Apple Remote Tap or Press

This issue pertains to the little white remote control hardware that comes with so many Apple devices (like iMac, MacBook, Apple TV, etc.) I'm trying to pair my Apple Remote with an IR emitting Universal Remote MX700 that is part of my home theater to control the Apple TV.
Not sure of the correct terminology at Apple, but I'll be using the terms "Tap" for short and "Press" for long commands to avoid further references to iPod Touch, or Pushing via the 3G network.
Tapping one of the buttons on the Apple Remote performs a different task than pressing and holding the same button. It appears that the same IR code is issued for either task, but one is a longer version of the command.
The Universal Remote MX700 device may not be capable of distinguishing the difference between tap and press. I am working closely with their tech support folks and will update this discussion when I find out.
In the mean time, does Apple TV recognize an alternative short (tap) command equivalent for their long (press) commands? If it turns out that the Universal Remote MX700 can not emit long commands, then if there is an equivalent short command, I can train the device with this workaround.

The word from Universal Remote is that this kind of programming is not within the capabilities of their older MX700. However, I'm still waiting to find out if Apple or anyone else knows a workaround. It's awfully quiet out there! I hope someone has some insights into this challenge.
PS. I switched to iPhone a couple of weeks ago. I'm currently underwhelmed with the quality of AT&T's signal compared to my former Verizon service. I guess there's 30 days to put it all back in the box and return it to AT&T and Apple. Verizon will have me back during the first 90 days without penalty.

could you try to explain more about what issue it is you are having
did you change the input source on your tv so it show other things then the appletv such an dvd or sat box?
did you turn off the appletv with the apple remote and don't know how to turn it on again?
when you say appletv do you mean some special part of the appletv software which you have no longer access to but "other stuff" being other parts of the appletvs functionality is still avaible?

I got a apple remote but the menu does not appear on the computer when pressing the menu bottom!?

Prior to Lion, it used to invoke the menu of the FrontRow application.  FrontRow is no longer available with Lion.  The menu button will work with apple TV.

  • TS1741 Apple remote app on iPad & iPhone cannot find library

I have used the Apple remote app on my ipad in the past, controlling my computer and also my stereo using airport express.  I haven't used it in a few months, decided to have another look at it and have run into trouble.  I keep getting 'could not find' when I try to add my itunes library.
Itunes can see my iPad, when I try to add the library it pops up in ituned to put the passcode in.  My wifi is working fine in the house on both iPad and iPhone.  I have deleted and re-added the app, upgraded to the new itunes, restarted computer, tried using the Remote App on my iphone.  All the same thing.  I've also done everything in the help section for the problem.
Please help, I really need this to work as we are having a big party and was going to use this instead of a juke box.

Try quitting the app and then reset your iPad.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it jiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • I can't connect to my iTunes library on my Macbook Pro using the Apple Remote app on my iPhone 4S. Why?

    Hi all,
I've been looking through the forums for help with this problem. There are a couple of threads with similar problems, but no solved threads and the discussion doesn't seem to go anywhere... As far as I can tell, it's been causing a lot of annoyance for many users, including myself, but it looks like the community's in the dark about why it's happening!
I'm trying to connect to my iTunes library using the Apple Remote app on my new iPhone 4S. As you may know, there are two ways to do this:
Connect via Home Sharing by setting up Home Sharing on both iTunes and the iPhone, or
Connecting directly to iTunes using a four digit passcode.
I've tried both methods, and neither work!
Here's what happens for each method:
From the Remote app start screen, I tap the "Turn on Home Sharing" button. I enter my Apple ID details (which are definitely correct), and get a confirmation message on my phone saying "Home Sharing is on using [my email address]. To control iTunes: Choose Turn On Home Sharing from the Advanced menu in iTunes on your computer." I then go to iTunes, turn on Home Sharing, enter my Apple ID again and get a confirmation message saying "Home Sharing is now on", etc. However, there's no connection formed between my iPhone and my Macbook Pro - the Remote app just shows a message saying "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account [my email address].
From the Remote app start screen, I tap "Add an iTunes Library", and the four digit passcode is shown on my phone. I select the new "Quintin's iPhone" item that appears in the iTunes sidebar under "Devices", and enter the passcode on the screen that appears. Once I've entered it, I get a confirmation message saying "Your Remote is now able to control iTunes" with an "Okay" button. Clicking the "Okay" button makes the screen and the sidebar item disappear completely. On my phone, a message that says "Looking for ..." is shown on the screen with a spinning loading wheel, but nothing happens. After a minute or two, it stops and simply says "Could not find".
After trying both methods, I went through all of the troubleshooting steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1741 . Absolutely no effect.
I should mention that I was experiencing similar problems on my old iPhone 3Gs with an older version of iTunes. I thought it might have been some kind of hardware fault and expected it to clear up once I got the new phone, but the problem is still there. It's a new phone, a new computer, a newer version an iTunes... even a different network I'm trying to connect to it on. Bizarre!
I've even tried using the Mobile Air Mouse remote application instead. However again, the Mobile Air Mouse app on my phone can't pick up the Mobile Air Mouse server on my Mac.
I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. Anyone?

