Apple's H.264 vs Generic H.264

I have been experiencing better playback (in term of CPU usage) with H.264 videos from Apple (keynote presentation) and some other website eg, "Experiment of The Weeks" from Miro app. They usually end with .m4v (iTunes friendly)
For the same image size of videos (.mov) I make using VisualHub and HandBrake, are much more CPU intensive. it's impossible to playback a 640x480 H264 video at 30fps, My Q is does it matter what file extension the vids end with? How do Apple make their H264 video?
Thanks

What settings are you using to create your content with VH and HB? I believe that, in order to provide a product that works for most users, they tend to err on the side of larger file sizes in order to get quality, but this may mean more work per frame as well (more CPU intensive).
All things being equal, a H.264 video at a given bitrate should be no more CPU intensive whether it's in a .mov container or an .m4v or .mp4.

Maybe because iPad2 has a faster processor

  • Apple device h.264 codecs failed

For the last two days I've been using the Apple Device h.264 codec to compress 1-3 minute clips to prepare for apps. Everything worked smoothly. Now all of the sudden none of those three listed codecs work. Other codecs in Compressor do, but not the ones under the Apple Device category. I've been exporting out of FCP, so instead I tried to import into a QT movie into Compressor and try it that way, but that didn't work. I tried to repair Compressor with this:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/compressorrepair/
That didn't work. I tried to repair permissions on my computer through my Disk Utility, and that didn't work. Do you know what else I can do?
    Thanks,
    miss2z
P.S. I'm posting this now, but I have to leave the computer for a time. My reply could be slow at first.

If you can export H264 files out of FC or by opening a file in QT and then exporting a H264 then the system does have the codec and Compressor has the issue.
I would try uninstalling all of FCS since you have already re-installed Compressor and Qmaster.
I presume you uninstalled with Digital Rebellion's uninstaller software as opposed to just reinstalling from the discs or dragging the app to the trash and reinstalling? I would not recommend the later two.
When I uninstalled with DR's uninstaller and reinstalled I still had to insert every disc and it took quite a bit of time. I would consider uninstalling everything and then reinstall.
Digital Rebellion also has a preference manager for FCS and this will save any preferences you desire in FCS. I would use this before the uninstall and not save anything related to Compressor.
Absolute worst case scenario: Clean install
This means you take your system disc and erase the hard drive and start over from scratch. Cloning your system drive and time machine can help avoid some of this but some people feel that time machine isn't the best option for backing up things like FCS. It is a huge hassle and very time consuming but every time I have done a clean install and reinstalled everything it has ALWAYS worked.

  • Apple's H.264 Trickery

Does anyone know what encoder (software of hardware) was used to create the clips for Apple's HD Gallery?
I can't for the life of me figure out how they managed to create such high-quality content at such low bit rates...
I've tried encoding some SD (640x480) material with H.264 in QuickTime 7, Compressor 2, and Sorenson Squeeze 4.1 (all approximately at the same bit rate, as was used for Apple's HD clips) using the highest quality settings, and the results were terrible, to put it mildly.
    Any idea what was used?
Check out this http://www.apple.com/quicktime/hdgallery/magnificentdesolation.html Try the 480p version, despite the legend, it's actually 640x480 running at around 2 Mbit/s. HOW DID THEY DO THAT?

Does your footage run at 24 frames per second, and if so, are you encoding from a pristine source that doesn't have a 4:1:1 or 4:2:0 colorspace? Is your footage interlaced?
29.97 fps, uncompressed 8-bit, 4:2:2, progressive. Is that not good?
By the looks of it, the video was encoded at 2.5 Mbit/s.
True, but the WildlifeHD video was encoded at <2 Mbit/s, runs at 30 fps (although originally it was shot at 24 fps), and its dimensions are greater.
I tried encoding mine at as high as 5 Mbit/s and the quality is still bad.
I'm not saying that I'm doing everything right; I just can't believe Apple used its own H.264 (or any software-based encoder at all).

  • How to use the settings of Apple's h.264 Codec in ffmpeg.

