Apple remote pairing problems

Now, to the absolute best of my ability I have scoured the internet for a solution and coming up short.
I have recently purchased a standard apple remote to use with my Macbook and am getting no where.
I have followed every possible combination with the remote, followed the Security sections with the checked box etc.
I have used a friend's remote and am unable to pair his remote (which works fine with his MBP) and that isn't working either.
So this would lead me to believe there is something wrong with my Macbook, however according to these Candelair program I installed, it appears the IR is working fine.
What can I do?

Hello i came across this thread when trying to pair my remote that i had ordered with my mini....the remote did not come with any instructions...so i did not know how to pair.
Go to 'system preferences' -> ''security'. On the general tab there is a padlock "click the lock to make changes" -- go ahead & click that padlock icon. Enter your admin pw when prompted THEN try to pair (menu&play buttons) your slick aluminum remote.
I didnt see any chainlink icon on the screen, but the remote is paired and works just fine (front row).
This mini is my first mac product - so pardon me if this pairing procedure is common knowledge. Hopefully it will help someone who finds themselves in the same situation as i was.
(disclaimer: this 2010 mini is my first apple product and i still primarily use windows7)

  • IPod Touch - Apple Remote App Problem

    Hi there,
I am having problems with getting the Apple Remote App to work with my computer.
I have installed the app on my iPod. I go to pair it with my computer and it doesnt show up in iTunes. I have the latest itunes.
My iPod will connect to my laptop (running vista)
I have disabled the firewall, and that still hasn't helped.
My computer is wired into the router using an ethernet cable.
My iPod is connected to the router using the wireless.
My computer is on a domain. Could that be some of the problem?
Thanks for the help in advance

  • OS X Lion and Apple remote control problem

After installing OS X Lion my apple remote control no longer works properly.  The menu wont come up on the screen, but it plays music if you press the buttons, but you are riding blind, can anyone help on this one?

It's not a problem with the remote, the problem is that Lion no longer has FrontRow.

  • Apple Remote Pairing: Isn't pairing

So up until now I really never had a need to, but I recently purchased an AppleTV which is in the same room as my iMac. I have now paired the AppleTV remote to the AppleTV and paired my iMac's remote to it, however my iMac is still taking orders from the AppleTV's remote and vice versa. I don't know what else I can do. I really don't want to turn the remote abilities off on my iMac. Thanks for the help to all that answer.

Weird.  Hold menu and left arrow on the physical remote for 6 secs to see if that helps.

  • Multiple Apple Remotes no longer work with Apple TV!

