Apple Mail, New Message Sound upon wake

Whenever I get back to my iMac after a day of it sitting in sleep mode and I attempt to wake the Mac it makes the New Message Sound a couple of times.
I assume this is one noise for every email I recieved during the day but already checked on my iPhone. Its a minor hinderence. I was just wondering if anyone had a fix.

Had the same problem with sound for outgoing and incomming mail not working after computer went to sleep.
Found an easy fix'
go to System Preferances-Energy Saver and uncheck the box for "Put hard disks to sleep when possible"
Found that system would not restart the sound after sleep but required a restart for it to work again, by unchecking this box system would not go into "hard sleep". worked like a charm for me.

Is there any other alert than sound e.i screen nudge or something appear on the screen when the new email message arrives.  Although I have hearing impaired and cannot hear the sounds.  I understand the number of unread message will appear on the icon sitting on the dock but it is too small to be noticed.  Thank you for your assistance.

Erik Hinterbichler's free 'Herald' is an elegant solution to this:
    http://erikhinterbichler.com/software/herald/
It pops up a configurable pane when a new message arrives, displaying the opening text. You can close the pane or delete the message. Note that when running it you should minimize (command-M) not hide, Mail or the Mail window will open as well.

  • What do I do to resolve an ongoing problem with the MAIL "new messages sound".?  If I reboot the iMAC and keep the mail app open after a number of messages come in the NEW MESSAGE Sound quits. I have to reboot the machine to get it back.

New Messages sound quits after several messages have arrived. I've tried several passes at resolving but nothing I have done seems to work. Sometimes I have to reboot the imac several times to get the New Messages Sounds back. Everything else works. The only thing I haven't done is reinstall the OS and that seems foolhardy.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.
    Matt

  • Apple Mail new messages opening behind active window

I have been noticing that new mail messages often open behind active windows, especially Microsoft office (Word).  When I create a new message, the new message will often open and sit behind the current open document.  I have noticed this mostly when using a second display.  It also does not seem to be isolated to just Mail, but that's where I see it the most.  Has anyone else seen this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Using OS 10.5.8, Apple Mail, new message symbol appears but not the mail

Using OS10.5.8, apple mail, it shows I have a new message but when I go to that mailbox there is no message. Then when a new message comes in, the first hidden message is now gone. What happened to it, was it really there in the first place?

    Hello, as a test...
Make a new Smart Mailbox that only includes Unread Mails, do they show in that Smartbox?
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

  • "New Message" Sound Not Playing In Mail 5

Since I have upgraded to OS X Lion and Mail 5, I have noticed that the "new message" sound is not playing when I receive a new email.  I have checked the settings, and the option for this is enabled.  I am using Gmail and have the "idle command" option enabled, and I suspect that this may be involved in the issue.
I have read that in the past Mail had an issue where it would only play the "new message" sound if it had received the new message by polling the server.  If the new message was received through the "idle" command, then the "new message" sound would not be played.  Perhaps this is the same bug.
Is anyone else having this issue?  I know I could just turn off the "idle" command, but I'm looking for an actual fix to the underlying issue.  I've reported it to Apple, but I would like to see if anyone else has noticed this.

I was about to try your suggestion, but after sending a few more test emails, I discovered that it does in fact play the sound sometimes.  I sent about 20 test emails, and they were all received using the "idle" command, with about 75% of them playing the sound.  There was a 5-10 second delay between the messages being received and the sound playing that I don't remember from Snow Leopard, but I'm not positive about that.
It shouldn't be the actual sound that is the issue, being that it is played sometimes, but I still don't know why it's not playing every time.  I tried receiving messages with the app running in the background, with it minimized, and with it as the active window, but I couldn't find any specific instance that caused it to not play the sound.
I wasn't having this issue in Mail 4.  It didn't start until I installed Lion, which I did a clean install of, if it matters.
I'm still open to thoughts on this, and thank you for your help.

  • Mail 4.1,not playing "new message" sound, and some sent mail not in outBox

For some reason, no "new message" sound is being played (has been like this for a few weeks), and some (~1/10) sent mail does not show up in the sent box (been like this for a long time).
And yes, preferences are set to "play new messages sound"
    Any ideas?

I would guess that's an IMAP account, go into mail preferences and select advanced tab for that account and uncheck use IDLE command and the new mail sound should work.
Not sure about the sent mail problem.

  • Is it possible to disable New Message sound for SPAM messages?

I inherited a role email account which receives an incredible amount of spam. Mail's SPAM filters do a good job or routing these messages to the SPAM box and keeping them out of my inbox, but I still receive a "New Message" sound notification every time a new SPAM message arrives. Is it possible to disable the "New Message" sound alert for SPAM messages while still receiving the alert for new messages that arrive in my inbox?
    Thanks,
    jason

    Try this:
Go into Preferences -> General and uncheck the box that says "Play sounds for other mail actions".
I'm not sure if it will work since that's really still "new" mail, but it might be worth trying.

  • How do I change the "new messages" sound? (Thunderbird 31.3.0 on MacBookPro running OSX 10.9.5)

    I followed the instructions at
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-customize-new-mail-sound
to change the "new messages" sound. It does play when I click on "Play" in the Preferences pane.
However, when new mail comes in, it plays the default sound. So why is it ignoring the Preference?

I was wrong. It's playing both the default sound AND the sound I selected. How do I get the default sound to stop?

  • Apple Mail delets messages on the Server POP3

Apple Mail delets messages on the Server Method: POP3. I use the preference to delete message if they where transfered out of the incoming box.
Since 10.6 this seems not longer to work, what is going wrong?
    System: 10.6.4

Hi there. This feature should work, as I have 10.6.4 and use it personally. Note that once a message is deleted from POP mail cannot put it back, so this setting once checked only applies to new messages.
Make sure you look at the options about removing the message from the server when it's removed from the trash or after xx days.
If these are set correctly, you may find luck in unchecking the box for leaving the messages on the server and then rechecking it.
Lastly, you could try deleting the mail account and recreating it.

  • Apple Mail opens messages before log in

When I launch Apple Mail, several message windows open with message contents displayed; this is before I log in to the mail server. How can I make sure Mail waits for me to log in before it opens any message windows?
    Thanks!

I think you mentioned some widget you downloaded that introduced a NEW button ?? That's what makes it normal for you, I fear.
    Try this workaround:
select the first message in your Inbox list
Employ whatever means to mark it UNread with your preferred method,
THEN ⇧ Shift + Down arrow key to just above the Subject title you wish to read
THEN, Down arrow key or click the next in the list ("Locator for authorized repair/ ..." in my example)
    VOILA!!
    Repeat as necessary
