Apple RGB VS Color LCD

Hi all,
Just curious what is the differences between these 2 profiles? All i can see is some color tone differences.
BTW, what is the purpose of having diff color profiles?
Thanks.

Those tone differences are the exact differences that make those two different profiles. Profiles are color corrections in a sense, they make sure that the color you capture with your camera is what you see on screen and is what you see on your printer and in your scanner. They calibrate all your equipment so that consistent colors are obtained.
The generally accepted "standard" in the world of photography is usually the Adobe RGB (1998) profile. Unless you are very serious about photography / graphic arts, I wouldn't really bother playing around with these settings. A lot of them only change subtle things (such as the particular shade of green) and in the end won't make THAT big a difference to a non-pro.

  • Apple rgb vs. adobe rgb, fcp and photoshop

    fcp 5.0.4

in the past when i've edited jpegs in fcp (jpegs came from photoshop with color working space of sRGB), they export to QT washed-out. I think i've found a solution (afer much googling) so i wanted to ask if this sounds right to you.
in photoshop i hit 'convert to profile' and choose 'apple rgb', with Engine: 'Apple ColorSync'. when i take these jpegs into fcp, then export them to qt, they look much better, not washed out. i just wanted to check this with you b/f i go ahead and convert many many photos.
    thanks!!

i've done many of these sequences in the past, using jpegs, and quality looks fine to me (for web).
if you use tiffs, does that allow for better-looking dissolves for web delivery? i know it 'should', since tiffs are higher quality than jpegs, but want to know if you've compared this factor side to side online. thanks.
do you know about the rgb question?

Can i return my I phone 5 to apple because the color at the edges are gone already after 2 month?

You only have 30 days to return an iPhone for full refund.  However, you are under warranty, so if you think this is a defect or such, take it into an Apple Store and show them and ask them about it.  If the screen is faulty, they will replace it.

  • Text reflow when converting from rgb spot color to process black

The setup that I'm using is a G5 Mac OSX, version 10.4.11. The InDesign application is CS3, version 5.0.3. The fonts are loaded into Extensis Font Reserve, server 1.7.4. The InDesign document has a text box using 2 different font sets. One set, Helvetica Neue, uses the rgb spot color. The other one, a mixed set of New Century Schoolbook, is used for a paragraph which is process black. When deleting the rgb spot color from the swatches and converting it to process black, the New Century Schoolbook reflows which had already been process black.
If I just select the Helvetica Neue type and change that line to process black there is no reflow problem.
When I tried this document on another Mac with the same set up there was no reflow. Is this an InDesign preference problem? Thanks

If you change the color back and then back again, do you get more reflows?
The reason I ask is that when InDesign opens a document, it holds the existing composition of stories until you apply any edit. So, it could be that what you're seeing here is that yours and your user's setups are different enough that reflow is inevitable the moment you edit the text, and changing the color counts as editing.

  • Copying a CMYK Indesign CS3 photo element into a Photoshop CS3 RGB document - color retention?

Copying a CMYK Indesign CS3 photo element (photo silo) into a Photoshop CS3 RGB document - color retbtion issues in a Smart Object?

What a bad idea pasting an image into Indesign instead of placing it is.
I would recommend writing an X4 pdf without downsampling and compression and opening that pdf in Photoshop (but set to »Images« instead of »Pages«).
And if the image is unprofiled Edit > Assign Profile with the indd’s profile before converting it to RGB.

  • Does the Model No. A1059 have a Color LCD

I have a 20GB iPod with a busted screen. Model No. A1059. Judging by the color splotches on the screen it looks like it might be a color LCD but I am not sure but I have found mixed reports online. Anyone know?

My iPod's Model No. is A1040 and it has a black & white screen. I doubt the one you had came with a color screen. The black and white screen has multiple colors of liquid inside in order to create the black.

According to the local Apple Store here, the Color iPod dock (M9868G/A) will work with the 5G iPod but is a "loose fit" as far as the seating in the well goes.

  • MacBook Pro's Color LCD "shifts" when connected to external display?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with the hi-res anti-glare screen. I just noticed that the internal color LCD "shifts" its colors when I connect it to an external display (a Dell 2408 WFP). If I disconnect the external display, the colors internal color LCD go back to "normal".
I have two images to show what I mean:
This is what it looks like with the external display disconnected i.e. the MacBook Pro on its own: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4558641163/sizes/l/>
This is what it looks like with the external display connected: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4559271260/sizes/l/>
The wallpaper is from pixelgirlpresents.com. I didn't notice this problem before with my older 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7).
My guess is that with the external display connected, somehow the color LCD decides to use the external display's profile as well (instead of its own).
Any ideas on why this is happening? And, more importantly, any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.

