Apple's "Installer.app" hangs before installing new apps or updates

I can't install any software that uses Apple's proprietary Installer.app. The version I have is Version 3 (276). It always hangs as soon as I click the Install button, resulting in the Spinning Beachball of Death. My only recourse is to Force Quit. Repairing permissions hasn't helped. The VISE installer has no such problem. And hours of digging thru Apple support and other online forums have been fruitless.
Why can't I address this problem directly to an Apple support tech??? I'm not getting any customer service at all!

Take a look in the Console to see if any useful error messages are being thrown (Applications / Utilities / Console -- select "All Messages").
Does it get as far as asking for your Administrator password to do the install? If not, then you may have something screwed up in your Administrator privileges. There are quite a few threads here discussing variations on that theme in Leopard. Are you having any other Administrator privilege issues (e.g., making System Preferences changes)?
The installer uses a number of plug-in bundles. Any chance one off those might be missing (or moved) or corrupted?
In addition to repairing permissions, have you tried the other basic maintenance steps of resetting PRAM and also doing a Verify Disk in Disk Utility?

    Before installing new activation-free version of CS2, during uninstall of old Photoshop, should I keep or remove preferences and should I use standard or advanced uninstall?

    Thank you very much for that info.
    Also, I believe I will need to choose the Advanced uninstall option because the Standard uninstall states it will keep activation data.  As I will need to use the new activation number, I think Advanced is the more thorough way to go.
    Thanks again.

    Help me pls I'm very desperate> my BB is just over 1 year old. Woke up to find the screen with APP ERRor 523 reset . I've tried all tricks in previous treads without success. Only thing left is to install new os. Trouble is that the BB is not backed up yet. How can I back it up before removing old os and installing a new os

    Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
    Sorry, but it is highly likely that your data is already lost...so there is nothing to backup now. This simply proves the point that there are two kinds of computing device users...those who have lost data...and those who will. Backups before things go wrong are simply not optional.
    Good luck and let us know!

  • Adobe AIR installation issue - hangs at "Installing..."

    Hello everyone!
    I know questions similar to this have been asked many times before, but I did not manage to find the solution to my problem after a few hours of reading and trying the various 'solutions' around the net and this forum. I apologise if I missed it.
    I cannot seem to install Adobe AIR. I run a freshly downloaded installation executable, but it hangs at "Installing..." and 0% progress for a very, very, very long time, if I let it. This last try has been going for 45 minutes as I write. The only way to get out of the installer is through Task Manager and killing the service, as hitting 'Cancel' just makes the installer attempt to cancel endlessly.
    I tried installing it in safe mode but there it gives an error saying I may not have administrative permissions (which I do have);
    I created a new user account;
    I "run as Administrator" and am using an account with administrative rights;
    I tried it through the command line with putting the file in c:\ and running "AdobeAIRInstaller.exe -silent" without quotes from c:\;
    I have shut off all my antivirus software;
    I tried downloading it with a different browser;
    I tried using the MicrosoftFixit.ProgramInstallUninstall, and took Adobe AIR off the list;
    I tried uninstalling all Adobe products and then reinstalling them, with Adobe AIR last
    ... and some more things, but none of this has helped. Here's what the installation log generates when it hangs:
    [2012-12-25:01:16:36] Runtime Installer begin with version 3.5.0.880 on Windows 7 x86
    [2012-12-25:01:16:36] Commandline is:

    I would much appreciate any help or advice anyone can give me regarding this! This is starting to drive me nuts.
    Thank you.
    ( also, this is my first post, so please forgive if I've done anything wrong or not according to etiquette! )

    Ok, I understand.  So before we continue, we really need to figure out what the exact error is.  Can you, on at least 2 systems, generate the MSI logs we'll need?  Here's a document that explains how to enable logging and where to find the logs once they've been created:
    How to enable Windows logging
    Once you've enabled logging, try installing again.  Grab the newly created msi logs and either post here or email me at [email protected]  I'll examine the logs and see if we can find a common issue between the systems.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Do I have to uninstall old Brother printer before installing new one?

    I have a Brother all-in-one MFC420CN that has seen better days. Just bought a new Brother all-in-one MFC-J615W. Do I have to uninstall the old one before installing the new? If so, how do I do that and how do I make sure I've gotten rid of everything connected wtih the old printer?

    You don't have to uninstall the old printer. It is not going to cause you any trouble, just make the new printer the default one. If you want to uninstall it, go to System Preferences>Print & Scan. Click on the old printer and click the minus sign on the bottom.

