Apple Mail - Preview Pane - No Preview

Ladies and Gentlemen:
Apple Mail developed a strange behavior.
Neither in the preview pane nor when you double click the mail the content is visible.
Why is this? How can it be repaired?
Thank you very much!
Kind regards
Dieter Zakel MD MA

  • Dropping a photo from iPhoto an Apple Mail stationary pane placeholder

With regard to Apple Mail and the stationary pane templates, why is that sometimes I can drop a picture in from iPhoto in the placeholder, and other times I cannot? Sometimes some photos will work and others won't. Other times no photos will work. And still other times all photos work. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to when it works and when it doesn't. What am I doing wrong?

Next time that happens check to see if you can drag the photo to the Desktop from iPhoto.  You can try repairing the permissions in the library via iPhoto as follows:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - apply option #1.

  • Mail: why are draft edits in preview pane not saved?

    Hi,
when viewing drafts in the preview pane, the preview pane accepts edits, which it doesn't when displaying received mails. However once I highlight another draft in my drafts folder, so that the preview pane shows something else, and then return to the supposedly edited draft, the edits are lost.
Am I just not getting it, or how do you save edits to drafts made in the preview pane. If editing in preview pane is not actually possible, why does it accept edits then?
Many thanks if someone can shed some light on this :-)

D/L Thunderbird but not set it up as active on line program. No new mail settings etc. Most of the old copied file folders were set as "read only" which I understand is the default of backups and causes problems on non rewrite DVD. Not a problem on ex - HD. I do not understand but it seems TB sets up an "APPS DATA" file that it separate from regular data files (but both are in Documents library). One on-line suggestion was to copy old "APPS DATA" into new TB structure ( a replacement) It did not work. Then tried replacing just parts with no better luck.
I only want to open the old files. No desire to going back to TB as working program. Use Chrome and gmail now.
Explorer2 film management program can preview the email in the old file but TB sees it as an empty file.

  • Preview pane

    i am using Mail.app 2.1.1
how can i make the preview pane on the right (as with entourage and outlook) ?

There is no way to do it by configuring Mail.
That said, there are some "hacks" that let you replace a couple resource files in Mail itself which will do this. For example Letterbox:
    http://www.scottkellam.com/os-x-software/letterbox-give-apple-mail-3-panes-like- outlook/
Note this isn't supported by Apple, so my suggestion is to back up the Mail application (copy it somewhere) before tweaking it.

  • Why does Apple Mail preview pane display only sender's first name?

Some, but not all, of the mail I receive shows only the sender's first name in the preview pane. I've checked the three areas others have mentioned as possible sources of the problem: 1.) Both first and last names appear for these senders in my Contacts. 2.) None of these senders appear with only first names in my Previous Recipients list. 3.) The full headers don't show first name only.
When I used Entourage, emails from the same senders never showed only first names in the preview pane.
Is this a bug in Apple Mail? Is there a workaround?

I came here looking for a similar answer. Some of my HTML messages show up just fine in Mail 3.5. Others, I get the plane text alternative or a bunch of raw HTML. With no answer in sight on the Discussion groups, I decided to look at the raw mail message of one of the offending emails.
Under the View menu I found a sub menu called Message then there are 6 choices beneath that:
    *Long Headers*
*Raw Source* (which is what I was looking for)
    +(and then below a separator I found a surprise!)+
    *Plain Text Alternative* (grayed out)
    *Previous Alternative* (grayed out)
    *Next Alternative* (available)
    *Best Alternative* (available)
Only the appropriate ones for the current message display format are available.
So low and behold selecting "next" or "best" changed my message into fully readable HTML format with pictures, formatting, etc.
I am assuming that something in the way that the multipart MIME message is assembled by some senders' systems does not sit well with Mail. I'm not going to bother figuring it out, but I'm sure that close examination of the raw message would give some clues.
Now if only I could figure out how to choose the message format based on the sender, I could eliminate having to change every message that comes in from that sender. Maybe AppleScript and a Mail Rule?

Topic area: Apple Mail.  Question:  How do I get the message preview window to display to the right of my list of email messages? i.e. to preview whatever message is currently highlighted in the center window list of messages?

At present there is no preference option available to move the preview
pane to right side of the mail window.
    Best.

  • In Mail.app body of e-mails is blank in preview pane

Using Mail in OS X 10.8.4 on an iMac. Everything working fine earlier but now Mail app is acting up, a little slow on response and the body of all emails is blank in the preview pane to the right. If I double click on the email itself it opens up fine. I have restarted several times and also shut down completely attempting to correct. Several times after restart the mail app seemed to be back to normal but as soon as I start clicking through messges I again have the problem. I've read through some posts that were several years old that talked about deleting the envelope index @ ~/library/mail/envelope index but I do not see this anywhere in Finder.
    Please help, thanks..

