Apple Mail removed bounce functionality?

I upgraded to Lion, and I cannot find the "bounce" functionality in Apple's Main application.  I regularly use this to reduce future occurences of SPAM.  Is it possible it has removed from the application?

I think you misread that.
a)
"The Bounce feature may not work with some email service providers, and may actually indicate to the originator that your email address is valid."
it's talking about real spam - not mistaken emails. Yes, spammers might be able to tell it's a fake bounce thus validating your email,
and b)
"Use Mail's built-in Junk filtering, which can both be set automatically, or be set to learn as you receive mail messages. For more information, see Mac 101: Mail.
If you use MobileMe, you can use an email alias. This feature can allow you to purchase items online with an additional email address that protects you from receiving unsolicited mail messages. See MobileMe: About email aliases."
Neither of these discuss people who email you thinking you are someone else. If polite emails don't work, and I don't want to be rude, I still want to bounce the messages. To most people a bounced message is a sure sign they typed the email address incorrectly.
Email aliases are especially dumb because to do the job as advertised you would have to create an alias, use it, and destroy it when its purpose is accomplished. When you free up an alias, it must be free for anyone else to use (or else Apple would quickly run out of aliases). SO - you could possibly get other people's email in the future. Or they yours. And talk about hassle... I'd rather just deal with the junk mail with a filter.

    Hi Carlo,
My Mail seems to work now.
I should have done a screen capture to show you something.
When I was about to send the message in Mail, a notice came up:
    It had 2 mail accounts:
    1. Mail
    2. my new e-mail address
I think I pressed  Mail (if I remember).
However, when I just sent another test message, there was no window warning coming up.
Also, the "new Mail account" has nothing in it like the one that I deleted.
The one that I deleted had lots of material (messsage, sent message, saved messages etc...) but nothing critical.
    I can live with that.
The critical point will be when I go to a site and when I want to send a messafge, my Apple Mail account window opens.
So far, your solution has worked even if the second part of your instructions could not be followed.
    Thanks again,
    Stacey

  • HT201320 Does my email service provider have to provide the ability for me to create an IMAP email account in order for me to create Sub-folders within Apple Mail?

Hi, Apple Mail provides a function to create sub-folders within my mailbox so that I can group emails of similar subjects or from the same sender. My service provider only provides POP email protocol and the New Folder button does not appear in my Apple Mail account for that service provider. Icloud provides the opportunity for the iPad user to select between POP and IMAP. I can select IMAP and the New Folder button appears allowing me to create sub-folders within the icloud email account. Does this mean I cannot create sub-folders in my email account unless my service provider provides customers with the option of creating an IMAP email account?
This appears to be a problem for quite a few Apple Mail users, but service providers appear reticent to provide a response other than 'use Microsoft Exchange / Hotmail, Google GMail, or some other third party email service provider'. This is why I have chosen icloud as my email service provider. It is Apple and therefore Apple supports it. I have been a Telstra customer for over 15 years and they informed me today, strongly, that they support their own products and services, not Apple products, even though Telstra sell them. When I asked the Telstra Customer Support Manager whether they support Telstra customers, I was informed 'no, because the Telstra customer is not a Telstra product or service'. I have since cancelled my Telstra email account and am in the process of cancelling all of my Telstra services.

Yes. That is what it means. You need an IMAP account in order to create sub folders on the iPad.

  • Not all Google imap messages synching with my Apple mail

I've been using my MBP's Apple mail to access my Google imap mail for 3 or 4 years.  No problems until recently when, in Apple mail, I did searches for old e-mail messages and couldn't find them, but when I accessed a web browser to access my Google imap mail, my searches there were successful in finding the old e-mail messages.  My inference: not all of my Google imap mail messages are synching over to my MBP's Apple mail.
Any suggestions on what I might do to guarantee that my Google imap mail messages  synch over to my MBP's Apple mail?