  • Wish to uninstall corrupt flash player before installing new flash player

    Hi there,
    My old flash player (FP) is corrupt. As recommended by Adobe, I need to un-install the old FP program before installing a new FP program (flash player 9). But before I can un-install the old FP, I need to disable temporarily the add-on's to my browers, extensions, BHO(browser Helper Object), ActiveX, etc. The objective is to "block" any add on from preventing an un-install or an Install.
    Does anyone out there know where these things are in Mac OSX 10.2.8 and how to disable them?
    Thanks.
    vkl

    Can you SafeBoot the computer and then run the uninstaller, if available,
    for that old of an OS X version? Was not even sure of any support for
    Jaguar, since there really hasn't been much for Panther 10.3.9 for awhile.
    Must be older players, since the latest ones have been too new for those
    older OS X systems, also.
    At this moment, I have no ideas on where the parts may be in hiding; and
    have not used Jaguar for more than three years, having both sold and
    donated the computers I had which best ran Jaguar 10.2.8, (& dual-booted
    OS9.2.2) at the same time. A slower transition than expected, since then,
    to actually doing more with computers & less learning about repairing them.
    Not sure how supportive the Adobe Uninstallers for Flash (and/or Shockwave)
    Players are for those still capable of being used by Jaguar 10.2.8; and like so
    many of the browsers, older versions 'sort of work' while being left behind.
    +I've never had a Flash player become corrupted. What are the symptoms?+
    If you have a backup clone of before this item became corrupted, you could try
    & revert to the earlier full system clone; or if last but not least, Archive & Install.
    +Perhaps someone with a longer-term memory or more experience in 10.2.8+
    +will find your post and add the missing link to get you back up & running...+
    +I had thought to try & email someone else in a different thread about this one+
    +but the link only gives me the topic at hand, and the person has to be in the+
    +thread in order to quote from it; apparently. I sought to email a.brody, who+
    +had replied in a thread you'd asked a question (different topic) before now.+
    There is a short ton of semi-responsive results to a google of the topic inquiry:
    Mac OS X 10.2.8 uninstalling Flash Player:

    http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=MacOS+X+10.2.8+remove+FlashPlayer&aq=&aqi=&oq=&fp=b36c7832dbb01be6
    One path, I've read about but cannot verify since the original link (site was wiped) is invalid now,
    was to follow this suggestion, from the time you downloaded the new Flash Player 9 for 10.2.8:
    "Get Flash Player 9 for Mac OSX1-.1-10.3. After downloading, DON'T open it...yet. Search all your hard drive
    for "Flash Player.plugin". Delete any you find. Search for "flashplayer.xpt". Delete any you find. Empty the
    trash. Quit all browsers, and install the Flash Player you downloaded. Next, search for "Flash Player.plugin".
    Copy it and paste it at Library/Internet Plugins, unless it's already there. Paste it at yourhomefolder/Library
    /Internet Plugins, unless it's already there. Search for "flashplayer.xpt". Copy and paste it at Library/Internet
    Plugins, unless it's already there. Restart computer. Open Disk Utility. Select the hard drive, select "First Aid".
    Repair Disk Permissions. When repaired, quit Disk Utility. Launch Safari or Firefox." - unknown 10.2.8 author.
    Maybe that means something helpful.
    Some of it looks familiar yet distant...
    (It's all this winter - nine months of it!)
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Do I need to uninstall previous version of Firefox before installing new version?

    I am worrried about installing new version (3.6.13 ) since old version (3.0.15) is working o.k. Can you advise?

    When you install a release version of Firefox (current version is 3.6.15), it will by default replace the existing version. There is no need to uninstall the old version first.

  • When I try to delete my current installation of firefox or install new one it always leads me back to the same place, telling me i need to restart computer to install upgrade, but does nothing, how do i get new installation?

    I have windows 7. When i recently installed windows updates I began having script errors for firefox and my weatherchannel programs. I went to control panel, programs and features and tried to delete these 2 programs to install new ones. It seems like the programs didnt compeletly uninstall because they are still listed in my programs but have no file size. I downloaded latest version of firefox but it wont install. It tells me i need to restart computer to install a previous upgrade. I do that and nothing happens. I keep going around in circles.

    If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
    Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • Apple iOS 7 app auto updates and supervised devices

    I'm in the process of deploying a small number of iPads to our internal users, we had a question around automatic app updates in iOS 7. It would be nice if these devices were able to pull app updates down and install them automatically, but there are 2 problems with this for us. The first is that an itunes account was used to aquire a few free apps, these apps were then installed via configurator, but we will not be signing in to this account on the device. Default behavior unless a supervised iPad is plugged into itunes or signed in manually is to leave the apple id field blank, will updates install without an apple id on the device? Also, if a user signs in to there perosnal apple id will automatic updates download for an app downloaded with a different apple id? Second, were removing the app store from the device, but allowing apps to be installed. This should in theory allow updates to be installed automatically on the device, however we are unsure if this is the case. Does the app store need to be enabled for the device to check in? or does automatic updating happen regardless?

