Apple Power Macintosh G4/400 Reboot problem

I recently got a Apple Power Macintosh G4/400 running OS X 10.3.9 - just updated via Software update.
My problem is that the machine will not do a reboot after booting up and running for a while (doing some activity, such as software update, etc).
Upon reboot, the screen will flicker, it appears to go through some amount of POST, but ultimately nothing. I cannot power it down with the power button -- instead I pull the plug.
I can then boot the machine up after a short while (ie, leaving the machine off) -- no problem. But if I try to reboot again -- no luck.
Any assistance or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

The funny thing is, the G4 boots up without issue -- when it has been left powered-down for a few minutes.
I tried an experiment -- I pulled the battery and booted the machine. No problem booting! I then inserted my Tiger disc and attempted the reboot to install the new OS.
Still would not reboot -- I get the "bong" but the screen just continuously flashes and nothing happens.
I got to thinking maybe it is the battery and it boots fine after leaving it for a while because maybe it gains some power back or something.
So I powered down again -- still the battery is out and has been out for a good while. I then insert the power plug, hit the button and it boots up no problem. I then open the case, and attempt the Tiger upgrade again -- click reboot button.
This time when it powers off I quickly push the battery back in hoping it would reboot with a "fresh" battery. But -- no reboot. Same issue/symptoms.
Thanks for answering.

You need an Airport Bluetooth module with the required runway card.
    Here is the kit:

  • Apple Power Macintosh G4 1.25 DP (FW 800)

Hey guys, I need some help. I have an old Power Macintosh G4 1.25 DP (FW 800) and I want to know what I can do, if anything, to upgrade it to it's max capability? It already has a new ram stick (512mb stick), but I want to see if I can bump up it more. It would help to know what modern computer parts still work with it.

  • Power Mac G4 400 Startup Problem

Working on my brother's system. He ran software update and rebooted and now we get the grey screen with the apple logo and the counter icon, then the starting Mac OS X screen, the progress bar gets to about the half way point then the screen alternates between being totally blue and briefly flashing the round counter icon.
I've tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM, booting to OS boot DVD and running Disk Utility - nothing has worked. Although it did boot to the DVD with no problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Tom, welcome, it is always a good idea to Repair Permissions before and after updates.
Bootup from the install CD (C key held down) and once the disk mounts (X window) open Disk Utility from the Main Menu under Installer. Choose your drive in the left column then select First Aid, now run the Repair, if it does not repair run it again. Now select the startup volume (with the OS) and run the Repair Permissions, quit Disk Utility.
Now go back up to the Main Menu under Install/Change Startup Disk and select your startup volume then Restart.
    Repair Permissions.

    HEY GUYS
Is there a PCIe wirelesscard that will work with this lovely machine?

    Hi-
PCIe wireless adapters are pretty well limited to Intel Macs.
For PPC Macs (PCIe) they seem to be non-existent.
    USB adapters are more common.
There are a couple of 802.11n options here:

  • Need keyboard shortcuts for an old Power Macintosh please

    Hi all
I’m try to copy 2 folders from the desktop of an old Apple Power Macintosh to a ZIP drive.
The mouse on the Power Mac doesn't work, so I’ve to use keyboard shortcuts to move the folders.
My problem is that I can’t find the right keyboard map on the web for a computer about 15 years old, and the OSX keyboard shortcuts don’t work on this computer.
As far as I can work out the Power mac is before G3 and is a 6000 to 8000 model. If anyone knows the shortcut to find the exact software version, that will be great.
So could anybody please suggest to me the keyboard shortcuts for the following commands:
    Open ZIP dive folder
    Move back to desktop
    Copy folder on the desktop
    Select ZIP drive folder
Past the folder from desktop to ZIP drive.
I can’t find any info on the web, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Under Mac OS 8 or later, you can select a file or folder in the current window (or on the desktop if no windows are open) by typing the first few letters of its name. You can also use the arrow keys. I don't remember whether these work in System 7.
Apple-O opens a selected file or folder. Apple-W closes the current window.
Apple-C and Apple-V are copy and paste, respectively, but I'm not sure if they'll work for copying files and folders. I'm not sure if there's a keyboard shortcut for moving files and folders.
If you can find "Script Editor" (it might be in a folder named "Applescript"), you could use it to write a script that will move the folders. Follow these instructions:
Find and open Script Editor. Apple-F opens the "Find" window.
In Script Editor, enter the following:
(Instead of XYZ and ABC, enter the names of the folders you want to copy. And instead of MyZIP, enter the name of the Zip disk.)
    tell application "Finder"
duplicate folder "XYZ" of desktop to disk "MyZIP"
duplicate folder "ABC" of desktop to disk "MyZIP"
    end tell
Press Apple-R. That should copy the folders to the Zip disk.

