Apple mail multiple copies in trash

With Apple Mail on my macbook pro I have multiple copies of a deleted mail appearing in the trash. This just started. How can I stop this?

I have had this problem as well for some time now, only this happens on my iMac running Maverick.  If I delete an email, 10 copies show up in the trash.  Does anyone in the community know what is going on?

  • Apple Mail, multiple mail accounts, setting a default.

    Hi,
I have a client using Apple Mail under Mac OS X 10.6 and it is configured with two different email accounts, one account being the users email address (I will refer to this as EMAIL1), the other account being her bosses email address (I will refer to this as EMAIL2).
Everything is working fine apart from an occasional bug where by the user selecst the Inbox of EMAIL1 and then composes a new email which should by default list the sender as EMAIL1 but shows as EMAIL2.
As I said previously this only occasionally happens and hopefully the resolution will be to ditch the file "com.apple.mail.plist" from ~/Library/Preferences, and rename the "Mail" folder to "Mail.old" within ~/Library and recreate, and lastly recreate the account from scratch. Any other suggestions here would be appreciated.
My question to this thread is how do you permanently set the default mail account. There's nothing obvious within Apple Mail's Preferences so I'm guessing that a plist file would need edited. Does anyone have any experience with this?

My question to this thread is how do you permanently set the default mail account.
Go to Mail -> Preferences, click the Composing icon and set the desired account in the "Send new messages from" pop-up. This does not prevent mail being sent from other accounts, it simply changes the default. By default, it sends from the account that owns the currently selected mailbox, which is why new messages sometimes come up with EMAIL2 as the sender.

  • Apple Mail, multiple devices with POP

    Cheers folks.
I admit, I'm not much of a Mac user, so please bear with me on what might be a "silly" question. I've been browsing and Googling this issue and have yet to find a reasonable answer.
Someone I know was having issues with her email. She has three devices; iPad, iPhone and MacBook Pro. Her email is via POP. All three had been working just fine until she returned from a short vacation, when her email was _retrieving_ just fine with the iPad and iPhone, but not her MacBook. She could send emails via the MacBook without any problems, and I found the option to check connection in Apple Mail (connection doctor, I believe it's called?) which showed all authentication was going through just fine, so I could rule out bad password (she'd changed her iTunes password while on vaca). But no matter what we did, she couldn't receive emails on the MacBook. Oh, and of course I verified that she had the correct mail server info and credentials, which were all set as she hadn't touched the device quite a few days.
I verified that her Apple Mail was set to leave messages on the server for 30 days, and checked her POP settings on the iPhone and iPad (info from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3228) to ensure they were doing the same. All were. Then, on a whim, I powered down her iPad and iPhone. That did the trick. A week's worth of emails just leapt into her inbox.
Now, this has me curious. While I don't often support users who use Macs or iDevices, it has tweaked my interest on what might be the cause. Has anyone else run into this, or is there a readme on the subject? I'm sure someone will ask me for assistance with these things as more and more friends and family are iPhone and iPad users.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Apple Mail 4.5 Deleting Trash

I'm finding that Mail 4.5 is taking the initiative and deleting trashed mail older than "today".  My accounts are set to delete trash "Never".  I prefer to comb through it periodically and clean house; so it doesn't get filled to overflowing and, at least by my reckoning, shouldn't be wiping out either Sent or Trashed emails; yet it's doing both.  I'm guessing this might be some kind of corruption, but not where to look to clean it up.

Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
    Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:

  • Apple mail on Mountain lion

New to the mac world, and completely frustrated by the fact that Apple mail retains copies of my sent messages, but does not share them with the Exchange servers, so I can't retrieve them from other machines.
I have seen posts about using
Mailbox>use this mailbox for.... but those are all greyed out
I assume that "store sent messages on server"  means that my sent messages should go to the Exchange servers.  but they don't.
    can you help?
    thanks - macnewbie

I only asked as it seemed apple have removed a feature from mountain lion that was actually quite useful, that being the option to save account passwords in keychain or not. I have automatic login enabled which i guess i should switch off and add require password on wake for more security.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • Apple Mail 5 use this mailbox for

Alright, so, I have been playing with the updated Mail application in Lion. I love the new interface but I seem to be missing an important part or just unable to find it. When setting up an account to connect to Gmail's IMAP I seem to be unable to get the common folders, Sent/Draft/Trash/Spam, working in unison with Gmail's Sent/Draft/Trash/Spam labels. In the previous versions of Mail I've been able to right-click each of those folders and click "Use this mailbox for..." to which I would select the proper folder. This option seems to be missing in Apple Mail 5 or, the very least, I'm unable to find it or an equal option.
When creating an account to use with Gmail I have played with the preference checkboxes for those common folders. Leaving them checked I will get a new label created in Gmail instead of the email going into the real folder. For instance, if I delete an email it will go into my trash on the mac and it will then have the label "Deleted Messages" but not actually be in the trash in Gmail. The same goes for Sent Mail as well. If I uncheck these options then I get duplicate email in the Mail Sent folder as well as Gmail's Sent label. On top of this, if I click the sent button I in the new Mail interface I ONLY see mail I have sent from Apple Mail and not items that are in my sent mail label for Gmail. Which is annoying.
So, in short, is it possible, and if so then how, do I get Gmail and Apple Mail's Sent/Draft/Trash/Spam folders perfectly synced so that it will work like how it used to in Snow Leopard or even how it currently works on the iPhone? If I can not get this functionality then I guess I will have to say goodbye to Apple Mail which is a shame because I really love the new interface.
If this has been asked and answered/resolved can I please get a link to the discussion? I've searched but seem to be unable to find any possible answers.

It is an exchange account. In Mail>Preferences>Accounts I do not see the IMAP Path Prefix, which isn't surprising (when it is no IMAP-account).
Coming to your question, Ernie: I created this account longer ago, maybe 2 years? I created this subfolder from a Windows computer and recently made the swith for my business computer to a MBA. Great computer! Strange thing is, the mails in the subfolder are shown correctly in my iPad Mail app... Also: I created such a subfolder in my Inbox and this mail is shown correctly... Strange... For this mailbox (and for all others) the options in the dropdown menu 'use this mailbox for' etc are all greyed out...

  • Using gmail - multiple copies of mail being written are forwarded to the trash -did not have this issue with 10.6.8 -

I have two Imacs - the master one is plugged in directly into the modem, it runs with 10.6.8 and works fine (this computer is not connected to Icloud)- the other  is connected to a router which is connected to the master unit and the modem. that unit was upgraded to 10.9.4 and it is connected to Icloud - both Imacs use gmail accounts for e-mail.
The "slave" unit running on 10.9.4 creates multiple copies of mail being written and sends those copies to the trash file. We have had up to fifty copies of one e-mail in the trash. That computer worked fine under OSX10.6.8 - We have visited the apple store genius bar with this Imac, and consulted the apple phone support service to no avail.
while it does take a long time to transmit the e-mails, addressees get only one copy. Your help will be appreciated.

9/16/14 update - another call to apple phone support revealed that this is a known issue that has no solution at this time.

  • Why does mail program show multiple copies of a message, in various stages of completion in the trash folder ?

I am using an iMac with OS 10.9.4, Mail 7.3. My mail trash file contains multiple copies of partially complete messages I've sent. This problem seemed to begin when I began using "Maverick".

I have this exact same problem.
32 copies of one email. 3 o4 copies of others…
Rebuilding the trash makes no difference at all.
Any other suggestions? I have rebuilt my other mailboxes as well.

  • Multiple copies of email appearing in Apple Mail

Suddenly I am starting to see multiple copies of an email in me Apple mail client.
This seems to have started when I did the software upgrade earlier today - although I have no idea if this is a coincidence, or part of the problem.
fyi I am using Apple mail with a Google App mail account. This has worked perfectly for a number of years until today. When I look in my gmail account using the web client there is only one copy of the email.
    Any ideas?

