Apple menu not functioning.

hi, my drop down Apple menu is not opening (when shutting down i must use the manual button and not the menu). all other menus open and function perfectly. the only other strange item that i have going is the "new mail" icon is not showing up in the oval when sending email......
two strange things that i have not been able to resolve. thanks so much in advance for any help that anyone has to offer.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I would recommend you use the Accounts System Preferences to create a brand new user. Then log out (you can use shift-Apple-q to log out without the Apple menu) and log in as the new user. Does the Apple menu work for the new user? If so, then your user has a preference file or setting that's causing the problem. If not, then you have a system-wide or hardware issue. Let us know what you find out from this troubleshooting step and we'll try to help from there.

  • Missing Dock & Apple Menu Not Responding

About a month ago, I turned on my desktop imac to find no dock and no item on the apple menu work except for the sleep function. I am not the most computer savvy person so any help in dummy terms would be great. I have spent the last month reading post after post with similar problems and tried all solutions with no success. I have tried repairing permissions and disk repair from the tiger cd. I have reset the pram or something like that. I have also tried creating a test user id account and could not even log in under the new account. I am in deep deep need of help. Anyones advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Drop Down Menu not functioning

I'm very VERY new to dreamweaver/fireworks but have been making small changes to multipul websites for a company. They have asked me to come up with a totally new design for their primary webpage and I'm having an issue with the drop-down menu.
I'm created the menu in fireworks using the hotspot tool and it "previews" just fine in both fireworks and dreamweaver. I went through the export process in fireworks and exported the hotspots/images and html code into my primary folder for the website. I pasted the html-code in the location that I wanted on the webpage.
When I upload the page and go to view it the drop-down-menu does not function properly. I have to add an <div> after my .jpg banner for the images of the dropdown to appear. Even then the pull-down-menu does not show up properly.
*Side note* the page also loads VERY SLOWLY now, not sure why. In an attempt to start over I access the "remote view" of the webpage through dreamweaver and deleted all but the "Admin" folder which it did not allow me to delete? Did I majorly mess something up here?
I'm also attachin and image that is a screenshot of what the menu/root folder looks like in dreamweaver

Firstly, the link to the imported stylesheet is wrong - it appears to be pointing to your hard drive:  that needs to be fixed and if it relates to the menu, likely the reason why the menu isn't visible.
    @import url("../../../../../../../../S|/All Users Documents/Graphics/Chris/Greater Michigan PMC/indexpulldown.css");
Are you working in a defined DW site?  It's very important that you are - it's the way that DW keeps track of all the links and paths.
    Define a site:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/140/tn_14028.html
Next:  Those FWs exported dropdowns are atrocious, there was a reason the functionality was removed from the latest FWs and DW.   Even though a CSS version is available, it may be ok to use for protyping for certainly not for live production sites.
POP UP MENUS - why not to use them:

There are much better ways to build a dropdown menu, one of them is the Spry Menu available in CS3 and CS4.  They too, can cause issues, but at least the links throughout your site are inside the html code, not in the javascript.

*Side note* the page also loads VERY SLOWLY
now, not sure why. In an attempt to start over I access the "remote
view" of the webpage through dreamweaver and deleted all but the
"Admin" folder which it did not allow me to delete? Did I majorly mess
    something up here?
I'm not really sure what you mean and which folders you deleted from where  ;-)

  • Apple  menu not working

When in any program or Finder, when I click the little Apple icon () in the corner for the Apple menu, it highlights it but it doesn't pop down. Therefore I cannot select Shut Down, logout and have to do it manually.
Anyone know of a solution to this?
    Thanks

    Hi.
Does it fail to work in your user account only, or in all accounts?
First, repair permissions and verfy/repair your startup volume. If you have already done that, then try moving to the Desktop:
    Users/youruseraccount/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    Users/youruseraccount/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    and restart.
    Good Luck.

  • Displays Menu Not Functioning After Upgrade

Hey, i use another monitor with my macbook so i have the display drop down menu in the menu bar, but since upgrading to 10.5.3 the menu doesnt seem to work?
It still drops down but i can not change the options directly from it, so i have to go into settings/displays to change the resolution/mirroring ect ect?

