  • Apple FairPlay DRM protected, paid for, iBooks readable on OS X?

I was amazed to learn just how many folks are furious about this limitation that Apple's FairPlay DRM encryption of iBooks purchased on iTunes with a MacBook, are only readable on an iOS device.
My Google search on reading paid for Mac iBooks revealed that there are many threads on this subject on many web pages
The only solution I have found so far is to buy books on Amazon. is there some solution other than that?
Interesting that Apple's Feedback choices do not even show iBooks as a possible feedback option.

I do not buy a book and be limited to read it on my ipod only. I want to read only some parts of it there, and the rest on my 15 inch laptop or my 20 inch secondary monitor..  perfectly understandable by every ebook user, but not by Apple ?
I completely understand the desire to not be limited to the device you can read eBooks on, and most eBook readers I know will also agree. However, the majority of those same readers will also say they do not care to read eBooks on their computers, which is, most likely, why Apple presently only allows reading of eBooks purchased throught the iTunes store on iDevices. Additionally, most of the heavy readers I know don't use iDevices, they use e-ink devices to read. The people, like yourself, who want to read eBooks on their computers are actually a rather small minority of readers.

  • Apple selling DRM audio songs when purchasing some albums

Hi...I am at a loss as to why this is happening too. I have raised the case with iTunes support as I have only noticed it over the last few days. (I am running iTunes 11 and iOS 6.02 on my iPhones/iPads.
I have tested it on different Apple ID'S. Any album that I buy from the iTunes store that has some tracks listed as album only do play in iTunes. However those particular tracks that were shown as "album only" and can only be purchased when you buy the whole album which I did and these particular ones are MP4 OR MPEG protected.
Here are the 3 albums I tested -
Rod Stewart Merry Xmas Baby (Delux)
Track that is album only and DRM is Have yourself a very merry Christmas.
The very best of Neil Diamond - several tracks including I am I said which is DRM
A Symphony of British Music (Olympic Ceremony)
Track - The Spice Girls Wannabe and several others too that show as album only are also DRM.
Not sure if many other people are having this issue but wish it would get sorted as while it doesn't affect playing them in iTunes it does affect my Sonos system as you can't listen to DRM tracks on Sonos.
Anyone else having these problems are have an answer?
If you google this there are other people experiencing this problem when purchasing albums that have tracks listed as album only in it.
    Many Thanks Rob
Here is a screenshot of one album only tracks from the Rod Stewart Album...

You need to have subscribed to iTunes Match to do that. Click here and see the third answer for more information.

  • Re: Apple puts DRM blocks on there current generation of Video iPods

Ok so Apple seems to be placing a limit on the playback of music videos with the "TV On" feature of the current crop of iPods with iTunes 7.0.2.
Try this for yourself you can play all the music videos and playlists you want with the "TV Off" feature but when you try to play it out to a TV it will only basically play purchased videos or one video out at a time.
What's next a "TV On" block on movies or Tv Shows? This is WEAK and now I have to find a way to go and buy a used Video iPod in the 60gb format with older iTunes.
My old 60gb video iPod had no problem other that it got stolen.

    Try it yourself,
I gave the outline of how to create the potential issue and you will see what I'm talking about. I'm a longtime owner and believer of the iPod and iTunes platform.
Try shuffling music videos with some not bought from the iTunes store .. it will only play 24 tops now and it always plays the same one with a preference to iTunes bought purchases.
Or try playing a whole artist list of videos with "TV On" it will only play one at a time. If you leave "TV Off" it will play the whole artist list without a hitch.

