APPLE publishes 10 point Trouble Shooting Basics for FCPX

Odd, because they can fix some of this, other aspects are built on users method and set up. At least it gives a glimmer of hope that they are listening to feedback from the feedback forms or in fact, they just know inherently at this point. There are issues. For me, I get it, it's new software (new software is never perfect even years later) but what I don't get is the "speed" or lack of speed in regards to fixing specific functions or even basic functionality
I love the software, use it, but like many, it's frustrating

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3893

None of this is new. ALL of it is general guidelines. No matter WHAT software one was using, these tips should be heeded or there will be problems.
Problem is, even with all of these guidelines adhered to 100%, the underlying problems of the software (especially the last 03 incremental update) will not go away. They are coding issues and "built in." Take it or leave it.

Thanks for all of your advise, I really appreciate it!  I know I'm not going to get everything I want in a camera unless I buy a SLR camera, but that wouldn't meet my needs since you can't get into concerts with those types since they consider them "professional."  I was actually leaning toward the ZS7 because I have head a lot of good reviews on it from people at concerts and have watched amazing videos shot with that camera at concerts.  The zoom is incredibly as well as the sound.  Also to clarify my first post about low light, concerts aren't usually that low lighted so I wouldn't need a camera that excelled in low lighting.  Do you own a ZS7?  If so, what do you like about it and what don't you like about it?
Concerts are actually usually quite dark, especially by photography standards.  Perhaps this will help to clarify things a bit:
    Direct Sunlight: 32,000–130,000 lux
Full Daylight (indirect sun): 10,000–25,000 lux
Typical Family Living Room: 50 lux
This means that even the lowest amount of full daylight provides 200 times as much light as the typical family's living room.  So you can imagine the scenario for a dimly lit concert.
However, I do own a ZS7 and have used one successfully at concerts.  Using spot metering, shutter priority and going up to ISO 800 is the best advice I can give you.  ISO 400 is better if you can get proper exposure with it.  Keep in mind that you are NOT going to be able to hold the camera still enough at full zoom to get blur free pictures in this lighting, so make sure you get decent seats.
I love my ZS7 but the tiny sensor found in the ZS7 and all other P&S pocket cams (except for the Canon S90/S95, Samsung EX1, Panasonic LX3/LX5 and any others with equivalently sized sensors and faster lenses) doesn't do well in low light.  Don't fall for that BSI (backlit) CMOS sensor crap that Sony pushes.  There are marginal improvements over the other tiny sensor cams but performance is still poor and the daylight performance is much worse than their CCD counterparts at this point.  Remember that low light essentially includes all indoor phtography as well as very overcast days, dusk, sundown, etc.
The ZS7 has great contrast and color and a slew of features.  It's well made and very versatile.  Really the old thing I don't like is the low light performance.  I also find the video to contain a lot of artifacting, though it's in line with any other 720p pocket cam.  I would defintiely recommend it but if low light is a major concern, check out the other cameras I mentioned as they offer a 40% larger sensor and a faster lens.
Here's a good concert pic with the ZS7.  Metric was on during the day and even though it was overcast, it was fairly bright out.
... and here is a bad concert pic with the ZS7.  It was very difficult to take pics once SSPU came on as it was after 9pm and dark out.

  • General Trouble Shooting Tips for New Users

Ok so we're starting a Topic to help out people just starting up with Logic Express.
Me and a few others who frequent this board with a load of good answers thought it would be a good idea to offer a little helping hand to new users. Hopefully avoiding them their lapses in confidence and creativity by the way of limited techincal knowledge.
As far as Professional sequencers and recorders go Logic is pretty straight forward and quite basic too. If you're coming from either using Garage Band 1/2 or maybe even a PC with Cubase, Cool Edit, Sonar or otherwise. You may find it baffeling to start with.
So we hope this can be of some help to you.