  • Power Macintosh G3 (beige)   Desktop Mac OS X  Monitor problem

I am trying to use a Power Macintosh G3 desktop (beige) that has been unused for about 8 years now. When I first turned it on all was fine, but in subsequent boot ups the monitor has failed to come on. The green light on the monitor flashes. I can hear the operating system booting up but I can also hear a rather ugly sound - which I think has been described as like smashing glass. The happens once when I first boot up.
I would assume it is a problem with the monitor - but am not sure of this smashing glass sound and what that means. If I do have to replace or try a different monitor - are there issues in connecting etc - I presume I will have easy access only to a more recent monitor.
    thanks
    sp1952

What kind of monitor are you using and how is it connected? Some older Apple monitors with the ADB pass-though (for plugging the keyboard and mouse to the monitor when the CPU is tucked under the desk) would not allow resolution changes unless the ABD connection was used.
The Beige G3 will always boot to 640x480 res and then change to your desired setting only after the users prefs load. That also means that, with a dead PRAM battery, it's going to reset to 640x480. If the monitor can't support this res, then you get black.
Try a PRAM reset. Find the "CUDA Reset button" using this logic board diagram:
    http://macgurus.com/products/motherboards/mbppcg3mini.php
Press and hold it for 20-30 seconds to clear all the contents of RPRAM. New factory defaults will load into PRAM on the next boot. A weak/dying battery can lead to corrupted PRAM contents, and the CUDA reset is your new best friend for dealing with such nonsense.

  • Reboot problem when OC the 975X Power Up

I don't want to break any OC record, only want to reach 3 Ghz, but without rebooting problems. Is there a BIOS version that fixed this problem ???. I am currently using the latest (7.3A), and despite now I can set the memory in 1:1 mode (with 7.2 I can't), when I set the FSB to 333 the reboot problem arise. In fact the reboot problem occurs when I set the FSB higher than 310-315 mhz. At 3 Ghz the board is rock solid and run all test, and even the memory at 667 mhz perform equal than 777 mhz (310 * 2 * 1.25). I have to note that the voltages are all stock, and C1E and speedstep are enabled (at 2.8 Ghz works great), do you have any suggestion with this items ??

Quote from: DragonFury on 06-January-07, 22:50:44
memory compatability . i tried 3 different sets of memory ranging from 533 - 800 mhz ( what the board supports ) the samsung 533 5,5,5,15 reboot issues , Ocz 667 5,5,5,15 no reboot issues up to 400 fsb ( its when i break 400 + is when i need to safe mode the bios ) but this is memory getting pushed to hard . and crucial 800 4,4,4,12 reboot issue but the mb remembers my fsb beyond 400 + fsb ( no safe moding the bios on a shut down ) but because of the compatability issue with the crucial i cant break 400 fsb because it wont hold it . the ocz i can do 430 easily . again here we are . is it mb manu , chip set manu , or mem ? me i am goin towards Memory manufacturers because it is there job to make sure there chips work on multiple platforms and keep up with the times . the only thing we can do too help  is contact the memory manufacturers tell them our problems rma our current memory and hope they listen to us .... again ITS NOT MSI fault that memory wasnt cut for a peticular chipset they use .
After reading at many forums it seems to me that the memory problems with 975x/965 chipsets are widespread across all motherboard makers. I don't know if the AMD platform is having many problems with high perfomance DDR2 memory, but at the intel side is a nightmare, and I believe is worst with the 975x than 965.
What model is your OCZ memory ??, Value Pro or Gold ??, if Value Pro, has the copper heatspreader or XTC heatspreader ?? (as mine and not even OCZ support can identify...). I am very curious because with it you don't have the reboot problem, and I do have  >:(

  • Power Macintosh 4400/200 (7220) – No video output

    Hi guys
In my collection, I've got a "mutant mac", a Power Macintosh 4400/200 and I'd like to bring it back to life again!
The owner wanted to throw it away, so I got it (with mouse and keyboard) and the same day, I also saved a boxed Power Mac G4 AGP 350 Mhz from being recycled...
Well, the problem: No video output at all! As I don't have any old Apple CRTs (yet ;–)   ), I tried 5 other CRTs with a DB-15 to VGA adapter (tried all possible resolutions). The CRTs lights don't even get green when I connect it to the 4400.
But I think that it still boots (start up gong, hard drive seems to be working). I've done PRAM-reset several times...
    So:
    1. Adapter dead?
    2. VRAM dead?
    3. PRAM battery dead? But that wouldn't affect the graphics, I guess...
    Where would you start?
    Thx a lot!
    Nicolas (from Switzerland)

    Hi!
The previous owner already got it with the problem some years ago... and it is possible, but I'm not sure, that the guy who gave it to him already got it with the problem too ^^ Well...
I've noticed something: When I press the start button (not holding it like for a forced shut down) when it is running, it immediately shuts down... normal? Or does it depend on the OS?
The VRAM seems clean, but the RAM... not corroded, but maybe it could need some cleaning... I'll do that (and some research about the model).
I think it's still original (not upgraded).

can you help my apple power mac g5 desktop is truning its self off when ever i try openning a page.or going online.it had recently been updated with os x 10.5.8

    Hello,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Hi all, I've been having computer crashing/rebooting problems when I play 3d games since I got this board. It can happen between 1-40 minutes during a game session and when the computer crashes, the screen would garble up and reboot along with the garbled screen until I cold boot it. I thought it was a heat problem at first but the cpu heat displays at between 34C-39C. Also, when I tried switching out the video card with an older one, the computer works fine during gameplay, and my newer video card ran fine on a friend's computer. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

