Apple Mini Display Port NOT working at resolutions over 1600X1200!

Problem:
Apple Mini Display Port does NOT work at resolutions over 1600X1200 on NON Apple Cinema Displays.
That means if you own any other brand of monitor such as NEC, Lacie, etc. you will NOT get native resolution on your 24 inch monitor as it is stuck at a maximum resolution of 1600X1200.
This story was mentioned on "Macbreak Weekly" show 4-14-2009. I have since checked with a few people and it would indeed seem to be true at this point.
I REALLY hope a solution from Apple comes soon and this is not some new policy of theirs. If so, it may be the last Mac Pro I will or can ever own. The reason is I do a lot of 3D work with C4D, Vue, Modo and Photoshop CS4 so I MUST have a monitor like the high-end ones from Lacie that have 100% color gamut and Adobe RGB. I can NOT be tied down to an Apple Cinema display due to that work. At this time, it seems this means I would only get 1600X1200 resolution on that 24 inch monitor.
Has anyone else confirmed this too and if so what the heck is Apple thinking or better still going to do about it? I LOVE my Mac Pro but if they start forcing displays on us then I won't be buying another Mac, it's just that simple.

Thanks, but I think two things may be different in that setup.
1. If I understood correctly, it's a first gen without a "Mini Display Port" and
2. It was a laptop not a Mac Pro with a video card.
I think it has specifically to do with either one or both of the above combos. In particular I think it's the video card they are putting in them.
I am not sure if a new 2009 Apple laptop with a Mini Display Port connected to a NON Apple display would have an issue or work like yours does now. It would be interesting to get to the bottom of this for sure because it REALLY hurts people like myself that are into 3D design.
I will try to get back on this once I continue to find out more details.

  • Mini Display Port Not Working, WHY?

When I first got my MacPro I tried to display two monitors and couldn’t as the Mac didn’t detect anything fed from the Mini Display Port.
When connecting Either my BenQ M2700HD, BenQ FP222W or My Wacom Cintiq 12wx to the MAC via the Mini Display Port none of them were detected by the MAC. However all 3 work through the DVI Port on the MACPRO itself.
I have tried 2 HDMI>MiniDisplayPort (officail apple) adapters in order to rule out the adapter itself and neither fixed the problem.
Therefore I can only guess that its the Mini Display Port’s internal connection.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I havent yet opened up the computer as im hoping i can solve the problem without doing so.
It's a mac pro so all it takes to get inside is to take the lid off, right?  Not a big deal.  But so far, for this problem, I'm not sure what you would plan to do whle "in" there.
I checked all external connections and they are all 100% secure and fully seated.
    Ok.
I have notice that when i turn the 2nd monitor on/off (on the monitor itself) the 1st monitor flashes blue.
Why would it be doing this and still not detect the monitor itself?
Because a video card problem?  Maybe you need a replacement.   I supose it's possible for the mDPs to not wiork even though the DVI does.

  • Sound Out from Mini Display Port Not Working on a Particular TV

I have a Macbook Pro that I purchased new a few months ago. I use an adaptor to run the display out of the Mini Display port to an HDMI cable on my TV, sound and all. I have also used it while traveling to do the same thing on hotel TVs with HDMI ports.
When I do this, I have to go into System Prefs>Sound and specify the sound output should go to the model of TV that is displayed in the prefs. It always seemed to detect the model of TV when I have it hooked up.
I am staying in a house where I can't get the sound to go out of a Toshiba TV. It shows up in the sound prefs, but I can't ear a thing. The only way I can hear sound is if I tell it to use the internal speakers.
What am I doing wrong when it comes to the Toshiba?
    Thanks.

    Greetings,
But I wanna know what is the best way going ahead to get this fixed.
Thats up to you.  Given the testing you have performed the only additional items I would suggest would be:
Reset the SMC and then test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Reset the PRAM and then test: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html
You can make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.
Calling AppleCare and having them send you a box for the computer would be the fastest method of repair (usually) as an AppleStore or an Apple Authorized Service provider may not have the parts in stock.  You could certainly take the computer in to have them look at it and tell you what the repair time frame would be.
Also, if they decide to replace the part, will I be shelling out any money inspite of the coverage ?
If you would like to read the warranty of the Macbook Pro, Hardware warranty details are found here: http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/
The warranty covers manufacturing issues. As long as the failure is due to a hardware component failure and not outside influence then there is no out of pocket expense.
If the port has failed because a 1 year old shoved a nail in it, rain blew in the window and shorted out the logic board, SUV backed up over the computer and broke the port, then the warranty will not cover it.  They will contact you and let you know that the repair is not covered and ask if you want it repaired at your own cost or you can pick up / have the computer sent back to you.
If for some reason you find out the issue is not covered then you could take it up with your insurnace company (renters / home owners etc) or your credit card company if you purchased the computer with a credit card.  Some credit cards offer hardware coverage for purchases.
    Best of luck.

  • HDMI to Mini Display Port not working?!?!

