Apple PMU Forced shutdown message

I just purchased a used Quicksilver 2002 model. Been having some intermittent power shutoff problems (kernel message asking to press power button for several seconds until shutdown), also some kernel issues with a Griffin PowerMate knob (which has since been unplugged)- it has shut down 4 times in the last 20 minutes. System log reports this all 4 times:
Dec 31 18:00:34 localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122
Two of the four times, I was installing some software; the other two times it was just sitting there, running nothing but the OS. Interesting that all other time stamps in the system log showed the correct date and time, but this one above is off. Could this be the PMU battery (you know, that little battery that plugs into the motherboard)?

Actually, Patrick, the last four times it has shut down today, it didn't prompt me to shut it down via the power button- it simply blinked off. When it has done that, the message stored in the Console is different from the kind that occurs when a kernel panic happens. The kernel panic log does indeed tell me what hardware might be giving it fits- but that hardware has since been left unplugged. This log entry is different- not associated with any hardware, just the PMU message as mentioned above (there's also no mention of the PMU when I get the kernel panic screen).
The note about testing the memory is a good one though- I'll have to try that. I still tend to think that it is a heat issue or a bad Power Supply- but I can't say for sure yet.
Alas, I can't run the Apple Hardware Test disk- I didn't get any disks with this used machine. I have other AHT disks for other Macs I own, but they're not compatible.

  • Forced Shutdown

I have an iBook G4, running Mac OSX Tiger and its been shutting itself off whilst it's asleep. I'm pretty sure that it's not down to the battery as it's been fully charged. In the System Events Log in the System profiler it records 'ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -127'. I've searched and I can't find any record of this cause or what it means. Does anyone have any idea?

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Although I could find any reference to the .127, the PMU reference would be the Power Management Unit.
    Try resetting the PMU:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • ApplePMU Forced shutdown

    Hi Guys,
I am experiencing another problem with my powerbook, it keeps turning off unexpectedly. There is no warning, just a 'click' then the unit is dead.
I have looked in the Console and found eight log entries that read:
    'Jan 1 01:00:31 localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -110'
and one with the error code '-2'
Does anyone know what the 110 code means...? I have the powerbook booked in for service at a ASP in two weeks time (to try and replace the screen!!!), i need the powerbook for a theatre performance next week.
another thing to add to the list!
    Many thanks!!!
    Regards, Meady

    Thanks Ned.
I tried reseting the PMU and P/NVRAM and the PB was fine for a few days. Today i went to power the unit up (on battery) and the sleep light glowed then went out. I tried again and still no joy. Then i plugged in the power adapter and the unit started straight away.
The only thing now is when i unplug the power cord the unit dies. The battery meeter on the battery itself shows full and the icon in the top right shows '94% -(Calculating...)'.
    Ahhh!
The date and time keep reseting when i turn the PB off, so I'm guessing the main battery and the backup are dead, or something in the PB.
There are more of these -110 faults now in the console.
Many thanks for your help so far,
    Meady

  • ApplePMU forced shutdown -122

My XServe is frequently rebooting and now I found an error code in the system.log
    localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122
I've found in other forums that people believe this is related to the UPS or the power strip. Can someone confirm this to be true?

    johnnykapalua-
Are you able to monitor this XServe remotely? I am curious as to whether or not it is running warm.
Combined with your -122 error, it certainly sounds like a power supply issue, but the PMU can force a shutdown for a variety of reasons. Sometimes opening the unit up and blowing out all of the dust will help if it is a heat issue.
    Luck-

I keep getting the following message on my phone "Sorry!  The application Email (processcom.andriod.email) has stopped unexpectedly.  Please try again"  and there is a force shutdown button, which I push but keep getting the message.  Any ideas how to make it go away so I can get my emails?

Have you installed any applications recently?  A task killer maybe?  You can try rebooting the phone and see if that helps.

  • Ipad won't respond to forced shutdown...spinning between battery icon and apple icon and flashing home screen

ipad wont respond to forced shutdown...spins between battery icon and apple icon and short flashes of the home screen

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

Wait for advice on repairing a damaged filesystem.  Forceshutdown stops processs in mid-stream and leaves some parts not-valid.
Do not proceed until you get that avice.

