Apple mail migration from user account

Is it possible to migrate entire mail accounts from one user to another? I had to create a new user account to get some of my Adobe applications to work. In doing so, my mail data all resides in the old user account.

  • Migrating Tiger User Account

I am migrating a user account from an old Intel iMac to a fairly recent MacBook Pro. The iMac is running 10.4.11 and the MBP is running 10.5.2.
When I try to T-Boot the iMac onto the MBP the Firewire logo appears on the iMac screen but is very jerky and staggered. The disk never mounts on the MBP's desktop and Migration Assistant cannot see it.
When I T-Boot the old iMac to another machine running Tiger, it pops right up.
Is this some way of telling me that I cannot migrate Tiger User Accounts to Leopard?
    Thanks

You're making things much more difficult than they have to be. Don't bother trying to use your iPhone to migrate your data. Just backup address book and ical, then import those into the new ones. Copy the iTunes library and have done with it.
Sync to iPhone was never intended to be a 2 way street.
I can understand not wanting to bring old junk with you when it comes to migrating your old user account and all the preference files and the like, but in the time it took you to try to find a way to get things moved via your phone, you could have done it manually.

  • AUDIT action (create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password from users account and group) users and admins in Solaris 10

    Hello.
in Solaris 10 i need auditing process create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password and etc... from users account and group.
    I set settings:
    in file syslog.conf:
    *.info;mail.none;cron.none;audit.notice            @IP-Remote-syslog-server-SIEM
    in file   /etc/security/audit_control:
    dir:/var/audit
    flags:lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no,fc,fd
    minfree:20
    naflags:lo
    plugin:name=audit_syslog.so;p_flags=lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no
    in file   /etc/security/audit_user:
    root:lo,ad:no
Now I see in the logs only the fact of a connection via SSH and run processes on behalf of users. Creation. delete users, change passwords for some reason do not is logged.
Many users. For each individual write permissions in the file /etc/security/audit_user not possible, it is likely to forget any new user (or there is a possibility in this file one line to describe the audits for all accounts?)
    Where is the mistake?

You are most likely hitting Bug 15779000 user/role/groupadd/mod/del don't audit their use.
And the fix is only available in S11.2.

  • Mail inbox shows no mail on managed user account

Upgraded to 10.5.6, mail works fine in my main account.
However in managed account for my daughter her mail shows no messages.
i can find her old inbox, I want to restore it to her inbox.. Any thoughts?
I am using parental controls, I have added all her email addresses to the list. I can see her previous recipient list.
Also when I close Mail in her user account I must force quit it, do not have to in my main user account.
iMac G5, 2 gb ram, did archive and install to load 10.5.6, all software up graded, permissions verified and fixed using Onyx and disk utility.

I certainly agree you have to wait to clone intel vs ppc!
But the settings inside the user should certainly be portable - they are just XML files and the options need to be the same even if the code has to be different when compiled as a universal binary versus PPC only code.
The time out period and on/off status as well as whether you need a password to unlock/unsleep is a system wide setting. The last admin user to make a change there wins (undoes any other settings)
The other settings can be different for each user. (Dock icons/arrangement).
Again, simply make one mac perfect and then make a disk image of the /Users/shortname folder on the "correct" mac and copy the contents of that folder to another machine. I think you will find that as long as you correctly preserver the owner permissions/bits the new mac will look exactly like the old one.

  • Intermittently can't send from Apple Mail on my Gmail account

Since buying my new MacBook Pro and migrating from Entourage, Apple Mail is proving very temperamental. I can receive mail OK, but sometimes, at random, outgoing emails just sit in the Outbox. On opening the Activity window, all I can see is Sending Message; 'connecting to server 'smtp.gmail.com' just endlessly scrubbing away. And yet sometimes, mail goes out fine. Never had this problem with Entourage. Any ideas how to rectify this problem?

It is more likely to be due to something related to the ISP at your home venue. Do you have an email account set up that they would provide and sending with the SMTP they provide?
Another thing to check is whether you are always connected to your own router, and not that of a neighbor sometimes? Can you connect your MacBook via cable to see if it works reliably in that mode? The randomness of the behavior is important, I think.

