Apple Remote Desktop 3.2.1 Connection failed and Macbooks

Hi All.
Anyone see this where you can't control/observe into a Macbook? I'm able to copy files and update the ARD software, but I get the "Connection failed" message when trying to control/observe. I went through the "Removing ARD" process and re-installed, but no luck. With my other units like a Macbook Pro, MacPro, and IMac....I have no issues just with this one.
I could try and re-image, but that's the last step I would like to take. Thanks for any help in advance.

I had a similar problem with 15 out of 20 MacBooks on a school network. Couldn't figure it out for the longest time. Tried reinstalling the OS, tried reinstalling ARD, etc. No luck.
I still don't know the cause of the problem, but here is the solution that worked for me on all 15 failing machines:
1) In ARD access the "Create Client Installer" function.
2) Making sure select your options properly, create a custom client installer package. (In my case, each machine already had an admin account which I wished to use, so I did not need to create a new account for ARD access).
3) Take this little installer package around to each machine which isn't working and install it. You don't even have to restart, it just immediately begins to work.

    Not a problem. There are a number of other system and network setup commands that you might find useful at some time. From within the Remote Desktop Admin in the Send Unix Command window type:
    networksetup -help
    systemsetup -help
    That will give you lists of the commands, including the one I posted above, with their basic syntax. They're handy to know.

  • Apple Remote Desktop multiple ports on one address / ip

    I am using Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) version 3.5.1 and I want to add computers to the list. I have several virtual machines running on an VMWare ESXi host. VMWare enables screen sharing via VNC but with different ports for different VMs.
    So I have this:
    ESXi host ip :      xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxFirst VM vnc port:  5901Second VM vnc port: 5902 ....
    I am able to connect to each those VMs via
    open vnc://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5901
    I can also add the first VM to the ARD computer list. But when I add the second VM it overwrites the first VM because the ip address is the same. Is it possible to workaround this problem?

    I do not use the native vnc of each VM but instead use a screen sharing feature of the ESXi host (which is also included and works the same way in VMWare Fusion). So to connect to a VM I use the IP of the host machine and then different ports.
    I am aware of the .vncloc-files option but I want to connect via the Apple Remote Desktop application.

    It's part of the operating system - always has been since at least 10.2 (Jaguar). You should update it whenever there's an update available.

    You do have it and it's called Remote Management. You'll find it in the Sharing Preferences Pane. Whether you want it or not is entirely up to you. It's not on by default and is in no way a security risk, a virus, an exploit, malware or anything else that may be seen as 'nasty'.

    Page 3 basically says it all. On every mac OS there will always be the client version of ARD. The manual mentioned above is for the administration part of ARD.
    If this is the only computer you have then you will probably never ever need it or use it. But that does not mean you should not update it when the update for it is available.

  • Apple Remote Desktop not connecting

    I have set up new iMac with OSX.8.3 and released the remote administration as I did before on many other devices.
    In the Apple Remote Desktop window I can see the computer and it presents itself as any other computer also, to which I have access to (available, current user etc)
    However, when I try to connect I get in the LAN immediately "connection failed".
    From outside via VPN I get this message:
      Please make sure that the remote administration (in System Preferences "Shares") is enabled on the computer to which you want to connect. Also make sure that your network connection is working correctly.
    Here, after all, is an indication, albeit an improper. I can see the computer in the list of the ARD window and that it is available. But cannot connect either
    I have tried with and without firewall, with no success. In addition, in the firewall the Remote Administration is enabled.
    I am little perplexed. (With TeamViewer I can connect)

  • Apple Remote Desktop - connect to computer after their password changed?

    I have a problem with Apple Remote Desktop which is driving me up the walls.
    When I observe or control a computer, Apple Remote Desktop saves the username and password so that next time I'm not prompted for a username or password.
    Problem is, when the password on the computer changes and I once again try to control it, Apple Remote Desktop simply comes up with an "authentication failed" message. There is no option to put a new username and password in. I cannot find any option to delete previously stored passwords.
    Currently I'm resorting to deleting:
    /private/var/db/RemoteManagement/ClientCaches
    /private/var/db/RemoteManagement/caches
    It is extremely frustrating doing the above each time a computer's password changes!
    I must be missing something. Does anyone have a better way of going about this?