  • Mini has had two forced shutdowns

Mini has had two forced shutdowns in as many weeks.
This is where you have the transparent falling curtain on your screen saying that an error has a occurred and the mini needs to be shutdown.
On both I sent the error report to Apple and of course don't expect any response from them.
On the second incident I copied the report to text edit so that I could post it here and hopefully get an idea from someone a whole lot smarter than me as to what might be happening.
One other piece of info, on restart I opened iStat to see what the cpu temperature was thinking that overheating might be the issue. It reported 130 deg F. It currently reports 126 deg F.
Here is the error report. Hope someone can scan it and give me a clue.
    Thank you.

  • She is dead, kaput and deceased after force shutdown

often i have the cannot wake up from sleep problem.
usually i disconnect power and battery to force shutdown.
this time now the computer is dead, deceased, kaput....
absolutely nothing when pressing start button.
power supply is ok, battery is ok.
    have reset PMU.
has something been killed by disconnecting power while in sleep?
    anyone had the same problem.
    oh.....................
and the optical drive will not eject discs,
it tries to, then just ***** them back in and re-mounts them.

    only edited..whewwwwwww!!!.................
not completely removed, so i am getting closer to acceptable language.
what am i allowed to say?
    is stating facts ok?
    let's try.
    ============================================
    FACTS:
history, my last 3 apple laptops:
    1. This machine. Keyboard failed (replaced under warranty)
Optical drive will not eject a disk (all "fixes" don't work).
airport and sound periodically "not found"
    Flaky USB port.
    Logic board dead.
    2. powerbook G4. Replaced screen, replaced logic board, replaced optical drive.
    3. iBook 500. eventually replaced screen under recall program, for a very long time apple denied the problem for my serial number.
could you have any faith in apple products after this sequence?
    =========================================================================
i am australian, i am traveling and working on websites from Thailand.
all my work is on the hard drive of course.
so when i get the machine back i have to open it up,
take out the hard drive and mount it in a box then transfer my data to my windows laptop (cost one third of the macbook and is quite reliable).
    what fun...........................
    =================================================================
    FACTS:
i have bought many apple computers over the last 14 odd years.
my first was a mac IIvx with 100MB hard drive and 4 MB RAM.
if there was a viable alternative for me i change brands immediately.
    (...........censored by me............)
the last reliable apple laptop i had was powerbook G3 400 some years ago,
it ran for 2 years without a problem,
since then there has been constant faults in basic components.
    ========================================================
as a customer, apple should love me and send me xmas presents since i have spent so much money on their computers over the years.
in reality they (.. censored by me .........)
i hear on the news today they have made a profit this year,
    (.. censored by me .........)
all i want is a computer that works reliably.
    over to you apple,
    i am waiting.........................................................

  • Serious Error shutdown message while exporting media

I am encountering an odd error message (from which I have never seen) when trying to export a project from Premiere Pro CC.
The error message (Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project) shuts down Premiere about 11-25% into the export. If I remove all effects on the media, the file exports fine, but will not if the effects remain on the media.
I have checked the permissions (as per Adobe forum advice), and they all allow me to read and write files, so that is not the issue. I have also restarted my computer, uninstalled / reinstalled Premiere, and tried rendering in different outputs, none of  which have worked.
I also have the error code, but am unaware of how to attach it to this question.
    Set up:
    Late 2012 iMac
    Mac OSX 10.9.2
    3.9 GHz Intel Core i7
    8GB memory
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB
    Premiere Pro CC
    Using H2.64 in .MP4 files
    Installed Plug ins:
Red Giant Magic Bullet Color Suite (used DeNoiser II in media)
Has anyone any clue as to what I should do/try next?
    Thanks for any input,
    Michael

I apologize about the length, but I am unaware of how to attach the error
code, so I am just going to past them.

  • IPAD: Forced Shutdown During Update. iPad No Longer Working! Help?

I did a force shutdown during the latest ios6 bug fix update and now my ipad will not work at all. iTunes does not reckognise the device when I connect it to my pc via usb. I have tried everything I can think of to have it start but with no success. It just keeps displaying the Apple logo, then flickering, then showing some text data in white, then goes to a blank black screen, then the logo and all over again. It does shutdown but cannot do a startup to the swipe lock page.
It would be hard to believe one could fully kill an ipad so quickly and easily. Please tell me that this is a fixable problem! Any way to get it to start again?
    Thanks!
    Manahen

You will need to restore your iPad to factory from recovery mode and connecting to your computer. Connect your iPad to your computer and hold the home and power button down for 15 to 30 seconds until you see the silver apple. Once you see the silver apple let go of the power button but keep holdng the home button until you see the itunes logo and white usb cord. At this point you should be able to restore in itunes.