  • Power Macintosh 7200 to Mac Mini back up and secure wipe question

Hi all, nearly figured this on my own but hope that someone here can fill in the gaps.
I have a clunky old 7200/75/16 (no upgrade card, bog standard machine) I want to sell/give/dump.
Before that, I need to back up the 500 MB HDD (hard to believe that was big once, now looking at a 500 GB HDD for the new machine!) and then secure wipe it.
I've learned that I can get halfway there with a crossover cable and Apple Talk. So far, so good.
Now, how about the secure wipe? I've had a look but I've not had any success in finding a how-to.
I have a feeling I can't use Disk Utility in Leopard for this, but maybe I am wrong.
Advice is sought from anyone here that can share their expertise on the best way to go.
A cheap/free solution (that doesn't destroy the machine) would be welcomed!
If relevant: I don't have the installer floppies for the 7200. I unwisely bought the machine without them but vaguely recall from an earlier Macintosh that Disk First Aid had some kind of format facility though I doubt it was far from secure by today's standards. I figure I can find a set of installer disks on eBay to get the 7200 operational again once I've completed this chore...

I've learned that I can get halfway there with a crossover cable and Apple Talk.
File sharing via AppleTalk cannot be used with the most modern operating systems. You should be able to use TCP/IP. A third-party program may be of interest. Also, see this article for some general information.
Now, how about the secure wipe?
One could use Drive Setup (a 1.7.3 version is available for download) for this. Under the Functions menu you will find Initialization Options, where "Zero all data" can be chosen. However, the program has to run from another disk (such as a bootable floppy). It is possible to create and modify a startup floppy on the 7200.
A third-party application such as Wipe Info (part of Norton Utilities, commercial) or Burn 2.5 (freeware) could be used, too.
If relevant: I don't have the installer floppies for the 7200.
The Disk Tools PPC (here) is one thinkable startup floppy for the Power Macintosh computer in question. If necessary, a complete System 7.5.3 (e.g., the International English version here) can be downloaded from Apple.

  • Change from an older Power Macintosh 7200/90 to a new iMac or  Mac Pro

On my Power Macintosh 7200/90 using Mac OS 8.0 I have stored a lot of very sensitive data which I cannot afford to loose. My machine works very good at this moment, however, I want to buy a new one like an iMac or a Mac Pro with the new generation of . Of course, I use a very powerful backup-program with an external hard drive and a Retrospect-backup program. Nevertheless, I want to further use my Office suite and other useful programs like i.e. the retrospect-software.
    My questions now:
-- Is it possible to buy a new Mac and clone/mirrow everything from the old machine to the new one except the Operating System ?
-- Is there any store close to Koblenz, Germany who is knowledgeable enough to provide this service for me provided I buy a new Mac ?

    Accessing Backup data:
Your 7200/90 uses SCSI drives, so an external drive is likely to be a SCSI drive. A newer Mac that can accept a PCI SCSI card would be required to read backup data directly off a SCSI drive. A MacBook would NOT be able to do this easily.
According to this article, Retrospect 6.1.138 supports Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. So it appears that there is a way to restore your backup data using Retrospect:
    http://kb.dantz.com/display/2n/articleDirect/index.asp?aid=9628&r=0.6172602
This site and this article may also be available in German or French.
    Accessing the original data:
    • If your WLAN Base Station has an available RJ-45 Ethernet port, you can add the 7200 to your existing Network and use Apple File Sharing to copy the files to your newer Mac.
    • Shared Disks and Directories appear as a Hard Drive Icon on the Desktop of the Mac initiating the Sharing, and can be copied using the Finder Drag and Drop.
    • Apple File Sharing works on Macs from System 7.5.3 through the current version of Mac OS X. To Share with Macs running 7.5.3 through 8.6, you must start File Sharing at the Older Mac.
    • The software for File Sharing is included with Mac OS, and may already be installed.

  • Apple USB Ethernet Adapter after reboot

    Hello everyone,
We have a group of 3 or 4 MBAs that are showing this same issue. Whenever we reboot we need to unplug and then replug in the ethernet adapter in order for it to connect to the network. This same problem is seen regardless of the adapter being plugged directly into the computer or through a USB hub.
It also happens when we "undock" and then dock back in from the USB hub.
Has anyone else see this issue? Have you found a solution?

    Yes, Yes and NO!
What's worse is sometimes you get full 100Meg/Full Duplex and even Bonjour services, then for no reason it connects at 10base half duplex and NO BONJOUR.
I'm convinced it's the USB-Ethernet adaptor, as I get the same problem using it with a MacBook Pro, at first it works great, then you restart and it looses Bonjour and sometimes you can see all the Bonjour enabled devices drop off the Shared list in the Finder.
I've had this problem ever since I started using the MB AIr (Late 2010) model.
I don't think Apple are bothered about fixing the problem, as they seem to assume all MB Air users are on Wireless (which also has it's problems)
It remains to be seen if Lion fixes it or they just give up and go to ThunderBolt on the next generation MB Airs with a suitable Gigabit adaptor.
