Apple raid card with Sonnet Tempo SSD problem?

I am currently using Mac Pro 5.1 (2010)
My configuration is
1) Apple Raid Card in PCIe slot 4
2TB bootable HDD and 3x 1TB HDDs configured to RAID 0
2) Apple Radeon 5770 card in PCIe slot 1
3) Sonnet Tempo SSD with Apple OEM 512GB SSD in PCIe slot 2
4) Caldigit Fasta-6GU3pro USB3 + eSATA card in PCIe slot 3
When I boot from 2TB bootable HDD in main slot #1, everything works well.
But, when I install Mavericks to 512GB SSD in PCIe slot, installation finishes without problem, but the system NEVER boot up with that drive.
(The drive appears in boot disc selection in system preference, but nothing changed even select it and reboot.)
(I did a lot of PRAM reset too...)
The SSD works well when I put it to 2nd ODD slot with spare SATA2 connectors in there. (boot properly, etc).
But when I put it back to TEMPO card, It never appears during boot process (even I press option key).
Maybe problem is due to
1) Issue with APPLE raid card
2) problem due to two additional SATA controllers in PCIe rains.
3) Issue with card configuration (I have to test change the position of cards except APPLE RAID which requires slot 4)
Does anybody experienced similar problems?

It is not uncommon to have trouble installing, cloning, or booting from a PCIe card - though the Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD is one of the reliable ones, still, you should install the OS first on SATA II normally, then move the SSD to its new home.
The fact the SSD works on the ODD port - have you asked or looked for firmware update or anything from Sonnet and what they have to say?
With three PCIe cards to contend with, they may interact - not unheard of - and the USB3 may need drivers first to work?

Hello there,
I have decided against the Apple Raid card, since it does not support any other drives than the ones sold through the Apple Store and it also only supports up to 1 TB drives.
My goal is to have 3x 1.5 TB drives in a RAID 5 array.
Does anybody know any hardware Raid 5 capable adapters, that can be used with internal 1.5 TB drives & the early 2009 Mac Pro model ?

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, ATTO and LSI, and Adaptec mainly owned the storage market for Mac controllers, and even then in those happy times we heard there was Voodoo in the land, and a curse on what were the Rules of SCSI Voodoo, and one had to be careful that a drive really was certified and tested, and one had to insure which firmware version one was talking about, not just any which firmware - and controllers also had to be updated as well.
Signal processing over SCSI with good active termination, cable length, and 160 pins (and cable strands) (and no noise or crosstalk, good insulation).
If one did all of the above, and was careful, you were rewarded with a working storage controller and array and the best possible performance at the time.
And sometimes you could venture off the reservation... a little, and some drivers could patch and work around bugs in firmware or other problems - just as bugs in cpu, boot firmware, and microcode can be patched by the OS kernel. And people would pay for retail drivers, or they would have to rely on the vendor's bundled driver (that may only work on their own drives and no others).
Hard Disk Toolkit, Silverlining and others made name for themselves, amoung others that now have faded into oblivion for most.
But it still exists when you venture beyond consumer and pro-consumer devices and venture to use FC-SCSI, SCSI, and SAS. And taking a chance when you try to use off the shelf SATA storage products and solutions. There are times when OEM drives really are OEM-only and a good thing; and times to avoid.
And there is no list of any kind of successfully used non-Apple drives, though there is word-of-mouth of a few that definitely need to be avoided.

Apple Raid Card panic on Mac Pro Early 2008 after installing SSD as an enhanced JBOD.

I recently installed a SSD drive in my Mac Pro to replace an aging, original boot drive. I have an Apple raid card with 3 other hds attached - all in an enhanced JBOD configuration. After installing the SSD from OWC (3G Electra SATA II Compatible) everything appeared to work fine. But after 36 hours I received a apple raid card kernel panic alert. See below for diagnostic crash log. OWC support says that their drive should work fine - now I am not so sure. Anyone out there with suggestions/solutions is most welcomed.

MacPro2009-Apple Raid Card-2.2TB limit

I have a MacPro (early 2009) with an Apple Raid Card. Lion 10.7.4
I just bought a 4 Tb Sata hard drive and there is no way to make it work on the Apple Raid Card. When it mount , it only show a capacity of 2,2 TB and Apple disk Utility is of no utility with it on the Raid Card.
So I managed to hook it in the Optical Drive bay and I have now a 4 TB volume available for Network backup.
Can you confirm the limit on the Apple raid card

I have this same issue with a mid 2010 MacPro Server running 10.8.2/OS X Server (10.8) and the Apple RAID Card with 3 - 1TB drives and an added 4TB drive (in Bay 4) that is only being seen with the 2.2TB limit. I even initialized it and tested it a bit with my MacPro1,1 and a NewerTech toaster on eSata. Very nice to see a workaround with the optical bay... thank you for that suggestion! I was going to go to another enclosure or hard drive "toaster" / dock that allows 4TB drives and use eSata or FW800 as a connection... the 2nd optical drive bay sounds great and will give it a try.
The only thing I can figure from all this and talking to Tier 2 AppleCare is that the RAID card is only 32 Bit addressing O.o ... which seems crazy but makes the most sense. They will more than likely respond with "The drive is unsupported, since it isnt an "Apple" HD."