  • I force shutdown my MacBook Pro and when I reopened my laptop, my files and apps are all gone.

I force shutdown my MacBook Pro by pressing the shutdown button for a long time and when I reopened my laptop, my files and apps are all gone.
When I reopened my laptop, it said that some files have been deleted or hidden (I don't know if it said hidden, I don't remember). my dock and wallpaper were set back to default.
This isn't my first time force shutting my MacbookPro.
How can I restore/recover back my stuff?
i heard time machine restores your stuff back.
And please don't tell me to go to apple because I have made an appointment with them but I'm still worried.
Please if you know anything about this please tell me anything you know.
    Please help me.

Given that you sound a nervous wreck and a neophyte in matters Mac, it would be safest that you put the Mac away, go take a chill pill, grab a bite, get some rest. Then take the Mac to its scheduled appointment with Destiny, er, the Apple Genius.
There's a good possibility of data loss and munging around unknowing, following instructions that will probably be hard to grasp will only increase the amount of damage.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I keep getting a forced shutdown and then my mac sends a panic report

my Macbook pro has the lion OS.  I have Kaspersky internet security.  My mac book pro started acting slow a couple of months ago.  Thats why I loaded the Kaspersky to it.  It keeps doing a forced shutdown when I am online.  I can be just reading news on Yahoo and go to shut down Safari and a screen comes down like someone was pulling a curtain down over the viewing screen.  It tells me to hold the power button down until the computer shuts down. I can't do anything else until I shut it down. everything freezes up. When I power back up,  it says that a kext releasing a surface root has corrupted the registry.
This only seems to happen when I am online.
What can I do to make this stop? I have contacted apple 3 times on this and they have tried to help by deleting files and emptying trash and it still continues.  Ofcorse, it doesn't happen when I am on the phone with the Apple Tech.  Just like my old car. Lol!

I want to give an update on my issue.
I deleted my internet security from my Mac Pro and it started acting normal again.  It seems that it was the Kaspersky internet security that was causing the problem.  After contacting Kaspersky, The agent told me that they were having issues with their older software and he had me download the newest updated security.  I'm not quite sure about their answer because updates were installed on a regular basis.     Anyway,  I will see if this works any better and if not,  I won't hesitate to delete the software from my computer.  I hope that this will help someone elce.  "Thank You Melophage for your help."

  • Help iMac w/Lion. Virus/malware Safari can't shutdown. Got pop up saying I won a prize. Did not select OK. Have to force shutdown. On restart of Safari get same pop up. Locks up Safari. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PiCked up a virus/malware please help me get rid of it. While browsing with Safari got pop up saying I won a prize. Click OK to find out what I won. Did not click Ok, but cannot close Safari without using forced shutdown. Powering down computer and restarting then selecting Safari brings up same prize window. Just installed Trend Microsoftware for Mac. It's scanning now. Don't think it will work.
If I open another on same iMac everything seems ok.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I am also running Lion and had the same problem: a persistent popup on top of a half-opened Safari window saying that I had won a prize and should click OK to claim it.  If I forced Safari to quit, the same pages and popup menu would appear when I then reopened Safari.  From what I can tell, the problem results simply from the fact that Safari in Lion defaults to auto-reopening web pages that were open when Safari last quit, including those suspicious pages that may have prompted the user to force-quit Safari in the first place.  I solved the problem this way:
    (1)  After force-quitting Safari, I went to my user Library folder and found the Saved Application State folder within.  I then found the folder for Safari (com.apple.Safari.savedState), opened it and deleted its contents.  Now the next time I open Safari, there will be no pages to auto-reopen.
    (2)  Since this problem could happen again, I decided to disable the auto-reopen feature in Safari.  I did this by highlighting the "com.apple.Safari.savedState" file and choosing the File-->Get Info command, and then in the Get Info box, I turned on the Locked checkbox.  This prevents Safari from adding any files to this folder.
This solution has worked well for me, and it has the advantage of not requiring the user to reset Safari.  It also preserves Lion's auto-reopen feature for all other applications.
I need to give credit to David Pogue for the information I used to solve this problem.  He describes this procedure on page 169 of his book, Mac OSX Lion, the missing manual.