    Hi there!
Is it possible to use the same settings of the Apple h.264 codec in ffmpeg?
I already found a *.setting file with some info, but this can't be all....
Does someone know the settings of the Apple h.264 codec that are used by default (e.g.: me, subme, psy, mixed_ref, bframes, b_pyramid)? Or maybe there's a tool to analyze a movie encoded with the Apple h.264 codec very precisely (I already tried h264_parse.exe, but I couldn't figure out that much)

    My questions are:
    1) How do I access the values generated by APEX (in bold) so that I can use them in further calculations? e.g. create a grand total from both regions
    2) Having calculated a value, assuming 1 above is possible, how do I insert it at position x or y? e.g I want to calculate a % so that x would be 8.33% and y 20%
There are a couple of options for doing this, but neither of them are particularly simple for the inexperienced.
    1. Use dynamic actions and JavaScript to extract the values from the report total rows, calculate the values, and insert the results into the required report cell.
    2. Combine both reports into one, with all of the calculations performed in the query, and use a custom report template to display the results in the required format. This would involve a similar approach to that used in this previous thread: https://forums.oracle.com/message/10109743#10109743
    3) How do I change the words report total: to something more helpful?
Use the Display this text when printing report sums property in the Break Formatting section of the report attributes.

  • Apple Branded Firewire vs. Generic Firewire

If I'm using a generic firewire cable to import video, should I expect the video quality to be noticeably lower than if I imported video using an Apple branded firewire cable? I think Apple is charging around $25-30 for a firewire cable and I picked up a generic one for about $7.
However, I noticed that the video that I watch in iMovie is not nearly as good as when I connect my 3CCD camcorder directly to the TV and watch there. Is it just that iMovie doesn't display my imported video at the best quality OR that I'm paying for using a generic firewire cable???
    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Hello Terrabay,
Although you have a definitive answer from mishmumken on the need to have a studio monitor for final review of any digital production as well as Matthew Morgan's correct response that the signal (packet)portion of the FW data is either going to work 100% or not at all, I'd like to add my two cents on generic vs quality FW cable.
Brief explaination: FW is sent in "packets" with a timing signal. If you have an inferior cable (read that cheap w/out decent shielding), you may lose that timeing signal, and the FW circuit on the other end of the cable can't properly sort out the packet information w/out the timing signal. The result will be no connection at all. That's why FW cable specific on cable length: the "packets" need to be timed from one end of the cable to the other, and w/out going into detail, the lenght is determined by the frequency of the "packets".
IMHO, inferior FW cable will cause the majority of problems in loss of connection. Sometimes just a bend or coil of the cable is enough to warp open the shield-wrap and interrupt the signal timing. On some quality FW cable, there may be up to four(quad) wrap to insure that that doesn't happen.
So, my suggestion is that you choose quality cable. And price does not always mean that you will get what you pay for.

  • All headphones give distorted, crackly sound. Sometimes no sound. Headphone jack broken? Apple expresslane support giving a "generic error" message whenever I try to send in for service...

As in the title. For a while the headphone jack is occasionally crackly when the jack moves around in the port. It finally died today when I plugged it in and all the audio is heavily distorted and sometimes cuts out completely. Whenever I try to set up a service with Apple I keep getting this error message:
We're sorry, but we are unable to complete your request at this time.
Please try again in a few minutes or start over now.
I can't get through to the Irish support phone number either, it keeps saying number not recognised. Is there any other way I can send my iphone in for service (closest genius bar is 500km away...)

Unknown/random errors, timeouts and all sorts of weirdities.
As described above, transmission errors can cause wide variety of symptoms ranging from device ICRC error to random device lockup, and, for many cases, there is no way to tell if an error condition is due to transmission error or not; therefore, it's necessary to employ some kind of heuristic when dealing with errors and timeouts. For example, encountering repetitive ABRT errors for known supported command is likely to indicate ATA bus error.
Once it's determined that ATA bus errors have possibly occurred, lowering ATA bus transmission speed is one of actions which may alleviate the problem.
I'd also add; make sure you have good backups when ATA errors are frequent

  • Apple Specific RAM vs. Generic RAM

    Aloha MBP Friends,
I was just trying to decide if I should buy Crucial memory or Crucial memory that is specifically marketed toward Apple machines.
All the specifications look identical as far as I can tell, but is there possible some little thing that Apple RAM needs that normal RAM doesn't have?

  • Lame h.264 bug, let us have Apple's version!

How does Apple use H.264 to get those good-looking movie trailers? Every time I use it, the colors are awful, washed-out and not true to the original. Color fidelity is important, why haven't they fixed this glaring problem, even after they've now hidden away compressors like Sorenson3, that actually do a good job?
I tried everything on this list

nothing worked, all those crazy solutions did nothing much. please help
    Thanks

Hate to tell you, but it has nothing to do with serial number range, I had a 19, and I sent it in, and got a 24, and the 24 is worse than the 19.