I've been using Apple TVs since the minute Steve Jobs introduced them in 2007. I bought the 2nd and 3rd Generation Apple TVs the minute each of them were introduced. I've been watching every Apple Keynote Address since they were available online or on CDs from the early 1990s, on my HDTV via my latest Apple TV when that was possible. I watch far more TV through my Apple TV than via my Cable Box, much of it music and music videos from iTunes on my 2006 Mac Pro! But as of YESTERDAY I am seriously thinking of getting another, ANY OTHER manufacturer's similar internet streaming box!!!
WHY??? Because YESTERDAY, for no apparent reason except some programmer's or software engineer's stupidity, my Apple TV stopped working with all but ONE of my Apple REMOTES!!!
Why is that stupid? Because, in my household there are three people who use Apple TV all day, and each of them have an aluminum Apple Remote which they all use to control what the Apple TV is streaming. We have two other Apple Remotes lying around in case one of us misplaces his or her Apple Remote, which happens occasionally. ALL FIVE of the Apple Remotes, just like the beige plastic Apple Remotes that they replaced, always worked with all three of my Apple TVs! Then yesterday, suddenly, only the LAST Apple Remote that was paired with this 3rd Generation Apple TV is able to control it.
I've spent HOURS trying to fix this. This wasn't caused by an Automatic Update to the Apple TV's iOS; there has been no update in recent days. I've got Automatic Update turned on, just as I, a good Apple citizen, have my Apple TV set up to automatically send back Usage Data to Apple. I've rebooted my Apple TV. I've put brand new 2032 button batteries into my Apple Remotes. I pulled the power cord out of my Apple TV for 15 seconds and again for five minutes and then restarted it. As per instructions, I have Unpaired and re-Paired each and all of my 5 Apple Remotes. All to no avail. Only the last Apple Remote that was paired with the Apple TV works! Horrible. And STUPID, if it was a deliberate programming decision and it was introduced in a minor automatic update.
Worse, I've been using the Remote app on my 5th Generation iPod touch to replace ONE of the unusable Apple Remotes, and as of a couple of minutes ago even THAT stopped working with my Apple TV! Well, I was able to fix that fairly easily by pairing the iPod touch Remote app with my Mac Pro and then pairing it again with my Apple TV. But I don't think that solution would be so easy for many non-technologically-inclined users. I also don't think that a $200 or $300 iPod touch is a very acceptable replacement for a $20 Apple Remote, especially since everyone buys iPod touches for totally different uses (I use mine primarily for taking notes using voice-activated audio or video -- it is by far the best device for that purpose out there -- police departments should take note).
I'm hoping that this multiple Apple Remote problem somehow resolves itself, unless it is a hardware problem with my Apple TV. If so, I can hold out until Apple's media event next week, which I HOPE will premiere a new 4th Generation Apple TV, hopefully which will once again allow my five Apple Remotes to all control my Apple TV interdependently, without having to Unpair and Pair each one each time you wanted to use it, requiring you to quit whichever Apple TV app you were using each time, or alternatively to use Sneaker-Net to deliver the one working Apple Remote to each person who wants to use it, which can be difficult since at least one of the users is very ill! (Whew! A long sentence. But I hope you get the point.)
Two days ago, I could never have imagined myself getting a Roku or an Amazon, Sony, Microsoft or some other streaming device. It just proves how fast a stupid little decision (if it was deliberate) can turn EVERYTHING around!

People have a misconception with remote pairing (as does the description on this page -> Pairing your Apple Remote with your computer - Apple Support).
    The 1st paragraph is incorrect.
    The 2nd paragraph is correct.
"If you have several Mac computers or an Apple TV that use the Apple remote, or other devices with integrated infrared ("IR") receivers in one room, you can "pair" your Apple Remote with a specific Apple device so it doesn't interfere with other Apple devices or IR devices nearby.
Pairing allows you to set the receiving Apple device so that only it can be controlled by one remote. Learn how to pair your Apple Remote"
Pairing sets the device to read only a specific remote.
It does not set a specific remote to work only with a specific device. ie. if you point th remote at another Apple device (that is not paired) it will control it.

  • Unable to pair Apple Remote App with iTunes

I am running a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965 with Windows Vista SP 2. My iTunes software is 8.2.1.6, and my iPhone 3GS is running OS 3.0.1 (7A400). Both the Satellite and iPhone are connected to the same WiFi local network, and yet the App "Remote" by Apple Software is unable to communicate with iTunes to allow the entry of the four digit code to establish control of the iTunes library. Shortly after purchasing the iPhone 3GS I purchased the Satellite, but in the couple of weeks between the purchases the Remote App worked fine on my Gateway running Windows XP SP2. I have been through Apple Telephone support twice, and have really run one of the technicians through the mill researching possible solutions. I have visited an Apple Store Genius, who could find no reason for the problem. The iPhone and Remote App worked perfectly well on the store's WiFi and Mac, but his iPhone also wouldn't work with my laptop. I have been through Kaspersky's technical support system to ensure that there isn't a firewall issue. They have assured me, after reviewing logs from my laptop, that this is not the case. I even went so far as to uninstall all my Kaspersky product, but the Apple Remote App still would not function properly. I have updated the router's firmware, and checked that the laptop's wireless card is running the latest driver. At this point I can't think of anything else to try but would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Steve

    Monday 7th Jan.
Just to say that Apple did call me this am to discuss the problem on foot of a call I made last week.
In the meantime the remote worked with both a 2007 IMac and a 2009 laptop but not on the m-mini.
When I tried  pairing this morning during the call by pressing Menu and next together it paired.
The change is very subtle, it just says paired in the advanced section of the security et sl section as referred before, with a fleeting 2 intersecting rings icon.
The big difference is that Front Row is gone....
The remote only works to a limited degree within some apps such as iTunes and iPhotos.
In theory it controls the volume in iTunes but as of now for me  it doesnt....:( need to look more.
As to what the problem was:
It seems there is a set of keyboard combinations that can be used to force a  reset the ID of the remote, the suggestion is  MAYBE that by getting it to work on the iMac and laptop in some way reset the ID.
This stuff  is WAY beyond my skill level:)
I did impress upon Apple the need to look at the issue in threads like this....

