Apple Mail, Safari and System Preferences "unexpectedly quits"

Can any one shed light on why the following is happening and if so give solutions:- Usually my i mac opens with Safari with no problems; since 4th March Safari opens and within seconds it quits and up comes the report window.
I click on Apple mail it opens and stays open until I request it to do anything, then it too unexpectedly quits, followed by the report window.
If I use Entourage to access my emails it stays open but will not allow me to move emails or delete in the account folder.
Even when I go into System Preferences it opens but will "unexpectedly quit" when I make certain requests.
I am now using Firefox which is fine and I am accessing emails successfully via the mac web page. Any ideas welcome, thanks.Annie

With such a wide range of problems you might suspect permissions problems although some people never restart they Macs (don't need to very often). If you've restart with no luck, I'd repair permissions by using Disk Utility and see if anything improves. If not then you could reinstall the 10.5.2 system update.
It wouldn't hurt to download the full combo update from Apple and run it again on your system, then repair permissions with Disk Utility.

    Hello, try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • System Preferences unexpectedly quit

Can anyone please help an Apple Mac beginner?
We have a Power Mac G4 at the school at which I work, for which no-one knew the administrator password. Because it logged on automatically, I was able to create a second administrative account which allowed me to access the Installer on the supplied CD. I went to Reset Password, clicked on the hard drive icon and up came the list of users. I chose the original admin user and changed the password, saved and logged off.
I still cannot log on as this user, even with the new password.
Also, if I now log on as the second admin user, some things have changed. Firstly, when I go to System Preferences and click Accounts, I get the message, System Preferences has unexpectedly quit. Secondly, if I try the Reset Password thingy again, this time when I click on the hard drive, it says there are no users, including the new admin user I am logged on as!
    Any suggestions, please?

Thanks, but it's really not that much of an issue to do an archive & install. I can use the preferences. It gives me the message only after I quit the system prefs.
I repaired permissions before and after the last update, I remember. Dragged plist to trash and restarted. Ran Macjanitor and YASU.....
Has not prevented me from doing anything, so until it does, I'll live with it.
    Thanks for helping.

  • Mail app and System Preferences--Internet Accounts keeps crashing

I can't figure out how to stop mail from crashing and I am running OS X Yosemite.  Some people say that you can remove the internet account, but when I go to system preferences, It always crashes the internet accounts section.  I also can' find the com.apple.mail plist in library.  Does anyone know how to fix this?
    -Guy

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • System Preferences unexpectedly quits

    G'day people
I have my iMac set-up to display both English and Greek through the "International" settings in System Preferences(SP). The order it's is in Greek then British English.
I removed British English from the list as I wanted the whole operating environment to be in Greek. However, in addition to removing it making no difference and everything is still in English (except for date and time), when I try and go back into SP I get the unexpected quits pop-up and I can't figure out how to fix it.
I tried restoring the SP icon (and its package contents) from a time machine backup but that made no difference. Has anybody else had this problem?
Here is a paste of the report in case it means something to someone!
    Please help....
    Thanks

  • Safari and System Preferences crashing

I just received my MacBook Pro a couple days ago. I have been trying to change my desktop picture but when I click on "Desktop & Screen Saver" I get a message that System Preferences has closed down unexpectedly. This error was happening about 9 out of 10 times until tonight. Now, it has simply locks up every time I try to open it.
In addition, safari gives me the same message and closes down frequently when I open a browser window. It took me three tries to get to this forum.
The OS also crashed last night when I tried to click over to the widgets.
Any suggestions? I tried repairing disk permissions and repairing the disk but this did not help.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Search before you post. There is a fix for the Desktop/Screensaver problem already detailed in these forums (it involves deleteing a preference file).

  • Mail, Safari and other Applications Quit Unexpectedly

    Hello,
First it was Safari that would quit ever now and then. Then all of a sudden Mail and my Hammerfall DSP mixer app is quitting. I am on Tiger and I don't know why this is happening. Maybe it was one of the Mac Osx updates?
I did a search here and I tried emptying out the cach. I also dumped some of those unnecessary fonts. Problem is still here.
Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?
Right now it is 3 apps that "Quit Unexpectedly". Mail, Safari and Hammerfall DSP Mixer ( for my sound card to run ).
    Help is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Johnny

Check Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to
    launch for troubleshooting steps.
Many of those things like fonts don't really apply to me since I swapped out the hard drive and reinstalled Tiger.
I did do the Apple Hardware Test and it found bad Ram in slot 2. I proceeded to take out the Ram in slot 2. The problem is still alive and kicking.
One new thing I noticed is when in Safari it will crash as I start to type in the Google search window. It doesn't crash if I type in the top address bar. Only when I type inside the window. It's a weird thing. I kept re-launching and as soon as I would type 1 letter into the search window of Google it would crash.
Mail won't even open for peek. Same with all the other apps.
I spoke with a Apple Tech and he said it might be the Logic board!
    Thanks,
    Johnnny

