Apple mouse scrolling is too sensitive in Yosemite

I've use a wired USB Apple mouse with scroll ball (A1152) on my iMac 27", and since upgrading to Yosemite, the mouse scrolling has been way too sensitive and doesn't allow any fine adjustment of scrolling speed/acceleration in system preferences. In the Mouse preference pane, the 1st position on the Scrolling slider is way too slow–a full scroll of the bar down moves about 1/4 of a full webpage at native resolution with very slow acceleration. The 2nd slider position is not any faster than the 1st. The 3rd slider position accelerates way, way faster, and scrolls a distance of about 8 full pages using a moderate flick of the scroll ball. At this high sensitivity, I need to scroll fairly carefully to move only one page. In a finder window with 500 items, it accelerates fast enough to move from top of the list to the bottom with less than one full finger swipe of the ball at moderate speed. Any setting from 3-8 on the Scrolling slider is the same speed and acceleration and is way too fast to use in a well-controlled manner. The behavior system-wide and is the same in any browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome). This is nothing like how it behaved in OS X Lion through Mavericks over the past four years. Also, I can set the scrolling slide to the 3rd position, close system preferences, and go back in to find that it has set itself to the 2nd position, but the scrolling behavior is that of the 3rd position until I move the slider again.
I've trashed some .plist files from ~/Library/Preferences/ that I thought would reset things (com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist and others) upon logout/login, but the behavior persists. I've tried a few pieces of software to try to override mouse settings, and while they will affect the mouse tracking speed and acceleration, they don't work well at controlling the scroll speed. I've reset the PRAM and SMC. I've created a new user account. Nothing has allowed usable adjustment of scroll speed/acceleration of the Apple mouse.
Any suggestions on how I can regain in Yosemite the usable adjustment of scroll speed/acceleration that were in all previous OS versions would be appreciated.

Try setting the scroll wheel scaling manually, by running the following command in the Terminal and then logging out and then back in to re-load the settings:
defaults write -g com.apple.scrollwheel.scaling -float VALUE
In this case, try values of 1, 0.5, 0.25, etc, decreasing in half each time to see how the scroll wheel sensitivity responds, and then use the one that works best. Alternatively, you can use the system preferences to set the sensitivity to the two values you have used so far, followed by running the following command between each to see what the value is for each:
defaults read -g com.apple.scrollwheel.scaling
Then you can determine some intermediate value to use, and use the first command above to set it to that value (again followed by logging out and then back in so the value will load).

  • Apple Mouse Scroll Ball Not Working Since 10.7.4 Supplemental Update

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but my scroll ball on my Apple Mouse (wired) will no longer scroll upwards since applying the OS 10.7.4 Supplemental Update on the 1st June 2012.
I have a Mac Mini with a 27" Thunderbolt Display running 10.7.4. There are no software updates available and I have tried all the settings available in the system preferences.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mouse pad is too sensitive.

I have a HP G72-c55DX Notebook PC.  I can't find an option anywhere on mouse properties to adjusts the senstivitiy of my mousepad.  When I type letters, emails, etc., my hand must brush up against the mouse pad and change positions on the page I'm writing creating typing mistakes.  Very frustrating.  My previous HP models,or Windows had that option.  I have Windows 7 and can't find it.

Try this Freeware, touchpad pal. It automatically disables the touchpad while you are typing:

  • Logitech bluetooth mouse too sensitive

    Hello!
Well, I have a bluetooth, Logitech Notebook mouse. I'm not sure of the exact model number, but I believe it's the V270, as in this mouse:
    http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/downloads/software/US/EN,crid=1792,contentid=1 1016,osid=9
I linked to the driver "download" page - that is, if there was one. True, it works just fine with OS X's built in drivers, but it's way too fast. I have moved the mouse sensitivity to the second-to-lowest point in the OS X mouse prefs pane, but it's far too fast and imprecise. If I move it to the lowest point, it's far far too slow. WIthout a logitech driver, I'm kinda stuck between having a bluetooth mouse that's too sensitive, and a Microsoft USB mouse that's a bit uncomfortable (a bit too big). My Powerbook didn't come with a mouse.
Speaking of which, I have a PowerBook 15" 1.67 G4 model, running OS 10.4.8, with built in bluetooth. I have it sitting on top of my 3/4" inch thick desk - made out of particleboard - and the mouse on the tray just below. the mouse is less than a foot from the PowerBook's optical drive, to the lower right, so's probably not an issue with bad reception.
Does anyone have an idea of how to lower sensitivity? A third-party plugin? A terminal command? Automator? Something?
    Thanks a bunch,
    -Dan

    Woah, that was fast!
Yes, I've tried that download. It seems to be looking for a USB connection, such as one of those mice with a USB transmitter. It says "No Logitech Device Found"
    That's the problem.
Both Macupdate and the logitech site link to the same program, BTW.
I'll look into Steermouse and USB overdrive, but again, No USB connection at all, since it connects directly to the built-in-USB card.
    Thanks for the fast response,
    -Dan
Oooh! Look at that! It's snowing! Again! (sigh....)

  • Mouse scrolling problem

My iMac is around two years old, and I'm on my third mouse. Why? Because of the scrolling ball. The present mouse scrolls in all directions except down. But previous mouses have stopped scrolling in more than one direction. I have read articles (including the stuff from Apple Support), and I have, I think, tried just about everything (except take it apart, as one article instructed). The mice work fine for a while--then come the scrolling problems. I've tried rubbing the ball (mouse upside down) vigorously on a lint-free cloth, and I regularly (when problems inevitably arise) clean the ball with alcohol and a Q-tip. The latter does get the ball pretty clean, and it works for a while; but eventually even this doesn't correct the scrolling problem (as is the case right now). So, unless someone can give me a suggestion that might work (with Mighty Mouse), can anyone recommend a non-Apple mouse--something not too expensive but of good quality?
    Thank you,
    Carl Kalwaitis

Hi Carl, I used mice (Mighty included) but always went back to the trackball. You don't move your wrist and it is very precise. I have had the same trackball for three years and my Mighty Mouse (which came with my new iMac) is still in it's original packaging. I have a Logitech Marble Mouse. It has all the scrolling and other functions that the MM has. Give it a try and save yourself some exasperation.

  • Lion mouse scroll speed scrolling too fast

System Pref > Mouse > Scrolling Speed is set to the slowest level and it is still way too fast!  Heard others complaining about this on a Parallels discussion group and thought I would post here.  Incease the range of scrolling sensitivity in an update please!  Reply to this post if you are having the same issue.
Scrolling was always way to fast in leopard when using Iphoto, but this with Lion it is too fast everywhere else except for huge files.

I suppose you are using a non-Apple mouse. You will need to update the software, and adjust the tracking multiplier within the software.
Logitech just came out with an update for Lion.

  • Mouse too sensitive

My Apple wireless mouse is way too sensitve on scrolling, it always scroll when it is not mean to be. How can I disable it or make it less sensitive?
OS: Windows 7 on Boot Camp (running on iMAC)
    Thanks

I don't know about windows, but in OSX in system preferences/settings/mouse untick one finger scrolling. Two finger scrolling is much less sensitive - use that if you want to scroll from the mouse. Don't actually see the need - it's a mouse after all!

  • Mac mouse is too sensitive. Anyone know how to relax it?

Mac wireless mouse is too sensitive and jumps around ahead of me. Anyone know how to slow it down?

