Apple Remote Desktop - Pre purchase advice please!

I received a Mac Lab this year and I am looking for the best way to administer it.
Here is what I have available:
1 MacBook (Last gen white)
20 MacBook Pro 13 (New this year)
10 MacPro g5
I use the white MacBook as my main computer (for now).
Questions:
Do I need a server to use ARD?
Will I be able to administer the older G5's?
Can I do it all from my white MacBook?
Is there a better option in the same price range?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

  • HT200213 How do I purchase Apple Remote Desktop but install a previous version for my 10.6.8 Mac?

I need to install Apple Remote Desktop to help a client but the App store only shows that the latest version is compatible with OS X 10.7. I found where I can download the 3.5.3 version of the app (compatible with OS X 10.6.8) but when I try to install it, it says it can't install because it can't find where the app is currently installed in order to update it. I don't want to pay the $80 for the latest version only to find that it won't install on my 10.6.8 and still be unable to install an older version of the app that DOES work with 10.6.8. Any ideas what I should do? I don't have a problem paying the $80 but I just need to make sure I will be able to use the software I pay for.
    Please Help.
    Thanks

Ok, maybe I have answered my own questions in doing more research. I guess if I want/need the latest version and I have OS X 10.7, I can purchase it from the app store. If I need a previous version, I can purchase a retail packaging version of Apple Remote Desktop 3 from various vendors online. Once purchased and installed, I should be able to install update 3.5.3 to be on the latest version my OS will support. Does that sound correct? I just want to make sure I do this right.

  • If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?

I have several friends and family who are looking for a central place to access information from ( Pictures, home movies etc ).  So I am considering setting up an OSX Lion Server.  There are some other things I can use it for as well.
    Here is my question:
If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?  Or would I have to install the Admin software on each?  Do they intend it to be used strictly as one admin to access many clients?
I always could set up a network drive so they can log in and just see the folders they have created with space on the server I provide them.  But I want them to be able to log an and actually use it as a Remote Desktop.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Dave,
Thanks for the feedback.  I understand that ARD is meant for Remote Administration, but I was not sure if it could be used for my purpose as well.  The reason I was looking to do it this was was because I read several articles online about security and performance issues with setting up VNC and activating screen sharing.  Unless I am misunderstood.
As far as people's activities on the server, mostly it is going to be used as a place for them to store their media.  I will only allow own person ( Who I trust and I know wont botch the server ), to run applications.  Everyone else will be restricted to uploading and downloading content to their designated account on the server as well as a community share on the server.
    I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Apple remote desktop 3.7.2 has update that can not install. Product was purchased as shrink wrap

I have just updated to Yosemite on my 2009 MBP and am informed that I have an Apple Remote Desktop update to apply in the App Store.
Product was purchased as shrink wrap a few years ago with 3 user licences. However I can't apply the update
Looking at the version numbers they seem the same at 3.7.2
How can I get this updated so I am not pestered in the App Store?

I was able to download the ARD 3.5.2 Client and take the customisations from the generated custom client installer.
To do this you need to expand the Custom Installer to a directory somewhere (in this example I'll expand it to a directory on the desktop)
    pkgutil --expand CustomClientInstaller.pkg ~/Desktop/CustomClientInstaller
Inside the expanded package, there are 3 files which are appended with "_entries" which seem to contain the customisations that are specified during the package generation process. So, we need to copy these to a temporary location...
    cp ~/Desktop/CustomClientInstaller/RemoteDesktopClient.pkg/Scripts/Tools/*_entries ~/Desktop
Now, what we need to do is expand the ARD Client we just downloaded (3.5.2) and apply the customisations to it...
    pkgutil --expand RemoteDesktopClient.pkg ~/Desktop/RemoteDesktopClient
    cp ~/Desktop/*_entries ~/Desktop/RemoteDesktopClient/RemoteDesktopClient.pkg/Scripts/Tools
    pkgutil --flatten ~/Desktop/RemoteDesktopClient CustomRemoteDesktopClient.pkg
You should now have an up-to-date customised ARD client. Note that I have not fully tested all of the options, such as creating users. It may be necessary to look at this post if the newly customised ARD client has problems creating a new user.
    Hope that helps

  • How Can I Control a Windows PC from Apple Remote Desktop Please?

