Apple mail not cleaning up POP3 server?

I use Apple Mail (in POP3 mode) and Spamsieve, and it appearsthat it never removes junk mail and/or moved mail from my mail server (a Unix hosted domain). I have "delete permanently on move from inbox" and "delete permanently when deleted in Mail" set properly.
How do I know? If I read/move/delete all mail in my inbox, and then manually delete all the mail in the junk mail folder, then use something like Thunderbird in IMAP mode, I found that my /var/mail/sparker was 95+Mb full of garbage from the previous year (or much more)
Interestingly, if I have message that lands in my inbox (no rules processing) and I manually delete them, they get removed properly from the /var/mail/sparker file. If Rules or SpamSieve move them, they never get deleted properly.
So... For those of you with external hosts for your mail, go check your /var/mail/<userid> file. I'd bet they're huge.....
I've got to the point where I read and process all my mail using AppleMail, then quit, launch thunderbird, and delete everything manually. Seems ridiculous, but that's what I'm doing now.
I like SpamSieve enough (with 99.7% accuracy) that I'd prefer not to switch to Thunderbird exclusively. But if I have to keep processing mail using BOTH tools, then I'm going to have to switch.

I have [...] "delete permanently when deleted in
Mail"
set properly.
Considering that no such setting exists in Mail, I
find this hard to believe.
Wow... Sorry I upset you. I was asking this question from another machine, and hoped people would be intuit that I really meant "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message". I was obviously wrong that you could intuit that I just got the exact string setting incorrectly.
I found that my /var/mail/sparker was 95+Mb
full of garbage from the previous year (or much
more)
What does /var/mail have to do with Apple
Mail?
On my web host that hosts my domain, all their mail pools in /var/mail/<user> until I hook up my Powerbook and download it as POP3 mail. If I don't go get it, it accumulates in this file. It's standard Unix type mail.
Interestingly, if I have message that lands in my
inbox
(no rules processing) and I manually delete them,
they
get removed properly from the /var/mail/sparker
file.
That's interesting, indeed. But even more interesting
is that I manage 8 POP accounts in Mail (5 different
"external hosts"), and my /var/mail
directory is always empty. I don't even have a
/var/mail/username file...
I'm sorry to hear that. I do have a /var/mail/<username> where all my mail accumulates. It's on a FreeBSD server. It does exist, as does a mail file for everybody else on that host.
So... For those of you with external hosts for
your
mail, go check your /var/mail/<userid> file. I'd
bet
they're huge.....
I bet they aren't. Actually, I bet no such file
exists at all in most cases...
I can generate a listing here, but that wouldn't solve this problem.
I'm sorry that I upset you by asking this question. I've used many email clients on Mac, Windows, and quite as few flavors of Unix, and this mail client is the first time I've encountered the lack of clean up of the POP3 mailbox.
However, in a post earlier this evening, I mentioned that I changed the setting for the "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message:" from "Right Away" to "When moved from Inbox" (and yes, those are the exact text strings in the Accounts -> Advanced Preference pane), and the messages are now removed correctly from /var/mail/<user> on my host.
So, something that the rules processing interacting with the "Right Away" setting is not cleaning up properly. Changing it to "When moved from Inbox" is cleaning up messages that the Rules move to other folders (including messages that Spamsieve moves to other folders).

  • Apple mail not uploading messages from server

i've got a weird problem - about a week ago, my apple mail program stopped uploading messages to one of my emails accounts. i've been getting messages to that account, and when i right click on the account, apple mail shows me that i have like 100 + unread messages on my pop server, but for some reason, it isn't uploading the messages so that i can access them.
i've spent nearly 2 hours troubleshooting. i even deleted the whole account and made it again, and it did the same thing. this makes me think there is something with my email host or something.
    any ideas?

When you say “uploading” you actually mean “downloading”, right?
Sometimes messages left on the server clog up the account there, or Mail chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem will probably require deleting one or more messages from the server. What are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings for this account?
You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded doing Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, you may use the Account Info window to remove specific messages from the server. And if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try first removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded. If that doesn’t work, you’ll probably have to delete the first message not downloaded yet. You may want to try to download those messages with another mail client such as Thunderbird first, to avoid losing them -- and use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import them back into Mail afterwards if you wish.

  • Apple Mail delets messages on the Server POP3

Apple Mail delets messages on the Server Method: POP3. I use the preference to delete message if they where transfered out of the incoming box.
Since 10.6 this seems not longer to work, what is going wrong?
    System: 10.6.4

Hi there. This feature should work, as I have 10.6.4 and use it personally. Note that once a message is deleted from POP mail cannot put it back, so this setting once checked only applies to new messages.
Make sure you look at the options about removing the message from the server when it's removed from the trash or after xx days.
If these are set correctly, you may find luck in unchecking the box for leaving the messages on the server and then rechecking it.
Lastly, you could try deleting the mail account and recreating it.