    Have a look at RealVNC at http://www.realvnc.com/download.html. Install this on your Windows computer and be sure to configure a password for VNC connections. You should then be able to see your XP system in Apple Remote Desktop.
    Keep in mind that the VNC software is free (unless you choose to purchase a version with more features) but the Apple Remote Desktop client is a commercial product http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/.
    If you need a different (free) client for your Mac, I suggest using the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection client found here http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopc lient. This only works with Professional version of Windows XP and not the Home version. Or you can downlod a VNC client for Mac such as Chicken of the VNC found here http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/.

  • Apple Remote Desktop not connecting to O2 Wireless Box

    I've successfully got Apple Remote Desktop to connect to, view and control various Macs connected to numerous routers.
    But the O2 Wireless Box doesn't want to play ball and I simply can't figure out why it won't allow me to connect.
    Using http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/O2/O2-TG585v7/Apple_Remot e_Desktop.htm as a guide (this was the only O2 router it referred to), I'm forwarding ports 3283, 5900 & 5988 but I simply can't connect using Apple Remote Desktop via the Internet.  It just sticks on 'Connecting...' and then goes to a failed message.  It suggested that, perhaps, Remote Desktop isn't enabled on the other machine ... but it is.
    It seems to be something very odd about the router (it doesn't even allow remote management of the router as O2 removed that functionality fearing it was 'too dangerous' to allow the end user access to this) and I'm wondering whether there's something else I need to do to make the connection.
    Can anyone give me as guidance on this please?  It's driving me crazy!

    It is often difficult to explain a problem, so don't worry. Let's break it down.
    Firstly, does ARD work when you are at your place of work? - can you control a mac?
    If so, this is good.
    Ok, from work you need to access your router and find your public IP address, you only have one. You will often find this is the status page.
    The IP is usually a class A address starting with 80 or 90, but this obviously isn't always so, depending on your ISP and region. make sure you are not using the router's local lan IP! You will also need to make sure your home router is allowing ARD ports through!
    You now need to port forward the ARD ports to the mac you want to control, which I believe you have done. For example, port 3283 > IP address of remote mac.
    I know when I did this, I just opened up all ports for a couple of minutes just to get it working, then I locked access down. If you havn't done so then you need to enable remote management on your work router so you can configure it at home.
    On your mac at 'home' open ARD, and go to file> add by address and enter the PUBLIC IP address. You will also need to enter the admin user name and password for the said mac.
    That's it, you should have control.
    If your macs at work and home have a firewall enabled then you will need to update your rules.

    It's not absolutely necessary but it would be more useful if you did have one. Most ISPs will require you to have a business class broadband service at your home rather than a residential one. These cost more (a lot more in some cases) than a residential service. Call your home location's ISP and discuss it with them.
    If the cost is too much then you could go for a DynDNS account which is free. The details of this account would be configured in the whatever you're using as a firewall at your home's location. This assumes the firewall has the facility to add such an account. Thereafter it's just a question of configuring the port fowarding feature of that firewall.
    A potentially 'big' problem though is whether or not your workplace will allow that kind of traffic out of their network. This would be something you'd need to discuss with them first.

    I did purchase "Apple Remote Desktop"in mac app store, it works well in the same wifi's network but when i try to use different network, but i won't connect.
    It said " Please make sure Screen Sharing in the System preference", but it won't works as well.

    The first thing I'd suggest is that you talk to your network support group and make sure that the necessary IP ports, primarly 3283 and 5900, are open between the two networks. If those are blocked, ARD can't connect.

