Apple Remote Desktop 3 and Real VNC

Just wanted to post an FYI, that recently I found out VNC (Real VNC) Server & Viewer were conflicting with ARD 3.2 in terms of screen sharing/control. All other connections were fine. (e.g. chat, message, package install, etc..) For me to regain a successful connection to my clients I had to uninstall VNC, reboot and "whalla" screen share/control was full functional again. I don't know if anyone had a work around for the two programs to work simultaneously, but I couldn't figure it out and just uninstalled VNC. Not sure if this would be the same case with Ultra VNC, but I think it is safe to say that if you are wanting to remote manage a group of Macs (PC's included) you should stick with just one program. Any thoughts out there?

The "normal" version:
Yep. All generic VNC software will conflict with ARD. This is a good note for most admins out there.
The "geek" version:
Tell RealVNC to use port 5901. Look at the "Connection Options" section of the documentation for your server-side os/version.
The "too much information?" version:
Actually, VNC servers and ARD do just fine side by side. (Aside from listening and bonjour advertising and that), both servers are actually inactive until they receive a connection request. The clincher is that any services ...from Apache to ARD reports to SMB to VNC... always need to be listening to different sockets on different ports. In the good old days, VNC servers could actually listen on several ports and would serve at different color depths and resolutions based on the port number of an incoming request. In fact even today, because ARD uses a mostly standards-compliant VNC implementation, it has to use a different port for reports and commands and such so it won't conflict with the inbuilt VNC server.
VNC is usually on port 5900 nowadays. ARD uses 5900 for its VNC without asking. ARD also uses (or has used) 3283, 5432, 5433, and 5988 for reports and other non-VNC communication. (See: Apple's [list of common ports|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629].) In my experience, ARD's VNC client can very reliably control standards-compliant VNC servers, though your mileage may vary.
-- To control a non-ARD VNC server via ARD, just do whatever you normally would in ARD. When controlling, it may warn you that the VNC server doesn't support keystroke encryption, etc. but should still work fine.
-- To connect ARD to a VNC service running on a different port, choose "Add by Address… ⌥⇧⌘N" and in the address field, type the domain name or IP address as you normally would, but append a full colon ":" and the port number. For example, jsmith.example.com:5901 would connect to the computer named jsmith but would look for the VNC service on port 5901.
-- To control a Mac which is running the OS's ARD-VNC server from a third-party VNC app, you must have 'plain' VNC access turned server-side (that is, on the Mac to be controlled: System Prefs > Sharing > Remote Management > Computer Settings > "VNC viewers…"). As long as you use a decent client, it should work reliably after that.
I routinely run the standard ARD "Remote Management" services on my servers for normal remote interaction, but then have a Vine Server set up on 5901 with vastly different settings to benefit low bandwidth connections from the internet, from my iPod's VNC client, or through bouncy ssh tunnels.
If you have any other experiences or questions, or especially if anyone wants try any of this and encounters problems, by all means post back.
Cheers, Joel

  • Apple remote desktop name and organization

    Hi
I just downloaded apple remote desktop from my developer account but when i run it and put the serial number
it also asks for name and organization which doesnt exists in the file that have the serial number so from where
    i can get those ?

The latest version of ARD is available from the App Store, and does not require a serial number. You can also buy the serial numbered version, with a serial number, at the online store (http://store.apple.com/us/search?find=apple+remote+desktop).

  • Least CPU Usage- Real Monitor or Apple Remote Desktop

    Hello,
What would require the least processing power of a Mac Pro; a 24 inch monitor run via a DVI cable or the same image accessed via Apple Remote Desktop software and displaying the screen on another Mac? Here is the rest of the story...
I am designing a home video surveillance system built around a Mac Pro and SecuritySpy. It will coordinate 12 network cameras (HD quality) and the potential load of the cameras alone will be huge. My goal is to place the Mac Pro in a locked network closet and administer it remotely. I can either go the Apple Remote Desktop route or have the monitor signal sent via an ethernet adapter, but the aim is to tax the CPU the least.
    So, what are your thoughts?

    Hatter,
Well, the network closet will indeed have it's own dedicated air conditioning unit, so the heat issue should be addressed. However, initial calculations with the possibility of capturing twelve 0.8 Megapixel H.264 video streams at the same time would cripple any current Mac Mini model. Only a 2.93 GHz 12-core Mac Pro could handle this kind of load, and even then, at only 6 frames per second. Obviously I am very anxious to see what Apple will release with it's next line of Mac Pro's (if they don't kill firther production as rumored). I might also be interested in a Mac Mini cluster, but that would cost even more money in the long run.
So, back to my original question. Anyone?