    Hello Everybody
    Please excuse my bad English.
I would like to ask you, how could be possibile setup windows pc (XP or 7) to be controlled by a Mac with Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.2
I think I have to use VNC, but how can i SETUP to connect XP or 7 to my Mac Apple Remote Desktop in the same LAN?
    Thanks a lot
    Giovanni

You can use ARD to remote control a windows machines, ARD is built on VNC
You'll have to install a VNC server on the windows machine you want to access
You won't be able to use most of the ARD features as they are specific to mac
You'll be be able to see and control the desktop and that's about it
You can also find VNC /Remote Desktop apps in the iOS store that will allow remote desktop connection from iPad /iPhone,
There is a mac version of Microsoft remote desktop in the Mac App Store

  • Apple Remote desktop connection with different internet network

I did purchase "Apple Remote Desktop"in mac app store, it works well in the same wifi's network but when i try to use different network, but i won't connect.
It said " Please make sure Screen Sharing in the System preference", but it won't works as well.
    Please help
    Mac OS: 10.9.1
    Apple Remote Desktop: 3.7.1

The first thing I'd suggest is that you talk to your network support group and make sure that the necessary IP ports, primarly 3283 and 5900, are open between the two networks. If those are blocked, ARD can't connect.
    Hope that helps.

  • Apple Remote desktop connections to anoter compter though the internet

I recently purchased Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 and I was told that it can be used to remotely connect to another computer at my office from my home. I have tried to add it by add computer by address but it comes up with an error message and can not connect. I am sure I have the right IP and user name/password. If you can please give me any documents on how to do this task and or tell me step by step how to do it. thanks I just want to remote log in in to a mac that on another network using remote desktop. Any help would be awesome. Thanks

The subject of connecting ARD via the Internet has been covered here many times already. Search the forum for "Internet" and you should find multiple posts on the topic. You can also look at this web page if it's back on line (it was down when I last tried it):
    http://www.starklmc.com/ard.htm
It should help, though you may have to refer to your router's documentation for specifics on opening and forward ports in that particular unit.

  • Install Apple Remote Desktop

when i try to install it, after the installer finish i don't find the program

  • The licensing cost for Apple Remote Desktop is not clear

I can see that Apple Remote Desktop costs $80/£55, but is this per-seat or is this the admin software?
The only other information I can find is that there is some unlimited admin cost option, but the costs are really very unclear. Please can someone state what the costs are?
I'm not an IT admin but am looking for something for our IT department because I need to deploy fonts and Office templates to around 80 Macs.
If ARD is extortionate, what are the alternatives?

The copy of ARD sold in the Mac App Store is the adminstration application (the client is bundled with all Mac OS X installations), and is for working with an unlimited number of clients. For personal use you are licensed to install the admin software on every machine you own or control. For business use you need to purchase one copy for every computer on which you wish to install that admin application. This is detailed in the software licence which you can access and read by clicking the License Agreement link in the page for ARD in the App Store.

  • How can I deploy my AAMEE without Apple Remote Desktop?

    Hi everyone,
I created a build for Adobe CS6 Production Premium for Mac with the serial number embedded, along with the current updates. All is well with that; however, this is the issue that I am having:
I have tried to test the build on a local machine (the computer I created the build on) and was able to install the package with no issues; however, when I try to deploy build onto a networked machine, it doesn't work.
I have read through the AAMEE Reference Guide and have read (if I am not mistaken) that for CS6, you can only deploy an AAMEE build through Apple Remote Desktop onto multiple machines. I have also read that you would need Apple Remote Desktop on all of the machines you want the build to deploy on.
If that is case, if I have read the guide correctly, what is the point of deploying the build through a network if you have to still install ARD onto all the machines you want the software one? How can you get around this to be able to deploy your AAMEE successfully onto a network on machines?
When I tried it last night on one network Mac with ARD, I received the error message for "Validating packages...". I'm not sure what that means because the build works perfectly on local machine.
Any ideas would help as far as deploying the build on a network without using ARD, or really, just a simpler alternative that works?
    PLEASE HELP.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You can deploy package using any of these tools - ARD, SSH, Casper suite, Absolute manage, Land desk..and may be more but we have only tried these.
We have mentioned ARD as an example, but other standard tools can be very well used for deploying package. and there is no need to have ARD installed on all machines where you want to deploy the package, but only on admin machine.
can you please let me know - which client OS are you trying to deploy the package and whether the client machine is logged or logged in? please forward install.log if you are facing the error.
    thanks,