@Stefan: Thanks for the tip. I tried it but unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. The color is still off.
Incidentally, just out of curiosity, I tried these two things:
    1) I tried the "Mirror Displays" option in the Displays Preference Pane. With this option enabled, both displays actually displayed the right colors (right with respect to how each display is calibrated).
    2) I opened the same desktop wallpaper in Preview. Whenever I drag the Preview window so that it spans/crosses both displays (external and Color LCD), there is a light flicker in the wallpaper in the Preview Window. For that brief moment, I can see that the color is right before it changes to the shifted color on the Color LCD.
I found a possibly related thread on a different forum <http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37841>. That doesn't seem to help when both displays are connected.
Now, I am just wondering if this is considered normal - wonky color shifts between the desktop/different windows happen when you have two displays connected....

PS: Note that I am not a graphics designer so my definition of right/wrong is just based on my experience looking at the wallpaper and remembering what it should look like on each display by itself.

  • *Please* Apple, fix Safari color-management

    Hey,
I was very happy with the SL update and following 10.6.2 regarding color management under OS X.
The problem is that Safari's own color management is broken. It reverts any untagged content to Monitor RGB. This is a huge problem on wide gamut monitors as they'll render over saturated colors (almost neon-like).
Apple should follow Mozilla's steps and see what they did with Firefox 3.6. It manages all colored content (whether it's images or CSS colors) and reverts everything to the ICC monitor profile you set on your preferences.
I cannot rely on Safari (or Chrome for that matter) anymore.
I know this issue is well-known and was reported before, but Apple has to fix this.

    HI,
Best to put a bug in Apple's ear...
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Report Bugs to Apple.
They will not respond but developers do read the reports.

  • Apple TV support color profiles in photos?

I've come across a problem with color in my photos. I use Aperture as my photo editor, and most photos have been taken in the RAW format. When iTunes shares photos to the Apple TV 2, it uses the previews generated by Aperture. These previews are JPGs with an embedded color profile of Adobe RGB (1998). You have no control over this. Aperture always uses this color profile for RAW photos.
Now let's say I export a photo from Aperture into JPG format, using the sRGB profile. I can open this photo in Preview, and open the Aperture-generated preview version in Preview, and they look identical. I can also import the JPG back into Aperture, and again it looks identical to the RAW version when viewed by Aperture. This is to be expected because Aperture and Preview are color-managed apps. However, the sRGB version, when viewed on the Apple TV 2, is way more saturated then the Adobe RGB version. Does this mean that the combination of iTunes and Apple TV isn't color-managed? Does it, for instance, assume that all photos are sRGB? This is a major problem, because if I have a mixture of RAW and JPG photos the colors will not be consistent between them when shown via the Apple TV.
    Any thoughts welcome!

    Stephen Dawson1 wrote:
Well, as far as I'm aware, Apple TV 2 "streams" photos via iTunes. Aperture has a preference to "Share previews with iLife and iWork". It is these previews that are picked up by iTunes and by the media browser in Finder (via an XML file produced by Aperture, and also by iPhoto). The photo browser icon in a new email compose window will also use these. So no, Apple TV doesn't support RAW directly - it doesn't have to, because the photos shared from Aperture or iPhoto are always JPGs. But the previews produced by Aperture (and iPhoto - I just tested that) from a RAW file have the Adobe RGB profile, and it doesn't look like the workflow handles that properly at all when it comes to Apple TV or even emailing photos from outside Aperture/iPhoto (it's not a good idea to be emailing JPGs that have an Adobe RGB profile). Sorry, I'm starting to sound like a broken record!
You mentioned Winston. Where does he hang out?
Thanks again for your continued interest...
Winston hangs about all over the place, especially here.
In all honesty I think this goes beyond any configuration issue you have control over as a user and I would advise you to send feedback to AppleTV and Aperture teams:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
I'm not sure if you're shooting RAW and JPG or just RAW but if both I think I'd be inclined to set iTunes Advanced preferences to share a Smart Album of JPGs only (assuming that's possible).

  • Using apple TV with an LCD monitor

I've hooked up an Apple TV to a Dell LCD monitor that has an aspect ratio of 16:10 using an HDMI to DVI connector.
It seems to me that there is no really solid reason for the Apple TV to not allow support for 16:10 aspect ratio. Watching an espisode of Lost on the LCD is particularly bad, since it is pillarboxed to begin with, and the 16:9 signal that is sent then is further horizontally squished instead of using the available space.
It would be nice to have this display show the signal letterboxed, but there is nothing you can do with a digital display with a digital signal, you are locked out from any manipulation via the control panel on the monitor and everything is left for the source to decide. If the source doesn't support much configuration (in the case of the Apple TV any configuration), then you're locked into watching an inferior image.
Is there any way that I am missing to get proper aspect ratio displayed when plugged into a 16:10 aspect ratio monitor?

Apple TV isn't a monitor. Nor is it a deck. It is another computer. So no, you cannot route a signal thru it.
You are living in cloud cookoo land.