    -Ryan

  • Apple Mail Not Syncing

I am having issues with my apple mail not syncing on my computer.  This just started happening, was working fine up to this point.  We use MDaemon, and nothing appears to be wrong on the server.  I can see all the mail on my iPhone and through World Client.  This is the error I'm getting.  I have backups of my computer, what components should I try to reinstall from "resources".
    System consistently reports(s) : SyncServer[985]: [0x7fada840bdb0] |DataManager|Warning| Client com.apple.Mail sync alert tool path /System/Library/Frameworks/Message.framework/Resources/MailSync does not exist.

I have reinstalled Mountain Lion, and this still did not help.  Mail still not syncing.  When I look in the "System/Library/Framewoks/Message.frame/Resources"  I do not see anything that is called MailSync.  I have looked through my Time Machine backups and see it way back in Jan. 2013.  I did copy it into the "Resoures" folder, still not working.  I have deleted my account and reset up, still not working.  My issue started late March 2013.  I don't know what else to try.

  • Apple Mail with Office 365 Exchange server

Is anyone here using Apple Mail with Office 365 Exchange server on Mountain Lion? I have just upgraded to Mt Lion and decided to switch from Outlook to Apple Mail.app. My account was added successfully. Even contacts, calendar, tasks and notes work very well. My problem with Mail.app is that it does not sync any emails in subfolders prior to the day I added the account to Mail. For any older emails I have to open Outlook for Mac and look it up there. Other than this issue Mail is working well for all new incoming and outgoing emails.
    Thanks

  • Blackberry notes sync with Apple mail notes

When I sync my blackberry it says that the notes sync with the Apple mail notes, but I cannot find the Apple mail notes. How do I access them??
    Thank you.

I had the same problem. It actually syncs the memos to Mail. Open Mail from your computer, and on the left side there should be drop menus called: Mail, Reminders, and RSS. On mine, Reminders was closed, so I dropped it, and there was another menu called "Notes", and viola! There were all the Blackberry Notes, ready to go! It's literally saved in "Apple Mail Notes".
This thread is what made me look there: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12187767
    Hope I helped!

  • Apple mail not showing all the messages?

In Apple mail, for my icloud account, I have some mailboxes which show the wrong number of messages, it shows too few.
As an example, a mailbox contains 150 messages, but apple mail reports there are only 146.
I rebuilt the mailbox and let apple mail do its thing. In the activity window I can see there are 150 messages. Yet, once apple mail has finished rebuilding the mailbox, it still tells me there are 146 messages. What's going wrong? Why would apple mail not show all the messages while in the activity window it clearly shows it knows there are 150?

    Solved!
This was too weird to be real. Apple mail does not show messages it believes to be duplicates, and buy, does it make big mistakes in deciding what are duplicate messages and what not! Some of my mailboxes had over 100 "duplicates" not showing according to apple mail.
I found a solution thanks to this topic:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18265121#18265121
    defaults delete com.apple.mail AlwaysShowDuplicates
does yield an error in 10.8.2 ( Domain (com.apple.mail) not found. Defaults have not been changed. )
defaults write com.apple.mail AlwaysShowDuplicates -bool true
    Does work brilliantly though!

  • Access Apple Mail notes outside of Mail itself

Does anyone know if there is a program that simply lets you view/edit your Apple Mail notes OUTSIDE of Apple Mail? I just can't wrap my head around opening my email client to write random notes. I can't seem to find anything.
    Thanks!
    Frank

    Ah Thank You, [ Jeffery Jones2 ] !
I now remember stumbling across this and wondering why I was in Mail and not Finder when I entered Time Machine a while back. <hehe> Now I get it!
Easy restoration of my Mail Notes! All is well again now that I verified iTunes sync is turned "off" and that the MobileMe sync is turned "on"—no more conflicts.

  • Entourage Notes Export to Apple Mail Notes

I have searched but could not find a solution yet to export Entourage Notes to Apple Mail Notes. I have more then 2000 notes so I hope to find an easy solution to this. If it will not work with Apple Mail Notes maybe someone has an application which will just have the notes and ideally sync them with iPhone. Thanks

    hello
I get 50% of your needs: export entourage notes (to another soft like MarkspaceNotesbook). I let you find how to use them (files.txt) in Mail. Let me know!
There is a solution to export these notes by using a smartphone (or perhaps it works too with your ipod).
    - connect the device (mobile phone I mean) to the Mac,
    - sync the notes from Mac to the device (using PocketMac software or Missing sync software)
    - use now the explore feature of PocketMac or Missing Sync. (to "see" on the device).
    - explore the device and find your notes
    - drag the notes with you mouse, from the device to a notes software (for example MarkspaceNotesbook. I tryed also with Yojimbo but it has hard to do it).
    - Markspacenotesbook will take the note and keep safe their titles.
    - this process could have bugs. I discover once it refused big quantities. Drag and dropp 10 per 10 if it is the cases.
    Hope it works for you

  • Comcast & Apple Mail not sending

Hi, I added a Comcast accout to Apple Mail 5.0 in Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1, and once i did, i recieved my emails that were stored on the comcast accout. However, when i try to send an email from Apple Mail using the Comcast outgoing server: smtp.comcast.net, the spinning wheel of death keeps spinning next to the tab in the sidebar marked Sent. And even trying to quit Apple Mail doesnt fix it, when i relaunch it its still spinning. I checked the Connection Doctor under Window>Connection Doctor and it says "Connecting to Server..." but never connects.... Help?! I have already tried deleteing it and starting over but nothing is working, im afraid to try it again in fear of getting the spinning wheel of death. Any tips would be helpful. Thank You!

