Apple Mail On My Mac - want to keep old messages

I have LOTS of messages saved "ON MY MAC" in Apple Mail from an old job.  I'd like to keep these messages once the IMAP based account is cancelled.  Will I lose my old messages that are filed "ON MY MAC" when the email account is cancelled?  Any suggestions on what I can do to save the history of these emails?

OK, so it means I will lose them all if I don't export them, right?  Is there a format to easily save the emails in so that I can still spotlight search them?  Or do I just have to re-import the .mbox files?

  • When exporting and then importing Apple Mail from one mac to another I get "Some messages could not be imported. Partially imported mailbox will be labeled IMPORT" . That mailbox does not appear.

    Any help would be welcome

This is a bug in Mail. The mailbox archiving function does not include attachments, which  gives the error with the import. To workaround this you can create a mailbox in Mail and copy to it all emails you want to export. Then go in Finder to [user]/Library/Mail/Mailboxes en select the created mailbox. Copy this to the public directory of your other mac. Then start Mail on that other mac and import the mailbox from the public directory. Should work now.

  • Need multiple 'MAIL' Icons.   Have two mail accounts and i want to keep them separate but want to EASILY switch back and forth from the main screen instead of going through, Settings, Mail, and selecting account. Major pain

Have two mail accounts and i want to keep them separate but want to EASILY switch back and forth from the main screen instead of going through, Settings, Mail, and selecting account. Major pain the butt.  This has been a request from Apple users for many years.    it's great you can now combine all emails into one, but some people want them kept separate and have separate icons on the main page.   They could easily do this by having one "MAIL" account as white and another red.  Or put MAIL 1 and MAIL 2.    Or an actual label that the mail accounts are called on the ICONS!!
    Help!

...I could switch back and forth between accounts while in the mailbox, with one button.  I think that is what you are referring to?  Whoever said it's just a simple switching - you obviously haven't had the pleasure of using an Android device.  It's not that quick to go back and forth - definitely not efficient...
Not that it matters a lot, Android vs iPhone interface is largely a matter of personal preference and what you know... I'm not sure which one you're saying is not efficient...
    In any event...
I currently have two email accounts setup.  My iPhone main page Mailbox settings reads:
    Mailboxes
    Inboxes
    All Inboxes
    Gmail
    [email protected]
    Accounts
    Gmail
    [email protected]
I wish there an efficient way to move back and forth while in the "Inbox" between accounts.  Also, Why does one gmail account show as "Gmail" and another as the actually address?
The names are based on the names you gave the accounts when you set them up.
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap the account you want to re-name. Go to the "Description" field and put in what ever you want.
Second, there is no way to quickly choose a bunch of emails to delete. I have to manually go into each one and move it to the Trash folder.
If you tap the edit button in the upper right while in mail, you can select multiple items to move, delete or mark (flag).
I don't want any of the condescending remarks, that I've read here and in other forums.  I'm honestly looking for a solution, which I think you are too!  One thing I realized is that iPhone users in these forums are really defensive and quick to say "that's how it is, live with it, if you don't like it go away"  Um...the only thing that tells me is you are pretty bitter and have kept telling yourself that, to force yourself to like your device.  I prefer to express my issues, and find solutions.  There is ALWAYS a solution...
I think what you will find is that many people here, myself included, tend to get a bit short with people who start off with attacks or whining about how something has been asked for for years and should be easy, rant about things that have already been beaten to death multiple times in the forums, talk about how much better Android or BB are at something (really... if it's that much better, why did they buy an iPhone to begin with?), etc., or continue to ask questions that could easily be answered with a simple search, or even just by looking back at the last dozen posts to the forum, half of which probably asked the EXACT SAME question.
I don't think any of us go out of our way to be rude or uncivil.  That said, attacking the people who are attempting to help you is much more likely to generate a response of 'if you don't like it, go away', than it is to generate something that will be truly helpful.

  • Is it advisable to MOVE contents of "Users/~/Library/Mail/V2" in the Finder instead of from within Apple Mail "ON MY MAC" left pane?

Is it advisable to MOVE some folders/mailboxes within "Users/~/Library/Mail/V2" by drag and drop in the Finder instead of moving them from within the Apple Mail "ON MY MAC" left pane?
Any drawback or problem or danger about it? In case of doing it, should I do it with Apple Mail open or closed?

