Apple please provide way to disable Edge but enable WiFi

I am planning a trip outside the US. I have read the posts about people who spend a week abroad and come back to an outrageous AT&T bill because of the international Edge usage charges (sometimes even incidental). I called AT&T and yes they have an international data plan but for a 1 week trip I would have to pay $25/month for a year or pay a huge cancellation fee. Another attempt to gouge their customers. So that is not an option. How can I use the wireless on my phone without using edge?? Airplane mode turns off both. There is no way to enable only wifi. How can I do something as simple as check for messages without edge? How can I safely use just wifi at the hotel or other hotspots? I don't want to have to leave my phone in airplane mode for a week but until apple provides a way to disable edge while enabling wifi I most likely will have to.

After updating to 10.4.4, I can no longer connect to our XServe 10.3.8 server.
I have had other problems with updates as well on other computers.
It would be nice if Apple could borrow a feature from Windows XP that lets users rollback to previous configurations. Or simply provide an uninstaller. Or some easy way of removing the update. Microsoft 1, Apple 0. Not that I like Microsoft, but Apple needs to do something about this.
This has been very annoying having to wait for an update to fix an update.
I have done all of the required permission fixes and this is a brand new G5 so there shouldn't be any corrupted files.

The problem was not with the XServe or Keychain access. It was the update used in the software update service. Since I was going from 10.4.3. to 10.4.4, I didn't think I would need the combo update. Guess I was wrong to download the smaller file. I downloaded and installed the full Combo update and now it is seeing the XServe shared points.
Now back to the uninstall feature: My System X folder is 1GB. Surely that whole folder would not need to be cloned to uninstall a 55MB file. What about creating a temp file the holds only the files changed?
The problem with backups (especially if it is a server) is that new files are constantly created and would be lost if a restore needed to be done. That would be fine for a home user with only one Mac, but how many home users even have a backup system? It would take a long time to backup an 80GB drive to .Mac.
If an option was made available as a checkbox that asks the user..."Do you want to save the current state or configuration?" and then tell how much space it would take up. This file could then be deleted later in the Software update System Preference. Software Update should also have an option to "just download" or "download and install". Right now it immediately installs after downloading. What about an option to automatically download new updates. Install them when you choose. This would save time waiting for the downloads before installing. Again, Microsoft already has this feature.
Another feature I would like to see in the update process is...If repairing permissions needs to be done before installing, why doesn't the installer automatically do this during the install? The general public doesn't know to do this anyway.
I could go on and on about stuff I would like to see in OS X but I think I covered it for this topic.

Duplicate Song sol'n w/o losing playlists? Apple please provide feedback.

Will this work?
1. Export playlists to Desktop.
2. Delete all songs from iTunes library.
3. Re-import all songs to iTunes library.
4. Import playlists.
In doing 1-4, I think I can successfully delete all duplicates and maintain my playlists, however, I am hesitant to try it without comfirmation.
Please confirm!

You don't specify what kind of duplicates you are trying to get rid of.
If it appears that the same exact file is appearing twice in iTunes, or a copy of the same song file appears twice (e.g. "song.mp3" and "song 1.mp3", then you can use a program I wrote to delete duplicates. Download the zip here:

Extract the EXE and run it, then select "itunesremoveduplicates" from the menu. When asked, select the Library playlist (option 1).

Obvisously Apple doesn't care about G5 dual-core owners. Can't buy an upgrade video card. Spent $3000.00+ on a system with a graphics card designed for budget PC's. Someone at Apple should fire the engineers that suggested this card in the system. I would of bought the 7800 GT had it been available at time of purchase. What a crock of crap leaving us hanging with no upgrade options. Aperature runs like *** with this card. Apple get off your lazy ***** and do something about this crap. Show us you care.

