Apple Mail would not send .mac mail but will send POP mail

I have an iMAC G5 with Leopard 10.5.3. I use Apple Mail and I cannot send mail via my .mac account an dthe error message say SMTP server can not be accessed. I change the port it works while I am in the program. I quit and sign back on and the same port setting does not work. I am using 587 without SSL checked. I have no problems sending on my POP accounts such as GMAIL and ATT Mail.
I also have a time capsule for wireless back up.
Any thoughts?

Yes. My thought is, that the .Mac mailserver were simply down due to a failure or for maintenance at the point of time your couldn't send. My next thought is, that this might happen from time to time. And my third thought is to check the .Mac system state and try again when the servers are up and running again.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.

  • Email not opening This is a sudden thing, Email had been working fine for two months then today would not stay open now it will not open at all. after trying to open mail I receive a white screen for a nano second and the app closes

Email not opening on my iPad2 This is a sudden thing, email had been working fine since purchasing the device then today would not stay open,  now it will not open at all. After trying to open mail I receive a white screen for a nano second and the app closes.

Have you tried closing the Mail app completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Same exact problem with my Apple TV.  Worked like a charm the first two times we used it.  Haven't used it in about a month, now no Apple logo when I turn it on, or the logo appears momentarily and distorted, and then an error message from my Samsung HD TV:  Mode Not Supported.

  • Apple just would not entertain their own problem

My i5s has a screen display problem that is verified by the few service centers technicians to be hardware problem. But because the warranty is slightly over 1 month off its 1year warranty, I'm totally shut out from lodging any service request either through Apple online support or the service centers. I've been ding-dong here and there by the Apple online and the service centers without any proper explanation. The final conclusion is that Apple just WOULD NOT entertain my request AT ALL!! I've posted on this forum, but what's the use? Apple won't even acknowledge at all, just hoping someone in the community will reply on their behalf. having said all these, are Apple phones meant to last only 1 year? This problem is clearly Apple's, but they simply just do not acknowledge it. What can I do? Do I need to resort to social media to air my grouse?

Your iPhone came with a one-year hardware warranty.  You had the option (and apparently declined) to extend that coverage with AppleCare/AppleCare Plus.
You are reporting a problem to Apple after the one-year warranty has expired.
Therefore, service for your iPhone will incur an associated cost.  In the U.S., thats $269, compared to $549 or more for a new device.  So, instead of telling you to buy a totally new device, Apple offers to replace your device at a 51+% discount.  Not many tech companies do that.
What is difficult to understand about all of this?
There has to be a definitive expiration date for warranty-service.  You're wanting to shift that time frame to suit your needs.  But you can't change the deal after the fact.  If one year was not enough to suit your expectations, then why did you purchase the product?
The last car I bought had a 3 year/36,000 warranty for everything except the power train.  If on the 37th month or at 37,000 miles I encountered a problem, then I would pay for the service.  If I didn't think that was fair, then I should have taken steps to extend that coverage, which I did to be on the safe side.
Here's your 'proper explanation':  Your iPhone has some form of hardware issue.  The root cause is unknown, but (probably) irrelevant*, because you are outside of your hardware warranty coverage.  Therefore, if you require or desire service for your device, unless your specific issue is covered under some form of extension program, you will pay for such service.
There.  All done.  Have a nice day!
*Note: If your iPhone has been opened or serviced by an unauthorized individual, then Apple reserves the right to refuse any and all service and support for that device, permanently.

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it

I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes  in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill  pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes.

Yes the original Install Discs can be replaced for a nominal fee. Call AppleCare, you will need a credit card and the serial number of the machine. You can use the AppleCare Contact Info for the phone number on your part of the planet.

puchased music in itunes. but no file can be found. Have checked for available downloads but nothing available. Went to purchase again thinking i would not be charged again, but it warns me that i will actually be buying again and may have duplicates in library after purchase. Normaly after i purchase from itunes, it is a free download any time after, and on my other devices.
Why can't itunes locate these files?

It has always been very basic to maintain a backup of the important files and data on your computer.
Use that backup to put everything back.