I have tried to add it by add computer by address but it comes up with an error message and can not connect. I am sure I have the right IP and user name/password. If you can please give me any documents on how to do this task and or tell me step by step how to do it. thanks I just want to remote log in in to a mac that on another network using remote desktop.     The subject of connecting ARD via the Internet has been covered here many times already. Search the forum for "Internet" and you should find multiple posts on the topic. You can also look at this web page if it's back on line (it was down when I last tried it):

  • Apple Remote Desktop Can't Connect to an Xserve running 10.5

    I was upgrading an Xserve with dual G5 processors from OS-X serve10.4 to 10.5. I've got a keyboard and monitor plugged into the Xserve. Apple Remote Desktop v3.5 can't connect with the Xserve. File sharing on the server is checked to allow it. The ARD ports seem to be open on the server. .When ARD scans our network computers, the Xserve says Access Denied next to it. When I try to connect it says something like "Unable to Verify." Any ideas what the issue might be?

    Well the File Sharing service would not have anything to do with remoting in.  Have you checked Remote Managed and checked to see if the accounts listed with access have everything checked off?
    Did the local admin password of the server change?  Can you ping the server?

         If they have set up port forwarding for you already then that is different.  In that case, then you could be experiencing the bug with the most recent release of ARD (3.7.2) and in particular ARD 3.7.2 and Yosemite ARD version 3.8 clients.  It has been reported numerous times in the forums and to Apple that since 3.7.2, clients are frequently unavailable to connect to despite there being no network issue between the remote computer and client computer.  I have not seen anyone report it who was working from outside the LAN to inside the LAN, but I have the same issue with a number of my own computers that are simply on a different subnet, so it stands rot reason that it would happen from a port forwarding location.
         I am sometimes able to resolve the issue locally by SSH connecting into the client computer using Terminal on my admin machine and restarting or relaunching the ARD agent on the remote device, then trying to connect to it again after about 30 seconds.
    The Terminal commands for this procedure are as follows, though you might need to include a port number from outside the LAN:
    First:
    ssh ipaddress -l adminusername
    (example: ssh 192.168.1.1 -l macadmin)
    Second:
    sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -restart -agent
    After that, waiting about 30 seconds and trying to observe or control usually works, though the computer may still fail to show an online or lit-up status indicator.

    You would have to launch software that would accept audio from the microphone and transmit it to you in some fashion. ARD does not transmit audio itself. Another remote control solution such as Timbuktu might transmit audio, so you could look into that, perhaps.

    You can install a VNC server on the PC and ARD can then take control of the system. It can be tricky to find a VNC system that will work with ARD, though, so search this forum for "VNC" for possible options. One of the applications that support Microsoft's remote desktop architecture such as their own Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac or iTap Mobile RDP will probably work better, though.

    I cannot get apple remote desktop to recognize my lab computers.  It only recognizes one in there and all the info is the same on the others.  It sees them but it says they are offline when I have them all on and ready.  I did an update to make sure they were up to speed. I am running ARD 3.5.2 on mine and 3.5.2 on the snow leopard macs and there are some just leopard macs in there running 3.4.

    Sorry, but no, ARD does not have a "remote printing" feature. You can use ARD to copy a file to a remote Mac and than take control of that Mac to print the document, but you cannot print directly to the remote Mac (unless someone else here knows a trick I've not discovered).
    Depending on how your wife's company has things set up in their connection to the Internet, she may be able to just set up printer sharing on the work computer and print directly without needing ARD at all. A utility such as Slink may make that easier:

    Since updating to Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.0, I have had this problem. I just updated to 3.7.1 and the problem is still occuring.
    I am using RealVNC Viewer 5.0.6 Windows 64bit on a Windows 7 machine to connect to my Mac through Apple Remote Desktop VNC.
    It's tricky to describe the problem, but I'll do my best:
    Remote desktop is quick and responsive (I'm using it over an internal network)... Except for the last frame of any sequence of frames. For example, if I scroll a window quickly, the intermediate frames showing the scrolling come through quickly... But the last frame that my screen settles on takes up to a full second before it comes through.
    You can reproduce this problem most easily by opening up a terminal, typing a command, then pressing return. Or, press return multiple times in rapid succession: The first few returns come through fast, but the last one always comes through slow, up to a full second later.
    I never had this problem before the 3.7.0 update. Any progress on fixing this issue?

    I agree the new Remote Desktop 3.7.1 is very laggy. All my machine are up to date with patch, same issue..
