Apple Printer FAQs gone

The Apple Printer FAQ documents, links that previously appeared on the Older Apple Printers page have been lost. These documents included a sketch of ports available on many Apple printers, and the suggested cables and Mac OS 9 and earlier suggested drivers.
I found this information and its easy availability very useful in helping users find ways to hook their older Apple printers to both new and old Macs, iBook/PowerBooks, and Airport networks.

It seems that many of the old FAQss have been put into the "User Tips Library". I don't know if the ones you want are there, but there are many there about printing.
I don't know this, but my understanding is that FAQs will be restored to individual forums at some point. There is an announcement in the AppleWorks forum that says:

  • CD DVD print size is missing from Apple print menu options

    Hi all,
I wonder if anyone has this same problem I'm trying to fix. Thanks for you input, is much appreciated.
When I bought my Canon Pixma MG 5350 that can print over blank printable CD or DVD, there was an option to choose the CD / DVD size. You could even choose to print 120 or 80 mm sizes. But after a while when I went back to print a DVD, those sizes were gone for good and there was only one size labeled something like "Disk tray G" (my system is not in English so it can be different for you).
I tried it although I didn't know how would this succeed if I had to print a small DVD and it failed. A portion of the DVD was not printed and left blank because the DVD position was moved away from the real tray size, so there was this portion not printed in the DVD but printed over the tray plastic!
I reseted the printer configuration, tried to update it and everything possible but CD / DVD sizes are just gone. I can print using the Canon software, however I'd like to use Apple printer dialog as I'd like to print from Photoshop, Illustrator, Pages etc. directly. My solution now is to export an image and print using the Canon software but this is not how it worked before.
I contacted Canon about this and they are "investigating" this. As the problem is in the generic print options in the System maybe this can be a driver problem or a change. It happens in both an iMac and a Macbook with OSX 10.9.4, everything is updated and working normally. Printer has the latest firmware and software and I reseted the print configuration in the Mac, also reseted the printer to factory defaults, etc.
Does this happen to anyone trying to print CD / DVD from the System print options? Thank you.

As far as I know, you can only print CD/DVD's on Canon's MG and MX series from Canon's Easy PhotoPrint or Image Garden applications. I've never seen a way to print from non-Canon applications. So I would say that what you are experiencing is specification and I would be interested to read if Canon came back to you with a solution.

  • Photobook Cancelled by Apple Printer

I just discovered that my photobooks I give every year for Christmas has been cancelled. I sent the books in on December 13, before the Christmas cut off date. They were cancelled because they had too many orders to to send out by the delivery date so they cancelled them They are offering a 15% discount.
I only discovered it because I logged into my account to see if they had shipped. You might want to check your orders.

Nancy N, I just got the small month names email too (evening of December 18! Ha!).
There is a phone number for Apple Print Services?
The phone number I called was 800-676-2775, which is the Apple Store Customer Service number. Initially I spoke to a customer service adviser, who contacted someone in Print Services. They couldn't identify a problem or even knew what the "small month names" error was. Eventually they tossed me over to someone in iPhoto tech support and finally after I'd had enough (the call lasted 90 minutes) they transferred me back to a supervisor in Print Services.
The supervisor reviewed the calendar page by page and claimed that he had found the problem...that one of the "mini months" (where the prior and next months appear at the bottom of the page) had a font size about four times too large and it was cut off. The problem is, I'd saved the PDF preview of my upload and that preview looked perfectly normal. We guessed that something had gone amiss during the upload, even though I'd received no upload errors. The Print Services supervisor stayed on the line while I re-uploaded the calendar a second time without making a single change. He then reviewed it once it was received and this time, everything appeared normal. Because I'd expressed disappointment that I wouldn't have this by Christmas, they knocked 50% off the price and expedited the shipping. I doubt it will arrive by Christmas, but at least I know what the problem was and that I wasn't crazy and had done everything correctly. Any potential "fixes" suggested here and in other threads about switching themes back and forth would have had no effect on this issue.

Not printing text only on Canon--grahics print ok.  Not printer problem.  Prints ok on a Brother and another network Apple prints ok on Canon.  Believe a computer setting was inadvertently reset.  What setting and how do I reset?

Without your printer model numbers, readers can only give you vague general directions.
    System Preferences > Print&Fax > ...
... shows a list of all set-up printers.
If you are having serious problems, it makes sense to "Reset the Printing System" (which also removes all printer set-ups) and add back each printer. It only takes a few minutes.

For future books you might consider doing what I do:  create a separate library for each book andcopy the photos for the book from your working library to the book library with iPhoto Library Manager.
When the book is completed and ordered burn the library package to a CD, DVD or external HD to archive it so it's available for editing and reordering at a later date if needed.

  • Can I Scan to editable text on HP Officejet Pro 8620 using the Apple Printer Driver 3.0?

Can I Scan to editable text on HP Officejet Pro 8620 using the Apple Printer Driver 3.0?
I had a very difficult time getting my new HP Officejet Pro 8620 functioning as well as it does now.  I just tried scanning something as editable text for the first time and it ended up being scanned as a pdf.  At one point in my various tries there was a note on the printer screen that I did not have the HP OCR software installed.
This may be because the resolution to my installation problems with the HP Officejet Pro 8620 seems to have been reverting to operating with the HP-Apple Printer Drivers 3.0 package instead of the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg installation package.
I do not, therefore, have the HP Scan application on my computer now which is where HP says its OCR software can be found.
So what I'm afraid of is that I'm now running well with the HP-Apple driver but if I do go back and install the HP Officejet Pro v12.32.0 driver software with the HP installer, in order to access the OCR softwware in HP Scan application, I'll mess up everything else.
Is there any chance that the HP-Apple Printer Drivers 3.0 package I have installed also includes OCR software?  If so where can I find instructions for activating it and using it with the HP 8620's scanner?
Or can I only get OCR capability with the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg package?
Any experience with this?  Should I leave well enough alone?  Or can I somehow install the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg package without messing up my current functionality?
    Thanks
    Steve

