Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter - Gender Question

The Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter photograph in the Apple Store looks like the DVI end is female.
Is this correct?
The Overview photo is good because it made me aware that I needed more than just the adapter itself to use it, but I think it would help if an "end-on" view could also accompany the view of this product - just for old fogeys like me.
I'm sure that some sort of industry 'convention' must exist so that I could use to determine this for myself. Be jiggered if I could find one though.

Yes, the end is female. That makes it the same as if the connector were built-in. For example, the connector on the MacBook Pro is a female DVI. So you would need the same, and very common, DVI male-to-male connector to hook up a monitor. You don't need any extra adapters. Just the cable. Or if you have an Apple Cinema Display, the correct cable is already attached to the monitor.

  • 27: iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter quits working post-firmware

I iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter suddenly quit working after I installed Apple's latest iMac display firmware update. This is an Intel Core i5; the monitor is an LG Flatron 24" Wide, and when it powers up it says "no video input" and goes into power-saving mode. No amount of replugging cables helps, but the monitor works fine on other computers.
The Displays control panel just shows one monitor, and clicking Detect Displays does nothing.
I suspect Apple's Display Firmware Update. My installer log shows the following, but the problem only happened today after the latest update:
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.0
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/5/10 7:29 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
I have automatic updates disabled, but after each update I would see more firmware updates ready, but caution leads me to never install more than one of these at a time, and then to wait a while to see if anything bad happens. The odd thing is that the Display Update 1.0 seems to have been installed three times in this course of events. Alas, there appears to be no way to uninstall a firmware update.
Here is the System Profiler Graphics/Displays output:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x944a
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-B9110C-425
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.383
    Displays:
    iMac:
    Resolution: 2560 x 1440
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Built-In: Yes
    Connection Type: DisplayPort
    Display Connector:
    Status: No Display Connected
It says the Mac sees no display connected, and the display gets no video signal. Since the adapter is an active device (it has powered electronics to convert DisplayPort signals to DVI signals) I suppose it could have just coincidentally died. But that seems unlikely given that the thing worked perfectly just before the last firmware update.
Does anybody have similar experience, or better yet, a fix?

Unfortunately the Apple Knowledge Base does not give much information about this update. Such has how to tell if it has been successfully installed. I suspect that because it keeps recurring in the install log that it has not been installed successfully as yet. Are you receiving this update through Software Update? Can you locate the installer for this update? It maybe located in Apps/Utilities.
Some firmware update installations can be interrupted/corrupted by attached devices. If you find the update's installer on your iMac, I suggest that you detach all external devices from the iMac, use an Apple USB keyboard & mouse if available, follow the instructions carefully and install the update manually. If you do not locate the installer I suggest downloading manually from the link below and installing it.
The Knowledge Base article mentions that your iMac should also have a Graphics Firmware Update. I suggest that you download and install that as well.

I cracked my screen. I want to use other monitor which I had one. I bought an Apple Mini-DP to VGA adapter. It worked. It means I can see ADDITIONAL screen. However I want to use this monitor for the main screen. How can I do?? Please help.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the monitor. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the monitor and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the monitor your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.

  • Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter flickers

I have 2 Samsung SyncMaster 23 in, HD Displays connected to my Mac Mini. The Display connected via the Mini DP to VGA adapter flickers erratically. This started happening after installing the latest upgrade of OSX Mountain Lion. I called Apple support, they gave me a list of steps to try to fix the problem, which I followed to the letter, to no avail. The problem is annoying, to say the least. I tried to find out if there was a firmware update for the adapter, but I am running the latest firmware (1.03).
I would appreciate any help to solve this issue.