  • Migration problem: migration assistant won't migrate both user accounts from time machine backup

My Mac was formatted due to some technical issues. Before handing to the lab- I backed it up using time machine ( and only that ).
I had two user accounts on the Mac before handing it to the lab.
One of them I never actually used -I'll call it the secondary.
The second one was the main one - which I used  all the time - the principal account. All my data is there on that account.
The Mac was formatted at the lab.
Using the setup assistant I migrated one user from the Time Machine Backup.
Only later I realized it was actually the account I never used.
Since I never used it - I couldn't remember the login password and had to reset it, took a while.
I then tried to to migrate the principal account - the one I actually wanted to migrate, in the fist place, during the setup procedure -  using the migration assistant.
At the relevant window I tick the principal account- the mac does some thinking and then in the login window my only options are the secondary account and guest account, the principal account is not to be seen.
I'm really really stressed and worried.
BTW -when looking into the actual external disk used for the Time Machine at this path: computer name--> backups-->macintosh HD -->users--> principal account - I see all the folders and files with a 'no entry' icon next to them.
clicking on the folders - I get the following notice - 'the folder xxx can't be opened because you don't have permission to see the contents''
    What's going on?
    I'm running on a 2.9Ghz intel core i5
    16GB RAM 1600MHz DDR3
    SW version: 10.9.4
would appreciate any kind of help,
    Thanks
    Dana

    thanks,
the thing is the Mac was behaving strangely - that's why I sent it to the lab in the first place.
This Mac is just over a year old but it's content was initially migrated from the older mac.
And it (the new Mac) wasn't working properly from the get go..
It took ages for it to start up and wouldn't start up if any external disk was attached (via USB).
I had to start it up and only then connect external disks.
In the lab - They couldn't find and HW issues.
So they formatted and reinstalled the OS - I think that's all they've sone in the lab
The idea was to start afresh and slowly reinstall softwares - only those necessary.
So, having said all that- does that change your answer?

  • Sending mail from user accounts

I have recently switched from dial-up to broadband communications. My eMac has three user areas - my ‘system manager’ area plus two others.
The problem is that the two sub-area users can no longer send e-mail messages. The error message is “mail.btinternet.com:<user name>@btinternet.com cannot be contacted on port 25” .
I can only send mail via mailout.btinternet.com from the main account.
    All areas receive mail OK.
    Dial-up ISP is macunlimited.net
    Broadband ISP is btinternet.com
I have read the relevant Help section and believe I have set up the two mail accounts in each sub-account correctly.
Software on this Mac are OS: 10.4.3 and Mail 2.0.5

    Chris,
This is very helpful, but I would never have understood that different User Accounts were being used on your Mac from the previous terminology.
Let me approach when you are connected with btinternet acting as your ISP, first. It is normal, and not unusual, for the authentication of the SMTP to depend upon the primary email address they assign you -- this is probably your address, and with it you can probably change all the other addresses -- correct?
Thus because you are using different User Accounts, when you wife or son is attempting to send, they do not have the benefit of your Username authenticating the SMTP (as would be the case if all three addresses are in use within one User Account and Mail at the same time). The following suggestion being successful will depend upon the exact method and policies of authentication used btinternet, but have your wife and/or your son to authenticate the OUTGOING server using the same entry for Username as you enter in Mail Preferences for your account.
The same could be true for your dial-up ISP -- when you are unable to send with the SMTP for macunlimited.net, are you in fact connected via dial-up? If you are connected by dial-up and your account with macunlimited.net is the master or primary account, then I do not yet know why you cannot send.
I hope this makes sense, and is not overly complicated.

  • HT4796 How do I migrate two user accounts from the PC and create the two new user accounts on the mac?

I am migrating from a PC to a new Mac. The PC has two user accounts. I want to migrate those two accounts from the PC to the Mac, keeping everything separate as it is on the PC. How can I do this?

When you have set up migration assistant on your pc, it gives you options on what you want to migrate. Chose one account and migrate it, then choose the other account, and do the same. Two accounts will automatically be set up on the Mac.

  • Migrating from Entourage and now can't send mail except from  Mac account

I've just started using Mail after using Entourage for many years and I must say it's been a frustrating start (having separate applications for Mail, Address Book and Calendar is a pita so far). But most importantly I can't get Mail to allow me to send mail from any account other than from my .Mac account (no problems receiving mail). I'm using the same outgoing server settings as in Entourage but no joy - I get an error message saying it can't use the outgoing server. I have no problems with this in Entourage. For example, from Entourage I can send mail using my BT Internet account or my Bulldog Home account using the following outgoing mail server settings:
    SMTP SERVER: mail.bulldoghome.com
    ACCOUNT ID: [email protected]
    PASSWORD: my email password
Also, how do I access my hotmail?

Ok here's another one. When I delete a mail retrieved from a non Mac mail account (eg my BT Internet account) and empty my Trash in Mail it does not delete the email off the (BT Internet) server. I have not checked "remove copy from server after retrieving a message" so that I can access the email from multiple locations. But when I do delete it I obviously want it removed from the server.

