Apple.Mail.plist deleted accidentally

I deleted apple.mail.plist file from ~/Library/Preferences directory. If I open Mail.app all my mail is gone. Can I still resque my mails? Thanks!

Probably. Do you have a backup copy of that file? If so, just place a copy of the backup in its original location.

  • Mail wont launch at all. Deleted this: ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Mail wouldnt let me send outgoing mail claiming there to be an error whilst there was an outgoing connection. So I thought to completely reset the entire app and found a forum that told me to delete something >_> And so I deleted this ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and now nothing will launch. And well. Nothing is backed up. Im an idiot. ;___; I just want to go back to my chalk and slate. TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. Please help me.

    Hi Bill,
You could also try com.apple.helpviewer.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Have you noted whether this is system-wide or restricted to your user account? I'd create a test account (if you don't have another on your system) and try the help menus. If they're messed up over there, then fixing things in your user folder won't help. The only system resource I could find that seems remotely relevant is /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpdata.plist, but I'd be verrrry careful about messing around with stuff in your System folder.
    Hope that helps!

  • After i had my hard drive replaced, i've gone to get my old emails and am unable to find them on time machine. The file com.apple.mail.plist isn't there. HELP!

Pretty sure this will be some sort of user error, but i'm lost.
I had to have my hard drive replaced, so before taking it to the genius bar, i backed up using time machine. I'd had issues with trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner previously so had formatted the external drive before doing time machine. TM seemed to work fine and copied what looked to be everything. Once i'd got the new hard drive in and went to restore everything, when i looked for the file i need to get to apparently get my mails back (Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist) it's not there.
Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

    Hi
Since moving from HDD to SSD and Lion to ML I am getting loads of these errors in my System Log

The .plist files are almost always preferences. I believe "plist" is short for "property list". It contains a list of keys (configuration options) and settings for each key, similar in some respects to the way the Windows Registry works, except that there is a separate file for each set of settings, instead of a single registry file as in Windows. In this case it's a shared settings file for Mail, but I couldn't tell you anything more about the contents.
You were smart to back it up. Usually .plist files can be deleted without signicant loss, because they will be recreated automatically with default settings. But sometimes they contain important settings that may be hard to set up again, especially if you had help setting up your computer in the first place, or have lost important details that you'd need for setting up an app, such as Mail. But sometimes the settings are trivial, for example the position and size of windows, etc., and do not contain settings you'd care about, which may be in another .plist file or in some other kind of file/database.

  • Many com.apple.mail.plist files in Library directory

I have 1,779 com.apple.mail.plist files in my library directory, all of which are dated September 12, 2010 at seemingly random times all in the PM.
These files are supposed to contain information about Mail preferences and account, right?  Seems like way too many files.
    Can I delete them?
Why was I looking at them anyway, you ask?  Because I was trying to solve the problem of com.apple.quicklook.satellite errors in my log, went into the Library directory to delete the quicklook plist files and notices these mail plist files.
    So, can I delete these?

I would delete them. Only one should exist, and it is located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. To access that folder start with:
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • Restore E-Mails without com.apple.mail.plist

Hello - Somehow my Mac crashed and my com.apple.mail.plist is empty - and if I open Mail it asked me to create an account. (like first time starting).
I have a backup of all my emails ~/Mail folder but i dont have a backup of the com.apple.mail.plist - is there any change to restore my Emails without doing this whole add new account thing?
    Thanks

You should ask your ISP for your lost information about your account, create a new account with an empty mail folder. Then, quit Mail, exchange your empty ~/Mail by your backup folder and then reimport your mails.

  • Rogue video email shuts down Apple Mail, cannot delete

I received a video email from a friend that shuts down Apple Mail within a few seconds of opening. The delete button is grayed out and I am unable to delete. I deleted it from web-based mail, but it still opens with Apple Mail--then shuts down the application. I have shut down the computer and logged off repeatedly, to no avail. (I am also afraid my mailboxes have been emptied--apart from the rogue email.) Have I lost Apple Mail on this computer forever? Can anyone help?

  • Apple mail not deleting emails

I am on 10.6 and have tried deleting emails by either highlighting the email and hitting delete, or moving them to the trash, going to edit and emptying the mail trash. Sometimes this reduces the number of emails in Apple Mail, sometimes not. Most of the time it doesn't. No matter what I do, even though the email has disappeared from the inbox the number of emails in my inbox remains constant

Hi, is this a POP or IMAP acount?
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Reboot, then in Mail, highlight that Mailbox, then in Mail's Mailbox menu, choose Rebuild... any change?

  • Apple Mail 4.4 Automatically Deleting from ALL Mailboxes! Help?

All of a sudden I noticed my Apple mail is deleting any messages older than roughly sixty days -- not just in my INBOX, SENT box either, this is in ALL my email boxes, including the folders I've made that live under the "On The Mac" section of my mail.
This is VERY strange. Anyone else having this trouble? I can't have this happening as I really need that history! Help! Thanks!!