Crack open the champagne it's Tip 1.
First off if you are using an external audio interface make sure it's plugged into your computer, it's powered up and drivers are installed. If using the internal sound card make sure all your connecting cables work ok and they are plugged in.
If you're running Logic for the first time, it should recognise compatible audio interfaces when you run the initial setup. It should also set this to be the default interface from now on.
If you've already been using Logic for a while and have just invested, then make sure and to to Preference/Audio and to the drivers panel. Select the driver there and leave all other settings as they are by default to avoid confusion.
This should then allow you to record audio. SO go to the Edit/Arrangement window and make an Audio if there's not already one there. Then head over to the Mix window and find that channel (Audio 1 is normally all the way to the left). You'll see the faders and just above them the panners, above these will be two boxes the top is to set the input channel on your interface, and the second is the output.
Set these according to the signal path you're trying to record hit the "Rec" button on that channel and you should either see the meter move up and down corresponding the sound, or you'll see the meter and hear the sound as well.
You can turn off the software monitoring (ie being able to hear the sound coming in) in the same preference panel we looked at earlier. Under "Software Monitoring".
Now you should be ready to record the sound. Switch back to the Edit/Arrange window and hit record in the transport bar. PERFORM. Hit stop. Go back to the start of the sound and hit play.
    NOW
If you don't hear sound check the easiest things first. Is you audio interface or internal sound card connected to a set of speakers? Be it by means of an amplifier first or maybe you got some flash active ones!?
Do the cable you're using to connect with actually work?
Is the volume control up on the amp? Are the speakers plugged in?
This may sound stupid but it's the most annoy thing to do wrong and it DOES happen.
If this still doesn't work then double check all your drivers are there present and correct, the volume control in the computer is turned up, you have assign a valid output, and all levels within any software mixer that came with your interface are also all the way up.
Still nothing? Post a detailed description of your setup and problem in the forum and someone will answer it probably within a day or so.
Don't forget READ the manual, don't expect this to as easy as Garageband it's a different scale of operation which given time can reap massive rewards. Not always monitary mind you.
    Good luck.

  • Point and Shoot for Yearbook Staff Photographer

I'm currently looking for a point and shoot camera for the upcoming school year to take pictures at campus events for my college's yearbook.
The last point and shoot I had was a Canon PowerShot A1000IS.  Since then, I've dabbled in manual 35mm photography and would like a digital camera with more settings and a longer zoom.  My budget is less than $250; I'm looking for a camera with at least a 15X zoom (though more wouldn't hurt), a viewfinder, and decent low-light picture quality.
Nothing too fancy; I just want something that isn't too expensive or bulky that will produce decent pictures until I can upgrade to my first DSLR.

What do you think about this?
      http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+-+PowerShot+SX150+IS+Black+14.1-Megapixel+Digital+Camera+-+Black/3...
It's the next step up from the sub $100 Canon's.   I really like it as it uses AA's.  Which I substitute with Eneloop rechargeables.  Image quality is not DSLR.
Do some research, on this model.  There's some report of power issues.
After that.... start budgetting for this...