The printer driver that is installed automatically from Apple doesn't scan. The scanner part can be accessed through Image Capture, but I don't think that does any OCR on the scan. You'd need a separate program. As you noted, many of the bundled software programs have OCR built-in (albeit limited). From my experience, that is only activated when you scan to "searchable" PDF or something similar. You would then have to extract the text from the PDF.
I don't have an HP printer/scanner, so take this all with a grain of salt.
If you can just install the Scanner utilities, that shouldn't affect the printer portion.
Your other option would be to purchase separate OCR software. Unless you need to scan lots of documents into text, you should further investigate installing the HP scan utilities.

  • Apple printed someone else's pictures in my book

Has anyone seen this happen? After carefully assemblying your book, and creating a pdf file to triple check it, Apple prints a book that mixes someone else's order with your own? This is what happened to me. My printed book starts with someone else's pictures and text, followed by the pictures I ordered... And not just that, but the picture pages stick together to the point where they rip when we turn the pages. What do you all think Apple should do about that?

I have been going at it with Apple now for over a month! I ordered a book and it came back with blank pages and with photos not scaled properly. I sent three emails via the iPhoto support page and received no replies. As you stated they promise a response within 48 hrs. Then some two weeks later they had the nerve to send me a survey thanking me for using the web support function and please rate "how we did!" You can only imagine how I responded. I next tried contacting a live person at Apple Care to help me out. I provided them my order number. They indicated that that was not a correct number. Turns out that Apple Care cannot track orders made through iPhoto! No one at Apple Care was even familiar with what an iPhoto book was. I then called Apple corporate hq's and spoke to a "customer care" rep. She assured me I would be contacted within 48 hrs (sound familiar) and my problem would be resolved. I heard nothing for over a week. Calls back to Ms. Graser of customer care were met by voice mail. Finally this week I recieved a canned response back from Apple. They noted that they would credit the charge back to my card. They also asked if I were interested in reordering my book and if so they would "assist" me. I replied that I was interested in trying to reorder the book. So what does Apple do? Without any further contact to find out why the book came back incomplete, they reorder the same %&*#'d up book and recharge my credit card for the full amount (including $15 for express shipping)!
If I were you I would contact my credit card company ASAP. Dispute the charge and they will remove it from your account. My card company did just that without any hesitation.
BUYER BEWARE! Apple provides no support or quality control for this product. DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Good luck!

I want to use Apple print to print a SQUARE format book - using Aperture.  How?

I want to use Apple print to print a SQUARE format book - using Aperture.  How?
Not with Aperture. You have to use the new Photos for Mac, if you want to print a square book with Apple's Print services.
You could collect  the images you want in the book in an album, export the albums a s a new Aperture library, open the album Photos, and create your book.
Or create a custom book in aperture, print the pages of the book to JPEG, import the jpegs to Photos and use them as full page photos to create a photo book in Photos.

  • Setting aperture & apple printing services

    Hello
I am working in Aperture and plan to order a book (my first one !) from Apple printing services and still have questions about monitor calibration... I want to be sure I do the thing properly in order to get the right results :
    - Should I calibrate the monitor using the gamma 1,8 (mac) or gamma 2,2 (most commonly used) ? From what I read, experts and professionals recommends gamma 2,2 but will it works when ordering book from Apple when the mac world is using a 1,8 gamma (or is it taken into account automatically when ordering books ?)
    - Apart from choosing the calibrated profile in System Preferences / Monitors / colors is there anything else to do in Aperture to work on the picture and order a book which photos will look the same ? I presume it would be good to select a proofing profile like Adobe RGB (1998) to work on the photos ? Which one is best to use for ordering books from the apple printing service ?
    Thanks !

    Hello Kenneth,
    Thanks for the quick feedback
Indeed I had read this article before posting on the forum, and this one get me even more confused. Gamma 2,2 is recommended, but I am wandering if it is the right choice when ordering prints from Apple, when we know that Apple products are using gamma 1,8 ???
Concerning the proofing profile I found this article : http://www.apple.com/support/photoservices/preparation_tips/ : it is written that when ordering prints, "the image should be in RGB mode, not CMYK." So I would conclude that I should use a RGB setting for the Proofing profile, right ? The thing is I see 2 RGB profile type : Adobe RGB and sRGB. In that case which one to use for proofing in order to check my work before ordering the book ?
    Thanks !

  • While printing from word appl. printer after each line puts in number of page,

while printing from word appl. printer after each line puts in number of page, so I do not print 3 pages but 5 instead. What to do?

What printer models is this intended for?  I assume it is aimed at the lower end inkjets, with the suggestion of loading 10-25 sheets of paper.

  • For Apple printing what is the per letter size page cost?

For Apple printing what is the per letter size page cost?

Again, what are you wanting to print?

  • Aperture or apple printing?

Has anyone had problems with having apple print off a photo book with part of the cover cut off when you have previewed it in aperture and it was all there when you sent it off to be printed?

Hi. Issues with Airport Printing can try this following Troubleshooting steps.
1). Make sure the printer prints when directly connected to the computer.
2). Delete any printer you have in Print & Fax pane in System Preferences now.
3). Connect the printer back to the Airport Base Station.
4). Check if the printer is recognized in Airport Utility ( HD/Applications/Utilities/Airport Utility).
5). Add the Airport connected Printer in Print & Fax pane under System Preferences. And make sure the location should say the Airport Base Station name while adding.
    6). Try printing.
    Hopefully this should work.