    Hi,
I use my macbook Air (latest one with mini display port) to watch movies on my TV. I use a hdmi to mini display port adapter cable which worked perfect for about 6 months. Yesterday, I plugged my mac in and nothing appeared. I have no idea why- no settings have been changed.
As usual, the screen goes blue and then back to normal but the TV screen is plain black. In the Display settings, the 'arrangements' tab is missing where I can set mirro displays things. I tried bying a new adapter and trying this with my sister's macbook pro but it still doesnt work.
Any ideas on why this has happened & to how I can fix it?
    Thanks for your help

This is probably NOT the solution you're looking for, but use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm (headphone jack) cable to transmit sound. I use stereo speakers with my setup, sounds far better than the TV.

  • Mini display port not working in xp

Got windows xp partitioned onto macbook pro, and everything else works fine, but trying to use the mini display port does nothing when connected to a tv. any ideas? am I missing a driver?
I looked around and other sources say that it should see the MDP as an external monitor but the only display option I get is the graphics card itself.
please leave some advice, I really want to play some fallout on the big screen

omg nm, figured it out, went into the nvidea settings and set it up there

  • GS70 miniDP/mini Display Port not working

    Hi forum,
I recently got a GS70 with 860m graphics that runs win8.1. I can use the HDMI interface with no problems with various monitors. The displays are detected both by the intel software as well as the "change screen resolution" config of windows.
When I plug a monitor into the miniDP ports however the displays are not detected by the system. I tried this with a 27" Samsung as well as a 30" Dell U3011. I used a miniDP2HDMI cable, a miniDP2DP cable and an active miniDP2DVI adapter, none of them works. I am using the latest Nvidia drivers, they have been updated online through the nvidia experience stuff.
I tried to troubleshoot this by using an Ubuntu live CD with the same results. HDMI works out of the box as soon as I plug a cable in. Nothing happens when I use the miniDP cable though.
I also noticed that one cable (miniDP2HDMI) I can put fully into the miniDP port while the other one(miniDp2DP) sticks out 3-4mm and does not seem to go into further even with force. They look alike and the packaging clearly says "miniDP..." though.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks.

have you tried to press fn + F2 button? some times some displays wont give signal untill you press that button and then laptop one will either go black or go off then on again and then external monitor will wake up and give picture so try it if you havent and then return back to us if it works or not.

  • Mini display port not working?

I am trying to connect my late 2009 iMac to an extenal monitor.  Been to store twice now and both adapters are not fitting???  Am I missing something here...
    Thanks

Yup you are missing something what I don't know, however the first thing is learning how to insert a photo into this forum. Use the camera icon you see when you are replying or creating a message and follow the prompts. The second is following Apple's instructions for connecting an external display, which is located at:

So I downgraded those packages and the kernel with no luck.
I tried to get the HDMI working via Synergy... and failed
I then tested the Display Port on Windows and it did not work there either - exhibiting the same symptoms as Linux - the OS sees the monitor but no data was transferred.
So I ended up using one of my Display Link monitors at work... the USB monitors were ok, just an irritation with a flickering mouse.
I hope it is the miniDP>HDMI adapter and not the port... very frustrated by this problem.
I hope to test another adapter soon.
I think as nobody else is experiencing this issue that it may well be hardware/firmware related.
Hope there is a happy end to this post but not feeling so positive right now.

  • Is it possible to input itunes into DVI/HDCP input from imac with Apple mini display portS?

Is it possible to input itunes into DVI/HDCP input from imac with Apple mini display port? Or is there another way?

The problem with itunes is needing a computer running it. or continuous internet connection.
A Time Capsule is AC mains powered.. no battery. Although you can certainly buy an older Gen4 TC and modify it ...
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
I have run my TC on a 12V SLA battery.. which would neatly meet that part of the functionality you want. But it is heavy and not really the rugged sort of device I think you want.
But I would look at other media players and other ways of storing movies than iTunes.. if you want to carry the whole lot around with you .. A bunch of SD cards even you could plug into the ipad??
    External storage for iPad?
A small cheap PC/Mac laptop with a 1TB hard disk  in it.. and 11" or 13" screen.. can often be a much better solution than lugging around multiple items so you can fit Apple devices into your life.

  • Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter Resolution Issue

Hi there folks, I just had to replace my NVIDIA 8800 so I opted for the upgrade to the ATI Radeon HD 5770 (Apple part number: MC742ZM/A)
I have two monitors on my desk, an apple 30" cinima display and a smaller 19" Hyundai monitor that uses a VGA connection as my second display.
After hooking up my Cinima Display to the DVI, and the Hyundai to the Mini Display Port via adapter and restarting my Mac the second monitor does not show up. Well, It appears on the arangement screen, and on the system profile screen, but no image appears.
If I unpluged and replugged the monitor  then I can get an image to appear. Only I cannot change the resolution from 800x600. The monitor supports 1900x1200.  I can see the correct resolution in the list, however selecting that resolution will not stay. It always reverts back to 800x600. I tried several other lower resolutions and none of those work either.
I zaped the PRAM, checked for system updates, hopped on one leg and cursed the gods but nothing has worked so far. I can give tech support a call tomorrow, but I was hoping someone on the forum knows of a solution since I know many of you are smarter than the tech support folks.
    Thanks in advance!