Trouble Shooting an iSight Camera.  (Version 3)
Hi,     On many subjects Apple has Articles and Documents that can help.
In some case they are written by an Engineer or similar and can miss the mark for the average user.
In other cases they are crafted, detailed responses to an issue that has popped up many times in the Apple Discussions and take the best from many responses in those User-to-User Discussions, creating something that can not be surpassed.
This is the case of the Apple Article HT2090 on Trouble Shooting an iSight.
It lists steps and processes to go through for both Internal iSights and External ones.
However as with most things it does sometime pay to reword things differently so that people grasp the points in language they understand.
The info here is a reworking itself of two pages at ralphjohns.co.uk/EZ Jim pages namely EZ JIm's page 2 Where can I Find Help With My iSight ? and his page 4, How Can I Test My iSight is Completely Functional ?  which were written several years ago and predate the Apple Article, being aimed at the External iSight.  They have been updated since to address the Internal iSight as well but some of the comments are useful between the two types.
External First.  For Internal iSights Start at 2b)  (you will need to adjust some options/steps as the Internal is USB)
    Steps
    1) Pre Purchase
If buying an External iSight you should if you an get to see it in action.Apple no longer sells the External iSight so you will be buying it second hand.If you cannot get to see the device plugged in and working on  Mac then check the smaller print of the seller and selling site as to nature of Returns and Faulty Goods.
    2) Does it work ?
    a) First of all Plug it in.  It should come with a suitable mount (although there are variants on this) and a 6 pin to 6 pin Firewire cable.
Ideally it should have it's own Firewire port/socket on your computer. Connecting it "DaisyChained" to other devices can be a problem as they do not all use Firewire at the same Data speed.
It will then go through some checks as the OS powers it up and checks it's firmware.
Do not be concerned that the little green indicator light atop your iSight illuminates for a few seconds and then goes dark when you first connect your iSight or power on your Mac. Do not be concerned if you hear a soft whir as iSight attempt to focus either. Both these occurrences are normal. If your iSight passes the following tests, do not worry about this sound or the status of the green light.
There is no ON switch as such.  It does have an iris mechanism that can be controlled by the User.  The iris should be turned so you can see the Lens for the iSight to send pictures to an application.
    b) Pick an Application to see the picture the iSight produces.iChat is one application you can use. Photobooth is another. iMovie (Version 4 or above for external iSight -- Version 6 or above for in-built iSight) and Comic Book (if bundled on your Mac) are yet more.
See this Users Tip for more applications Or this page for yet more.
Photo Booth is probably the simplest as it has no Preferences to choose a camera in the original version and is done from the Menu items in later versions  (nor is there any setting in the OS) and Photo Booth will default to the External Camera if one is plugged in before the application is started.     If you see your self or what the camera is pointing at, It Works !!
    3) If it does Not Work
    a) Check Cables/leads.  Re-seat the cable at both ends. DO this carefully as although Firewire cables are keyed to fit the right way it has been known to force them the wrong way.
Try another 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable.
    b) Unplug the cable from any other FireWire device and give the iSight it's Own FireWire port/socket on the Mac (exclude issues with other FireWire devices). It is important that this be a port/socket on your computer and that you know that it works. Do not use a port in a FireWire hub or another FireWire device or a FireWire port in an Apple Display for testing.  (Also see d below if you have an 800 FIreWIre Computer)
    c) Check System Profiler (Apple Icon menu top Left > About this Mac. > More Info Button)Open the Reveal Triangles to see the list and go to Hardware > FireWire.  (Use USB for Internal Cameras)
If it appears here try booting or Logging in as another user on the Mac (Create a Test account if you don't have one) and try item 2b) above again.
    d) With FireWire 800 computers you may have to change your FireWire 400 to 800 Adaptor or Cable to get full Audio functionality with Lion Apps
If it is not in the System Profiler you are almost certainly going to need the Trouble Shooting Article from Apple at this point.  This Article may also be of help (number HT1317 What to do if your computer won't recognise a FireWire or USB device).
If you have not resolved things at this stage it is going to be time for an Engineer with Apple credentials. There are no user serviceable parts inside any iSight.
    Other Items
    Audio.
The External Camera has two mics inside. The volume it records at or plays through for iChat is controlled in System Preferences > Sound > Input tab (select device) and this should be set to get the blue response bar to at least half way (preferably three quarters) when you talk. The same applies to any other Mic, even the Internal one on laptops and some other Macs.
    Firmware.
The System Profiler as detailed above should tell you the Firmware the iSight has.  The current version is 1.0.3 and was updated in Panther.  (Essentially it is an Audio compatibility update but does seem to help in other situations)
If your computer is running Panther (10.2.x) then use this Updater
If running Tiger (10.4.x) or Leopard (10.5.x) then navigate manually to your Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services/iSight Updater and run the updater found there.
If an iSight is Plugged in on the Computer when you do an  OS update and the firmware needs updating on the iSight this app is supposed to be triggered but it seem it may need a hand at times.
    Focusing on the External iSight
Essentially the External iSight is self or Autofocusing.
If in doubt then try better lighting and strong colours as opposes to light or pastels.
(All built-in iSights are fixed focus. Therefore, unless a built-in iSight lens cover is dirty or smudged, any built-in iSight whose image is blurry needs service by an Engineer with Apple credentials.)
EZ Jim has these more specific recommendations for piece of mind.
Make a cross whose lines are about one-half inch or more wide on a plain background to use as a focus target. (I have even used black electrical tape.)
Turn on plenty of light and hold the target very still at about two or three feet from the lens. Watch iSight focus. (You may need to use a tripod or brace yourself to hold the target still enough.)
Then quickly move the target and hold it very still at about one foot away from the lens. Watch iSight focus.
Finally, move in to about six inches from iSight, and check focus there, too. (Holding the target still is more important as you get closer to iSight.)

  • H470 resume light on and all other lights off. Did everything listed in trouble shooting.

I need help fixing this. Checked and performed everything described on the HP trouble shooting page for the H470. Nothing worked. Printer does normal startup check and then resume light flashes and all other lights are off.
    This question was solved.

This light pattern indicates that there is a paper jam or a paper motor stall.
Turn off the printer and then:
    1. Clear the paper jam
    2. Remove loose paper from the tray
    3. Open the front cover and remove any paper jam (look for small pieces as well)
    4. Make sure the carriage moves freely (where you put the ink cartridges in)
    5. Turn the printer back on and attempt to print a self test page (Press and hold the power button and press the resume button four times)
    6. With the printer on, unplug the power cord, wait 15 seconds and plug back in and turn on
    7. Attempt another self test page.

I have an AT&T contracted iphone 5. Cannot send mms to anyone but other iPhone users. If you search the Internet, you'll see that the problem is everywhere...both the carriers and Apple are actling like the problem belongs to the other, or feigning any knowledge (which is kind of funny since the no MMS thing was in an ios6 beta that was released awhile ago, so I KNOW apple knows about it). No, I'm not running a beta (obviously, I just got my iphone 5).  Awesome. Have a great camera on this thing, but cannot send OR receive MMS from anyone other than other iphone users. Gotta love it.
