Apple original battery for the Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro

The original battery is failing on an Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,3), 2.3GHz - it has lasted 43 months according to coconutBattery. Often refuses to charge at all, holds about 6750mAh as compared to the original 8450mAh it could hold upon delivery. The battery has gone through 848 "loadcycles", not so far off from Apple's suggested 1,000 cycles, which I assume they meant should have taken place during the AppleCare period which ended 3 years after purchase = April 2011 - April 2014. The battery began having charging problems in June-July 2014, after 3 years and 3 months.
Have looked for a replacement battery and found many. What they have in common is they are (with one exception) not Apple, and specs differ from the original (the original specs taken from the battery the MBP was delivered with as new are 31CP90/44/89-2  Li-ion Polymer 10.95V 95.0Wh Model No. A1383).
An Apple certified service center in Stockholm Sweden offers an original Apple A1383 battery with identical specs, but: they only offer a 3-month guarantee! Even worse, they claim that they cannot discern the manufacturing date (or will not provide it).
I contacted OWC (macsales), have always been happy with their products and service and knowledge. They hold that they cannot offer this battery at all but that it should be available in the Apple Store, ie online. But we cannot find it there, one of the few models missing.
Probably a lot of people with an Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro 2.3GHz will be having this problem right around now. Has anyone found a great solution?

  • You can't upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive in the Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. It is not supported. Period.

I tried unsuccesfully to upgrade the hard drive in my Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro to a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive. After several attempts with different hard drives I realized that the kernel panic that showed up was due to the lack of compatibility with the drives to the MacBook Pro. I had a Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro that I did not have any issues with whatsoever. I sold that MacBook Pro and was able to upgrade to the brand new base model without any out of pocket cost. Upon purchase of the new 13" MBP I maxed out the RAM to the full 8GB. After 2 months of freezing, lockups, spinning rainbow wheels and having to force shutdown I tried one last ditch effort to see if a faster drive would help. After speaking with the Apple telephone reps and the Apple Store Genius Bar we discovered that Apple doesn't even offer the option of a 7200RPM drive on their website - a fact that I found quite disturbing. The concensus is that it is a power management issue that causes the incompatibility and the reason the drives are not offered on the 13" models. The problems I had were the end of the line for me. I just switched out that train wreck for the Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro base model. I got home and immediately installed the 750 GB 7200RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black hard drive and it was recognized within seconds. I'm back in business with gleeful abandon.

Sadly... they don't have all the answers. As someone who use to serve in the capacity (Mac Genius) it can definitely be a challenging position. You're "the voice" of Apple's service policy & procedures. Sounds like the person you spoke with got it wrong this time. It's definitely worth a follow up, because like I said, I've got a machine in my household that's living proof of compatibility between a 7200 RPM drive and 13" MBP (Early 2011).
Apple is very good about support documentation when there's incompatibility or unsupported configurations, the fact that there isn't one for 7200 RPM drives would tell me that the people/person you spoke with was misinformed.
I know I always appreciated when a customer made it known to me that I was wrong on something and supplied the right answer. I sure as heck don't have all the answers and if I can lead from my mistakes, well, I won't make them anymore.

  • Early 2011 2GHz Macbook pro distorted blue screen then wont boot, 3 times in last 2 weeks

I have an early 2011, 2GHz macbook pro (15' model with ati radeon graphics). It was running fine for the last two years. Over the last couple of weeks, following things happen:
    1. I was running on bootcamp windows, browsing and some flash content was open, suddenly distorted blue stripes appear and it froze. Force shut down using power button, turn on again and it wont boot on windows or mac, or recovery partition or from the dvd. Tried for about 4 hours, after nvram, pram reset, it was able to safe boot, then run disk utility to verify and repair the disk, it said that there were problems with hard drive and fixed, then booted normally.
    2. I thought that the problem might be because I was on windows, so took a back up of the windows drive, erased it and installed windows 8 using bootcamp. It ran well for an week. After that, once I connected it with the tv using HDMI to watch a video, after I disconnected it, the screen was garbled over the windows start screen, but I was able to command restart normally. After restart, it wont boot to windows or mac.
    3. After several hours of trying, i was able to boot using the dvd this time, it said it 'can not install mac on the hard drive', erased the hard drive and it was able to install the os (snow leopard). After completing install, logged in to app store to download previously purchased mountain lion. Then ran it to upgrade the os, after the upgrade was completed, at the point when it prompts for apple id and password to set up icloud, it again froze with distorted blue screen. Shut down forcefully. Then turn on again and it wont boot. After the white screen and the sound, it shows the apple logo and spinning wheel for a while, then a bright white screen and nothing happens.
Can anybody help reading the symptoms?