  • Apple doesn't seem DRM-free to me

For many years I used to buy music from a robust Moscow site (mp3sparks), where songs were way cheaper than iTunes.  I wasn't drawn by cost savings but because the music was DRM-free.  I wasn't thrilled with doing this given U.S. trade representative's complaints on behalf of the U.S. music industry. Then I heard things you buy on iTunes today are DRM free.  Safe and legal, supporting my beloved Apple and being fair to artists, I was all for it, and I changed my evil ways.  Now, two songs from one album I bought from iTunes last week (March 2013, well into DRM-free iTunes) I'm having trouble playing from a Mac in a different room, and it makes me wonder if I was misled by all the PR about Apple being DRM free.  Why is it asking me to authorize to another computer if it is DRM free?  And I'm stuck in the won't-authorize loop (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1389) where after a Get-Info track check on which account purchased it, I log in correctly but it says "this computer is already authorized" and yet still won't play them.
So thinking it must be a technical error, I'll see if I can't re-download them from iTunes direct onto this second computer but from my Apple ID.  I get an alert popping up, "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID.  If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you cannot auto-download past purchases with a different Apple ID for 90 days."
Really?  This is Apple's idea of ending DRM protection?  Oh Moscow, I think I faintly hear your siren song.  OK, so a serious question here… looking for a philosophical answer, not a technical one.  A household with two users with different laptop iTunes purchasers, but one server computer powering the hi-fi and network-served library. What's Apple rationale in maintaining all this authorization stuff, what that's that 90-day popup alert trying to protect Apple from in a DRM-free world?
(As I'm writing this, in came a message as long as this one from Katie, Senior iTunes Store Customer Support, and I'll try her solutions for the technical side.  I gotta give Katie and Apple kudos for fast response.)

    Update
I'm still not thrilled with the proprietary hooks, but I did get more helpful insight from iTunes support.  I will never know why two cuts on an album wouldn't behave properly for a 2-user-family situation with several computers and two Apple IDs, but it may have been the universe reacting to my wife's unpleasant music tastes ("The Music of SMASH").  Nevertheless I have left the situation with a slightly better understanding of my situation from helpful Katie in Apple support, this business with the 90-day lockout.
Bottom line:  think of it as two different things, authorization versus association.  Or more specifically, iTunes song authorization versus computer association with your Apple ID.
Key concept:  Association is required to use certain iCloud features such as automatic downloads, re-downloading songs, and iTunes Match.  I was deep into iTunes Match when I first recognized the no-play problem and got stuck inside a reauthorization loop.  And part of my solution to straightening out my SMASH cuts <wince> was re-downloading, apparently thrusting me hip deep into the Association policy.
I admit I don't completely grasp practical application of all implications of this, but here's a restatement of the 90-day lockout policy as it was explained to me:  Each device or computer can only be associated to one Apple ID at a time, and association can be changed once without causing any problems. HOWEVER, once association is initially switched you will be unable to change the device association for 90 days. The device can be removed from your associated device list, but the 90 day restriction remains (there may be extenuating circumstances warranting an exception).
You can get more info on your situation from your iTunes..
        1.    Store > Sign In from the iTunes menu.
        2.    Choose Store > View My (AppleID) Account
        3.    From the Account Information screen, click the Manage Devices line
Next to each device or computer name, you will be able to see when each was associated to your Apple ID. You will also be able to track how many days are remaining before your associated devices.  More info: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4627
Hope that helps the next guy trying to re-download a malfunctioning iTune and exasperated with this 90-day lockout threat.

  • How do I transfer iTunes purchases to another apple ID (Account)

My daughter has been purchasing iTunes content using my Apple ID (account) for many years. I now have 5 macs for myself and she has a new laptop. This puts us over the 5 authorized computer limit. I have set up a new, separate apple ID (Account) for her to purchase new music. I would like to transfer the music that she has purchased under my account to her new account so I can de-authorize her computer from my account.
Is there a way to transfer the Apple ID (Ownership) of the iTunes content to another Apple ID (Account)

    Dave,
maybe my English isn't good enough, but I just scanned the iTunes legal agreement, and this is what I found:
(ii) You shall be authorized to use iTunes Products on five iTunes-authorized devices at any time, except for Content Rentals (see below).
(iii) You shall be able to store iTunes Products from up to five different Accounts at a time on compatible devices, provided that each iPhone may sync ringtone iTunes Products with only a single iTunes-authorized device at a time, and syncing an iPhone with a different iTunes-authorized device will cause ringtone iTunes Products stored on that iPhone to be erased.
(iv) You shall be authorized to burn an audio playlist up to seven times.
    (v) You shall not be entitled to burn video iTunes Products or ringtone iTunes Products.
(vi) iTunes Plus Products do not contain security technology that limits your usage of such products, and Usage Rules (ii) – (v) do not apply to iTunes Plus Products. You may copy, store, and burn iTunes Plus Products as reasonably necessary for personal, noncommercial use.
From my understanding this tells me that there are limitations to iTunes products, i. e. songs that you purchased, if they are not iTunes Plus songs. But as I said, I am not 100% certain, this Legalese stuff is really kinda hard to understand. But I still think that if you bought a DRM protected song on iTunes (meaning a non-Plus title), removing the protection is illegal!
And, sorry to say that, Dave, but in my opinion you are wrong by saying "when Apple dropped DRM from...". They did not do that. They introduced iTunes Plus, which is not DRM protected, but the old, non-Plus stuff, still is DRM protected, imo...

