Apple Outreach to the Aging Community?

Hello,
My mother in law is an intellectually active 80 year old who is, although sharp and an avid reader, never the less extremely intimidated by technology.
My wife and I are concerned that she is becoming increasingly isolated by her age, the demands of caring for her husband, an the challenges
of getting around.
We think that getting her on line might significantly enrich and improve the quality of her life, as well as the life of her husband, but she has rebuffed our efforts to get her on line because the interfaces scare her, and I suspect that she doesn't want to be made to feel foolish.
Apple certainly was successful with their college and high school outreach program to get young people accustomed to the Apple environment, and has been successful at marketing Apple products as being more intuitive than their competitors, so it seems that Apple's emphasis on intuitive design would make Apple products particularly attractive to aging people.  The aging people cohort might even offer a good beta testing opportunity for Apple, but that's a larger question.
My mother in law and her husband live by themselves a considerable distance from family, so I was wondering whether Apple or any of the Apple Communities have ever mounted a geriatric outreach effort to introduce aging people to the Apple internet and communications environment.  If so, I would appreciate any information that anyone could offer in this regard.
I would also appreciate any information that anyone might be able to offer regarding any similar internet/computer outreach programs for the aging or geriatric communities offered by educational or research institutions, or social service organizations, particularly in the Atlanta, Georgia area, where my mother in law and her husband live.
I submit this query to the MacBook Air and iPad support communities, as I thought that the MacBook Air or iPad might be logical hardware platform for aging people due to their light weight and portability, but I am open to other suggestions.
Thanking you in advance,
Charlie

Is thre a Mac Users Group in your MIL's area? Some members will make housecalls to another member"s home to help with tech issues or instructions. Just a thought.

Those are big questions, from the specific to  univeral.
    1. Trying to hook someone up to technology who is 80 and is [still] intimidated by consumer computer technology... remember that the technology has been around since that person was in her 40s so there was never sufficient motivation to get her started.
You might take an activity she enjoys daily,  solitaire or crosswords can be done in a different and perhaps more convenient form.   If she is a reader, show her a Kindle or iPad reader app. Then feed her other stuff. Everyone here will have different  suggestions to hook someone.
The trick is getting her motivated to adopt it herself: "what's in it for me?" * is her unspoken question and will be your guiding light.
    2. Regarding geriatric outreach, try searching for government or university sites regarding access to senior citizens. e.g.
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  ipad site:gov or
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  health site:gov
"senior citizens"  "internet access"  Kindle readers site:gov
Or do same for state or county or government library programs. Libraries have preached and practiced community outreach for years.  Best wishes.
"what's in it for me?" is also the question on the part of tech industry and your "geriatrics" audience.
Answer that and you will have built a better mousetrap.

Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro?  From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended.  But how/where?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance

I have bought my daughter an iPad mini and I've tried to set it all up for her and get her an apple account so she can download games and music but it keeps saying she doesn't meet the age restriction. How can I set this up for her as she has an iPod and would like to access music from iTunes ect.

There are age restrictions for an Apple ID. These are in place for a good reason. Simply set it up to use your iTunes account/Apple ID for purchases. If you don't have one, create one.

I don't know of there is anyone than can fix this age old Apple problem.   Does anyone know how to retrieve apps under an old Apple ID when the email used for that account no longer exists & I can't remember the password? After speaking with Apple Acct. Security, I got the security Q right but my birthday was wrong! They wanted the serial number from my phone that was 3 iPhones ago! Seriously??!!
Any updated way to work around this? No Apple people can correct it.
    Thanks,
    Joe

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.

  • I get an error message when trying to sign into the support community with another Apple id. On the pick a username screen I get "an account utilizing this address already exists...." despite trying a few usernames. Anyone know how I can resolve this?

I get an error message when trying to sign into the support community with another Apple id. On the <pick a username> screen I get "an account utilizing this address already exists.Only one account per email address is allowed on the Apple Support Communities" despite trying a few usernames. Anyone know how I can resolve this?

This problem has been driving me demented. The instructions that Ivan gives have partially worked for me. By following his link
"How to find out if you have multiple Apple IDs" I was able to identify that yes I did have two apple accounts using the same e mail address. One was very old that I used to use for the forum boards and one is my much more recent ID that I use for everything these days. So I changed the e mail address for the old account which is associated with these discussion boards and that's the account that I am now posting this from. However even though the two accounts now have different e mail addresses when I try to log onto the boards with my more recent main apple ID I still get all the same errors as described at the start of this thread by rodgers_j. And of course that's the one I want to use so that I only have one itunes account for everything.
So if anyone has any more hints I'd be very grateful.

  • How do I change the age restriction on downloading apps on my apple I'd?

I am trying to change the age restriction on downloading apps but I do not know where to find this setting. Can anyone help please?

    Hi Aaron Lytle,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you were setting up Family Sharing, but did not get to  enter the correct birth date for your child's Apple ID. As mentioned below, a child's birth date cannot be changed once entered, and you'll need to create a new account with the correct birthday.
Family Sharing and Apple IDs for kids - Apple Support
Enter your child's birthday and click Next. The birthday for a child's account can't be changed after the account is created.
    Best Regards,

  • Can't set up a new Apple ID b/c it says I do not meet the age requirement.  (I am 36)

I can' set up a new Apple ID.  The message says that I do not meet the age requirement.  I am 36 but the first time I went through set up, I accidentally put the wrong birth year making me 6.  Now I am stuck.

    Cara,
If those email addresses are already in use somewhere else, you can get new email addresses for your kids.  You can do this via your ISP, or by one of the free email services such as hotmail, yahoo, or gmail.