I figured out a solution and it works.  Using a browser to access my Google mail, I marked as "unread" all mail for the previous 12 months.  As a result, my Apple mail uploaded/read of those e-mails again.  A pleasant surprise: in my Apple mail, these re-uploaded/read e-mails did not show up marked as new.  In my Apple mail now, I can find those previously missing old e-mails when I new search for them.  Caution: it took a long time (days) for the imap operations to do all of its behind-the-scenes tasks, like setting flags or caching attachments or doing something with directories, and so forth; however, all of this was invisible and my Apple mail was fully functional throughout.

  • Apple Mail accounts defaulting to IMAP instead of POP

My ISP (Cox) tells me they support both IMAP and POP.  With my old eMac (PPC 10.5.8), Apple Mail was working fine with POP.  However, when I set up my new Mac Mini (10.10.3), the account setup defaults to IMAP and doesn't allow me to change this to POP.  I was involved in this discussion :
OS X 10.10.3 Apple Mail: 'Remove copy from server after retrieving a message' is no longer an option?
However, unlike the OP, in my case after pressing the "Create" button, no second display came up, i.e. Yosemite automatically configured the account as IMAP and that was that.
Anyone have any ideas how I can either edit the new accounts or add a new account so that it uses POP instead of IMAP in Apple Mail?

You may have to use Add Other Account from the bottom of the email provider list in Internet Accounts.
So, if this doesn't work for the listed providers, try it with Add Other Account.
When you get to the screen where you put in the email address and password, hold down the Option key and the Create button will change to Next. Press that and you can manually configure the account.

  • How can I remove an "automatic" reply-to function on Apple Mail?

    Hi,
I run three different e-mail accounts off of Apple Mail. Two are for business, and one is personal. I am not sure when/how this occurred, but for any e-mail I send the recipient gets a "reply-to" my personal account.
I have tried various methods to remove this, even if I manually input a different reply-to address, or remove the window all together, all my recipients get a reply-to my personal e-mail address. I did not realize this was happening for a very long time, as only my recipients saw the reply-to address. I am assuming I inadvertently did something with a script, automater, etc.
If anybody knows why this is happening, or how I can stop it - I would be very grateful.
    Thanks

When in Mail you select New Message you get a drop down menu, just above the message pane, where you select what account the email is to be sent from.

  • Removing Mail folders from "On My Mac" section Apple Mail 5.3 0n 10.7.5

    Hello,
I typically move read mail out of my Inbox to various folders I have created on the "On My Mac" section of the side in Apple Mail 5.3 running on 10.7.5.
I have folders like these dating back to 2009!!!
I recently decided that after archiving the messages as PDFs, I could reduce my Library > Mail folder size.
I deleted 5 folders total.  They no longer appear in the "On My Mac" section even after restarting the computer.
I happened to take a look at my Users/xxx/Library/Mail folder and noticed that three of the five folders I deleted are still listed in the Mail folder but now report a size of 0 bytes.  (If it makes a difference, my folders in the On My Mac section are nested but only two layers deep at most)
Did I make an error at some point when deleting the mailboxes that resulted in three of them still appearing in the Mail folder as 0 bytes???
Is it safe to manually delete the three .mbox files in the Mail folder that no longer appear in the sidebar and report a size of 0 bytes??
    Thanks
    John

    Hey Kappy,
I don't think I communicated this properly in my original post.
The 5 mailboxes I deleted from the "On My Mac" section of the sidebar where in fact deleted by Ctrl-clicking each one and selecting Delete.
After closing Mail, I took a look in the Mail folder an found that 2 of the 5 were in fact totally gone but the remaining three are still listed but now empty.
I then opened and closed Mail a couple of times and restarted my computer once and they were still present.
After you last message, I moved the 3 empty .mbox files out of the Mail folder to a temp location and since then after several times opening and closing Mail and 2 computer restarts they have NOT returned and Mail seem to continue to function and all of the other mailboxes in the On My Mac section are still present and populated.
I was just curious why after deleting 5 mailboxes, only two were completely removed and the other three were only emptied.
Thanks for you assistance by the way . . .
    John

  • How to remove thousands of duplicate emails in Apple Mail?

