Apple ProRes - which version based on these edit requirements?

Hi, first and foremost I do understand that the whole 'ProRes 422 vs ProRes 422(HQ)' debate has been covered many times in the past, so apologies in advance for digging this up once again! I've been reading up on this over the past week or so and I can't find any definitive answers specific to my issue, so I thought it was best to post it up on here.
I'm due to commence editing a short drama film soon which upon completion will feature on the festival circuit throughout next year, with a potential TV broadcast in the works too. We shot the film predominantly on a Canon5DmkIII and an FS700. I will be editing the project in FCP7.
My question here is that I'm a little unsure as to which codec to transcode the rushes to for the edit...all of the footage was shot 'flat' which means I'll need to do some extensive colour grading in post, as well as additional sharpening and denoising (Neat). Normally for my day-to-day editing which consists of mainly straight to web content I would transcode everything to ProRes422 or 422LT, which is obviously more than good enough when delivering the work online. Once again I'm considering converting everything to the standard ProRes422 codec, but due to the amount of grading/post work that needs performing and the fact that the film will be shown on potentially a cinema screen and on TV I'm wondering if converting to 422HQ is worth considering here based on the edit requirements and final output?
I mention the HQ codec in relation to its data/bit rate; meaning that as HQ has a higher data rate than the standard ProRes codec there's more 'head room' for retaining quality & detail after rendering the footage out and then exporting? Apologies if I'm wrong in thinking that but that's pretty much my enquiry in a nutshell there. I understand that converting to HQ initially will not give you a better quality file than the standard 422 codec (overkill in most cases), I'm just wondering if HQ (or any other codec for that matter) will retain it's quality better after some potentially heavy grading & filtering vs. codecs such as ProRes422. Storage space and render times are not a problem here, but I would only convert to a codec such as HQ if I know it's going to be worth it in the long run.
Any help/advice on this would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Alex

Unless you shot 12-bit RAW footage with the FS700 there's no reason to go to ProRes422 HQ. Your 5D mkIII footage (and probably the FS700 as well) is 8-bit and the standard ProRes 422 codec is 10-bit. Irrespective of how much work you do in Color (or the color grading system of your choice) the source will still be 8-bit, so 'headroom' is pretty much pointless.
hope this helps

I checked in dba_user and do not find owf_mgr in it so I created owf_user and grant himexecute any procedure and a role owb_user.

  • HT2213 No clear table telling you which version of Restoration CD is required

There is no clear table telling you which mode Mac required which version of Restoration CD. I have an iMac9,1 and I've looked at each version of Restoration CD and not one has the model iMac9,1. Apple needs to post a table like this article says.
    Article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213 clearly says:
"Compare the model information to the list on the download page in order to choose the correct Restoration CD image to download for your computer."
yet there is no list. You need to select each version of the Restoration CD to see if your comptuer uses this version. That said again I could not find which version was for iMac9,1

First hit from a google search for mac computer builds. Getting the right terms helps. Simpler is better.
The search for firmware updates mac yields three KB docs:
    support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
    support.apple.com/kb/HT1395
    support.apple.com/kb/HT1557
Those should give you what you're looking for.

  • I need to upgrade but don't know which version I have to get.  Do I have to go through each lower version or can I go straight to 10.8 then get free MAverick upgrade?  I live FAR from Apple store, so download upgrade is preferred.  :)

Need a newer version of Os to run printer and software.  Confused if I need to get which version to be able to upgrade to MAverick for free.  Also, need something I can download since Apple store is far away.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X. For detailed information see this user tip:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271 )
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is still available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Before installation you should back up all your data.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes (you will need the latest version in order to synch with mobile devices).
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

and isnt ipad supposedly locked to at&t and verizon????

They aren't locked in this edition for worldwide use. However I don't believe you can use an AT&T on Verizon and vice versa. If you have CDMA service you will need the Verizon iPad.

I have upgraded Apple Aperture from version 2 to version 3 and I'm having a problem with the "Highlights and Shadows" adjustment. According to the user's manual, I should have access to an advanced disclosure triangle which would allow me to adjust mid contrast, colour, radius, high tonal width and low tonal width.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to access this advanced section, I'd be most grateful.

    Hi David-
The advanced adjustments in the Highlights & Shadows tool were combined into the "Mid Contrast" slider in Aperture 3.3 and later. If you have any images in your library that were processed in a version of Aperture before 3.3, there will be an Upgrade button in the Highlights & Shadows tool in the upper right, and the controls you asked about under the Advanced section. Clicking the Upgrade button will re-render the photo using the new version of Highlights & Shadows, and the Advanced section will be replaced with the new Mid Contrast slider. With the new version from 3.3 you probably don't need the Advanced slider, but if you want to use the older version you can download it from this page:

  • Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder  - Both types say I have "a newer version installed", but I can't view Pro-Res files on either type of machine.

I'm trying to view a Pro-Res file from Final Cut Pro on machines that have Quicktime Pro, but having no luck.  I've tried installing the "
Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder " for both Windows and Mac (on the correct machines), but I keep getting "You already have a newer version of this installed" on each machine, and can't finish.  Needless to say, the Pro-Res file will not play on either machine, and there seems to be no way to remove a "newer version" and install this one.  Thanks for any suggestions.

    Rob,
There is no quicktime folder there. And no quicktime program is installed when I try to install iTunes. The only reason I tried installing quicktime in standalone was because the itunes install was not actively going to the quicktime part of its installation.
I've tried removing everything and only installing iTunes. But even after deleting the physical files, using the WIndows Install cleanup tool, and cleaning up my registry, the quicktime portion of the iTunes install doesn't complete, and I keep getting "unknown" errors from the crash prevention program, and from what I can see it's because there's no physical Quicktime program installed.
As for other accounts, no I cannot start it up with other accounts, I keep getting the "Unknown" error and there is no physical files for quicktime anywhere.
And selective startup doesn't seem to work as there is NO qttask option when I run selective startup.
So, I seem to be out of options, and thing else I could try?

Mov is a container format, you'd need to look at the codec used by the movie file inside the container to know whether it will work with the Apple TV or not.

You can't tell which device a purhcase was made on, but if your family members each have their own iTunes account to which your card is linked then you can check the purchase history on each of those accounts via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes - that should have 'purchase history' section with a 'see all' link to the right of it

  • Possible to EDIT in APPLE PRORES 422 in fcp 5.1?

Probably wishful thinking -- but I'm a few years removed from the current fcp and all of its exotic codecs...
My fcp 5.1 can READ apple prores 422, but I can't seem to create a sequence using that codec.
I get an error message that says "codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card".
OK, I get it, but why am I able to PLAY material in my viewer with that codec?
Hmmmm...is there some sort of work around to this, or am I just being delusional?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Ok, ok ... I get it... time to upgrade, time to upgrade.
I cringe every time I get a new client... oh my god -- are they gonna be shooting on XD cam (unsupported by fcp 5) -- will they have material that lives as apple prores? What exotic new codec will I be UNABLE to edit with?
I bought this G5 just before the intel chips were introduced -- I think I actually bought the last one standing....
It's been good -- actually, it's been great...
Thanks for the advice fellas, glad you were able to have a laugh at my expense!