You may get an answer here at the Mountain Lion discussion, but I'd suggest Lion folks are more likely hanging out at the Lion discussion page:

A little more info would be helpful- when did this start, ever able to send in a timely manner, etc.

  • Syncing Apple mail folders between macs??

I would like to be able to sync the folders in the ON MY MAC section of Apple Mail on my MacBook with the Apple Mail on my iMac.
Is there a way to get iCloud to sync the changes made to these folders so they reflect new and deleted messages?

You must place the "On My Mac" mailboxes on the server for the mailboxes and messages within to be available via iCloud webmail access and with the Mail.app on each Mac.
Select and drag an "On My Mac" mailbox under the iCloud section in the Mail.app mailboxes drawer to copy the mailbox and messages within to the server.

I do see a heading for MobileMe and GoogleMail, but nothing for iCloud.
Your computer's OS is too old for iCloud, 10.7.2 is the minimum and you have something in the 10.6's (I would guess)
    or
You have a compatible computer but never set iCloud up.

  • After Leopard upgrade can't send mail in Apple Mail with dot mac account.

Just upgraded to Leopard and now I can't send mail through Apple Mail. Checked smtp and that's OK. How do I check what ports are open? That may be the problem. I looked at the Apple trouble shooting page and did everything there except the port check.
    Any other suggestions?

Fixed my own problem. I put in the SMTP address but didn't save. Once I saved it worked.

  • Apple Mail takes a very long time to send messages.

A few weeks ago, Apple Mail started to act up.
Even small email messages without images now take 30 seconds to send.
They sit forever in the outbox.
What can be the reason of this?

Window menu -> Activity menuitem will give you all the background processes of Mail, and should give you an idea what is hanging its processes.
Mail can especially get tied up if Spotlight or Time Machine are trying to redo their indices.

  • Time Machine Question (want to keep old back up and start a new one)

    Hello
I have a MacBook Pro that I back up using Time Machine to a Segate External Harddrive.  I have several weeks worth of back ups stored using Time Machine.  Then I needed to have my system wiped clean due to overheating.  I just got it back and I have been working to restore my system (application by application.... folder by folder, file by file) from the most recent Time Machine.
However I didn't put it all back - I kind of picked and choose what I reinstalled.
I would like to set my MacBook Pro back up with Time Machine BUT I really really do not want to overwrite the old backups.  In my ideal world I want to start a whole new set of backups. However I can't figure out how to do that.
I tried changing the name of the folders in Time Machine and that didn't work. I tried copying them, that didn't work either.  It keeps telling me "The operation can’t be completed because it isn’t supported."
Is there any way to start a whole new time machine back up using the same external hard drive?  This way I still have my old Time Machine Back ups should I need them (from my computer before we wiped it clean).
    Thanks!

That's usually a recipe for disaster.  You're likely to miss all sorts of things that way.  Plus, if you have any "complex" apps (typically, the ones that come with their own installers and put other files on your system), they won't work properly, if at all, unless you also copy those files.  Or reinstall them from the original discs.
Your best bet is to do a full system restore, then delete what you don't want.
I would like to set my MacBook Pro back up with Time Machine BUT I really really do not want to overwrite the old backups.
Time Machine won't necessarily do that.  But it will make a new full backup of the "new" drive (since it was erased, it's treated as a different drive).  If there's not enough room for it, it will start deleting old backups trying to make room for the new one.
(That doesn't happen if you do a full system restore, or use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to put your data back.)
You can avoid that by manually telling Time Machine to "associate" the new drive with the old backups, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  TM will then do an "incremental" backup, of just what's new or different from the last backup.
If you don't do that, you won't see the backups of the "old" drive normally, but you can via the procedure in #E3 of the same link.
In my ideal world I want to start a whole new set of backups. However I can't figure out how to do that.
If there's enough room on the backup disk, you don't need to.

Again, if there's room, you don't need to do that.  If there isn't, you can't, short of using a different disk.
But if there's room, and you want to keep the old backups indefinitely, you might be able to create a second partition, and start backing-up to it.  See #3 in Using Disk Utility.