  • Remove DRM from Independent Labels

One way that Apple can show that it takes seriously the topics brought up in Steve Jobs's article, "Thoughts on Music", is to remove DRM from all material where the content producer did not specifically ask for it.
There are many independent labels who wish their music to be as open as possible to a broader community. DRM gets between them and their customers.
Please consider removing DRM from all content where the content producer did not request or require it.
    Thank you,
    Mike Shea

It wont happen. Apple has DRM accross the board is to offer a consistant product. Lets face the facts that if 90% of all music is required DRM (shot in the dark) people who dont get the DRM thng (most customers) will be totaly lost if only a few songs have DRM and others dont. Apple stripping DRM from music that doesnt require them means very little to the Recording companies anyway.

  • HT1711 Why do I have to pay extra for something that I already bought? Shouldn't I be able to have access to my music even if its not through apple? This is ridiculous when I go to the store and buy a CD I'm not relegated to only playing it on one CD play

Why do I have to pay extra for something that I already bought? Shouldn't I be able to have access to my music even if its not through apple? This is ridiculous when I go to the store and buy a CD I'm not relegated to only playing it on one CD player

iTunes Plus is the name for the option in iTunes that allows customers to buy music at the iTunes Store that is free from digital rights management, or DRM.
Digital Rights Management, or DRM, is designed to prevent unauthorized sharing of files. This especially became a big concern for the music industry after the rise of Napster, Limewire, and Kazaa.
DRM, even the DRM used by Apple on iTunes Store content, prevented that. Apple's DRM allowed users to share files on only up to 5 computers.
According to TUAW, the new iTunes Plus songs have information embedded in them that identifies the user who bought and shared them by name.
This means that if you share your music and record companies want to track you down and sue for you copyright infringement, it's going to be easy.
This may help you understand why you would need iTunes Plus - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1711.
It may be that Android required that type of file to be able to let it sync.  See here - http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html.

  • Don't sync down Apple Music tracks please!

I think I've found the cause of many of my "it doesn't play on iOS, but does on my Mac" problems. I'd played with Apple Music a week ago. In doing that, a few of my local tracks end up with Apple Music DRM versions (I still have my old non-DRMed tracks too). When Spotify syncs a "local" track, it can pick either the DRMed version, or the non-DRMed version. You'll only find out it pulled the wrong one when playback grinds to a halt on iOS.  After removing the Apple Music tracks from the iTunes database, (they're listed under Apple Music), I was able to resync my playlist and the songs which previously wedged up started to play. Is there a place to file a bug with Spotify? Seems like it really shouldn't be sourcing "local" files that are Apple Music DRMed.

I still have not found a solution for this.  The only way to make my custom playlists accesible via Apple TV is to make sure that one of my OSX devices (iMac, MacBook) is active on the same network. The OSX device must be turned on and iTunes must be open. The AppleTV will then see the device and you can make use of the playlists.
It's a bit of a hassle though. The playlists should be accessible directly from AppleTV without needing additional devices online.

  • Will Apple force me to use their platform forever?

I just bought Mac computer and iPhone, and im thinking about buying my first music tracks, books, tv shows in iTunes. But i have doubts about it. Im worried if i will invest couple hundreds pounds in my collection, i will be tied with iTunes and Apple products forever? I know that Apple removed DRM from iTunes music tracks, but what about other content types? So my question is basicly about if copying my collection to another platform, if i will ever stop using Apple platform is possible and legal? And if it is, what proof of that i will have, if i will cancel my Apple ID, and after couple years, police search will find some music on my computer and nice policeman will ask about proof that i bought this music ?

