is only up to v 2).
Rather than delete the other servers I have set it to only use smtp.gmail, but it still hangs on opening a message pane. Oddly even tho I get the beech ball I can still open prefs.
I can't help feeling the problem is with Mail itself (tho why on two machines at once is beyond me) as the normal behaviour is always to open with the Message pane, but it opens without a window; almost as soon as I open the Message pane it updates with gmail and deletes any message I have moved on the web side. So, only partly broken, but broken enough to be useless!
    Cheers, Colin

  • Yosemite Apple Mail search not working

Upgraded Mac mini from Mavericks to Yosemite.
Search within Apple mail is not working.
Come to think of it, search everywhere seems to be broken. It's as if Spotlight is not working too well.

FINALLY I found a way to fix this issue, at least for me:
Boot into SAFE mode: OS X Yosemite: Start up in safe mode
    Run Applications -> Disk Utility
Click on your hard drive's volume
Click and run Repair Disk Permissions
    Reboot
    Voila! Fixed at last!
I also found that Alfred was hanging on startup, probably same reason as Alfred uses Spotlight in the background.
    No more issues.
What's weird is that I finally bit the bullet and installed Yosemite on my 13" Retina MacBook Pro and had no spotlight issues whatsoever. Weird.

  • Apple Mail problems

    Here's the situation:
One PBG4 w/broken screen, running an external (duh) Samsung monitor. This is my shop PB, it's currently masquerading as an immobile desktop.
Another PBG4, which I mostly keep at home, but also use on the road.
LaCie 320GB external Firewire drive. backup at shop (used Migration Assistant to copy the shop PB's system (10.4.7), apps, and docs to the FireWire drive)
Two mail accounts both of which dump into Mail 2.1, on both PBs.
    Problem one:
Is there a way -- besides signing up with .Mac -- that I can synchronize the mail on both machines? Failing that, is there a way -- besides doing it message-by-message -- to save the text and attachments from new mail messages?
    Problem two:
As far as I can tell, both PBs are set up exactly the same way and certainly the mail prefs are the same, and both PBs are set up with Firefox as the default browser. when I click on a hypertext link in a message on my PB at home, it opens Firefox to the correct page, just like it ought to do, but if I click on an HTML link in a message on my PB at the shop, the mail window flashes once, but nothing opens. This is especially problematic when the clickable link is one of those "click here" links, rather than the actual URL.
What in the ding-dong am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!
    Bart Brown
    PBG4 Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    PBG4 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Locally stored mailboxes and POP accounts cannot be synchronized. The only way to synchronize mail between users or computers is storing it on the server, i.e. using an IMAP account (it doesn’t have to be a .Mac account, any IMAP account would do).
Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (except the passwords, which are stored in the keychain). Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored within the ~/Library/Mail/ folder.
If both computers are running the same major version of Mac OS X, copying these (the preferences file and the entire Mail folder) from one computer to the other is all you need to do in order to have an exact copy of all your messages, mailboxes and Mail settings on both computers.
Locally stored mailboxes can be copied to the Desktop or anywhere else by just dragging them there from Mail itself (for IMAP server-stored mailboxes, transfer the messages to locally stored “On My Mac” mailboxes in Mail first). These, however, are *.mbox folders (not standard mbox files), where messages are stored in individual *.emlx files that other mail clients don’t know or care about. They can be imported back into Mail doing File > Import Mailboxes and choosing Mail for Mac OS X as the data format.
Selected messages can be exported in standard mbox format doing File > Save As and choosing Raw Message Source from the Format popup menu. Standard mbox files can be imported into most mail clients. In particular, they can be imported back into Mail doing File > Import Mailboxes and choosing Other as the data format. Using this format, however, would cause some status flags to be lost (e.g. whether a message has been replied to).
Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has an Archive Messages script that you may also find useful.
Finally, there are several backup/archiving solutions for Mail available out there:
    http://www.hawkwings.net/plugins.htm#archive
if I click on an HTML link in a message on my PB at the shop,
the mail window flashes once, but nothing opens.
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. Try to reproduce the problem and look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Can't import Entourage mail into Apple Mail

I'm using Apple Mail 2.1, which appears to be the latest version. I'm attempting to import my email from Entourage 11.2.5 (for OS X). Instead of looking for Entourage, however, Mail opens my old System 9 applications folder and asks, "Where is 12?" Pointing to Entourage just gets the message, "Unable to locate Entourage mailboxes to import." Is Mail broken or is my copy of mail broken?

Last I knew, Eudora ran fine under 10.5.8
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Apple Mail as Exchange client - unable to jump to replies

Our office is (trying to) use Apple Mail v4.3 as client toExchange Svr 2010. Amongst a host of other odd behavior (I'm starting to think that Apple should stop touting Exchange interoperability as a feature, because it really ISN'T ready for primetime), we're finding that when a user tries to jump to a reply they've sent by clicking the reply indicator (the swirly arrow), they get an error:
Mail was unable to find your reply to the message "<subject>". You may have deleted the message.
The message is, in fact, in their Sent mailbox; it just seems that the link to it is broken. Can anybody else verify this behavior for me and/or have any suggestions for how to fix it?

This would point to an issue with indexing, and would hopefully be resolved by removing the account and setting it up again, or by forcing reindexing via the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
Note that with IMAP or Exchange accounts, there is the special treatment requiring removal of the account folders. Have you ever removed the Envelope Index without removing the account folders, by any chance?
After you do this, you should again test.