    Welcome to the discussions, Lesterj2.
A smart mailbox is like having a filter or a view of your messages - the messages remain with all the others (typically in your inbox) but the conditions on your smart box restict you to seeing the subset of messages that match the condition. There is never actually anything in the smart box - delete something that you see there and you are deleting the original.
Where is you inbox? If you are downloading messages to an inbox on your Mac then they should remain there until you remove them. If your inbox is on AOL, I don't know, not being an AOL user.

  • Apple Mail vs. Gmail IMAP disagreeing counts

A friend has two iMacs (10.6.5), iPad & iPhone (iOS 4.2) recently switched to gmail for his primary email service.
The problem is that not all the devices “see” the same Sent, Drafts and Trash mailbox.
Working with other IMAP services, I never see issues like this, so I know this is a gmail specific issue - there’s a disconnect between the way Gmail organizes it’s IMAP mailboxes vs. the way the Apple Mail does.
For instance, when you configure Apple Mail for a gmail IMAP account, it assumes your Sent mailbox will be called “Sent Messages”. And on the gmail web side, a Label always gets created called “Sent Messages”. My experience is that without any intervention, when you send email, it shows up in Apple Mail in the proper “Sent” mailbox, but in gmail it shows up in “Sent Messages”, NOT gmail’s Sent mailbox.
For some reason, with a gmail account, the old trick of Mailboxes > Use this Mailbox for doesn’t work because the options are grayed out.
So, how I’ve improved this situation is to open up PropertyListEditor and edit com.apple.mail.plist. There is a key called ‘MailAccounts’ under which is an “item” representing the Gmail account. Underneath, there’s an entry for ‘SentMessagesMailboxName’. I’ve tried changing this to both “Sent Mail” or “[Gmail]/Sent Mail” and both work in the sense that any email sent from Apple Mail ends up in gmail’s Sent mailbox, and NOT in “Sent Messages”
    Here’s where the mystery deepens.
In my friend’s situation, when I do this, when path is set to [Gmail]/Sent Mail, I see two Sent mailboxes
in Apple Mail, I see 886 messages in the Sent under ‘Mailboxes’, and 823 in ‘Sent Mail’ under GMAIL section
in gmail, the ‘Sent Mail’ mailbox has 651 items and there exists a “[Imap]/Sent Mail” mailbox which has 609 items
When I edit the plist and change the path with PropertyListEditor to just “Sent Mail”, Apple Mail only shows one Sent mailbox with 823 messages items, but is missing the message sent within the past couple days.
Any ideas how to make sense of this?

No real answer to your problem, but I can confirm the problem exists...I've been chasing it forever. Another issue (that is equally as perplexing) is that no matter how you configure deleted message behavior in Apple Mail, when you delete a message it NEVER shows up in the Gmail TRASH folder. If someone would just create a definitive guide for using Gmail and Apple Mail they could probably sell it.

  • Apple Mail Assertion Failure

    Hi,
My company uses Office 365 for hosted Exchange email. We have 1 user who uses Apple Mail on OSX 10.7 to connect to the server in Exchange mode (using EWS). This was working great until a few days ago where he has sporadic connection problems. Reproducable situation below:
    1) Select 100 emails in any given folder
    2) Drag/drop those emails into another folder to move them there
    3) They will start moving but it will fail at somepoint and give the message "Cannot execute move operation".
    4) After that message appears it is usually several minutes before he can try again or send any emails.
    5) Trying to send an email immediately after the error message results in the "Cannot send message using the server" dialog where you are prompted to select a different server to send the message. Choosing an SMTP server results in the message being sent but sometimes (and only sometimes) the message is resent a couple of hours later through the exchange system.
We are getting a million of the following assertion failure messages in the console:

We have tried deleting the account and making a new one. As well as removing the mailbox folder (~/Library/Mail/V2/EWS-*) and the Apple Mail plist file. We have also setup the email on a different Mac (also OSX 10.7) but we still get the same assertion failure message.
This user's email account works fine in Outlook on Windows and Mac (Outlook 2010 and 2011) and it also works fine through the online web portal. Outlook 2011 Mac uses EWS (the same protocol Apple Mail uses) and it's not throwing any errors and everything works properly so that is leading me to believe it's an issue with Apple Mail.
Perhaps related, perhaps not, but the user's iPhone and iPad have also stopped working properly with the account. They will sometimes connect but a lot of the time they give an error message about not being able to connect to the server. This leads us to believe it's an exchange server problem, but then why does it work in Outlook and the online portal without any problems? It's only the Apple products that are falling apart.

I ended up having to reproduce the problem in Outlook 2011 Mac before O365 support would help me. Apparently Apple Mail isn't one of the officially supported clients so they weren't going to figure it out for me. Once they ran out of ideas they just gave me the "Apple Mail is officially supported" excuse and stopped helping me.
Although we weren't initially having the problem in Outlook 2011 Mac it did start giving tons of errors during certain operations (with a -19907 error code) after a while. Not sure why it started doing that ... but it did. This was only happening with one of our user's accounts so it had to be something server-side that was the problem. I eventually got a support ticket in their system (despite being a P1 plan holder) so that they could call me. We did some Wireshark capturing to try to diagnose the problem but by that time the problem had fixed itself.

