Apple Open Networks--Are they safe?

I had a personal network I was using to connect to the internet, until one day, that one was dropped and an open apple network took its place. I have no idea what/where this apple network came from or if it is safe to use. I cannot get back to using my own network no matter how hard i try.
it seems that the airport is using the apple network to connect to the internet and wants to use my personal network only as computer to computer network.
Are these apple networks safe, or should i call apple care to get my own network back?

Try the following if you use AirPort "Preferred Networks":
o System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
o Delete all the preferred networks.
o Run the Keychain Access utility (located in /Applications/Utilities).
o From within the utility, sort by the "Kind" field. Remove any keychain entries with the Kind of AirPort, and then exit the utility.
o Create a new preferred network for the wireless network you want to connect to.

What is usually done is that tcpwrapper (using /etc/hosts.deny and hosts.allow), or your firewall rules use of this service.
Why not all three options? On my server i have line for deny all in in hosts.deny and a deny rule in hosts.allow and a running firewall without opening the custom ports. It is only bad if you do nothing.-)
The issue is that portmap isnt' linked with tcpwrapper. Maybe it's a bug, I'll check it.
I see your report (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7096). The solution for it is easy and you can do this workaround until the package will be updated.

  • Xmp files - are they safe to delete

after I open a RAW file there is always a xmp file saved.  If I made changes to the RAW file, will there be any effects on my photos if I delete all of the xmp files.  I know that they are there to show the file information, but I just want to make sure that nothing will go wrong with my edited photos if I delete the xmp files.

The XMP files contain information about the last conversion you did on a particular raw file.  If you delete it your conversion parameters will revert to defaults next time you open the raw file, instead of Camera Raw using the last conversion parameters.
Go into Edit - Preferences - Camera Raw... and you'll see that you could choose to save the conversion parameters in a central database if you don't like the sidecar XMP files showing up.  If you DO choose the central database, consider upping the max size from the default of 1 GB.

  • The benefits of gigabit networking -- are they real?

I'm setting up a small network (like 10 machines) in the midst of a much larger corporate environment. Our IT corporate department wants these machines to be connected to their network, but has flat-out stated the network speed will be 100BT, not gigabit ethernet. Mostly because they presumably don't want to upgrade switches, repeaters, wiring and servers.
They claim that even with the intense graphics (ie, 500MB Photoshop files and big InDesign files) and HD video work (mostly Adobe Premiere) we'll be doing, 100BT will be adequate.
    Can that possibly be right?
I mean, if big graphics and HD video don't require true gigabit networking, what does?
My proposal, given our expected usage, is Cat6 cabling throughout, gigabit switches, 10,000RPM drives, and gigabit ethernet throughout. I hate to go to battle with the big corporate IT guys if I'm totally wrong, but aren't the benefits of true gigabit networking clearly obvious?
I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially as they pertain to real-world (not theoretical) speed improvements.

My experience is personal, not enterprise IT level, but I have gigabit between my Macs. I use it with Photoshop and video files stored on one Mac and edited on another. The throughput is so high it's almost like using a FireWire hard disk; I hardly notice I'm using networked files. I love gigabit, I love that almost every Mac has it.
I think you are right and your IT dept is wrong. First off, we all know specs are ideal and real world is lower. 100 megabits per second is just 12.5 megabytes per second...if the network is operating at its theoretical limit! Which it won't be. Let's be optimistic and say you'll get 10 megabytes per second. For graphics and video apps, that's horrible, worse than forcing you all to use external USB 2 drives. Of course you'd want gigabit Ethernet. I don't know what your IT dept is smoking. It's just 10 machines. I paid like $50 for my Gigabit switch, and the cables are cheap now.
Have you thought about running a test in front of them at file editing/saving performance between two machines comparing 10/100 and gigabit? It should be a cheap and easy test to run, and I would hope the results would be visibly obvious. I do not think you can expect to edit HD video over 10/100 without wanting to slit your own wrist at some point out of frustration.

When I try to install the newest Itunes, I get a message saying that it cannot find Itunes.msi.  I have that file in the Apple updates directory and I point to it.
After hitting enter, it comes back to the same question with the implication that I am not on the right network. I am not on any network. Please help

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Your profile indicates you have a MacBook Pro retina display.
That is an Intel Mac, not Power PC.
Neither the v10.4 nor the v10.3.9 willl run on a MacBook Pro retina.
Which OS X is installed on your Mac ?
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.

You should ask in the Mac Pro forum since that article does not really relate to the OS but to an issue between hardware and drivers.