  • Apple Remote Desktop admin update now won't open 3.5.1

So a few days ago I updated Apple Remote Desktop admin and now the program won't launch. It says that the admin version is not compatible with the client. I went to apple's software updater and it doesn't show that anything needs to be updated on the client side. Any suggestions?
    Running on:
    Mac Pro
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Okay thanks,  dragging the old app to the trash and logging into the app store did it.  What threw me a bit is that it was asking for my credit card info in order to process the download.  Evidently it only was doing this because it had an old card stored in the system.  I don't THINK it charged me to download again .

  • Apple Remote Desktop conflict with iChat/iSight

I have found an irritating but reproducible conflict between Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) and iChat. If I try to set up a video chat (either within our local network or to the outside world) when ARD is running on my computer (PB 12" 1.5GHz, 10.4.4), the video attempts to start ie I get a video window, but the connection never creates and after a few seconds I get a message saying
‘Disconnected from video chat because: Can't get video from the camera’.
If I quit ARD everything works OK. Does anyone know of a fix for this?
    Thanks

  • Apple Remote Desktop 3

    Hi,
I have just installed Apple Remote desktop 3 and when I start, it gives me a error message that the installed apple remote desktop client is a previous version. The installed apple remote desktop client on my machine is 2.1 but how can I verify that? And how can I fix this error?
    Thanks,
    Omer

Try this: remove ARD client using the instructions here and then reinstall. If the problem persists, try installing the ARD 3.2 client using this installer.
    Regards.

  • If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?

I have several friends and family who are looking for a central place to access information from ( Pictures, home movies etc ).  So I am considering setting up an OSX Lion Server.  There are some other things I can use it for as well.
    Here is my question:
If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?  Or would I have to install the Admin software on each?  Do they intend it to be used strictly as one admin to access many clients?
I always could set up a network drive so they can log in and just see the folders they have created with space on the server I provide them.  But I want them to be able to log an and actually use it as a Remote Desktop.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Dave,
Thanks for the feedback.  I understand that ARD is meant for Remote Administration, but I was not sure if it could be used for my purpose as well.  The reason I was looking to do it this was was because I read several articles online about security and performance issues with setting up VNC and activating screen sharing.  Unless I am misunderstood.
As far as people's activities on the server, mostly it is going to be used as a place for them to store their media.  I will only allow own person ( Who I trust and I know wont botch the server ), to run applications.  Everyone else will be restricted to uploading and downloading content to their designated account on the server as well as a community share on the server.
    I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Setting up Apple Remote Desktop to control a PC using VNC Enterprise

I am using Remote Desktop 3 and have all my computers talking on my home network, this includes a Compaq PC using VNC and also 2 Power Mac G4's. All is well on my HOME network.
I would like to incorporate a computer (in a different state) over the internet.
It is a PC using VNC Enterprise Edition.
I was wondering if any fellow Mac freak could help a Newbie with a step by step process of adding the PC.
I wish to control certain programs for the other user but have no idea how to do so.
Just looking for a step-by-step as I've searched the Internet thorougly without sucess.
Thanks you in advance for your help

  • Shutdown a remote iMac using Apple Remote Desktop and Automator action

    Hi,
I have my iMac and my wife's iMac connected to the same UPS. There is only one USB connector for the UPS that notifies my iMac when its time to shutdown due to a power cut out.
Is there a way for my iMac to then send a command to my wife's iMac (which may be asleep; the iMac not my wife!) and instruct it to shutdown (forcefully)?
The Belkin UPS software enables me to launch an automator action before it shuts down my computer.
    Your help would be appreciated,
    Tony

Unless you already have Apple Remote Desktop, it will almost certainly be cheaper to just buy a second UPS for your wife's iMac than it will be to purchase ARD.
If you do have ARD 3 already, then it looks like it would be possible to create an Automator workflow that would select your wife's iMac and then send the Unix command "shutdown" (look at the man page for shutdown for the usage). I haven't tried doing this, though, so I can't say for sure, but it looks like it would work.