    Thank you for your message.
    1. Both monitors only have VGA input.
    2. The other adapter, Mini-DVI to VGA has always worked properly.
    3. The Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter is an Apple original product I bought at an Apple store. I bought 2 adapters.
    4. Actually I have 2  Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapters: The one I use with my Mac Mini, and another adapter I use to connect my Mac Book Pro to a Panasonic projector.
    5. I have tried using both adapters, and the flickering problem is present using either adapter.
    6. I believe the flickering problem is definitely something that needs to be addressed and solved by Apple. The adapter is its product, and should work as advertised, no matter what version of OSX I am running. Please remember that there was no flickering before I upgraded to the latest OSX Mountain Lion.
    7. I do not believe buying an adapter from another manufacturer, as you suggest, would solve the problem.
    Thank you for your help.

  • My Apple Mini Display Port/HDMI adapter is not working after upgrading to Maverick?

I am using my 13" Macbook Pro Purchased July 2013 on my 42" Samsung TV.  I route through a HDMI adapter (purchased from Apple) to do my presentations. As a note my setup has been working great for the last year. Immediately following the upgrade to Maverick my Samsung displays "No Signal" and changes state "Check Signal Cable" when the cable is disconnected.  Obviously there is some type of signal but it is not recognized.  I tried working with Apple support and they said that the adapter I was using must not be an Apple product.  I investigated fully thinking I may have possibly bought the wrong item, after much research I have exactly the same thing sold on the Apple store online and I even went to 3 Apple stores locally to see if there was possibly another adapter that I should have purchased, but it was exactly the same thing I purchased originally.  Help me fix the problem or please provide details on how to go back in operating systems to prior to Maverick (and not lose any of my data), this upgrade was a huge mistake way to many problems and not the quality that I am used to from Apple.

Had a similar problem, but the answer is not a good one.
You are going to have to wait until Apple fix this as some 3rd party monitors are not supported by this update.
    So you can:
    Go back to 10.6.7
    Wait for Lion
    or
Use Onxy to clear up your computer and it may link to it again.
I deleted some preference files, which when they rebuilt themselves after a restart did the trick.
It worked for me, let me know how you get on?

  • Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter longer than 4 inches?

My ViewSonic monitor no longer works with my Macbook Air. Did work for six months. Pretty sure it's the knock off cable - loose in Thunderbolt. The only genuine Apple cable I can find is four inches. Are you kidding me? Anyone know if there is a longer one? Thanks.

STOOOOOOPID! Just figured this out. Dipstick...

  • HT3235 MacBook Air is connected to an external monitor via Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter.  At one time it worked just fine, now when I plug the monitor into the Mac, the mac screen goes blue and nothing appears on the monitor.

This monitor works, on a PC.  Could the connector be bad or the port on the Mac Air?  Any ideas?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to use the MacBook’s keyboard and trackpad to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
If you can’t see your MacBook screen because it’s broken or the backlight is off use the F7 key to switch between Extended Desktop and Mirror Display.
(From the MacBook User Guide: F7 (video mode toggle key) Switch between dual-display mode (extending the desktop across the built-in display and an external display) and video-mirroring mode (presenting the same information on both displays).

  • Question about Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

I want to transfer the display from Dell XPS 15 to Dell ST2220M monitor.
Purchased a HDMI - DVI cable from ebay and tried using it. The laptop shows the monitor name but the display doesn't get passed onto the monitor. The monitor reads "No DVI-D cable".
Does anyone know if Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter works in my case?

  • Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter is not working. Please Help...

I bought an Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter to connect my Macbook to a TV using normal video cable. When I connect the cable, my Laptop DIsplay gives a flickr once and then it shows nothing. I checked Display in the system preference where I don't get a secondary monitor option. My TV is panasonic and it's an old one. I work on Final Cut Pro and it's very very important to see my videos on a TV. What am I doing wrong with the connection? Anyone Please Please help...

Your probably not doing anything wrong. There are thousands of users with Similar issues and it seems to be with many different adapters.
We have Mini DP to VGA (3 different brands) and they all fail most of the time. This seems more prevalent with LCD Projectors. I've tested some (50+) with VGA Monitor (HP) and they all worked, LCD Projector (Epson, Hitachi, and Sanyo) and they all fail, DLP Projector (Sanyo) and one worked.
My Apple Mini DP to DVi works most of the time. My Mini DP to HDMI (Generic non Apple) works every time.
The general consensus is that Apple broke something in the OS around 10.6.4 or 10.6.5 and its not yet fixed. As we are a school we have logged a case with the EDU Support group so will see what happens.