  • Why apple does not help the scientific community?

I see that everybody are asking the same question about the ability of writing superscript or subscript in word processors on ipad.
The real question should be why such an expensive device does not meet the student and specially the scientific community. None of the program's used in ipad supports these most important features for any student. And I thin the reason would be the so itself since none of the program's have this feature. Therefore everyone just have to come up with different tricks to do the job that it should be so easy.

You are not talking to Apple here, just users.

  • How can I change the age associated with my daughter's account?

OK I am sure that this is a common issue.  Back when my daughter was about 9 or 10 years old, we bought her an iPod Touch.   She was too young to have an AppleID of her own, so I set one up for her using an extra gmail accoun that I had, and entered my birthdate/age.  A few years later, she received an iPad, and most recently, an iPhone.   All of these devices are tied to the same AppleID.
Well, now she will be 13 years old soon, and I would like to switch things to represent reality.  She has her own email account, and I believe you can go to My Apple Id to change the Apple ID name and e-mail address.  My question is, can we change the age associated with the account?
I hear you saying, "Just create a new AppleID for her."  That may end up being the only solution, but I am trying to avoid having two AppleIDs for her to keep up with.  She has already purchased a fair amount of content (music and apps) under the existing AppleID, and I am pretty sure from looking at the posts on this Community that you can not transfer content away from the AppleID under which it was downloaded/purchased.  And so, if I create a new AppleID, she will have to re-purchase the content to get it all in one place.  As she eventually grows up and becomes independent, I would like for he to not have to "start over" with her AppleID.
Any advice or direction to information would be appreciated.

I have a similar situation however a bit more complicated! It seems that when I was setting the birthdate I forgot to change the year so now my seven years old daughter shows up as a two months old! There is no way to change the birthdate because it shows up in light grey when I login into my daughters account and doesn't allow a change! The birthdate can be changed only when the child turns 13 however according to this she will have to be 20 before she can change it to show property 13 and here is where this is getting completely out of hand! Now to make things more complicated I have twin daughters and they came up with their unique but similar Apple ID, so changing one will require to change both Apple IDs! After being on the phone with Apple's customer support for about one hour I talked to a supervisor and the supervisor of the supervisor and their only solution is to create a new Apple ID! Of course in my case I will have to create two new Apple IDs, and I'm considering doing it. However when I started reading it becomes more complicated because I already made their Apple IDs part of my family group. It seems like you're not able to just let go of family member that is less than 13 years of age. You can only transfer it to another family, so Apple is making sure there are no kids left behind It seems like the only option will be to "abandon" the family and then create a new family with the new Apple IDs. If all this sounds bizarre to you it sounds bizarre to me too! If I can just put the kids in the car and drive them to the nearest one hour away Apple Store and have them show their credentials confirming their birthdate I would rather do that than having to spend more and more time with this issue, but that was not an option pointed out by customer support. So folks keep in mind that if you make a mistake your children's age is set in stone until he or she turns 20 if they happen to be seven at the time you made the mistake and no one can change this, even Apple! Now on the positive side I'm glad I didn't do the mistake when she was 13 or she will have to wait until she's 26 Most likely I'll be calling customer support tomorrow again and I will let you know how it went!

  • At the age of 11, should i buy a Iphone 5 or a Ipad 2?

I am at the age of 10. Soon i will become 11 and my dad promised me that he would get me a Iphone or whatever. First, i did want a Iphone but now to think of it, i am also kind of interested, especially the Ipad 2. And now, i cant decide which one i want for my B'day. That why i was wondering if maybe people could give me some ideas on what to buy. Here are some Pro's and cons about the Ipad and Iphone:
    Pro's on Ipad:
    Its got a big screen
You can do lots of things on it
    you can engrave on it
Its a bit cheaper then the Iphone 5.
    Cons of Ipad:
It is very big to carry round
    you cant call on it
    you cant text on it
It hasnt got as many things that you can do on Iphone
    Pros of Iphone:
    It's well put together
You can do lots and lots of things on it
It's faster then Ipad even though it is much thinner and smaller
you can easily use it with 1 hand
I can technically take it anywhere i want.
    Cons of Iphone:
It is kind of more expensive then the Ipad
It could break quite easily if it fell on the floor as it is very thin
As you can see, i have got more Pro's on the Iphone then the Ipad and less cons on the Iphone then on the Ipad. My parents think that i should get a Ipad but i am not sure. As you can see, im stuck now. Please help me out and write your ideas in the answer box. Thank you

Neither! You should go for the iPad mini instead. Seeing that you're barely turning 11, the size should give you enough screen estate. It's better than an iPad2 in terms of specs and plus it's then both!
But to be honest, you're still too young to be carrying anything that's more than $50 dollars in value. However, seeing that you're only ten yet able to log in the Apple Support Community and post something that is fairly well written and thought out (with bullet points!), I guess you're capable of taking care of such a device.
Enjoy your birthday and your present (whatever it may happen to be)!

I have an IPad mini and I changed the Apple ID and the password almost one year ago and, for a while, a message asking me to sign in to ICloud pops- up constantly. My ICloud account is registered with an old email address and password. I do not remember the password to my ICloud account, and ID address that my ICloud account is registered under is an old email adress which is deleted right now (the old mail account is deleted). I don’t have a rescue email adress and I don’t know the answers to the security questions, so I have no way of changing the ICloud password. A message asking me to sign in to ICloud pops up constantly, but I always just hit cancel. However, now I am unable to access Find My IPad. How do I get my ICloud account changed and registered to be under my current Apple ID (email) and password? It is possible to set the device as New Ipad?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact Apple ID Support, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.