All the formats except DRM protected are  platform independent as long as something is available to play them on that platform.  So, you can play Apple's AAC on many devices as long as they can read mp4 coding (which many, many things can).
For DRM protected items you will find that you are pretty much restricted to platform software availablility to play that, regardless of the platform.  So, for example, your can play iTunes movies on both Macs and PCs because the software isavailable for both platforms.  If the love of your liife is a computer running Linux then don't buy Apple DRM protected movies, but good luck finding any that play because just about all commerical movies these days have DRM protection of some sort or another.
As roaminggnome points out, the same restrictions apply to DVDs except there just about anything plays DVDs these days.  They still have the DRM protection though.  I suspect what is more likely to happen will be at some stage we will see happen to your DVDs what happened to videos when DVDs came out.  Nothing plays VHS anymore, and it is hard to find players.  You'll have to go out and buy all your DVDs again in whatever new format replaces DVDs in the next decade or so (it wouldn't surprise me if movies were sold on thumb drives soon and optical drives disappeared completely).

  • Can i change my iPad 3 for new iPad retina in the apple store?

Can i change my iPad 3 to new iPad retina in the apple store by paying few money?

I have a similar issue...my uncle asked what I wanted as a present and I said a new ipad came out with support for Australian 4G networks and to get that...it's the 'new' ipad. Of course he went into the store and asked for the latest 'new' ipad on 28/10 and they sold him an ipad3 which retailed for the same price as an ipad4.
So when I got it I was advised by the telco that my version was not compatible. I called applecare to ask them if I could swap it being 1 week out from purchase and of course they said go back to the store it was purchased from. No surprises the store doesn't want anything to do with it, they just want to get rid of their old stock.
Now I am stuck with an ipad which I did not want (I specifically did not want the ipad3 because it did not support our local networks' 4G) and Apple have washed their hands of it.
This is terrible policy...at first I was upset Apple or the reseller won't exchange it but really I don't blame the reseller now...my grief is in the stupid Apple naming policy..."oh it's the new ipad with retina display now" .... hang on a second the ipad3 was also the 'new' ipad with retina display (maybe not by name) and was never referred to as the ipad 3rd gen...now they're saying oh it's now the ipad3 you want the ipad with retina display...guess what your stupid naming convention means half the noobs out there don't know what they're buying.
The identical naming convention has caused my uncle to purchase an obsolete product for top dollar...I have an iphone 3g, 4, 4s, touch, etc. well I think it's safe to say android is the future. I'm already finding streaming media is made impossible by Apple's DRM and policies...something my $100 andoid tablet can do easy.

  • DRM on iTunes and android phone.

Every single song I ever purchased with DRM on iTunes is NOT playable on my android phone. Someone please help?

That is to be expected. Files protected with Apple's DRM scheme can only be played on Apple devices/software. You need to upgrade the songs to iTunes Plus format when offered the relevant links in the store, or subscribe to iTunes Match which should upgrade all your DRM tracks, or burn everything to CD and re-rip.

  • HT3819 video stream from amazon prime to my TV

i want to video stream from amazon prime to my TV  via my ipad, mac book using my apple TV device..

there is no reason to get rid of Apple devices, not when a Chromecast, Roku, or FireTV can be acquired so cheaply.
This is a true statement, but this is a bad option in the long term since your content will be split between different sources, DRM rules, apps, access options, etc.  You are going to constantly be running into issues were you want to watch a show that is not available on the device (phone, tablet, etc) you are on.  I share "Disgusted_with_apple" frustrations in that Apple has not updated in three years now leaving Amazon FireTV and others with better interfaces and features but having my content locked into Apple's DRM.
Apple was really first to market with a viable TV interface device, and has completely turned the market over to its competitors just by not showing up.  And now ATV can not play content, or provide features that ALL of the competitors have.   I recently bought an Amazon FireTV and love it.  The only advantage Apple has left is the iTunes Store still has more content, but that is not likely to last.

  • Can someone help me with an ongoing issue? My devices are accessed repeatedly by another party, someone manipulating my local ISP, I can't access iTunes, I keep finding websites visited on my devices. It seems as if someone accesses remotely.

I don't know what all this means but I know it shouldn't have happened.

.local indicates local activity by the computer host Williams-macbook-pro.local=hostname@domain . The UID of 501 is the standard UID of a local computer administrator.
Copy and paste this little script in your terminal:
    if [ "SSH_CONNECTION ]; then
         echo I am remote
    else
         echo I am local
    fi
A return of "i am local" ensures there is no remote connection to your machine (through SSH).
In the future, to avoid remote entry, I would recommend not posting your IP address though.