Lion, trim & SSD on Apple RAID card

Hi, I have a MAc Pro 2x2.8 Ghz Quad-Core with an Apple RAID card and SO OS X 10.7.2.
It has 2x SSD in stripe o and others 2x500 GB also in stripe 0.
I'd like to know if is possible to enable TRIM support for SSD disks with this setting, and if I can have a real improvement to live their linked to RAID card or is better to keep out raid card and connect without it.

Apple Pro RAID card isn't perfect, has limitations, and it has made it harder.

even Apple RAID (software) is fine but I would never use Apple for mirroring.
Use to be and may still be true that you risk using any drives but Apple's with Apple firmware, if you go Apple RAID route.
On PCs you have Intel motherboard RAID, can add controller, and software is shunned totally. Software RAID with Mac OS X seems more than fine.

Windows7/Bootcamp on Sonnet-Tempo-SSD-Card over PCIe?

I have Windows7-Pro/Bootcamp 3 on a SSD and it works fine, but over internal SATA-Port with only max. 3 Gbit/s.
The SSD on Sonnet-Tempo-SSD can work with 6 Gbit/s over PCIe-Port.
Is it possible to install Windows/Bootcamp 5 in this way, will it be bootable then
with the latest Bootcamp 5 now?
Sonnet Support so far says:
"Unfortunately, you will not be able to run Windows/Bootcamp from the Tempo SSD card, as the drive is recognized as an externally mounted volume, and in order to run these OSes, the drives need to be mounted internally (through one of the drive bays) in order for the boot to work properly.
Windows will load normally if the Tempo SSD cards are mounted in a PC, likewise, OS X will boot if used in a Mac, but unfortunately, running a virtual machine (Bootcamp) will not work in the Mac".

2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"

I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight. Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing. Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right? Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
(1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now. Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
(2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable. Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it? I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?
Hesitant to plunk down $160 on a new spare disk if the present one isn't actually dead ...

I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked. The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then. You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity". If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0! raidutil now says

Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did. I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive. I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone. The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card. I wasn't too worried about that happening.

CAN the Mac Pro deep-sleep with the Apple Raid Card?

So, reading through previous posts, there seems to be a problem (or 'feature' to charge the battery?) that prevents the Mac Pro from sleeping when the Apple Raid Card is installed.
Can users owning this setup corraborate? Is this indeed the intended way to work?

as far as I know, deep sleep is only available for portable machines. if you meant regular sleep I cant help you because I haven't got a RAID card.
edit: I may have confused deep sleep with safe sleep… sorry.

Apple RAID Card Panic with Lion

Since upgrading my MacPro to Lion, I've have numerous RAID Card panic attacks leading to a crash (the log indicates a RAID Card panic). Anyone else having this problem? I have the most recent MacPro with 64 GB, 12 Core, ATI 5870, MacPro RAID Card with 4 3TB Hitachi drives (show up as 2.2 TB due to RAID Card limitations), RAID 5 on bays 2-4 and stand-alone JBOD used as system Mac HD in bay 1. Previously had the Apple-supplied 2 TB Hitachi drives, but these are the same model, just a larger capacity, so I don't think there's a problem with the disk cache interfering with the RAID Card cache.
I'm also experiencing intermittent sync problems with a 30" Apple Cinema Display as monitor has numerous vertical lines (anyone having this problem?). I can always fix this by unplugging the monitor cable and reconnecting it (that's why I think it's a sync problem).
I would appreciate any feedback - I'm concerned that the RAID Card drivers which are built into Lion may have an issue...

I would say you jumped on new OS pre-maturely. Let the consumers play with it, test it if you want, yes as long as it doesn't impact your work or pleasure, if it is possible to setup Lion on a test drive somehow.
I'm surprised you have been using it with 3TB drives, seemed like everyone else either ditched the card or moved the drives to run off a 2nd external controller.
Lion probaby once again changed how network services and devices like NAS talk to each other. The Lion Community is still scrolling so fast I doubt anyone can read more than a fraction of the threads.
There should never ever really be a need to reinstall.

ditto to doing a Lion install/upgrade over older OS, take the time to read and explore how to setup a clean install of Lion; create a Lion installer (FireWire 800 is perfect place to store it on a small 15GB volume).

Apple RAID card w/SSD in Optical Bay

If I've got this right, you cannot use the Apple RAID card in the new Mac Pro if you have even one SSD drive in any of the four HD bays. What I'm trying to determine is if you can use the Apple RAID card if the four HD bays all have 'normal' drives installed, but still want to use an SSD as a 5th drive, and locate it in the lower optical bay.
Hope the question makes sense, and I hope someone knows the answer!