  • How to make compressor give me 1280x720   h.264 from my 1440 x 1080 sequenc

can someone please tell me how to make compressor give me 1280x720 h.264 from my 1440 x 1080 sequence, with compressor I load up my high defition h.264 but i cant see where i can chage the size, I can tab on the preset and change max bit rates and other stuff but not to make it 1280 x 720,
    Thanks for the help,
    Daz

    In Compressor 3's Settings window:
Apple > Apple Devices > H.264 for Apple TV
this is one of the presets that is supplied as standard and it is pre-configured for H.264 1280x720 output
if you're building your preset from scratch then you can set the output frame size in the Dimensions area of the Geometry pane

  • Layering and locking a h.264 movie on top of a flash file

Let me start by apologizing. My Flash skills far outdo my
DreamWeaver abilities, so I'm pretty new at the program.
I have run into a problem that has forced me back to DW and
that is for the video quality I need, I have to use Apple's H.264
codec; however, I cannot embed this in Flash like the flv's that I
was using. So my question is: Can I layer a .mov file on top of a
Flash file in Dreamweaver and lock it's position so that they stay
together? It seems that this is what Hollywood is doing with their
movie trailers on their websites. I would really appreciate any
    feedback on this.

The standard solution is to set wmode="transparent" and <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> in your embed/object html, but that only helps to fix the problem in win/IE. The problem has been there on Adobe's own home page for years. If you're unlucky enough to use a Mac there's no effective solution for this problem.

  • H.264

If apple support H.264 and MPEG-4 part 10 wherein MPEG-4 part 10 is also known as MPEG-4 AVC, then is quicktime capable of playing AVCHD videos?

From what I can tell, no, QuickTime doesn't yet support AVCHD. Though the format uses H.264 as it's video codec, there's a lot of other work that will have to be done to support that new format. I'm sure it's just a matter of time, but as of today, apparently not.

  • H.264 and other compression

apple makes H.264 sound like its loss-less. Is it? is there any compression codec out there thats loss-less besides Animation?

I wanna be able to compress the video files I have, and then be able to uncompress them without losing any info
Can't be done. The best you can do is archive them as ZIP files, but that won't save you much room. If you compress the footage into another format, it tosses information away...revert back to the original form and you are missing a lot of information.
No...can't compress and then decompress with any real savings in space. That isn't how video works.

  • H.264 MADNESS (Gamma ****?) - Pictures Included.

I'm currently exporting a movie from Adobe After Effects (2K DPX Files) to the Blackmagic 10bit encoder with Trillions of colors. I need to encode this to H.264 for Web and HD viewing.
This is a screenshot of the exported file and how it is supposed to look:
However, when I dump that file into compressor and export via the Quicktime 7 H.264 preset I get this as a result:
It almost seems as if there is a gamma shift going on. Weird huh? But it gets better! When I choose to export to the IPod H.264 (VGA) setting i get this as a result:
It looks like it is supposed to look!!! (Just that I can't make it any bigger because the Ipod preset won't allow that!)
I don't get this. Why is one bleached out and the other normal? Have you ever heard of this before? What software is Apple using for their Quicktime HD H.264 trailers so it doesn't happen to them?
I'd be really interested to hear your feedback!

I have done a some testing, and I see color/gamma/saturation shifts on DV as well as Motion JPEG and Animation, when encoding to H.264 using either QuickTime og Compressor. As ikarus79m, I got good results when using the iPod preset. The H.264 encoded clips also change colors when moving from one display to an other with different color profiles (e.g. Cinema Display to MacBook Pro 17-inch). The iPod-encoded clips do not.
It seems like the H.264 presets, or the codec in general, embeds some kind of color profile to the clip. Why is this not the case when using the iPod preset?
    Here are a few examples.
    Motion JPEG A -> H.264 LAN/Intranet
    DV -> H.264 LAN/Intranet
Color profile color difference. Cinema (Cinema Display) vs. Color LCD (MBP 17-inch)

  • Updated document about QuickTime errors with After Effects (re: H.264 and hyperthreading)

I just updated "troubleshooting QuickTime errors with After Effects CS5, CS5.5, and CS6" with information about hyperthreading and Apple's H.264 encoder.
The gist is that Apple's H.264 exporter component for QuickTime fails when the computer has a large number of CPUs.

No, this applies to any QuickTime H.264 export. You can export H.264 in a QuickTime .mov wrapper out of AME, too, and it will have this problem.
The various H.264 encoding presets (for YouTube, Blu-ray, Vimeo, iPad, etc.) don't use the H.264 QuickTime component, so this isn't relevant to them.
This problem is just relevant to choosing Apple's H.264 as the video codec when choosing QuickTime as a format. This applies to all software that uses QuickTime, by the way, not just Adobe software.