  • Using Leopard with iCal, Apple Remote Desktop, and Quicktime/Keynote

    Hi,
I need to create the following 'synergy' or workflow or 'automation' between these softwares:
    - iCal
    - Apple Remote Desktop
    - Quicktime/Keynote
    This is the application:
Remotely controlling (ARD) and scheduling (iCal) several quicktime/keynote files for display (ie. playing full screen video but controlling which file is playing from home).
How can I integrate all softwares?
    Extended application:
I would also like to know if Leopard or any Apple software has the capability to read serial (RS-232) commands. For example, I would like to know and/or be advised if a screen/monitor is turned off (regardless if the computer is properly displaying the content or not).
I look forward to your feedback.
    Thanks,
    LMB1980

It is if you are trying to stream it.
Users may want to stream their music into a third party program such as Ventrilo (as I do) to share their music (but not their libraries) with other listeners and speak on Ventrilo at the same time. You need two user profiles running Ventrilo at the same time, and two user profiles running iTunes.
When I roll over to User Profile #2 after setting up iTunes to stream into Vent in User Profile #1, iTunes stops playing. This is a recent change. It's annoying.
    How do I change it?

  • Apple Remote Desktop and controlling over VPN

    Hi All,
I had a question about whether something was possible and if so if someone could point me to instructions/how-to on setting it up.
I have three Macs I am administering. One is an iMac that stays in the office on the network. Two are MBP's. One is always at a remote location, the other comes in and out of the office. I work remotely administering the server and the three systems. I have the latest version of Apple Remote Desktop and obviously can access the server fine. I was wondering though if there is any way besides having the person give me their IP address every time that through the VPN I can see their system, then access it in Remote Desktop just like we are on the network together? Basically they connect to the network via VPN if they are remote and I do the same thing and then access their machine.
I hope that makes sense. I went through different parts of the guide for ARD but didn't come across a method like that described in there.
Anyone with opinions? Thoughts? Chants of I'm an idiot? haha
    Thanks

Yeah for some reason I cannot get this to work right. Even if I scan the 5 VPN IP's I have setup I cannot see their machines when I am connected to the VPN. I tested it the other day by connecting one of the systems to an outside internet connection, then logged it into the VPN. I then connected my own to a different source and logged into the VPN, but Remote Desktop just won't find it.
Just not sure why it doesn't work. I can see the computers on our internal network though, just not any connected via VPN.

  • Apple Remote Desktop and Microsoft Dynamic DNS

Ok, so we are trying to manage Mac in our enterprise. We have bound them to the ActiveDirectory domain so that we can centrally control log on authentication. Now we bought Apple Remote Desktop in an effort manage updates/push packages/make configuration changes, but there is a slight problem: The apple remote desktop application needs to know the IP address of the machines to be able to manage them but our work force is mobile so they VPN into our network and receive an IP from the DHCP pool.
How, then, can we get the mac to update its IP address in our Microsoft DNS system like our Windows machines? Is there an equivalent "register this connection's entry in DNS?" feature in MacOS?

  • Apple Remote Desktop and Classroom iPad set

I am a teacher with a classroom set of iPads.  I recently used the Apple Remote Desktop program in our computer lab to monitor the students and loved it.  Is there an app (Mac or iPad) that I can use to monitor my students as they work on their iPads that works like Apple Remote Desktop?
    Thanks,
    ipadclassroom

Allot of the newer iOS devices support AirPlay with Mirroing. This lets the device stream video & audio to devices like AppleTV. There is an application called reflector that lets Multiple iOS Device stream video to a Mac Computer. Last time I used it, I could get away with streaming video from 4 devices to the computer.
The thing about airplay is the user on the iPad has to chose to stream video, instead of you choosing to look at their screen.
Lan Desk offers some teacher/student tools for ipads. http://www.lanschool.com/lanschool/features/ios-student The catch is that the student has to have the app, and open the app.

  • Apple Remote Desktop and Itunes

I am using Apple remote desktop to connect to several servers with several users on each server. When Itunes is playing and I try to fast user switch, it will stop playing itunes on the user I am switching from.

  • Apple Remote Desktop and WildBlue Excede

I am trying, without luck, to get Remote Desktop to work with WildBlue Excede. Can port forwarding be established with their Surfbeam2 Satellite Modem? If so, what are the port numbers, and how is it done?
Has anyone had success in setting up Apple Remote Desktop and WildBlue?
WildBlue Technical Support said they do not provide static IP addresses, so it couldn't be done. Something tells me that is not true.
Has anyone had any luck with WildBlue?
    Many thanks