  • Mail account would not send email.  Now it won't send or receive.  I use yahoo plus.  Troubleshoot, virus, etc.? How do I start over if necessary?

A few days ago, got the message that I could not connect to the outgoing server.  Tried a few things suggested here.  Nothing worked.  Now, I can't send or receive mail.  Any help would be most appreciated.  I am not a tech type at all.  Thanks in advance!

Hi Ozzie, Yahoo has frequent outages, & also had 20 million usenames hacked in the last few days.
    http://downrightnow.com/yahoomail
Can you login using a Web Browser?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the exact message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.
The Password rejection can confuse people since it's a catch all meaning...
This Password, Username, Authentication method... is not recognized on this Port to this Server, or a server end problem.
If using a browser to login via WebMail works it's not Name or Password, but one of the other ones.
    The receiving email ports are:
    IMAP is port 143
    IMAP-SSL is port 993
    POP is port 110
    POP-SSL is port 995
    Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.

  • IPhone not sending POP mail?  Here's a work-around.

Like some other people out there, I haven't been able to get the Mail App on the iPhone to talk nice to my POP email host's server. It receives mail just fine, but will not send. I've tried all the fixes I could find suggested out there, and had several back-and-forths with my server host's tech support, and then spent (literally) two hours with an upper level Apple tech trying to get the device and server working together . . . to no avail.
Until such time as my server opens up a new hole and allows easier access . . . or until Apple figures out some way to penetrate the pinpricks that are already there . . . I've come up with a reasonably good work-around that might be helpful for some of the others out there who are having similar issues.
    It's a little convoluted, but it's easy to do, and there's no hacking/tinkering . . . so just follow it step-by-step.
    1. Create a Gmail Account. Ultimately, you'll be sending your regular POP account mail through their server . . . so you'll need a Gmail Account.
    2. Once that's created, there's an option to: "Use Gmail to send from your other email addresses" . . . and we're gonna get that set up now. To do that, log into your Gmail Account. Then go to Settings (at the top-right of screen). Then go to Accounts (the second Tab over). Then, where it says: "Send Mail As:", click on the option to "Add another email address". That'll open up another box that let's you fill in the name and email address of an alternative email account. Put your primary POP email account information here.
    3. Gmail will then take you through a brief verification process, to determine if, indeed, you actually have access to the POP email account that you're trying to "spoof". Just follow the instructions.
    4. Now, let's fix our iPhone's settings so that our POP account can use Gmail's Outgoing SMTP mail server. Go to your Mail Settings, and select your POP account (assuming you've already got one created that has the Incoming mail part working just fine). Scroll down to your Outgoing Mail Server settings, and either turn off your delinquent primary server and add a new server with the settings I'm about to give you. Or, what I did was, just change your primary server info to the following:
    5. Here's the server settings that will work:
    Host Name: smtp.gmail.com
User Name: use your full gmail email address
    Password: use your gmail password
    Use SSL: Turned On
    Authentication: Password
    Server Port: 587
    6. Now, you should be able to send mail from your POP account through the Mail App on the iPhone, using Gmail's SMPT server as a proxy. You can already use the AT&T outgoing server settings in this same way, actually . . . but only when you're on the AT&T network (Edge or 3G) . . . not when you're on a Wi-Fi network.
Truth is, this trick would work even if we didn't do Step #2 and Step #3 . . . but then the email that we sent from the iPhone would have our Gmail Account information in the headers of our sent email, rather than our POP accounts reply-to information. Following Steps #2 and #3 make it appear as though the mail was still sent from our primary POP account.
Hope that's useful for someone else out there, that's been knocking their head against a wall trying to get their mail up and running. I'll post this on a few forums.
    All the best --
    D

I don't get any pop-ups anywhere nor any menus (if there are supposed to be some). The code is rather messy, also, with all those on-the-fly definitions for styles and endlessly long JavaScript actions. Quite possible that the links override one another. Not to ruin your day, but I'd definitely start from scratch with an empty page and a clean style sheet for the various elements. IMO that's the only way to get this working properly.
