"Apple Mobile Device service is not started" What does this mean?

When connecting my iPhone to iTunes, it says "This iPhone cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started" What does this mean? It won't connect to my iPhone.

You need to stop and restart the Apple Mobile Device service on your computer.  This is explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567 (open "Restart Apple Mobile Device Serivice")