In general iTunes is slightly more liberal when it comes to spelling than the iPod. As the iPod enumerates the tracks it will see each different spelling as a new artist so it may list one album multiple times. The iPod also takes no account of the Album Artist field so tracks with guest artists may also be viewed as separate albums. Disk No. & No. of disks may also affect the order in which tracks are enumerated or grouped. For a given album the following terms should all have exactly the same values. Album Title, Artist (except for Compilations), No. of Tracks, No. of Discs. & Part of a Compilation. The Sort Artist & Sort Album fields take precedence over Artist & Album and, if used, should either have the same values for all tracks, or match with the existing values for Artist & Album on other tracks.
Normally selecting all the tracks from the album and overtyping the Album, Artist & Album Artist info. is enough to fix this issue, although once I had some weird extended character that refused to be replaced in certain tracks. In this case the answer was simply to add some random info. into each field, e.g. add X onto each value, apply the changes, then remove the excess text & reapply.

  • Apple Mail sending multiple copies of email. What's the cure?, Apple Mail sending multiple copies of email. What's the cure?, Apple Mail sending multiple copies of email. What's the cure?

Recently, my Apple Mail has been sending from two to six copies of email, timed to the same minute. I've taken to using Thunderbied (which I don't prefer) to avoid it. My theory is that if I can reload Lion it might cure it, but since Lion only comes as a download, I don't know how.
I've had MacKeeper in place since before the problem, but updating it became impossible. I emailed that program and was advised to trash it, do a cold reboot and then download it again. I did, and it hasn't helped.
    Any suggestions?

MacKeeper is so bad, it has earnt the distinction of a User Tip of it's own
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036
After dragging the app to the trash, you will need to clean up using something like  AppTrap, AppZapper, AppCleaner etc. The official MacKeeper uninistaller leaves advert popups still appearing on your computer.

  • Mail is putting multiple copies of sent emails in my drafts folder, or in trash.

Mail is putting copies of emails successfully sent in my drafts folder, sometimes multiple copies, sometimes in trash.
Also, new email keeps entering my inbox after I've moved it to other mailboxes or to the trash or junk mail. Also, if I search for a name to which I have sent or from which I have received an email, the results shows a copy of each mail in all these mailboxes: Important, All Mail, Sent Mail, Sent G-Mail. This is a recent phenomenon. For every sent email I get 5 copies in my trash box.

I phoned up Appe Support yesterday and i discovered that SOME (not all) of my trouble was caused by my 2 Gmail accounts, which werent correctly designated as Gmail Server WITH the correct password, it was set to use the server from one of my other accounts.
I do still have another problem which doesnt go away, i open Mail normally and there is ghost Open Window, which cannot be opened, to view my Mail i have to open a NEW viewer window, even though there is a Window open all ready, the Ghost window !

  • Sending GMAIL from Mail.app generates multiple items in Trash

I just recently began using Mail.app for my Gmail and I’ve got a problem. I noticed that when I draft a short Gmail and send it out, I get multiple copies of the e-mail in Trash. But each copy there contains only a few words from the original. For example, the first copy may contain only the first three words of the original. Subsequent copies in Trash display the remainder of the original. I sent out a 20 word e-mail and it was broken down into 10 different entries in Trash. Anyone else have the same problem?

    jackgm,
I have to Gmail accounts; a free account, and a university Google Apps (.edu) account. Both accounts behave exactly the same on three different Macs.
The bottom line is it's a pretty well known issue with Apple Mail and Gmail. The easiest solution is to turn off "Save Drafts on Server".
It's a minor annoyance but hardly a major issue. For a long while, if you mapped Sent in Mail.app to the Sent Items folder in Gmail, you'd get duplicate copies of all your sent e-mails--Apple has since fixed this (thankfully).

  • Searching mail shows multiple copies of the same email

I use gmail through Mail, and I noticed there are multiple copies of the same e-mail (on further inspection, it looks like the copies are at different stages/edits) show up in my Trash folder. Is there any way to stop this?

The same thing just happened in my Blackberry gmail folder... I sent an email from my computer and 20 copies showed up on my phone.