  • Un-installing apple mail add on

    Hi
i have some apple mail add-ons that was disabled after my last update to system so from where i can find and remove them as they don't appear in applications folder ?

Many add-ons (like GPGMail) go in your user account Library/Mail/MailBundles and will land up in your user account Library/Mail/MailBundles (Disabled). At least that's where I think they go, I recently cleaned out a broken-by-10.6.6 GPGMail so the path may not be right but it's got "Bundles" and "Disabled" in its name.
One other thing that I have found that I had to do was trash my Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist which was a hassle because of the customization with the toolbar and accounts that gets blown away. The work-around for that, for in the future, is that before you add any mail add-ons, is to make a copy of your user account Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist before you add your add-on. That way, when an update breaks your add-on, you trash the MailBundles (Disabled) folder and the current com.apple.mail.plist and copy the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to the com.apple.mail.

  • Attachments in Apple Mail + Exchange break the text of the mail

Working with Apple Mail on an Exchange server account, I've recently noted that when I put an attachment in the body of an email, all further text is broken out into a separate email attachment... thereby getting ignored by the recipient.
This has been happening for a couple of weeks now - and is a significant bug from my point of view.
The same behaviour is NOT exhibited using my gmail account.
Any ideas how to fix it?

    Sandlines,
I should have searched more. I found a posting that talks about this same subject with a method to get it to work. All I had to do was make the first word in the email bold and in-line attachments work the way they are supposed to work. This doesn't help incoming files but it does help make your emails readable.
Outlook has a tough time rendering an email correctly. If you want it to have all attachments inline (and the server doesn't strip out or prevent use of HTML messages), you can trick it to work. When you start a new message, change the font to something other than your default font. That will trigger Outlook into rendering it correctly.
Some people create a signature in the Font that they want to compose in, and then start the message in the first line of the signature. That will set the font tag for Outlook to understand.
If you want the recipients to actually be able to use the image attachments you send, make sure you set the message to Plain Text and put the attachments at the end. Otherwise, Outlook renders the images inline and it is nearly impossible to save them separate from the message.

  • As of Friday Night, Apple MAIL (in Tiger) asks for imap password? Why?

As of Friday night, when accessing my email (via AOl's imap server enabled through Tiger's 10.4.8 Mail, I can no longer get my new mail. I changed no settings on the computers (this began occurring on two of my Macs--a 15-inch G4 Titanium PB 867 and a Dual 1 GHZ Quicksilver) within the Apple Mail apps. I just started getting this weird alert/dialog box saying "unable to recognize your 'imap' password, please re-enter"--which I then did--to no avail. I could not get any new mail.
Now, on my other Mac, a G4 Upgraded B&W G3 running Panther, the mail runs fine. I can see my new mail--which I tested by sending a message from the "Tiger" computers to myself. The message would be sent--I could hear the "whoosh"--but not show up in the Tiger mailboxes. Of course--got in the Panther 10.3.9 Mail In-box no sweat!
Rebuilt permissions on both machines, still no change. The e-mail works fine when I access it via the web (through AOL), but I just can't figure out what happened since Friday night? Is AOL having IMAP server trouble? I just dunno. All I do know is that my mail is now broken under Tiger and I now have to go through more hoops to get my mail--the extra webmail shenanigans are a kludge, and having an Airport card in the PB is sort of negated a lot having to do teh whole webmail access when it worked so well before just hitting my "Mail" icon.
I've checked the forums and seen nothing mentioned about any "problems" since last night, sooooo, I guess maybe it's ME...but, on both computers? Weird.
Any help wopuld be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks much,
    Yusuf Lamont

OK, I just want to make clear that Mail is asking for the Keychain password over and over again, periodically, while Mail is open. It does not ask for the passwords to individual accounts. There is no problem logging into any of the three email accounts I have activated. The normal behavior of Mail is to ask for the Keychain password once upon launch. What it does now, is continue to ask for the Keychain password periodically - perhaps every fifteen minutes, or so.
    I have tried:
Running Keychain Repair. It did find problems, repaired them, but this did not resolve the issue.
Disabled accounts one at a time, hoping to isolate the problem to one account - no luck. Then I disabled all at once. Mail continued asking for Keychain password, even though all accounts were disabled.
Deleted Keychain Items associated with these e-mail accounts, and re-created them. This did not resolve the issue.
Cursing Mail each time it asked for, and I had to re-enter, the Keychain password. This, also, did not resolve the issue.
I can't see anything in the Console associated with Mail. What would cause Mail to ask for the main password after it's already been entered? It seems to me that if the problem were coming from a server, it should cease once the account's been disabled. If it were a Keychain issue, I would expect to have problems with other apps. Obviously, it's not a problem with the Keychain Items themselves since they were deleted and re-created. That leads me to think the problem is with Mail. But, I've been wrong before....

Any Ideas? - Im no IT professional but this seems a bit broken....

I have noticed that MacMail SMTP just DOES NOT WORK when faced with very a very slow upload connection.
I have an ISP at home with an adequate download speed and a dismal upload speed. Sending mail, even plain text messages, regularly results in a timeout or server not available error.
Since I am using a laptop, I tried using the same computer, same settings to an open WiFi zone with a zippy upload connection speed. That worked like a charm; messages connected to my SMTP server and sent; even large messages with attachments that always choked at home.
So, part of the bug might be the SMTP server timeout settings? Or Apple's SMTP connection protocols? It seems that they expect a zippy broadband connection in order to work properly.