  • Problems connecting to a Open Network via Wi-fi on Cisco Router

Hi everyone, I know I'm new here but I'm in need of your help, so if you can assist please do so as I cannot live without wi-fi and might have to go back to my nokia again if I can't sort this out.
Vodafone finally released the Iphone on their network in Ireland today and I've picked a 3gs up straight away.
At work I have a wi-fi network with a CISCO router (I have no access to the router as only IT do and they won't change anything to satisfy me and my Iphone anyways). This network has no encryption whatsoever and its free to join, you don't need any password or anything. My nokia at the start couldn't connect as it said that the network needed a pre shared key, this isn't true and in the end it was just change a setting to no auth required for it to log into the network and work perfectly.
Today I got to work and the Iphone can't connect to the network, just says it can't join the network. I cannot find anything about authentication on the settings of the phone nor can I work around this at all. I've had a Ipod touch for (the 2nd gen) for over 2 years and I gave up trying to set it up at work because I just couldn't find what was wrong with it, I ended up almost not using it other than when traveling or on the gym.
So first question is there any way I can access the authentication settings for wi-fi connections on the Iphone? Maybe its just a little change that is needed like the nokia.
Has anyone experienced this problem on a open network that they cannot join?
    Any other sugestions? Anything really?
Thank you very much for your time guys, I would really really appreciate your help on this.
    Regards,
    Rod
PS: I've also tried to install the Iphone configuration utility however I don't know how to access the profiles on the phone, anyone can help with this so I can try the profile I've created?
I don't think it is going to work because the options available on the configuration utility are basicly the same available on the Iphone itself.
Anyone has any sugestion on how to solve this problem??? Thanks very much.

  • All my photos have been imported to iPhoto library. Is it safe therefore to delete all photos in the Finder pictures folder? It seems crazy to have them duplicated (all are backed up externally). And are they full size images in iPhoto?

All my photos have been imported to iPhoto library. Is it safe therefore to delete all photos in the finder picture folder? It seems crazy to have them dupllcated ( all are backed up anyway). And are they the full sized images stored in iPhoto?

Assuming you have iPhoto set to the Default setting, then yes, your full sized photos are copied into the iPhoto Library and so you can delete your own stored in the Finder.
Easiest way to check:  Select a photo in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Is it stored within the iPhoto Library? You can tell easily in the Finder's column view.
    As an FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

I updated iOS 7 and my contacts were ok then they suddenly disappeared a few weeks after updating. I have no idea if it has anything to do with iOS 7 but when I email someone the contacts are there. When I open the app they are gone. What happened?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • "None of your preferred networks are available" But they are!

This is the one problem that most bugs me with my MBP, i was hoping that 10.5.2 would fix it, but it does not.
I use my MBP on two wireless networks. They are both airport expresses with different SSIDs.
The first (work) is one airport express and my MBP will connect to it when ever it is in range happily. The second (home) is an airport express with another airport express extending the first. The only one in range on my laptop is the extension. Every time I wake the laptop it will tell me that "None of your preferred networks are available" and show the name of my network in the list - it has the password stored and has been told to remember the network... and yet it still refuses to connect.
Clicking the network shows that it knows the password as it displays it. I have rest both airport expresses and made the network from scratch, I have also deleted all references to the network in keychain and airport preferences, and yet it still does it.
There are a couple of other threads on this topic, but none of them have been resolved (That i have found) and they seem to have a slightly different problem to me, so I have posted my own question.
Does anyone know what is wrong?
    Thanks.

I don't have the answer, I have the problem...
I'm also in one of the other threads about 10.5.2 messing up connection to my Apple Airport Extreme (melted marshmallow), but I also have the "None of your preferred networks are available" problem.
My network configuration looks like this: http://tijil.org/LAN_06.jpg
I have: Hard reset Airport, re-loaded firmware, re-done all settings, powered up and down numerous times, changed channels, etc. to no avail.
For me the Airport Base continues to work just fine with the other two computers connected to it wirelessly, but my 3 week old MacBook with 10.5.2 will no do so automatically, and once it does, even though the signal is strong and the S/N ratio is good, the connection is usually much slower than either of the other machines, has difficulty sustaining a large upload, and frequently drops out - for the MacBook only.
This did not happen with 10.5.0 or 10.5.1 and does not happen with the machines running 10.4.x.
The Airport Extreme Base is set to use 802.11b/g as one of the older machines can only handle 'b'...
I have MAC screening set up and also WAP. Network is NOT 'hidden.'
Airport Utility on the MacBook also has difficulty finding the base even when the MacBook is actually connected to it and using it to download mail. sigh
The problem is something that changed in 10.5.2.
Hope Apple gets this sorted soon!
    Tom

  • Emails are "stuck" in my Apple Mail Outbox. I have deleted the account and reinstalled but still have the problem. Apple's "Network Diagnostics" report that it cannot connect to the SMPT server.

Emails are l "stuck" in my Apple Mail Outbox. I have deleted the account and reinstalled but still have the problem. Apple's "Network Diagnostics" report that it cannot connect to the SMPT server. TalkTalk (Tiscali) say there is no problem with their server because I have checked and can send emails with their webmail.

    No that is not it:
Open Mail>Preferences>Accounts, the first page has this on it
If you click on the server name in the box (gmail in your case I assume) it opens and reveals this:
If you select Edit SMTP Server list you get this:
Post it here and, select the Advanced Tab (which looks like this)