Edge but no wifi, although 1st time, it worked

Okay guys & girls,
this is the real and ultimate wifi issue:
My iphone 1.1.4 only connects via edge.
When I go to settings -> wifi, I can connect with all the networks I usually also can connect with my mac. At home at work and so on.
Now don't tell me to go and check if I've typed the password correctly, because there isn't any. I can connect in the iphones settings menu (the network is checked, so it's not about 802.11?-Standards) but when I return to the home screen, the wifi icon is missing.
Even more confusing is the fact that at the very first start up of my phone, I was able to make AND MAINTAIN the wifi connectionwith my home network.
Oh, and one other maybe important thing. My phone's jailbreaked. But I don't think this can be the reason, or is it.

I can only give the suggestions I would give to anybody else in this situation, however, when you jailbreak your iPhone you are modifying your iPhone's software in a way that is not intended by Apple, and as any programmer can tell you that can lead to unexpected results.
If you go to Settings -> WiFi -> and tap on the > next to your network are you getting valid IP address, Router address, and DNS entries? (IP addresses starting with 169.x.x.x are not valid in this context).
Have you tried restarting the router?
Have you tried forgetting the network and rejoining it?
Have you tried reseting the iPhone?

Internet connection with GPRS/EDGE, but no WiFi and NOT on a Blackberry supported network

New 8900 owner here. Living in Vietnam at the moment...and I have a prepaid plan that includes GPRS. It always worked fine with prior devices, so I am confident in the service.
First issue:
I don't think the provider offically supports BES traffic...so I may have to swtich. Is anyone aware of a way around this? (don't want to change my phone number)
Second issue:
For just basic web browsing...I want to use my GPRS connection. The phones shows it connected via the service provider. But, when I launch the web browser it says this requires a WiFi connection. Why would that be?
Any help is really appreciated!

For the second issue.
you have to change the browser settings as follows.
Options --> Advanced Options --> Browser
then change the Default Browser configuration to internet browser or WAP browser.

-apps shut down on me while i use them
-battery life (apple says) lasts for 48 hours. for me it lasts 2 hours

-terrible background choices (kinda lame, but still)
-apps are neon (ick)

-safari ***** (as usual) with its search bar functioning as web address search as well
-mail badge says i hate not read mail when i have
-passcode can be surpassed
-game center push notifications will not go away
-will not sync with my mac

I'm sorry, but Apple does not provide a downgrade path for iOS. Because downgrading is unsupported by Apple we cannot discuss it on these forums.

Disable EDGE alternative to calling ATT or removing SIM

Another way to disable EDGE (and all phone service) for international travel without calling ATT and without removing the SIM is to set a SIM PIN. When you turn your phone off and back on, you will get a message that says "SIM LOCKED" with 2 options. To use your phone, select "UNLOCK" and enter your PIN; to disable your phone, select "OK", the SIM will remain locked, but all non-SIM functions work, including Wi-Fi.

So, if I understand this, when the sim is locked, you can't make phone calls but if you can connect to a free wifi network (maybe from a hotel or the airport), you should still be able to check email, yes?
If the SIM is locked, can you still use the SMS functionality?
I'm traveling to Namibia in about two weeks (thru France and South Africa) and have contacted ATT several times about disabling edge (the right hand definitely doesn't know what the left hand is saying) so this might be an alternative so I don't come back to one of those horrific phone bills with my IPhone.

I visit a web site that all of a sudden after the "upgrade" I can use flash on, it throws up the flash has crashed message when it really hasn't (IT is a singing site and the flash program scans for your microphone, webcam, etc..and FF throws up the message on the scan)
I know flash isn't crashing because it DOES work (Same Flash plug-in) with other browsers and has worked fine with FF until the upgrade

Is there a way to disable "hide others"?

I often have tons of apps open and if I accidentally hit "hide others" instead of "hide (app)" it makes me crazy. I hate having to "show all" then hide them one at a time. I know I could use the keyboard command, but it's different in some apps (Photoshop).

On both devices, go to Settings>Facetime and turn off cellular calls.

Try here first > Apple ID: "This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons" alert appears
If you can't resolve the issue on your own, call Apple or schedule a call > Apple - Support - Solutions