I have the Early 2011 2GHz Macbook Pro and I have the same problem too.
I switched out the logicboard a month ago and today the graphics just went distorted.
Any solutions? Now I'm thinking it is the Graphics Card.

Ok, so i bought a 16GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM for my late 2011 13" MacBook Pro whose memory runs at 1067 MHz (I was also told that late 2011 MBPs run at 1333MHz, is mine an exception, if so, why?)... Im looking for all possibilities to close the compatibility gap because computer freezes at boot and was wondering if there was anything i could do to get this 16GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM to work at 1067MHz or somehow get my computer to run at 1333MHz?...

You don't have a late 2011 MB Pro.
    You have a 2010 version.  Your MB doesn't support 16GB.  8GB Max.
That's what it shows on your about this MAC.
    You need to return the RAM and get 8GB ( 2 X 4GB ) 1066MHz.
Your system bus is set to 1066MHz.
You're having issues because you've installed more RAM than your MB can support.  It's only reading 4GB per bank which totals to 8GB and not 16GB.

  • Early 2011 15" Macbook pro fans full speed/unresponsive

I have an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro, running OSX 10.10.1 Yosemite. I can't say this problem started right after I upgraded to Yosemite, but it definitely did not happen before. Upon going to wake my computer up from sleep (whether the lid was open or closed - it has happened either way) the fans are running at full speed and the computer remains unresponsive to mouse clicks, keystrokes, hitting the power button once. I end up having to force a power off/on cycle. This does not happen every time the computer enters sleep. It most often happens after I have left it overnight but I have had it happen after only 30~ minutes of non-use.
    Any ideas?

    Hello Etherel90,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help with in this situation. You may want to consider performing a PRAM reset:
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
If your Mac doesn’t seem to be remembering your speaker volume, display resolution, or the disk it should be using during startup, you may need to reset your computer’s PRAM.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Important:    To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting your computer’s PRAM, you may need to update your speaker volume, display resolution, and startup disk preferences. For more information about PRAM, see the Apple Support article About NVRAM and PRAM.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    BobbyD

  • Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro Sata III

What does Negotiated Link Speed:          3 Gigabit mean when I have a sata III drive and connection?
I have an Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro and purchased a Corsair Force 3 120gb SSD to replace the HDD. It's all running fine (kind of). I have the latest firmware on the drive and all the updates for my mac. This drive is supposed to get around 500 MB/s r/w speed but because it is only being recognized at 3 Gigabit my speeds are being severely impacted.
Is there some way to force the drive into Sata III?

I have plugged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?
if the device I connected have caused this, shouldn't the macbook itself have some type of protection that should prevent this from happening.
because when I took it to an apple certified maintenance shop, the guy said that now it could only run while connected to the power. it won't run on batteries. and that I have to change the motherboard.
can I just replace the damaged part only, would apple consider this as a design issue and they could pay for it, or should I just buy a new motherboard for 800$.
    Help.

    BB1B2,
The problem is in finding a tech shop that will/can do board level repairs on Macs. They are few. And I certainly wouldn't spend $800 on a new logic board - I would replace the computer if I had to pay that much!
You could call around to a few repair shops and see if they feel competent to isolate the problem and do a board level repair - but I'm afraid, in the end, that your search will be futile.
    Sorry,

  • Want to install Windows 8 on my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro?

    Hi guys,
I am planning to install Windows 8 but unsure of a few things, particularly with the version I have to get.
I have an early 2011 13" MacBook Pro, running 10.9.3 and it has never had any previous versions of Windows on it before. Can I simply get the "upgrade" version (which is cheaper), or do I have to get the "full" version to do this? I can't seem to find the "full" version anywhere on the Microsoft website by the way...
I am looking at this: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/Windows-8-Pro-Upgrade---Stud ent-Offer/productID.272005100 (student price upgrade version)
Would I be able to install that in Bootcamp? And what sort of files do I get once I pay for and download it?
    Thanks for your help

You can only install the upgrade version if you already have a full version of Windows installed. In your case you will need to purchase the full version.
    Buy it on disk.

