Apple Mobile Device Service does not start

I'm running XP Pro on a Mac Pro with Bootcamp, and have the latest version of iTunes.
Every time I plug in an iDevice, iTunes opens and says that the Apple Mobile Device service hasn't started. I go in to Services and start it, restart iTunes, and we're good. Until I reboot!
I have changed the service to Automatic, but when I restart, same thing.
I have checked the dependencies of the service...they're all Automatic, and started.
I am the Administrator on this system, so it does not appear to be a permissions issue.
iAm getting iNoid.

Hmmm. It's possible that Services and MSConfig are acting at cross purposes here.
In XP, go "Start > Run", type msconfig and hit enter.
Go into your Services tab. Is there a tick next to the Apple Mobile Device Service?