I am having the same problem too. I also downloaded TinkerTool but there is no such option to check under Applications tab.
Since TinkerTool says they only surface settings available in OS X, it seems that Apple removed that setting.
I disagree that this problem is "Solved".
Today this Mac problem seemed to be caused by selecting 5 messages and click-dragging them into a different folder.
Poof, reading panes became blank. Even when I double-click to open a message, the content is blank.
Restarting Mail fixes it ... until the next time.

    Hi AngieLynch,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing some unexpected behavior in Mail.
Before troubleshooting on your computer, I'd strongly recommend backing up your data to an external hard drive with Time Machine, if you haven't already. This article can help with setting up Time Machine:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Next, try creating a new user account on your computer. You can add your email account to Mail in the new user account. If Mail is more responsive in the new user account, then Mavericks is working fine and the behavior is caused by conflicts in your own Mail or user account.
These articles walk you through creating a new user and setting up Mail:
OS X Mountain Lion: Create a new user account (applies to Mavericks, too.)

  • Mail preview pane

    Hi,
Can someone tell me how to get the preview pane bar back please?
I'm using Mail 2.1.1 and lost the preview pane earlier today. Everything I'm reading online says there should be a bar with a circle on it under the list of emails, which can be clicked or dragged to restore the pane.
I haven't got this on my Mail window, all I can see is my list of email's disappearing off the bottom.
    Can anyone help please..??!
    Cheers,
    Dave
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    You’re welcome.
Yes, re-creating com.apple.mail.plist would be the next thing to try here -- maybe there is something wrong with the setting that determines where the bar should appear. Proceed as follows:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    5. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Messages in MAIL appear BLANK in preview pane

    Hello,
This started happening to me 2 weeks ago.
Mail functions properly and then it starts not displaying messages in the preview pane.
I see the message in the left column (subject, sender).
I see the header (from, to, etc)
    But the body is blank.
Double clicking (opening the message) allows me to see the message.
Restarting MAIL makes it ok, but not for long.
I have to perform a full reboot of the system.
This is getting extremely annoying, as I use my Mac for work and can't afford to reboot all the time.
Up to now I've tried :
    - Rebooting
    - Rebuilding
Then I've looked around the posts on this forum and I've tried a few things that didn't work, such as :
    - Deleting all saved contact information
    - Resetting my CONTACT database
    - Trying to find and "index" file in library/mail/ (couldn't find it, I only have a folder called v2)
So the problem is still there
    Please help !

In mavericks mail, I can no longer collapse the preview pane. I don't want to acknowledge receipt of certain spam messages so changing the size of the window isn't the answer because they are no longer unread.

Ah yes school boy error there out of frustration and discontent..
My issue is with music/apps/films etc not downloading from iTunes / App Store.
They initially fail and message is displayed stating unable to download / purchase at this time, yet if I retry it says I've already purchased (?) or alternatively I go to the purchased section and there they are waiting with the cloud symbol..
However some items get frozen in the download window and cannot be retried or deleted. Message appears stating to tap to retry, but even if you stole every bath and sink in the uk you'd still not have enough taps.
I post here as the iTunes guys are useless in there 'help' and have only advised posting here or phoning apple, at my expense, to explain a problem that could be rectified by forwarding my original email to a techie. However the tech team apparently don't have an email address as they're from ye olde Middle Ages..!
    Anyways I digress.
So I tried sync to pc, but instead of showing the file as ready to listen/use/view, the iCloud symbol shows and I'm back to square one as the item is unable to download..
At frustration station waiting for a train from pain...
All my software is up to date, and had all worked fine prior to the last big iOS update that resulted in all the changes in display and dismay.
    Answers in a postcard :-)
    Much love

How do I not display the preview pane in mail until I open it with a double click? Some mail I do not wish to open-just delete it. New macbook pro with LION OS

Just drag the divider line between the preview pane and the message list all the way to the edge so the preview is completely closed. Selected messages will open in a new window with a double-click or the return key.

  • Hide/Disable preview pane in Mail

Previously one could double-click the border seperating the preview pane from the list of messages to hide the preview pane.
In the Mail application in Mavericks this border is no longer visible. How can I hide the preview pane in Mail on Mavericks?

    Hi,
If you switch to Classic View in Mail Prefs, drag the Horizontal Splitter down to the bottom of the screen then switch back to Modern View, the Preview pane will be gone from both views.