  • Im havingtrouble pairing a new apple remote with apple.tv. Any suggestions? Have followed directions so far.

Im havingtrouble pairing a new apple remote with apple.tv. Any suggestions? Have followed directions so far.

A classic chicken/egg problem. I see this in the Apple TV manual:
You can also hold down Menu and Right for 6 seconds to pair Apple TV and the Apple Remote.
When you successfully pair your Apple Remote, Apple TV displays a chainlink symbol (          ) above a picture of a remote. Apple TV now works only with the paired remote.
You might have to change your screen name (kidding).

  • Can't pair Apple Remote and MacBook Pro + Answer

I had an issue pairing my Apple Remote with my MacBook Pro.
The Apple manual says (on page 36):
To pair your Apple Remote with your MacBook Pro:
1 Position the Apple Remote 3 to 4 inches from the IR receiver on your MacBook Pro.
2 Press and hold the Menu and Next/Fast-forward buttons on the Apple Remote for 5 seconds.
After trying and failing several times to pair my remote using these instructions I gave up. While it could be a bit annoying not to have the remote paired it was not a significant enough issue to prompt me to send the notebook in for repair.
After a few days I decided that there must be a software conflict causing this problem since the remote works fine otherwise.
I scoured the net for a solution and found nothing. It seemed I was the only one with this problem.
Based on the premise that you should push all of the buttons and see what happens I tried several other button combinations on the remote. To my surprise holding the Menu + Play/Pause buttons together for five seconds paired the remote with my MacBook Pro.
I have unpaired and then re-paired the remote several times with this alternate button combination and it works every time.

My MacBook Pro didn't seem to work with the Apple Remote either, but it turned out that I needed to logout and back in before the system preferences recognised the pairing. This might be something to try if there doesn't seem to be any response from the computer .

  • Can't pair apple remote

Hi!, I need some help. I've been trying to pair my apple remote (6 buttons) and I just can’t do it. The apple remote is from an old iMac that is not even here and I’m trying to pair it with a brand new (iMac 14,1 ME086E/A, model: A1418). I’ve been looking for the unpair option in the Security Pane but there’s none. I tried multiple combinations with the remote buttons but it’s not working. So i’m starting to think it doesn’t have IR, because the remote is working fine with another mac (i paired and unpaired it without a problem) and the battery is new.
I hope you can guide me, thanks in advance.

New Macs no longer have built-in IR receivers any longer for remote operation and the more recent versions of OS X have no remote control software or programming code to use the older Apple remotes any longer.
If you want to control your new iMac remotely and you own a mobile iDevice, there are remote apps you can use on both your iMac and iDevice.
These apps work over Wifi and/or Bluetooth.
Apple has its own iOS remote app simply called Remote.
Another, which I use and is very comprehensive remote iOS app, is called Rowmote Pro by a developer called Regular & Rhythm.
If you want complete and total remote control access to your Mac, look at iOS app Splashtop Remote.
There is also a dedicated WifI and/or Bluetooth remote for Macs and iDevices by a company called Satechi.
    Found here.
    http://www.amazon.com/Satechi-MediaRemote-Bluetooth-Multi-Media-Control/dp/B0082 4948U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391729056&sr=8-1&keywords=Satechi+remote
    Good Luck!

  • Apple Remote and Mac mini wont pair

My remote works fine with Mac mini and Plex and Sofa Control. But I am unable to pair them. The settings are right and when I press Menu + Fwd nothing happens, no Pairing icon on the screen.
The situation is a frustration since I have an Apple TV besides connected to a second Apple Remote. Since my Mac mini wont pair, the Apple TV remote controls them both.
Does anyone had a similar problem and found a sollution?