  • Move Apple mail 2.07 account directory to another location/partition

    Hi all,
Was bugged by few problems after the update to 10.4.6.
    As follows:
All my emails disappear after it. Knowing that i previous did some customising of moving to different folder, i try to import it in and everything is there under the folder Import. Solved on my first problem.
I have since drag all folders from Import to the main and deleted off the folder Import.
While i starting to add accounts into the new Mail 2.07, i faced another problem. I am unable to set the account directory for the account i have created. This is bugging me as i have all my emails on the other partition and it contains 2GB of all my important emails i need. though i have successfully imported them into Mail 2.07, i wish to move the mail to the other partition so i can have a easier time not needing to housekeep now and then since most of my emails have large attachments with them.
I tried accessing Andrew Pontious's helpfultiger tips after some searching within this discussion and found that his site is no longer functioning.
Have also tried the other method of adding a new account without the assistance by pressing "Option" when clicking the "+" icons and the Mail preference panel just hang on me without anything shown. Forcing me to do a force quit on Mail and try again and again. And still, after last night of countless tries, i still unable to progress any further.
    Help needed :
    1. Any ways to push my mail to other partition other than setting the account directory within the account setting to the other partition?
    2. If able to customise the default folder from /Library/Mail to another partition, that will be nicer.
    3. If no way to set the default account directory, possible to customise a folder which is located at the other partition and create a rule to move the mails into that folder?
Pardon me for this lengthy post as i have been bugged by few other problems other than this Mail and desperately needing help to get my Mail back in order to carry on working.
N.B: I have tested my iMac hardware, did a disk verification and permission repair and everything is doing fine.

I must be missing something here, because this is
starting to make little sense to me. In my previous
reply I did give you step-by-step instructions
to accomplish what you want. Have you tried it? Is
there something there you didn't understand? If
replacing the HOME/Library/Mail folder with an
alias doesn't work, I'm pretty sure it can be done
using Unix symbolic links instead, but I believe
Finder aliases are preferable here if they work (and
    I believe they do).
Why on Earth would someone prefer to play with more
involved hacks that only provide a partial solution
and that are more likely to cause problems?
Never doubted your suggestion and was gladful for it.
However, i tried and my mail didn't show up with those personal folders which i created to categorize the chunk of emails i got. Ended up i reverse the process and everything is back in Mail again.
One thought after last night of trying, com.apple.mail.plist.
Will try to see if i can edit the default location ~/Library/Mail to my preferred location on the other partition by means of editing the plist.
    Will update if any result.
And to all who have responded in this thread, sincerely thank all of you for the time and effort spent to help me out. Thank You!

  • HELP!! My Apple "MAIL" app. unexpectedly quits each time I open it.

My Apple "MAIL" app. unexpectedly quits each time I open it.
It will begin to load my mail, show the mailboxes and new e-mails and then all of a sudden quit.
I searched some of the Apple support and forums and have tried these things:
    1. I trashed the "com.apple.mail.plist" preference file in the pref. folder.
    2. I did an archieve install with Tiger OSX on my entire System Folder.
    3. I erased my user>library>"mail folder"
    4. I tried holding the shift key upon opening the program as suggested here but to no avail: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=479497&tstart=0
This has not resolved the problem. The program still quits every time I open it.

A few of the messages I deleted (the last 2 days) now say
"You need to take this account online in order to download it."
If this is the result of having deleted the *.emlx files manually, you're probably seeing this error message because there is still a reference to them in Envelope Index.
Is there anyway to tell Mail to re-download these
    mail files and reconnect them?
If they're still on the server, yes. Choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window to open the Account Info window -- type "Account Info" in the search field of Mail Help for more information on this feature. Now, choose the account that has the problem from the Account popup menu at the top of the window. Does Mail display there the messages that are missing? What type of account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?

  • Backup Apple Mail

    Hello!
Lately I have been going through quite some trouble while I was trying to set up rules for my 3 IMAP mail accounts in Mail.app.
I'm still not sure everything works as it's supposed to, so I'd like to create a full backup of all my emails. Does anyone know a good way of doing this, maybe even how to restore the backup after all ?
    Much appreciated, thanks!
PS: I have .Mac's "Backup" available, but I heard that it's not very good, is that true?

To backup all of your emails, just copy the folder /Users/~/Library/Mail to your backup destination.
You can later restore to the backup by copying the folder back into place.
If you want to reset Mail, you can delete /Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist – That will allow you to restore Mail to default settings while leaving the emails on your computer in place.
When you setup your accounts again with the same server and username, etc, Mail will automatically populate itself with the messages in the folder.