I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2.  My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone).  I  was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.

  • Unable to pair Apple Remote App with iTunes

I am running a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965 with Windows Vista SP 2. My iTunes software is 8.2.1.6, and my iPhone 3GS is running OS 3.0.1 (7A400). Both the Satellite and iPhone are connected to the same WiFi local network, and yet the App "Remote" by Apple Software is unable to communicate with iTunes to allow the entry of the four digit code to establish control of the iTunes library. Shortly after purchasing the iPhone 3GS I purchased the Satellite, but in the couple of weeks between the purchases the Remote App worked fine on my Gateway running Windows XP SP2. I have been through Apple Telephone support twice, and have really run one of the technicians through the mill researching possible solutions. I have visited an Apple Store Genius, who could find no reason for the problem. The iPhone and Remote App worked perfectly well on the store's WiFi and Mac, but his iPhone also wouldn't work with my laptop. I have been through Kaspersky's technical support system to ensure that there isn't a firewall issue. They have assured me, after reviewing logs from my laptop, that this is not the case. I even went so far as to uninstall all my Kaspersky product, but the Apple Remote App still would not function properly. I have updated the router's firmware, and checked that the laptop's wireless card is running the latest driver. At this point I can't think of anything else to try but would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Steve

    Monday 7th Jan.
Just to say that Apple did call me this am to discuss the problem on foot of a call I made last week.
In the meantime the remote worked with both a 2007 IMac and a 2009 laptop but not on the m-mini.
When I tried  pairing this morning during the call by pressing Menu and next together it paired.
The change is very subtle, it just says paired in the advanced section of the security et sl section as referred before, with a fleeting 2 intersecting rings icon.
The big difference is that Front Row is gone....
The remote only works to a limited degree within some apps such as iTunes and iPhotos.
In theory it controls the volume in iTunes but as of now for me  it doesnt....:( need to look more.
As to what the problem was:
It seems there is a set of keyboard combinations that can be used to force a  reset the ID of the remote, the suggestion is  MAYBE that by getting it to work on the iMac and laptop in some way reset the ID.
This stuff  is WAY beyond my skill level:)
I did impress upon Apple the need to look at the issue in threads like this....

  • How do you get the apple remote to STOP always launching iTunes????

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I have discovered a few annoyances. The biggest one is that the Apple remote is always launching iTunes when I use it. Even when the Finder is not the target app.
I have my entire Star Trek collection on a firewire drive, and I like using VLC to watch them because of the playlist feature. Every time I use the Apple remote to try to skip to the next episode, it launches iTunes and begins playing music. This NEVER happened before in Leopard or Tiger.
I have gone through the iTunes preferences and also looked for some obscure system preference to deal with this issue, but so far, no luck.
Again, the]is NEVER happened under previous operating systems, so I'm going to assume it's a glitch in Snow Leopard.
Does anyone know what's happening here??
    Help me obi-wan.

    HI,
Open System Preferences/Security and turn Disable remote control infrared receiver.
You may have to click the gold padlock icon to do this. You will be prompted for your
    Admin password.
Also, when you come across a "bug", report it to Apple.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
And it seems you are not alone...

You can try to re "Pair' the remote also.
To pair an Apple Remote with your computer:
Hold the remote close to the computer (3 to 4 inches away) and point the remote at the front of the computer.
Press and hold both the Menu and Next buttons on the remote until the paired-remote icon appears on your screen (about 5 seconds).
    To unpair an Apple Remote:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security, and then click General.
Open the General pane of Security preferences
    Click Unpair.

  • Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.1 lag problem

    Hello,
Since updating to Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.0, I have had this problem. I just updated to 3.7.1 and the problem is still occuring.
I am using RealVNC Viewer 5.0.6 Windows 64bit on a Windows 7 machine to connect to my Mac through Apple Remote Desktop VNC.
It's tricky to describe the problem, but I'll do my best:
Remote desktop is quick and responsive (I'm using it over an internal network)... Except for the last frame of any sequence of frames. For example, if I scroll a window quickly, the intermediate frames showing the scrolling come through quickly... But the last frame that my screen settles on takes up to a full second before it comes through.
You can reproduce this problem most easily by opening up a terminal, typing a command, then pressing return. Or, press return multiple times in rapid succession: The first few returns come through fast, but the last one always comes through slow, up to a full second later.
I never had this problem before the 3.7.0 update. Any progress on fixing this issue?
    Thanks,
    Allen

I agree the new Remote Desktop 3.7.1 is very laggy. All my machine are up to date with patch, same issue..

  • How can I use apple remote with Mountain Lion? Any Front Row alternative?