I had the exact same problem. It actually escalated from there and it would crash at the startup screen (the white one with the apple and the spinning gear). The only way I was able to fix this was to reformat the entire computer. I was lucky enough to have backed up all my data when it first started crashing. I've only reformatted yesterday and things seem fine for now. I don't know what caused it, or how to fix the problem any other way.

  • Mini-Display Adapter Not Working?

    Hello,
Has anyone had issues with the Apple mini-display to Dual-Link adapter? Any problems getting it connected to the DVI cable (very tight fit) or have a dead on arrival adapter?
I have a Mac Pro 6-core. I just received my 27-inch monitor and plugged it into the Mini-display port. I have two other monitors - Dell 21-inch monitors. One is hooked up to the DVI port on my Radeon HD 5870. The other was hooked up to the other mini-display port via the Apple Mini-display to Dual-Link DVI.
When I try to connect the DVI cable to the Dual-Link DVI side of the adapter, it is a very tight fit. To get the screws to take hold, I have to press very firmly. Once secured, I plugged it in and the monitor is not recognized. Previously (before the 27-inch monitor came in) I used this very same monitor and DVI cable and it worked fine in the Radeon DVI slot. Still I swapped cables, switched mini-display ports, and switched the two Dell monitors around. And none of the pins on the cables are bent or damaged. It appears it is the mini-display to DVI adapter.
I am in the military overseas, so to return it to Apple is a major event. So I want to be sure it is the adapter before i go to the trouble and expense of sending it back, having Apple send it to a family member, then have that family member send it to me (since Apple doesn't send items to FPO/APO addresses). Anyone else have any issues with the adapter?
    Jim

Let me be clearer; I've got the MDP-DVI adapter connected to a cable that is DVI on one end and HDMI on the other.  I've got both laptops so I can compare side by side.  I plug in the MDP-DVI adapter to the old laptop and all works well; I plug it into the new laptop and while the laptop does see the TV, the display modes for it are all 1080p which is wrong I don't see any desktop image on the TV unlike when I plug it into the older laptop.  This is very disappointing as I expect things to just work with Apple products.

  • Mini dv port not working

When the mini dv port stops working, is there anything software wise that might resurrect it?  This is on a refurb (from Apple) 2008 MBP, and the port was never actually used for anything until this past week, and it is not working.  Could it be software related?  Suggestions for repair?  I've looked everywhere but it seems this is a very uncommon problem.

  • Mini DVI port not working on Macbook

I often watch movies streaming on the internet by connecting my Macbook to my television via my Mini DVI to S-video adaptor cable.
Last week, however, it suddenly stopped working. The television can still detect the display, but the image is super distorted and moving in a static-ey way. I can only vaguely make out the icons on my desktop on the TV screen.
I thought that perhaps my adaptor cable was at fault, so I bought a new one - but the problem remains. I have also tried resetting the PRAM, repairing the disc and permissions with Disc Utility, and cleaning the Mini DVI port. I am pretty certain that it is a hardware problem with the port itself.
One of the pins on my Mini DVI port looks like it could be out of place. It is kind of squished at the bottom of the port instead of laying flat like the others. I’m thinking that this might be the culprit. However, I have tried to straighten it out using a safety pin and I’m not really able to do it.
Am I right to assume this is a hardware problem with my port? Any advice about how I might go about fixing this? Is there a way to repair the port without having to replace the whole logic board?
The Macbook in question is a 2008 Core 2 Duo running Lion.
Any suggestions at all would be much appreciated!

Do not dismiss the possibility that the problem may be with the TV.  Based on what you have tried so far, an appointment at an Apple store genius bar is your best option.  The evaluation will be FREE and then you should be in a position to make an informed decision.
    Ciao.

  • Mini-DVI port not working: wear and tear?

I had been happily using the mini-DVI port to play content on TV, using a DVI to Video adapter : plugging and unplugging probably twice a week.
Now it seems to have stopped, abruptly: no signal at all is reaching the TV. (Adapter still works fine on my MacBook.)
What are the chances of wear and tear damaging the DVI port? Is this a complicated fix? Any other thoughts? No recent upgrades or updates.
"About this Mac" reckons it's mirroring fine, so it feels like a hardware thing. Many thanks in advance.

    Hello ewfelton
It is very possible that the DVI port on the iMac has been damaged from wear and tear, as it's harder to get at than the MacBook.
I would disconnect everything from the iMac, grab a clean towel and turn it face down on the desk. Then with a magnifying glass and light inspect the DVI port for a broken or bent pin. In the process of inspecting the port your SMC will also be reset, follow the instruction for "How to reset the System Management Controller" when your done.
If the port seems OK and the SMC reset doesn't get it going use Disk Utility to Repair Disk Premissions and try it again.
Your local Apple Store or local Apple Service Provider can replace a bad or damaged DVI port.
