Apple Mail Settings

Yesterday, my ISP (cox) took POP mail down for maintenance. I was out of business for sending/receiving mail via Apple Mail. The ISP maintenance is finished, however, I'm still unable to get/send mail using Apple Mail client. I haven't changed anything but when Apple Mail tries to connect to the ISP server, I get a spinning ball and an automatic disconnect. I'm only able to get to mail using the ISP web mail. After checking with the ISP they say the port setting (25) appearing in my Mail setup is blocked and to to contact my computer manufacturer for the correct port. Anyone have any info on the correct port setting I should be using with a Toshiba cable modem? Thanks.

Hello Bruce.
> After checking with the ISP they say the port setting (25) appearing in my Mail setup is blocked and to to contact my computer manufacturer for the correct port.
This tech person with Cox that told you this is misinformed or doesn't have a clue.
A computer manufacturer doesn't block Port 25. Your ISP is responsible for blocking Port 25 which is done by most ISPs for SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP and is related to sending messages only, not receiving.
If this email account and SMTP server is provided by Cox, most ISPs do not block Port 25 for their SMTP server.
If your Mac is connected direct to the cable modem (no router in between), try resetting the modem.
Shut down your Mac and then unplug the modem from the electrical outlet. Wait 5 minutes and then plug the modem back in allowing it to completely reset and then start up your Mac.

  • Save and restore Apple Mail settings (Mail version 7.3x)

Can anyone assist with hints as to how to save/restore the GUI and other individual settings in Apple Mail (Version 7.3, Build 1878.2)?
In earlier mail version this could easily be done by simply saving & restoring the "apple.mail.pst" file. Thanks.

    Greetings,
I don't think you would have to use Time Machine at all for this; that would only complicate things. Instead try this:
    Quit Mail if it's running.
Go to Home/Library/Mail and remove your IMAP mailbox. and any Envelope Index file.
Restart Mail and wait for the index to rebuild, and with any luck it should download your email again, but only once. If so, then your problem would appear to be solved.

  • Apple Mail settings to avoid re-download

Hi, I've seen others having the same issue but I can't seem to find the solution. Apple Mail keeps re-downloading all Gmail messages, even those that I've already deleted. If I go to the preferences/advance, it is simply not clear to me which option to choose. What I would like is to have a syncronized, up-to date view at all times. If I delete something here, I would like it to be deleted from the server as well.
    Thank you in advance!

    Spargha
I have also tested syncronizing the gmail folders and it seems that there's some kind of a time limit going on. I deleted like 200 e-mails from the "all mail" folder and just before I wanted to syncronize, it did automatically and downloaded all my deleted e-mails again. Is this a setting that can be changed?
Let's say I would like to deleted something I sent, for good. I am in the Mailboxes sent folder, I delete it there, than I go to the On My Mac sent folder, delete it there, then I go to the Gmail sent folder delete and syncronize? This sounds way too confusing, so I must be doing something wrong. Thanks in advance for enlightening me!
Before doing anything else, go to the GMail website and open up settings. Go to the Manage Labels tab. There are 2 sections here. First in the bottom section, this is for local gmail mailboxes. Select all of those unless you created any for a specific purpose and delete them.
Second, in the top section, check only the mailboxes you want to show in IMAP. Check to show Sent Messages & Trash. If you use gmail's junk filtering, then show it in IMAP also. Do not check to show any others unless you need them.
The all mail folders show messages no matter which folder you're in. In gmail, the default action is deleting a message from Inbox goes to deleted message folder. Deleting again goes to trash. Deleting again finally deletes the message. So, select the messages and delete 3 times.
You can make settings at the website to change the behavior. Whatever you do in the Mail application duplicates at the gmail site.
Indeed I have the on the Mail sidebar: mailboxes, Gmail and a 3rd one, On My Mac. I also have deleted, junk and sent folder. Which means I now have althogether 3 sent folders 2 junks and 3 trash if I count those under the gmail one (which is the least logic to me how it works with the "all mail" folder but that's another story). How will I know which is the  "primary"?
On My Mac is for local mailboxes you create. They have nothing to do with your accounts. If you put the cursor over it, you can hide all of it's contents so it won't confuse and repeat to show all under it. That way you can see what is actually in it.
Any mailboxes that appear in the sidebar and not under the Mail's main mailboxes or under the IMAP folders are local mailboxes that have been removed from the main (probably from maping imap to main mailboxes). Check for messages and save any you need and delete those mailboxes.
For any mailbox still appearing under the IMAP folder for that account, follow my first post and sync those mailboxes correctly to the main mailboxes. They should be moved from the IMAP folder when done correctly.
If you have local mailboxes already with messages, it will probably move those out of the main and to the sidebar. You can move the messages and delete those mailboxes.
FYI, once you map an imap mailbox to the main and you uncheck to store messages on the server, it will put the imap mailbox for that account back under the IMAP Account in the sidebar and again create a local mailbox for that account when you use it.

  • How can I change from gmail in apple mail settings?  Gmail is greyed out.

My internet mail provider is changing away from a google platform.  I need to change incoming and outgoing settings.  Gmail is greyed out.  If I delete the account and add it back, it still finds it on google an automatically enters the settings.  I need to change those settings and can't over ride the automatic entry.  Suggestions?