I had the same problem, with a new iMac: I was getting a lot of random scrolling, in the middle of editing work, and it was very annoying.
Contacted Apple and they told me to do an SMC (?) reset, which changed nothing.
I then realized that the problem was from an over-sensitive Magic Mouse. Many users seem to complain about this over-sensitivity, especially for newer computers.
So, a while ago, I took the following advice the website at the end of this post.
Control the touch-sensitive area of this mouse with the free app MagicPrefs (not clear why Apple does not provide something this useful):
download it from http://magicprefs.com/ and install
    then go to its Preferences
in the new window that opens, click on Configure Scrolling, at the bottom right
you will then see the sensitive area of your mouse
click and drag to reduce that area
I had found that especially touching the edges of the mouse start the random scrolling
so, I made the touch-sensitive area for scrolling very small, and in the top-middle of the mouse, about where the scroll-wheel would be on a normal mouse.
Hope this saves you all a lot of frustration.
P.S. I learned about MagicPrefs from one of these frustrated people

    Hi Malky H.,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your mouse is not scrolling in the direction you are expecting, check this Mouse setting in System Preferences:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Mouse.
Scroll direction: natural: Select this option to move the contents of a window in the same direction as your fingers.
You can find this information here:
OS X Yosemite: Use an Apple Magic Mouse
Note that these steps apply to previous versions of Mac OS X as well.

  • Mouse Too Sensitive in Fullscreen Apps

Normally on the XFCE4 desktop my mouse is perfect (using Synaptics driver on my Lenovo Ideapad S205) but if I open any fullscreen apps such as ScummVM, the mouse suddenly becomes incredibly sensitive and moves far too fast (and quite inaccurately too, making it hard to select some things as if the mouse is suddenly operating as a very low DPI).
This is just inside the app, if I leave the fullscreen program then the mouse if fine again.
Has anyone else experienced this before and does anyone know of a fix?

I would guess that it's a bug in SDL, and check the SDL bugzilla.
Also check the xorg bugzilla re synaptics bugs, 'cos Arch uses bleeding-edge xorg (I'm still on xorg-server 1.9.5 with patches pinched from Fedora and Mageia, because I found 1.10.x unstable).

  • Apple Mouse only scrolls in one direction after 10.6.8 update

I just updated to 10.6.8 security update, itunes and safari update (I think?) Can't remember now. The update was 10-4-11.
My Apple mouse now only scrolls in one direction. I thought is was dirty and it is not. There are posted issues with this safarie update with mouse related problems, however I am experiencing them in all programs.
Rebooted several times, re-cleaned mouse scroll ball, did the paper trick by cleaning. No success.
I can scroll down but not up. It forces me to grab the scroll bar and manually drag the scrolling window.
Again ALL programs. Was just fine right before the update. Now a problem after

  • Apple Mouse (mighty mouse?) Right clicks too often

I have the Apple Mouse (former Mighty Mouse) and I have right click turned on.  The mouse is constantly doing "right click" when I click left.  I look and my finger is well to the left of the little scroll wheel.
I thought "Oh maybe it's sensing the whole panel and I'm pushing in a funny angle" but no, I paid attention and  I was not.
I'm just wondering, is this a common problem with this mouse?   Or is my particular mouse defective?

I have a 2011 iMac and the batteries in my Magic Mouse need changing every couple of months.  In contrast, my wireless keyboard only needs a battery change every 10 months or so.  I bought an Apple battery charger and keep the spare set of batteries always charged.
I think that is the way it is - mouse uses more juice than keyboard (or gets more use so runs down faster).  However, if it gets worse than 2 weeks life, it may be time to invest in a new mouse.

  • Mouse too sensitive or driver problem?

I've noticed that for the past half year, my mouse buttons have been too sensitive. I'll attempt to singleclick, but it will register as a doubleclick.
Does it sound like my mouse is too sensitive (maybe because the contacts are dirty) or is something xorg wrong with the input drivers that would cause this to occur? I do know that there was a problem a while ago with jumpy/jittery mouse control, but that never happened to me.

Hi people. I'have this problem too with my Synaptics Touchpad. I've installed gsynaptics tool (Preferences->Touchpad) and selected "Tapping Time" to the shortest value with no effect apparently, it is still too damn sensitive.
Also, my xorg.conf is completely commented out! So I think everything is HAL-detected. Any ideas ?