Find the file /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and move it to your desktop.
Then immediately log out and log in again.
Your menu bar will reset to defaults, and the problem will be fixed.
    Good luck!

  • Help menu not functioning

After upgrading to Mavericks the help menu doesn't work. I can search, but when I click on a topic I get...nothing. This happens in Safari, iTunes, Finder etc.
No problems when I had OS X 10.8. I'm on a danish version of Mavericks and an iMac 2011.
    Any thoughts? Thanks.
    Michael

The problem has been solved. It was corrupted Quicktime Preference files. I'm not sure of the exact mechanism that caused the 10.4.5 update to corrupt these files.
    Here is the solution:
Remove the following two files from the Preferences Folder in the main user's Library:
    com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
    QuickTime Preferences
Logout and then log back in.
New versions of these files will be created by Quicktime upon launching Safari.

  • Apple updates not functional

Imac core 2 duo running snow leopard 10.6.8. Tells me about uploads (airport, java and itunes, I think), then downloads, then cannot install due to "unknown error". Always. Even if I try one at a time.  Happens every time, for a week now. How do I stop this?

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Presenter Menu Not Functioning

PowerPoint 2003 - Me and another team mate are having trouble
with the presenter menu. After we upgraded from Breeze to
Presenter, we could see the Presenter menu in PPT, but it doesn't
work. For example, if we click on a Presenter menu item, nothing
happens. We've tried uninstalling Presenter and reinstalling but
with no luck. Any help you could offer would be very much
    appreciated.

We too are having the same problem. I just purchased several
copies of Presenter for our Instructional Designers. Our IS
department did the install, Adobe Presenter appears in the menu
bar, but non of the drop down menu items work - not even HELP. Our
IS department is looking into the issue, but even after a
re-install, the issue hasn't been fixed.
We are running PPT 2003 and XP SP2.
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

  • Horizontal menu not functioning properly

So I created a Spry horizontal menu, made a couple of changes to the appearance, and when I test the file the menu does not drop down to show the submenus of any of the buttons. I am only running this on my testing server and not live, but I don't see why that would make a difference. Any insight would be great.

It sounds to me as if you have somehow disrupted the lists that make up the menus.

  • Apps not functioning

    Hello,
The other day my computer got hung up while doing software updates--now some of my applications don't work. The icons show up as blank text icons.
The problem is unique to my main account. I can make a new user account and the apps are fine. I tried replacing the preference files for the apps (for example Photoshop) and I tried repairing the disk permissions, but that did not change anything. What else should I do? Is there some Apple system file that could be corrupted for my account?
    Thanks

    Powermac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

There are a couple things you should try.
    1) Run the maintenance scripts in the Terminal with the following commands:
    sudo periodic daily
    sudo periodic weekly
    sudo periodic monthly
Note: after doing the daily, it will ask for your password. Type it in and hit return, but you won't see anything as you type. Also, the weekly script will take much longer to run than the other two.
    2) Run these commands in the terminal to clear the Launch services:
    cd ~/Library/Preferences/
    rm LS*
    rm .LS*
After doing these two things, log out, and back in (using the Apple menu, not Fast user switching).
If this doesn't help, try starting up from your OS X install disk, and selecting Disk Utility from the Installer menu (after selecting your language). Select your Disk, and click the Repair Disk button.
    Good Luck.