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
All great except for my Apple Remote control.
Before, I could effectively control my iMac media with Apple Remote by using Front Row (music, photos, videos, good integration with iTunes and iPhoto).
Now, as I understand, Front Row is expired.
So, my Apple remote still works but with very limited options (just music, forward, backward and volume), and it's a real pity.
Any of you Guys know how to restore Front Row?
Otherwise maybe suggest an alternative (sth similar, should allow iMac media control by Apple Remote)?
So far I tried to restore all Front Row files by a Time Capsule Snow Leopard backup (as indicatred on some other Communities).
To restore was easy, but then, no way to launch it.
    Any advice will help!
    Thanks in advance/all the best.
    Marco

Thanks Klaus1 for your prompt answer, although I went again through a dated discussion.
I also got the feeling that somehow they want to push Apple TV..
But, respectfully speaking towards our Friends at Apple, is it fair to promise what you don't deliver?
I have choosen apple because I percive it's different.
    At currently published link: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC377Z/A/apple-remote
    they do promote the following:
    Apple Remote with Mac
The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It works with Front Row - a menu-based, full-screen interface - to make accessing the digital content on your Mac as simple as navigating your iPod. When you press the Menu button, your desktop fades and the sleek, Front Row interface takes its place, to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Videos folder and your DVDs. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slide show, a home video that you made in iMovie, even a film trailer.
Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in infrared (IR) receiver. Not compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Cost for this is 15£ (19€).
Now, I have iMac and Mac Book Pro (no retina display) both with Mountain Lion installed, and I understand both of them are not compatible with Front Row.
Actually I adore apple tv and I got 2 at home nicely working on 2 different TVs.
So I accomplished twice their wish of selling this product to me.
Why shall they deceive me (and many others, as I read) by killing a still promised service?
Should I read all forums before buying a trusted-brand-product like apple, to ensure that id does what declared?
Don't get me wrong, I'm an enthusiast user of the whole apple family, since many years, and still I am.
Just politely complaining for this decision, which creates to Many an easy avoidable disservice.
    Cheers
    Marco

  • Apple Remote stopped working with Lion on iMac

My white Apple Remote does not work with Lion on my iMac 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo anymore.
I'm sure it was working recently as I was able to control the volume on my RadioShark application.  Now that doesn't work anymore and I can't seem to get the remote to work with anything.
I've tried restarting my iMac, swapping the remote's battery, and using another remote but still no success.  The only response I get is from the remote's 'Menu' button which, when pressed, toggles between two graphics on screen - one a four-way arrow indicator with a centre button, and the other what appears to be a Forward/Back, Centre button with corner indications for Expand/Shrink.
I've tried the 'Pair' option but pressing 'Menu' and 'Fast Forward' does nothing on screen - no sign of the chain-link 'Paired' symbol. Neither of the white remotes I tried is 'Paired' with the iMac.
It seems I must have done something to cause this but can't think of any change I made that could be responsible.  I know Front Row is no longer accessible in Lion, but is there any other app I could test my remote on?  Any kind of hardware reset needed? (unlikely, I know, with two separate remotes showing the problem).
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I'm replying to my own question because my remotes are working again.
I'm not sure what I did to fix the issue, but I tried shutting down all open applications (I remembered that by default Lion re-opens with everything as it was).  And shortly afterwards I got full functionality back for my Apple Remote.
I'm not sure what caused the issue.  I did install Easy Timeline, which I'd downloaded today from the Mac App Store.  It has Apple Remote functionality, so I'm not sure if it was in some way implicated.  It's working now with my remote, as is iTunes, and RadioShark.
    Weird!

I just hooked up my 30GB iPod 3G to the Universal Doc and tried the my new Apple remote. The only buttons on the remote that work in controlling my iPod while on the dock are the play/pause and the skip forward and back buttons.

    btabz,
Thanks for your response. No the iPod doesn't respond at all--the volume display doesn't come up or change.
When I press the play/pause or either skip forward or back on the remote, the iPod, while on the dock, lights up and responds to the command as it should. But when I press volume up or down on the remote the iPod does not respond at all.
According to Apple's store info on the remote, the volume up/down controls should work. I am wondering if maybe it doesn't work with the 3Gs for some reason. But if that is the case, Apple should indicate that. It is kind of frustrating to not be able to adjust the volume.
    Thanks,

  • Apple TV no longer responds to Apple remote(s).

My Apple TV suddenly stopped responding to the remote. I tested this with 3 different Apple remotes I have, and none of them work. Pressing any button on the remote turns the Apple TV status light to yellow, but that's all I can get it to do.
I confirmed that the Apple TV isn't frozen (as I initially thought) since my Remote app on my iPhone works just fine, controlling everything on the Apple TV per usual.
I restarted the Apple TV three times, so that's not helping.
Anyone have any thoughts? I've browsed the forums and can't seem to find any remote issues.

Sounds like your tv has become paired with another remote.