  • I'm looking for screws for the bottom of my macbook pro unibody.

I need screws for the bottom of my macbook pro unibody. They started falling out after I upgraded my RAM, apparently they had some type of threadlock on them. Apple was of little help and directed me to a an apple store or service center which is not convienent. So far, I've been only able to find the 'old' pack of 5 screws, not the pack of 10 that my mac requires. I did find one seller on ebay advertising them but would like to avoid that path if possible. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreaciated. Thanks

No this is not a common problem.  Have you had the bottom off before?
The factory set screws you see a bit if blue lock tight which makes it more difficult the first time out.
They can replace the screws over the counter at any authorized repair service or Genius bar:

my iPod was originally connect to an old HP. The HP has since died and now I own a Macbook pro. I want to transfer the music from my iPod (originally synced with the HP) to my Macbook Pro. Is this possible without losing the music on my iPod?

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • For the 2013 versions of macbook pro should I purchase 32 bit windows or 64 bit version to be able to install it on macbook and use windows with bootcamp?

for the 2013 versions of macbook pro should I purchase 32 bit windows or 64 bit version to be able to install it on macbook and use windows with bootcamp?

Then you might check at any of the other university book stores or software stores or any computer store in town for the 64-bit version.
If you want to use the 32-bit version from the school (you probably get it for free or very cheap) then you could purchase Parallels and run it as a virtual machine concurrently with OS X. There are some caveats:
    1. You have to purchase Parallels (there may be an academic discount.) List is $79.95.
    2. Your computer needs minimally 4 GBs of RAM, but realistically 8 GBs would be better.
    3. Parallels creates a pseudo-drive on your hard drive. It could easily require 50 GBs of disk space.
Accommodating these might be more costly than buying 64-bit Windows 7. And, if you look online you may find them with an academic discount (or may be able to order it through the school.)

  • EFI update for the mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro?

    Hi,
I was wondering if Apple enabled the Lion Internet Recovery feature for the Mid-2010 MacBook Pros in the new round of EFI updates released yesterday. I know that they already did this for the 13-inch weeks ago but I wanted to make sure they expanded support for the 15" inch and 17" inch model. My doubt arises from the fact that the EFI update is for the Early 2010 MacBook Pros which would technically be a Summer 2009 model, rather than the actual mid-2010 model which is the one that I have.
    Thanks for the clarification.

I would agree. Actually, I am contemplating this possibility if Lion keeps annoying me with a bug in Safari where it tires to sandbox the GPU and then, crashes the whole web browser and computer. This iisue keeps happening even with the newest version of Safari v5.1.3 and the last time I encountered this issue occurred in a clean install of Lion v10.7.3 while writing an email on my gmail. Honestly, even though I love Lion and its features; it does not measure up to Snow Leopard's pinnacle of stability and compatibility. Besides the freezing issues I have experienced I also had an issue where my Mac would hang at shutdown and hang with a gray pinwheel (although this issue occurred only if I used the Mac OS X v10.7.0 installer, it has not appeared when installing Lion via the 10.7.2 installer, I am not sure about if the issue resurfaced in the latest installer as I had a hung shutdown when Safari froze and tried to shutdown my Mac, ultimately showing the dreaded gray pinwheel). Let's see what my Mac is up to in the following weeks, so far everything looks Ok and in the multiple visits to the Apple Store I have run hardware diagnostics in my MacBook Pro and all of the gave a clean bill of health to my machine. I can't afford to have the 8th clean install of Lion, therefore the next time Lion fails I will revert to Snow Leopard in a heart beat.

  • Apple care protection for MBP early 2011

Apple care came with TechTool Deluxe but my early 2011 MBP came with Snow Leopard. Now that I have Lion, Tech Tool states that it has not been fully tested with Lion. Short of buying a new copy, is there a way to get Tech Tool for Lion?
    Thanks
    JAW

Well, I ran the progran anyway, TechTool that is and looked for updates within the program and it said I was running the latest version 3.1.3. I ran the program and it crashed. I was the crash test dummy.