  • Shutdown a remote iMac using Apple Remote Desktop and Automator action

    Hi,
I have my iMac and my wife's iMac connected to the same UPS. There is only one USB connector for the UPS that notifies my iMac when its time to shutdown due to a power cut out.
Is there a way for my iMac to then send a command to my wife's iMac (which may be asleep; the iMac not my wife!) and instruct it to shutdown (forcefully)?
The Belkin UPS software enables me to launch an automator action before it shuts down my computer.
    Your help would be appreciated,
    Tony

Unless you already have Apple Remote Desktop, it will almost certainly be cheaper to just buy a second UPS for your wife's iMac than it will be to purchase ARD.
If you do have ARD 3 already, then it looks like it would be possible to create an Automator workflow that would select your wife's iMac and then send the Unix command "shutdown" (look at the man page for shutdown for the usage). I haven't tried doing this, though, so I can't say for sure, but it looks like it would work.

  • How can I get Apple Remote Desktop to disappear from my App Store updates list?

My Apple Remote Desktop software shows up in my App Store updates list.  But I have already updated it to version 3.6.1 and it shows as "Installed".  It is greyed out and will not go away.  Any ideas on how to make it disappear is most appreciated.

All the suggestions I have read have not worked for me.
    But you can try:
Running Software Update from the Apple Menu
Logging in to the Mac App Store with the account that purchased ARD
Deleting various Apple Store .plist files
NB I haven't tried removind ARD and reinstalling.

  • How to set Updates with 11.3 when using Apple Remote Desktop for installation?

So for all pre-11.3 versions of Flash Player on OSX, I have just pulled out the "Adobe Flash Player.pkg" installer package from the installer .dmg and used Apple Remote Desktop to deploy Flash to the Macs I manage.
However, when doing that with Flash 11.3, this leaves the "Updates" setting in the Flash Player System Preference set to "Notify me to install updates".
I'd like to push something that would set this to "Allow Adobe to install updates".
Is there a way to modify the .pkg installer to have the System Preference set to that value (or push/copy some other .plist file to the clients to have that setting enabled?)
    Thanks!

I poked around a bit and the file seems to be:
    /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/mms.cfg
I'd like to get some confirmation from Adobe that this is the correct file to push, though (it seems like it as it only contains this):
    AutoUpdateDisable=0
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1

  • Apple Remote Desktop not connecting

I have set up new iMac with OSX.8.3 and released the remote administration as I did before on many other devices.
In the Apple Remote Desktop window I can see the computer and it presents itself as any other computer also, to which I have access to (available, current user etc)
However, when I try to connect I get in the LAN immediately "connection failed".
From outside via VPN I get this message:
Please make sure that the remote administration (in System Preferences "Shares") is enabled on the computer to which you want to connect. Also make sure that your network connection is working correctly.
Here, after all, is an indication, albeit an improper. I can see the computer in the list of the ARD window and that it is available. But cannot connect either
I have tried with and without firewall, with no success. In addition, in the firewall the Remote Administration is enabled.
I am little perplexed. (With TeamViewer I can connect)

Thanks a lot for your help

is the computer on and awake when you try to connect?
    Yes it is
on the new imac, have you verified remote management is enabled?
Yes I did (the computer IS visible in the Remote Desktop list, I can see what app is running, which user account is active )
if no, have you tried enabling it? (apple menu, system preferences, show all, sharing, check remote management)
    its correctly done
If yes, have you tried unchecking it, and then re-checking it?
    Will try it
if still no, is the user your try to connect with listed in remote management?
Yes it is listed (however I checked the option for all user)
if so, what about deleting and then re-adding the user your try to connect with?
    Will try that
if no, what about adding the user to the list?
I was creating already a new user, no improvement
while connected to the same lan as the imac. Have you tried deleting the computer record for the imac from your ARD, and re-adding the client?
    Will try that
Is both computers connect to the network the same way? if so, what are the IP address you get on both computers?
yes they are. We have manual attributed IPs in the same range