    I can now confirm the apple technician was incorrect. Auto updates WILL NOT install on a device that does not have an apple id signed into it. I've done as much testing as I could with and without signing in and none of the multiple devices I have will automatically download updates until I sign in to the account the app was purchased under. Ultimately this is new for apple, and in addition to that this scenario is faced by very few customers managing these devices So i understand getting this information incorrect. This post is more or less a warning to anyone managing supervised ipads where applications are being installed and no apple id associated with the device, dont rely on automatic updates to keep your apps up to date; you will either have to sign into the ipad and turn on automatic updating, or manually install each update via configurator when they are released.

  • Disable Spotlight before installing a large software update?

    Is it a good idea to "disable" both Time Machine and especially Spotlight before downloading any large software update?  And then enable again after the install?
    This question is based on what I have read on various threads.  Would like to know both the "pros" and "cons".
    Thanks

    Not sure where you read that but it is false. There is no need to disable anything before doing any "Updates".
    It is always a good idea to do a Time Machine backup before you do any major updates and Especially when doing UpGrades so you can Roll back to that TM backup if the "UPGRADE" fails or causes problems.

  • Should I delete CS5 M.C. before installing new apps via cloud?

  • MAC OS X Installation Assistant Hangs after install

    I'm a Mac Newbie, I have a MBP Intel Duo with 10.4 Tiger.
    I took the default Leopard install, just doing it on top of my existing Tiger.
    It took what appeared to be forever to verify the CD, but the rest of the install went ok.
    Upon the reboot as part of the install, I got this purple-ish window, with the word WELCOME in different languages. I believe then, maybe 1 / 2 screens later, it asked to verify my name/addr stuff (already filled in from I'm guessing my tiger registration), I went on, and then on the next screen it asks me about a .MAC account (about 4 options w/ radio buttons ... not now/trial/buy one/etc)
    This is where it hung for me. I could not select the radio buttons, I could not close the window as the window-bar's button was not even red. I could select quit from the top taskbar but it did nothing. I'm pretty sure the app running in the window's title was "MAC OS X Installation Assistant".
    It did close it when I did a restart of the MBP.
    All looks ok on the computer & OS, but I am a little concerned that perhaps some subsequent (post-install) steps were skipped by the "installation assistant" not finishing. Also, finder cannot seem to find something called "mac os x Installation Assistant" on he hard drive.
    Any thoughts about how / where to run it?
    Try re-installing 10.5 again (if it will let me)?
    Anyone know what "next" steps it would have done?
    (or are they un-necessary if this is not a brand new install on a new hard drive?)
    I'm not even sure if it "registered" leopard.
    Thanks for any feedback you can provide.
    Regards.
    -William

    We had exactly the same issue at work, was fairly simple to fix, however this solution assumes that you have access to another mac?
    The issue occours due to the lack of the .AppleSetupDone file, which stops the Setup Assistant from being activated on every boot.
    -Boot the machine with the looping setup assistant to target disk mode (Apple+T)
    -Connect together via firewire
    -On the working machine, launch terminal and enter "sudo cp /var/db/netinfo/.AppleSetupDone /Volumes/<mac hd on looping machine>/var/db/netinfo/"
    -Reboot the looping machine
    -The startup assistant will resume again, make sure to match the shortname for the user to what it was previously to recover all files, should you enter something else, you can recover the home folder by launching terminal and entering "sudo chown -R <shortname> /Users/<shortname>"
    Hope this helps

  • Boot Camp Installation - Grey screen before installing Windows

    So I just got a new iMac and I am trying to install BC. I went through all the steps (making a FAT USB drive, buying a copy of windows, partitioning 150GB for windows).  Then I clicked the Start Installation and the computer rebooted.
    However, I have been stuck on a grey screen for about 45 minutes.  There is no Apple logo (there was one for the first minute of the reboot) and now there is a big no-smoking symbol (without the cigarette of course.  you know the symbol that is a circle with a line).  Beneath it is the spinning ball thingy saying it is doing something.
    Should I just let it run or try a hard restart?

    I think after weeks of searching I have finally narrowed it down, based on what I have read, to a disk drive problem. It seems to be something wrong with the EFI or the entire disk drive in general. I am taking it to the apple store tomorrow and I highly doubt they will do anything.