Doesn't make since. Who is the new provider? Were their any settings for converting between gmail and the new provider where the new address is forwarded to or included in gmail's settings? Seems somehow the old gmail account and the new account are connected somehow.
When you add a new account, hold the option key down before hitting continue after entering info on the first screen. You will get other options for account types to create.
In mail preferences, Accounts, check the advanced tab of the account and see if the first box for Automatically Detect and Maintain Account Settings is checked. If so, uncheck it.

  • Apple mail not working after upgrading to maverics

I installed maverics on my mac a couple months ago. I noticed that all of my accounts in apple mail  have not worked properly since. first of all, i cant tell if mail is retrieving my email anymore. there used to be a spiral next to the account letting me know that it was checking and now there is no indicator that it is working or not. many times my mail is delayed hours as I can see from the time that mail gets my email vs when my gmail or other account actually gets it.
sometimes apple mail says that the accounts are not connected to the internet but my wifi is fine. after trouble shooting the network settings i can get it to work but what a pain. Is there a way to reset my apple mail settings or my network settings to make apple mail work like it did before maverics? Please help. My mac info is below:

  • How do I reset Apple Mail to Factory Settings?

How do I reset Apple Mail to factory settings? I had 7 emails accounts on there and was about to add my school email address. It wasn't going through though, so I went to the school's IT department to ask them to do it. Unfortunately, the IT guy couldn't fix the school email and worse, now ALL my emails accounts won't go online. They all have exclamation points to their right, and are constantly asking for passwords. No matter how many times I put in the right password, it still keeps asking for it. I tried fixing it from Mail Preferences and System Preferences but nothing works. It keeps saying Connection Error. I don't know what the IT guy tweaked but it messed up everything.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

I think it's trying to open it in a gMail eMail & is losing your gMail password that it needs log into gMail, but not 100% positive.
Have you tried Right clicking or Control+click on the eMail link & choose Copy? Works on some, not others.

  • Apple Mail losing mail settings after closing the application

    Hi!
I have been using apple mail for the last 18 months with 5 accounts using IMAP, however when upgraded to Leopard 10.5.7 every time I enter the account details of the accounts they work find etc...
However when I close Mail and load it again all of the accounts are gone except for my me.com account. My accounts are fine on my iPhone any ideas?
    Thanks!

Sounds like a problem with the Property List file which stores the details of your email accounts and settings.
Open Finder and navigate to folder ~/Library/Preferences (the ~ denotes your home folder).
Drag the file com.apple.Mail.plist to the desktop
    Launch Mail
Re-enter your email account details, close Mail and then Launch it again to check that your account details have been "remembered".
If it now appears OK you can trash the com.apple.Mail.plist file you moved to the desktop because Mail will have created a new version in your folder ~/Library/Preferences.

  • I get "mail server does not recognize your Apple ID and password" when I try to share a picture via email in iPhoto.  My iCloud email works ok otherwise.  I have check all mail settings for ID and password.

I get "mail server does not recognize your Apple ID and password" when I try to share a picture via email in iPhoto.  My iCloud email works ok otherwise.  I have checked all mail settings for ID and password.

In the iPhoto preferences ==> accounts delete the account and re-enter it - sometimes that resolves this
Or IMHO the best long term solution is to set Apple Mail as the iPhoto e-mail client in the iPhoto preferences and use it - it has a number of advatages and has fewer problems

  • Until yesterday I was getting mail through my gmail acount on Apple Mail.. Today I am unable to recieve any mail No settings have been changed, using valid password etc. Any thoughts?

Until yesterday I was getting mail through my gmail acount on Apple Mail. I am now not getting any email. No settings have been changed, using a valid password. Any thoughts?

I found the following advice at: http://kb.mediatemple.net/questions/230/Common+issues+with+Apple+Mail#gs/not-rec eiving-email
    Not receiving email
Once in a while, your Mail.app (sometimes referred to as "Apple Mail" or "Mac Mail"), stops receiving new mail. You may be able to verify that you are getting new mail via webmail, another email client or computer, or even via a mobile phone. When this happens, the fix is extraordinarily easy!
Here's how: From inside the Mail.app, click the Mailbox menu (see Figure 1):
Choose "take all accounts offline", and wait 10 seconds.
    Choose "take all accounts online".
Figure 1: Follow these steps to refresh your Mail application.
You should begin seeing your new mail flow into your inbox.
    It worked!

  • Apple Mail changes settings after connecting to a GoDaddy server.

I have set up an account in Apple Mail to connect with an email account on a GoDaddy dedicated server. When I set up the account as an IMAP account everything works perfectly for the first connection to the server.
Immediately after the first connection to the server, I can no longer connect to the server via that Apple Mail account. Furthermore the settings in the account have changed. The incoming port is now 143 instead of 993 and the authentication is MD% instead of password.
GoDaddy insists this is a problem with Apple Mail, though I don't have this problem with any of the other email accounts I have set up in Apple Mail that connect with other servers.
My suspicion is that there is something about the way GoDaddy's server is handling SSL that causes Apple Mail to think that SSL is not working and reset the incoming port to 143, which is what it should be if SSL were not being used.
Note, that the only way I can connect with the GoDaddy server is to delete the account and create a new one with the correct settings. Changing the settings in the altered account does not work.
    Thanks,

Try going to Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Advanced and deselecting Automatically detect and maintain account settings. You will need to do this for each account.

  • Apple Mail (7.3, OSX Mavericks) reverts back to default settings after close.  How to fix this?

For example, if I choose Mail->Preferences->Viewing->Use classic layout, it reverts just fine when the program is open.  However, when I quit out of the program and then reopen it, Apple Mail reverts back to its default styling.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