  • Is an Apple ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter the same thing as an old Mini-DP to DVI adapter?

Is an Apple ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter the same thing as an old Mini-DP to DVI adapter?
Will a different adaptor give me better resolution between my old computer and a new monitor?
    Computer: MBP 15-inch Mid 2010
    Monitor: Dell U2713H
Current cable: 20276 3dv ft1 DVI Digital Dual Link with a Apple Mini-DP to DVI adapter to get it to plug into my MBP.
Possible solution?: Apple ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter instead of my old adapter above?

Yes. A single-link DVI connection can't drive that monitor at its maximum resolution.

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter is actually DVI-D? *** Apple!

I just purchased a new MBP (and I love it), along with an Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter. I figured whatever monitor I wanted to plug into, if it was VGA, I could just stick a DVI to VGA adapter on there. Turns out, this adapter only supports DVI-D (digital only). A little fact that Apple fails to mention in their product page.
    What a rip.
That said, does anyone know of a REAL MDP to DVI-I adapter? Do I need to buy the dual-link adapter?

They do say that it is for a "digital monitor, ... that includes a DVI connector."

    No.
Do I need to buy the dual-link adapter?
If you are going to use a 30" DVI display. It's still DVI-D (but dual-link). It will also work with single-link DVI displays.
For a VGA display you need the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter

  • Does Mini Displayport to DVI adapter support analog VGA signal?

I'm just about to buy a macbook pro. Since the MDP (mini displayport) to DVI and MDP to VGA adapters are £20 a pop, I can only afford to get one. Obviously DVI is better in general, but VGA supports more older hardware, CRTs, and the spare VGA input on one of my displays (where the desktop uses the DVI).
What I'd like to know is does the MDP to DVI adapter also support the analog VGA signal on certain pins (like most physical desktop DVI ports do)? If it does, since I have about 3 or 4 DVI to VGA adapters lying around, I can get the MDP to DVI adapter and use the DVI to VGA adapters with it if necessary, but if it doesn't I might be better off getting the MDP to VGA...

No. Unlike DVI, which in the DVI-I configuration has both digital and analog pinouts, DisplayPort (and mini-DisplayPort) are purely digital. Mini-DP to DVI then DVI to VGA will not work. If you look carefully at the Apple Mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter, you'll notice it's a DVI-D connector - digital pins only.
The Apple mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter contains a digital-to-analog converter.
So, you'll have to choose. If you want VGA, get Apple's mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter.

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI + DVI to VGA Display Adapter, will it work?

    Hi,
I have a MBP, and I have just purchased an apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
I want to connect it to a VGA port.
Can I buy an Apple DVI to VGA Display Adapter and connect it to the connector above.
Will that work? Any one with experience who could advise me on that?
    Thanks.

This does not work, because the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter has a DVI-D port that transmits only digital signals. VGA uses analog signals.

  • Mini display to DVI adaptor not working?

Just bought my first Mac, Its a Mac Mini 2.3 i7. Tried to hook my monitor up with an Apple mini display to dvi and when I powered on my Mini got a white screen with apple logo then monitor went black and started searching for a signal. When I switched it over to the HDMI to DVI it works fine. I plan on running dual monitors as soon as my second one comes in,they only had 1 in stock had to order the 2nd one. started with the mini display to DVI first because of the problems I have read about the hdmi port. Monitor is a Dell E2311H 1920x1080 at 60Hz. Any help would be great! Thanks

The issues you read about regarding the Mini's HDMI port are from people using that port to an HDMI monitor/TV. So, HDMI->HDMI. As you mentioned, you're working fine with the supplied HDMI->DVI adapter. I'm surprised that the MiniPortDisplay->DVI isn't working I have one that plugs into the Thunderbold port and it works fine.