  • Mail, safari, and dashboard immediately quit unexpectedly

After using software update last week to download itunes 7, the latest quicktime and the latest security update, now mail, safari, and dashboard all quit immediately after opening them. I've moved mail and safari plist and cookies plist to the trash, created a new test account, and still the problems persist. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
    Todd

It looks like the update wasn't installed properly.
Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the update that appears to not have been installed properly. You may also need to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you're using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for Intel
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.

  • System Preferences "Must Quit and Reopen" No "Open in 32-bit" Option to Uncheck

Everything worked fine when I had 10.7. But I still updated to 10.8 when it came out. I spent quite a while trying to figure out why I couldn't use many of the preferences in the system preferences. I kept getting the message: "To use the ____ preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen." Quitting and reopenning sends me on an infinite loop.
I've scowered the support communities and found no help. The communities kept saying I should go to the System Preferences file in Applications, go to Get Info, and uncheck a box that says "Open in 32-bit Mode." Unfortunately, I have never had that box. Today I updated to 10.8.4, hoping that this would finally get fixed. It was not.
Is there any solution I'm missing?

    Just got same problem.
#1. There is no Box, under Label or anywher to uncheck or check.
#2. The device I want to use does not have an update driver. What I really need if for the Box to check or uncheck which should be there according to Apple Help.
#3. I tried this, resetting the whole computer's kernal extension by using a Terminal command (although I don't like doing that). It didn't work. sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386
So I reset it to: sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
But emphasize, again, I don't like doing SUDO commands in Terminal.
    So...Anything else to try?
Thanks for any info that might help.

  • System preferences must quit and reopen 32-bit unchecked

    Hello,
Whenever i try to open Network, users&groups... i get this message "To use the “name of pane” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."
I've already checked that 32-bit mode is unchecked I've tried repairing disk permissions with no luck so far.

    15-inch, Late 2011
Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance. You can skip this step if you don't care about the data that hasn't been backed up.
Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

When attempting to set up iCloud on my iMac I receive the following error message "To use the 'iCloud' preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."
I have tried quitting, even re-booting etc but still receive this message. Any ideas?

This is a shot in the dark, but try this:
log-in to your iCloud account with your Apple ID
    change your password
ensure your billing information is up-to-date
attempt to re-enable your Keychain (again)

  • To use the "Users & Groups" preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.

When I try to access some of the system preferences in Mavericks I get an error pane that states "To use the “Users & Groups” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."
Has anybody had this problem and if so what is the fix?

Usually happens if you opened one that was 32-bit. Then, you need to revert back to 64-bit.

  • System preferences automatic 'quit' and re-open'.

I cannot get System preferences to quit and reopen to allow for 32-bit compatability mode to work.

Somehow the .plist for the auto backup had its' permissions changed. No idea how, since I haven't fooled with it or with any Time Machine third party apps.
For future reference, you probably didn't need to do a restore. A "full reset" of Time Machine probably would have done it. See #A4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Either way, Repair Permissions noticed a problem and fixed it. My problem is resolved. Thanks so much!
    For bonus points:
When I did a restore, to my pleasure, I surprisingly found that it had included all my configs and even my wallpaper. I thought it only backed up data.
No, Time Machine backs-up your entire system: OSX, apps, configuration, users, preferences, etc. (unless you exclude things).
If I exclude the Library folders, will all these settings not be backed up
Correct. In most cases, it's a bad idea to exclude much of anything. See #11 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • HT201342 I cannot find any place to "Go to Mail Preferences".  I have tried looking under both "Mail" and "System Preferences" and there is nothing there entitled "Mail Preferences".  Where is that button located?

The instructions say "Go to Mail Preferences."
I cannot find any place called "Mail Preferences".  I have tried looking under both "Mail" and "System Preferences" and there is nothing there entitled "Mail Preferences". Under "Preferences" there is no subheading as described in the iCloud instructions.  Where is that "Mail Preferences" button located?

Open Mail, go to the 'Mail' menu, select Preferences.

  • Mail and system preferences keep crashing

I just bought this new computer. I migrated my old computer (MacBook Pro (mid-2009) with OS 10.6.8).
Now I"m having problems with Mail and System Preferences crashing (this was also happening some between iCal and Mail on the old computer).
Any ideas on how to fix?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
