How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows
Next see:

Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) won't install with iTunes, either V10.7 or V11. The service can't be started b/c the software is not there. Windows 7 with latest service pack. V11 iTunes installs fine, iPod found, no iPhone 5 b/c no AMDS. Error "insufficient premissions to install AMDS" Tried numerous uninstall / reinstall combinations, installed iTunes as administrator, etc. Somethings not right. What the Heck ?
See the following article for dealing with Apple Mobile Device Services: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
Downloading and installing iTunes will not fix this problem. If the other troubleshooting steps do not work, go to the Control Panel and uninstall iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Services, Quicktime and any other Apple program that might be present. Reboot your computer, then download and install the latest version of iTunes. -

Installting Apple Mobile Device Service
Hello,
I apologize if the subject is already answered in another thread, but I searched for a while even if I found a lot of people with problems looking like mine, I did not find the solution to have my iTunes right.
I have a Windows XP PC where I had installed iTunes a year ago.
Now I bought an iPod Touch, and installed the latest version of iTunes, but it asked me to uninstall Apple Mobile Device Service as it was too old, and my iPod was not recognized in iTunes.
I managed to uninstall Apple Mobile Device Service after a lot of troubles, as it made an error and did not want to uninstall. I removed it from the services, removed it from the installed programs, uninstalled everything named Apple including Bonjour & QuickTime, renamed the C:\PROGRAM FILES\FICHIERS COMMUNS\APPLE folder as a .old folder.
Now, when I install iTunes 9.2.1, it don't install Apple Mobile Device Service back, and so my iPod is not recognized at all.
What should I do ?
Thanks for any help you can provide.many thanks.
The iTunes installation simply does its job, and when it is finished, the Apple Mobile Device Service is simply not present in the Windows Services, and the Apple Mobile Device Support files are not present in the Apple directory.
With a "completely silent" AMDS install failure like that, sometimes there's trouble with HKEYCURRENTUSER registry keys for your normal Windows user account.
If that's what is afoot here, we might be able to get AMDS to install properly by doing the iTunes install from inside a different Windows User account.
So let's try the following procedure.
(1) In your normal Windows user account, do a complete uninstall of iTunes and related componentry as per:
[Suppression et réinstallation d’iTunes, de QuickTime et d’autres composants logiciels sous Windows XP|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925?viewlocale=fr_FR]
(2) Create a new Windows User account with full administrative rights. Log out of your normal account, and log into the new user account. (Do not use fast user switching to move between accounts.)
(3) From inside the new user account, try another iTunes install:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does AMDS install this time?
If so, log out of the new account and log back into your old account. Does iTunes launch and sync properly from inside there now? -
I bought my IPad 2 from a friend. I have reset to clear all of his information out. I am trying to connect it to my computer to sync my itunes and I keep getting the message that my IPad can't be used because Apple Mobile Device Service is not started can anyone help with this?
I cannot find "Other" devices. I found Apple Mobile Device under Universal Bus Controllers but cannot see "recovery mode" or any other status. I use Windows Vista.
When I try to restart Apple Mobile Device Service I get the following message: "The Apple Mobile Device Service on Local Computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs". What does this mean?
During the last 48 hours I was able to see my iPad in iTunes only one time during many attemnpts to connect . I haven't been able to see it during the llast several attempts.
Any suggestions? The standard suggestions have not worked: i.e. stop then start AMDS; tuurn off iPad and PC, then restart both and reconfrom iPad to PC; reload iTunes. -
Apple Mobile Device Service won't start or stop
I plugged my iphone in, and it said apple mobile device service is not started. So, I used the instructions on here and got to the services. However, when I right clicked AMD service, I was unable to click start, stop, pause, resume, restart, etc. So I went to properties and I was still unable to change anything; it was all blank and I couldn't click anything. I don't know how to fix this... Also, about 15 minutes before, it was working fine and my iphone showed up like normal, but then I installed the new apple software for itunes and that's when this all happened.
it tells me it cannot connect because Apple Mobile Device is not started, so I go to "services" and start it but it tells me it started and then stopped.
Do you have Megakey software installed on the PC? (Other folks have been reporting similar symptoms caused by a conflict with Megakey.) -
when trying to fix the ipod syncing/recognition by starting the AMD (apple mobile device) in admin tools section on my computer it came up with the message in the question aboce (the apple mobile device service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.)
i have restarted my comp etc and reinstalled itunes... recurrent issue.
note - i wiped my ipod before this issue occurred, does this affect the problem?I would start with
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
Next see the the other actions of the following concerning the AMD
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows -
On my registered iTunes computer, the following message appears every time one plugs in a device and refuses to load said device to be synced: "This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started". Each device has been registered onto this account and this computer, and all have worked finely in the past. I am so confused as to why now seemingly without reason, none of our apple devices (one iPod, two iPhones) are allowed to have music and other material downloaded onto them. Also, as a side note, they still are charged by plugging them into the computer, however they do not even show up on the left-hand sidebar in iTunes.
It should also be noted that for my iPhone it does not allow for the new update software to be uploaded; it just says that an error has occurred, nothing more.Try Here > AMDS > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows -
When I tried to sync my iphone 4 and ipad in iturnes, an error message popped up saying this device cannot be used because Apple Mobile Device service is not started! What does that mean and how do I start service? I've had these devices for over a year and update and sync regularly and have never seen this message before!
I got that message yesterday. I'm new at this so don't know if this is the correct solution but it worked for me. I reset my iPod by holding the 2 buttons down until the apple appears AND I restarted my computer. After that everything worked.

What does "the Apple Mobile Device service is not started" mean? I updated iTunes and I got this message when connecting my iPod Touch (2nd gen).
Never mind--I think I found the answer through other posts. Thanks!