    Hi everybody,
I know there are a couple of discussions on the web already about this issue, but I cannot find one that clearly answers my question or solves my problem.
I'm working on Lion with Mail version 5.1 and I have a Gmail-account. I have been messing around a bit with IMAP and POP to re-collect all my Gmail-mails into Apple Mail, but now I see that almost every email has 1 to 5 or even more duplicates.
I've tried Andreas Amann's "Remove Duplicates" script, but whatever Mailbox I check, it doesn't work with Lion (yet). I get this error:
There is another script I tried, the one from this page: http://hints.macworld.com/comment.php?mode=view&cid=115625
It just makes my computer freak out, so not OK.
    A third script I found here: http://jollyroger.kicks-***.org/software/
I downloaded the "RemoveDuplicateMessages-Mail.zip"-file and installed it. It does say it finds and relocates duplicate mails from the Mailbox that is selected in Mail:
It relocates all the duplicates to a folder on my Desktop, called "Remove Duplicate Messages". I do find them there, but the mails in the selected Mailbox in Mail.app still show their duplicates! Even when I throw the files from the new folder on Desktop in the Trash and empty it, nothing changes. Not even after restarting Mail. Or my Mac.
So I'm still stuck with thousands of duplicates. Any help on this one?
    Thanks a lot,
    Alexander

I have found a very satisfactory solution to eliminating my duplicates in Apple Mail, which is to stop using it and switch to Thunderbird.
There's lots that I like better in Apple Mail, but Thunderbird is light-years more flexible in managing your email than is Apple Mail, because Thunderbird is an open platform with excellent Add-ons available, which include the nifty Remove Duplicate Messages: http://bit.ly/tbird-dups. It is stupid that Apple Mail hides duplicate messages in the background & won't allow users to search and destroy them. Frustrating!
As a prologue to that, you need the TB import export Add-on: http://bit.ly/tbirdimportexport
Managing my mail locally on my Mac was a huge project for me, involving integrating tens of thousands of emails. Mail was  from gmail, yahoo, and many years of Outlook PST files.
Now that the project is complete, I'm very happy with Thunderbird to manage my email archives. Though I actually would prefer the Lion Apple Mail interface for day to day use, it just isn't flexible enough.

  • "Send mail as" function in Apple Mail?

    Hi all,
Does anyone know if Apple Mail has a "send mail as" function? Gmail has this so that you can sent up your gmail account to "send mail as" a different address than your gmail account. (This is great for cases like if you have a university alumni email address that is actually an alias that just forwards mail to another address -- if you set it up to forward to a gmail account, you can then set the gmail account to "send mail as" that address -- so when people receive mail from you, it looks like it was sent from [email protected] instead of [email protected] or whatever.)
Anyway, I use gmail but I use my Apple Mail client to check it (using the POP feature), and the "send mail as" function on gmail only works if you sent mail through the web-based gmail. Does anyone know if there's a way to set this up in Apple Mail so that it will say the message is from my alias address intead of my gmail address?
    Thanks!!

    Hello,
Back in December, in another Topic, it was explained to you how to search Mail Help to answer this very question. I just tested that method of managing alias addresses, other than those for a .mac, with my Gmail account, and it works.
Search Mail Help with the search argument of "Using email aliases in Mail". You can also search in Support with the same search argument, and find the same article. In both cases, there exhibits to make it clearer that describing only with text, here.
    Did you try this, previously?

  • Can I make a fake "Bounce" in Apple Mail?

Because Apple no longer supports "Bounce" in Apple Mail, how can I send a fake bounce message, so that certain people who refuse to stop sending emails will think my address has changed and stop sending? HELP, please.

If it's spam you're getting, not messages for which you know the authentic origin, this won't work. The "from" addresses in spam are always faked/spoofed, or sent from some hapless user whose computer has been enslaved by a botnet. All bouncing will do is confuse this poor person, who really isn't responsible for the spam.
And if by some unlikely chance the spammer used an authentic return address, all you're accomplishing is letting them know you've received their spam.