Does it pair if the ATV remote is disabled?

  • Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.1 lag problem

    Hello,
Since updating to Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.0, I have had this problem. I just updated to 3.7.1 and the problem is still occuring.
I am using RealVNC Viewer 5.0.6 Windows 64bit on a Windows 7 machine to connect to my Mac through Apple Remote Desktop VNC.
It's tricky to describe the problem, but I'll do my best:
Remote desktop is quick and responsive (I'm using it over an internal network)... Except for the last frame of any sequence of frames. For example, if I scroll a window quickly, the intermediate frames showing the scrolling come through quickly... But the last frame that my screen settles on takes up to a full second before it comes through.
You can reproduce this problem most easily by opening up a terminal, typing a command, then pressing return. Or, press return multiple times in rapid succession: The first few returns come through fast, but the last one always comes through slow, up to a full second later.
I never had this problem before the 3.7.0 update. Any progress on fixing this issue?
    Thanks,
    Allen

I agree the new Remote Desktop 3.7.1 is very laggy. All my machine are up to date with patch, same issue..

  • HT1551 How do I pair multiple apple remotes with the same apple TV

I have one apple TV but it is is access on multiple screens via a matrix system. I therefore need an apple remote in each room so I am not having to carry the same one from room to room. Please can someone let me know how this is achieved . . .

It's almost counter-intuitive the way this works. You have to actually "unpair" the remote that it is paired to - then once no specific Apple TV remote is paired, all remotes (any remote, including standard TV remotes) will work!
    The step-by-step would be:
Using a remote that is currently paired navigate to General under settings.
    Go to Remotes.
    Select "Unpair Apple Remote"
Once unpaired, simply back out of all the menus using the menu button to see that it does work. Then try on your other remote(s). It/they will now also work.
You can even use the Learn Remote feature to use a standard TV remote. I use my Directv remote and it works great.
The ONLY thing you need pairing for is if you want only one remote to be capable of controlling the ATV. So therefore unpair any remote that's paired, and you'll be golden.

  • Problem with ipod dock and apple remote

I have a problem with my apple remote and my 5th gen ipod on a dock. I set it up and plug it into a TV, yet when i get into a music video playlist- it will only play 4 songs (the same ones) and then go back to the song selection screen. The same thing happens in the movie "tab" as well.
    Any ideas?

    btabz,
Thanks for your response. No the iPod doesn't respond at all--the volume display doesn't come up or change.
When I press the play/pause or either skip forward or back on the remote, the iPod, while on the dock, lights up and responds to the command as it should. But when I press volume up or down on the remote the iPod does not respond at all.
According to Apple's store info on the remote, the volume up/down controls should work. I am wondering if maybe it doesn't work with the 3Gs for some reason. But if that is the case, Apple should indicate that. It is kind of frustrating to not be able to adjust the volume.
    Thanks,

  • Can't pair apple remote to mbp

I've been searching for a while now but all the solutions found did not fix the pairing issue I encounter between my Macbook Pro and the apple remote.
I've a Apple TV and a Macbook Pro. Both I want to control with a apple remote. Now pairing should do the trick as the device will only listen to the paired remote. I've paired the Apple TV but I can not get the remote paired to my MBP. Following the instructions on apples website does not work.
    Solutions found:
Hold Menu + Right - FAIL
Hold Menu + Play - FAIL
Checked all other key combinations - FAIL
However the remotes woring fine using them just made sure they work correct. I checked the functioning of the remote by holding it in front of the webcam. It showed the IR light on cam so the remotes are functioning well. (IR is visible on CMOS cameras)
Anybody a bright idea on how to pair the remote to my MBP?
    Thanx in advance.

    Hi Sig,
That box is not checked. Thanx for the thoughtful idea.
I found the cause of the issue about an hour ago. Within XBMC I had the apple remote active. Although the application is not running it did prevent me from pairing the remote. Once turned of in XBMC I was able to pair the remote using the menu+play key combination.
    Thanx again for your thought.