  • Biege G3 Monitor Works but can't see the Dock or apple menu

While my G5 is in the shop, trying to use my G3 with either a VGA or my 23 inch Cinema display. It boots fine with one or both monitors connected but I can't see the dock or any of the applications - especially the preferences panel, I manage to get open (I used a keyboard shortcut to get the applications window open). I can drag the window back and forth across the monitors so in that way it's acting like it's in a two-monitor setup. I can open (and see) the force quit window which tells me the preferences panel is open - but where the heck is it?
I've zapped the pram more than once and restarted using a dvi to vga converter but neither has made a difference.
I'm guessing I'm running 10.1 but, as it's been awhile and I can't see the apple menu, not sure. I tried starting in classic to see if I could get to the preferences panel that way but it hangs on the grey screen.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Do you have any kind of cable or video-adapter plugged into any of the other video output ports: Macintosh-video or RCA-video out? Even if there is not a monitor, the cable or adapter alone may trick the video card into thinking one is present.
(Another interesting behavior with dual monitors in OSX: Usually the Dock follows the monitor on which the Menu Bar is located when you have the Dock positioned at the bottom. But if you use the left or right position, it goes to whichever monitor is on the left or right, no matter which one has the Menu Bar.)

  • Under APPLE MENU system preferences only opens sporadically, mostly not

Under APPLE MENU system preferences only opens sporadically, mostly not. I booted up with installation disk and ran a check but everything was alright. However, when I tried to click on items using the disk as a startup disk it frequently wouldn't function.

    George,
    Thanks for asking that question.
I offered this solution based upon similar successful advice which was given to another poster who solved this problem:Long story short I ended up reinstalling Mac OS X using Archive and Install. When I first used the computer following reinstalling Mac OS X, I was able to access the System Preferences by selecting them under the Apple in the menu bar. However, I have now updated my software using Software Update, and now I can't access System Preferences when I click on them under the Apple in the menu. The computer just acts like I never selected System Preferences.
Where have System Preferences gone??? provides another example of Previous Systems folder interfering with System Preferences.
Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X explains a different problem with a Previous Systems folder: Example 1: You downgrade by performing an Archive and Install installation, but do not update to a later version of Mac OS X. The Previous Systems folder contains later versions of applications that may contribute to this issue. If you have proper backups, I recommend trashing the Previous Systems folder as soon as you can determine that the new system is functioning properly. The Previous Systems folders will either take up too much space or contribute to unexplained system problems.
    ;~)

  • Why did Apple remove the Hold-Menu/Backlight function?

I just updated to ipod software version 1.1.1 and wondering why the "Hold Menu to switch Backlight on/off" function was replaced with "Hold Menu to return to Main Menu" function???
Ive been a huge fan of the Menu-Backlight switch since my 4G ipod, as I prefer to always keep the Backlight off and use it only when I absolutely cannot read the screen. I find it saves significant battery life compared to even the 2 second Backlight Timer. In the dark, this function is very practical especially since performing a simple operation such as adjusting volume or skipping tracks doesnt require any backlight. Also, I take a dark ghetto commuter bus and try hard to not draw attention to my 5G ipod with a bright glow from within my jacket pocket.
Why cant Apple offer an option in Settings menu or an alternative version with different Hold-Menu functionality?

Well the beauty of the old Hold-Menu>Backlight function was that it was basically a quick on/off switch...light turns on...light turns off...whereas the new "Quick Return to Main Menu" function didnt really solve a problem. If you need to get return to the main menu, you can blindly press Menu repeatly until you reach the main menu, how hard is that? Also, you only need to press Menu a maximum 4 times to reach the Main Menu from any submenu (unless youve created multiple subfolder hiearchies within the Notes folder.
My point is, as a result of elimination of the Backlight "switch" is increased precise navigation, which equals a loss in usability and practicality. So what happens when you suddenly need to use backlight? You either prepare in advance, lets say everyday before you head home from the office, you need to remember to set the Backlight Timer on. Or you face the scenario where it gets kinda dark by the time you leave the office, but you forgot to turn on the Backlight Timer...now what? Well look for some well lit place to change the settings, or if you can blindly navigate to the main menu and scroll carefully and precisely to the Backlight option. Ok a little extreme but I hope some of you reading this GET it.
So far the only way to retain this practical function is reverting to or continue using ipod software version 1.0. The most annoying thing about continuing to run v1.0 is everytime you connect the ipod to the computer, theres a popup begging you to update the ipod software. By refusing to update, you will miss out on some bug fixes (esp for Videora converted videos) and the volume limiter function.
Show your support for the lost Menu-Backlight function and maybe Apple will hear us out.