  • New Verizon pop server, Apple Mail not working

    Hi...
I got the email about the new pop server in the spring and gave it a whirl.  On my ibook, Apple Mail says it connects just fine, but I never received any of the mail I know is in the inbox.  I sent test messages to myself, and they never came in.  So I went back to the old setting which worked.
Yesterday, I got another email from Verizon saying I'd better switch to the new pop server because the old setting was going away.  So I switched to the pop server and gave it another try.  Same deal.  Apple Mail diagnostics say connectivity to the pop and smtp server is fine, but no mail comes in.
Anyone have any idea why my incoming mail never arrives?
I haven't tried it on Windows systems.
    Thanks
    Mark
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had HUGE problems moving over to POP server on my iPad. The "trick" is to first DELETE your existing account, and then go back through Settings to Add Account ...
Also, for both Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server, set Use SSL to "ON"
Performed the same upgrade on my iPhone, which went through very easily.
Once I did the upgrade to the iPad, I did NOT need to update my mail server on my iMac desktop.

  • Apple Mail not working with IMAP account

I have been using Entourage for my email with several IMAP email accounts. SOme of the accounts I was getting occasional errors so I thought I would try Apple Mail.
I am able to successfully set up the accounts in Mail (i.e. it successfully logs into server) however it does not get any of the mail nor does it get any of the mail folders that are on the IMAP server (viewing email using Web Mail or even going back to Entourage shows the emails on the account). Are there any special (hidden) tricks that I need to do to get Mail to work with a standard IMAP mail server?

I have a very similar problem. Apparently IMAP access is better than POP3. Well IMAP slows my Mac to a complete stop whereas POP3 is seamless. I deleted my POP3 mailboxes after successfully accessing my GMail accounts via IMAP, then it slowed down.
I've deleted the IMAP accounts a few times, but each time a new account is created it forces me to accept IMAP with no option for POP3. The help file also contains no information on POP3.
I get about 50 emails everyday and my usual point of email access has just become redundant, I must now rely on email via my browser and .
I made this change because the iPhone does not sync downloaded emails with Apple Mail. In Mail on my Mac, the one GMail inbox I have setup says there are 11 unread which it eventually shows yet none appear unread. I'll have to rely on web-based email until this is resolved.
Can anyone help with these IMAP access problems?

  • Apple Mail not downloading mail

Even after the latest so called fix for Mavericks my Apple Mail still does not automatically download my email from Gmail.  I have to go through old ones and delete something to prompt the download of the new ones to begin.  Its very frustrating having all my new email on my phone but if its something I wont to view on the computer I can't as its not there waiting for me. Mail that was sent 3 hours ago has only just downloaded into Apple Mail although I have had it on my phone and iPad for all this time.  If the latest fix was meant to fix this problem why does it still exist?

Try rebuilding each of your inbox's and see of that allows the download to proceed. Select the mailbox and then from the menu select Mailbox > Rebuild. Alternatively check to see if there is a message on the server that has an unknown sender. Delete it if that is the case and try downloading again.
Try disabling either one of the accounts (temporarily) and see if it is just one of them is causing the problem. Do that via Mail Preferences. Select Account and in the Advanced tab uncheck "enable this account". The account will disappear from the viewer window but the underlying account definition and details are not deleted so to make it visible again simply check "enable this account".

  • Links in Apple Mail not opening in Firefox 15

Links in messages in Apple Mail have recently stopped opening Firefox tabs and windows. The Mail window fades, as if a new window or application were being accessed, but nothing happens. I have reset my default browser (according to Mozilla instructions) in both Firefox and Safari. I have also checked all add-ons to see if they might be causing the problem and nothing changes when all are disabled. If I set Safari as default browser, it works fine.
Any thoughts? (FYI, while not totally incompetent or technically illiterate, I am also not all that schooled in the details of computer know-how and haven't gotten much beyond the options available on the toolbar and the limited information found through a quick Google search. It seems others have had this issue in the past, but I haven't found a fix that works for me yet.)
    Thanks.

    Hi!
Is Mail the only external app that has that problem?
I remember having a similar issue and that was caused by an add-on who was messing up with the Firefox behavior.
If this is the case, you should see the same behavior when opening links from other apps.
To resolved, you have 2 options. Either use Firefox Reset ([[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] ) or try to use Safe Mode ([[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]] ).
Firefox Reset will reset the majority of your Firefox settings (including the add-ons) while keeping the most important information safe (Bookmarks, etc). In the other hand Safe Mode will allow you to test Firefox with a clean profile and then it will allow you to disable all the Add-ons. If that solves the issue, you should activate the add-ons one by one until you find the one it's causing the problem.
    I hope this helps you.