  • Migration Assistant & User Accounts

When using MA, for transferring a user account from an iMac G4 to a Mac Pro, I was going to transfer with the same Admin User name, bob on iMac and bob on Mac Pro. MA required that I change one of the account names. When migration was complete, I had two Admin accounts on the Mac Pro, of course (Wish I could have foreseen that!).
Now - what to do? Delete the transferred account and start over? Or, MOVE certain folders, apps, files and libraries to the Mac Pro's main Admin account?
If the suggestion is to MOVE stuff, what is the better way (I know that I will be looking at Permission changes)?
Also, will iTunes libraries, iMovie projects, Safari bookmarks be a problem to move manually?
Thanks in advance for any help . . .
    bob

    Hi Bob,
You won't be moving as much stuff as you think you will. Basically you'll just be installing apps that need to be on the boot disk because they put needed items in the system folder. There aren't really all that many apps that do that. Apps with code keys, well, you might want to try transferring preferences there, but I have a bunch and I just tracked down the keys again. Apps for me that needed a whole new install were PS4 and AE4, they tightly bond with the system, and can't be dragged from one HD to another. Most everything else, games, what-not, will work just fine dragged. Again though you need to know your codes, if applicable.
The bulk of your files from your old system you can hold on to any way you want to. You could keep them on the old drive or move them where you wish. You could do what I did,.. make a clone of your old system to an external drive and keep it around for awhile as a library of sorts. In the meantime you could wipe out the data on the old drive and have a nice new disk for daily use.
Chances are good that most of what Apple puts on your machine should stay there. Other apps from other manufacturers go by a case by case basis. Permission problems shouldn't be a problem. With every new install, or dragging a free floating app with no system folder ties, new permissions will be generated, just as when you first installed them.
Maybe your Mac can have two accounts with the same name, though I wouldn't try it. Since it's a new Mac why not just wipe out your disk and reinstall off the Install and Restore disks that come with your Mac? Then just start over again and make an account with a different name.
The problem as I see it with Migration Assistant is even if it goes without a hitch, can one be sure they are not importing things that will degrade the new Macs performance?
I didn't want to go the route I did, installing everything all over again onto a fresh system. But the more I tried to move my G5s "mind" to the Mac Pro, the more mentally disturbed the Mac pro became.
I guess peoples experiences vary, but in the end I felt good about the fact that I had a brand new computer without any of the miasma of my previous systems. And really, it's one of those things that are worse thinking about than actually doing. It's actually kind of fun and interesting to see how much gunk you thought you needed, but in fact, never needed at all.

  • Apple Mail Migration

I just upgraded from a MacBook (18 mos old w/ Leopard) to a MacBook Pro. I ran the migration assistant, and all of my applications are looking and working great, except for Apple mail. It working properly, but none of my old mail has copied over.
I still am connected via firewire. I copied my ~library/mail over to my new ~library/mail and I'm still not seeing any of my old mail.
Can you help a sister out?

First, delete the /Home/Library/Mail/ folder on your new computer. To transfer your data from the new computer follow this guide:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

  • Problems with Apple Mail retrieval from EarthLink

I just bought a new computer (MacBook Pro 10.8.2 Mountain Lion) and when trying to set up Apple Mail v.6.2 I have a problem. It won't connect properly with my ISP email (EarthLink). I am unable to retrieve any POP mail on Apple Mail. It keeps saying "Logging in to the Earthlink POP server "pop.earthlink.net" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct....." However, I am able to send mail via Apple Mail because the outgoing mail server (smtpauth.earthlink.net) does work. It's strange because it's the same user and password. So I can send but not retrieve using Apple Mail.
I also have Thunderbird, which I don't really like, and its POP setup both sends and retrieves from EarthLink without a problem. Plus I can always go to the EarthLink website if necessary. So this is not critical, but I prefer Apple Mail.
    Any ideas?
(I'm also going to contact EarthLink to see if they can help.)

I'm having this difficulty with my shared host provider as well.  hostpapa.ca keeps telling me to 'check my account settings.'  This is not difficult to do and the error code I keep getting tells me that there's a problem connecting to the mail server.
While I argue with them, is it possible that there is a problem from within Apple Mail or with my wifi?  Mail works well when I'm not on my home network - at the office, on 3G, if I use webmail, if I connect directly to my DSL modem.  I tried to delete the account and add it in again - but it just won't connect when on wifi.
I'm wondering if there's anyone who has an answer to this...?