If you have not already purchased an Apple RAID card, and you only want to set up a RAID 0, as your post on another thread suggests, why not set up a software RAID 0 using Disk Utility:

With any RAID configuration the drives should all be identical, whether you are using 2, 3 or 4 drives.
I have 4 WD VelociRaptor 300GB drives in a striped (Scratch + Data) RAID 0 configuration in the 4 hard drive bays of my 2009 Nehalem Mac Pro, and set this up with Disk Utility.
The OS and my applications are on an SSD which is installed in the lower optical drive bay, and this set up works fine:

Apple Raid Card compatibility with Tiger 10.4.11 ?

I am considering raiding 4 internal HD in a Mac Pro and I am still using Tiger 10.4.11.
Is there some compatibility issues with Apple Raid Card ?
The card specs say it should run 10.5 to work properly.
Any hints ?

By putting in MacPro & 10.4, then searching the results for the word raid, though I don't see 10.4.11 specifically, I did notice RAID getting broken at upgrade points, and less than spectacular results... heck, my 10.3.9 SATA I, 2 drive RAID 0 on a QS/2001/G4/DP/1.467 does almost as good as the MacPro results.

Mac Pro with Apple Raid Card - 1 drive OSX (JBOD) + 1 drive Vista?

Can anyone walk me through what I'd need to do to set up an early 2008 model Mac Pro with the Apple Raid Card pre-installed and 2 500 gig drives, so that I can have OSX on the first drive and Vista on the second?
I know it defeats the purpose of the raid card, but...
What I've done so far is:
1. Removed drive #2
2. Install and using Raid Utility, add the first drive as a JBOD set/volume
3. After install, shut down the machine
4. Re-add drive #2
5. Restart
6. Use disk utility to add drive #2
I tried to use bootcamp, but it only wants to put windows on the first drive - which won't work because it is RAID.

Run Vista off an ATA interface in the 2nd optical drive. There is an SATA 2 ATA adapter.
I think you can boot Vista off some RAID controllers, check out Highpoint RocketRAIDs. Should be able to configure the RR.
Boot Vista off USB is a stretch.

How can I force the Disk Cache on with Apple Raid Card?

I have an apple raid card in my mac pro that has now had it's battery fail twice. I don't really want to keep putting money into this and would rather just force the disk cache on and hope my UPS works, I don't use this box for real work anymore anyway and it's all backed up.
There used to be a force on button next to the Write Cahce Status section, but that seems to have gone away. Does anyone know how to force the cache on? Permanently if possible.

Access MP motherboard SATA ports when using Apple RAID card

I asked this question in another topic and thought I'd have better luck in a separate topic.
I will soon be the proud owner of an early 2008 3.2 G Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card. I have been given a lot of great advice by the regulars to this topic area who gave me an idea that I wanted to confirm would work.
Since the internal HDs are connected through the RAID card, that leaves the iPass connector free to connect 4 more SATA drives to the motherboard. The suggestion was made to use an iPass to 4 x SATA cable to gain access. But where to attach and mount the drives? If not the optical bay, the only alternative is outboard, but what to do with the cable? I also learned here that there are two more SATA ports on the motherboard, and Newer Technology makes a cable that attaches to both and mounts in an empty PCI slot hole. Very neat.
So why not combine the two? I am not certain, but it appears that the connector genders are such that you could combine an iPass to 3 x SATA cable attached to the motherboard to a pair of the Newer Tech cables, then mount them to the PCI doors enabling the user to attach 4 more SATA drives with suitable for another RAID, boot Camp or whatever. Does this seem a reasonable solution? Would love some feedcak on this. Thanks.

It is not uncommon to have trouble installing, cloning, or booting from a PCIe card - though the Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD is one of the reliable ones, still, you should install the OS first on SATA II normally, then move the SSD to its new home.
The fact the SSD works on the ODD port - have you asked or looked for firmware update or anything from Sonnet and what they have to say?
With three PCIe cards to contend with, they may interact - not unheard of - and the USB3 may need drivers first to work?

Windows and Mac Pro w/ Apple RAID card

It happened i have a need to run Windows natively on Mac Pro with Apple RAID card installed.
I know there is no Windows driver for that card, but i had a hope to bypass RAID card via connecting of internal SATA drive directly to iPass(SSF-8087) connector of Mac Pro's motherboard and using of that drive for Windows.
So, i've connected SATA drive this way and it works fine with OS X.
But i can't even try it with Windows because Mac Pro doesn't boot up from Windows installation CD if Apple RAID card installed
Empty black text console is all that i've got after selecting of Windows installation CD in EFI boot menu.
I need a suggestion how to bypass my problem, or generally speaking, how to install Windows onto Mac Pro with Apple RAID card.

I've tried that.
Installation and booting of WinXP passed OK if RAID card removed.
But i've got black screen again trying to boot WinXP after RAID card re-installed.
