Apple says they have fix for random shutdowns

I called Applecare today again, as I have been holding off on sending my machine in for the RSD problem. I have had less problems since locking and resetting the CPU, and wanted to wait to see if they would issue a statement on this problem. Today I was told "they know what the problem is, so send it in and it will be fixed". The woman I spoke with said she is not a technician so couldn't tell me what the problem/fix IS, but seemed quite sure of herself. Anyone else heard similar??

I called applecare yesterday for an update on my previous case regarding this issue. I told them the first time that I wasn't going to send it back until they identified a specific issue and came up with a fix due to the widespread nature of the problem. Yesterday, they said the fix was developed last week and that if I sent it in now, I will get that fix. He didn't know what the fix but we set it up to get repaired.
I don't know if he was just blowing smoke but I have to trust them at some point. I just hope it doesn't come back full of scratches. (after 14 days it did!!!, plus the dvd drive ate discs now. They sent me a new macbook so I wasn't able to really verify if the fix worked)
I also asked about parts involved in the fix that may be on backorder but he didn't think there was any due to the very few number of cases of this reported! He said he's never dealt with this type of issue before and I was the firt to report it to him.

    I agree and I found your post because I did a google search ical typeface dim.

    And they still won't replace the laptop for me worst buy ever but i have had a imac for 2 months and nothing at all wrong .

    You could try calling Apple and ask for Customer Relations.

  • Temp fix to random shutdown (plug AC/remove battery)

    I avoid this discussion board b/c of the hardcore fanboy-ism (rated members is a joke) but I want to drop off this temporary fix for random shutdowns:
    Plug in your power adapter and remove your battery.
    It seems to lock the cpu at 1ghz even at 100% load under the: "yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null" test.
    I have been running this test for over 30min now with no random shutdowns where before I could not survive the 1 minute mark.
    My cpu is now running at 1.0ghz/151F/100%.
    Try for yourself and post your results.

    Last week I got a new logic board for my MB. After two hours working the MB shut down again!
    I called Apple Care to get further informations and told them about the fix on macfixit.com the day before yesterday. And guess what... today my service provider have done the job!!!
    I have made some tests right now... over 2h running with 100% CPU usage at 1.83 GHz. Bofore the repair it shut down after 1 minute under same condition.
    It seems to be ok now. Tomorrow more reports....

    Pearson put out a tech note on this today - the new versions of Java are what's causing the problem. If you can use Time Machine to rollback java prior to a java 7 or 1.6.0_37 version that will get you going again. I've been searching for hours for a place to download the older version but it seems Apple's site and Oracle all only have the latest release. Still trying to see if I have a copy downloaded on a system that hasn;t been updated to copy off to a network drive or usb and install the older version on to systems.

    An update to Java for Mac OS X was released on October 16, 2012. An issue has been identified with this Java update (Java for OS X 2012-006) which prevents teachers from launching PowerTeacher Gradebook.
    Teachers using PowerTeacher Gradebook should avoid taking this Java update to version 1.6.0_37 until notified that PowerTeacher Gradebook has been certified with this latest version of Java 1.6 for Mac OS X. PowerTeacher Gradebook will continue to work on Mac OS X workstations with Java version 1.6.0_35.
      Additional communication will be provided once a workaround is identified or an updated version of PowerTeacher Gradebook is available.

    Since Firefox updated to version 27 the Norton Toolbar won't work. I have checked and I do have the latest version of Norton. The Norton site says they have applied a fix for FF 27. I have open and closed Firefox several times and re-booted my computer several times. What do I have to do to enable the Norton toolbar?

    You cannot. The apps are assigned to that Apple ID and there is nothing you can do to change that. You could choose to download them again with the new Apple ID, any paid apps will need to be purchased again.

    Ask the person who owns the iPhone.
    Which version of Cydia appears on the iPhone - the one
    with the black and white icon or a different one?
    If it was jailbroken, contact the developers of the jailbreak.
    Not all jailbreaks can be completely removed.
    Google may provide some direction.

    Apple's rules for their app store do not allow programs such as Firefox to be run on their iOS devices. We do have a tool to allow access to your Firefox Sync bookmarks and history on your iOS device.

    Just to add a couple of more things that you can try ... Along with what TMM suggested ....
    Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
    You can also try updating from the app description page rather than the Updates Tab. Do a search for the apps that needs to be updated - when it appears in the search - tap on the app icon. Then tap on Update or Install - whatever happens to appear next to the app icon - in the description page that pops up.
    You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.

    AppleCare technicians: A second fix for screen flickering affecting the hardware is due within 3 weeks.
    In a thread on the Apple Discussions forums that spans nearly 250 pages, users have begun to report conversations with AppleCare representatives who claim a new update is forthcoming. A month ago, Apple released a software fix for the flickering issue on the 27-inch iMac, but since then users have said it did not address the problem. One user, Dennis Murphy, said he was told that AppleCare technicians were issued a bulletin on Saturday that stated a fix would be released in about three weeks. The Apple employee was allegedly instructed to collect customer contact information so they can be reached when the fix is released.
    "This would clearly explain the extended shipping times we're seeing," Murphy wrote on the forums.
    Last week, Apple delayed shipment of new direct-order 27-inch iMacs by three weeks. Supply issues have persisted for months, with Apple in December apologizing for the delays.
    Another poster, GuiltyVerdict, wrote Saturday that an Apple representative told them a combination software and driver patch is due in roughly three weeks. "This will reportedly resolve the issue of the screen flickering (it is not hardware causing the issue)," the user wrote.
    The three weeks allegedly cited by AppleCare technicians would coincide with the existing three-week wait time for direct orders of 27-inch iMacs. However, when contacted by AppleInsider Monday, an Apple representative said the three-week delay was not related to any hardware issues. Instead, they said the company has had trouble meeting up with demand for the new system, as some components are in limited availability. Still others have indicated system's internal graphics card cable could be the culprit. User ferris666 said they spoke with a technician who said the problem with the cable could not be fixed with a firmware update, though the "simple fix" has been implemented in newly produced machines.
    While most of the reports are tied to the 27-inch model, there are also users who have experienced the same symptoms with the 21.5-inch model. When it debuted in October, the new iMac was the best-selling desktop in the U.S. for the month. Various issues were reported quickly, though the screen flickering has remained for some time.

    I am not the engineer that you requested, but I think that you are missing the boat with the question. The 27" iMac already accepts 1080p. Any new Mac with a mini-DisplayPort can connect with the 27" iMac with a simple and inexpensive m-DP to m-DP cable and drive the iMac's display at its full resolution, 2560x1440 pixels.
    So if this is a bassackwards way of inquiring about why an XBox or some other device is limited to 720p, it is because the adapter (~US$150) used limits the resolution to 720p. If you use a scaler (~US$299), which has its own graphics chip, instead of an adapter, then it can drive the iMac's display at 1080p.

  • Upgraded to Firefox4 and all my bookmarks are gone, I have tried all the solutions listed under lost book marks can someone please help me.. I have seen people say they have solved this but never tell how.

    As it says above I lost all my bookmarks after upgrading to Firefox 4.

    I even found a old backup and imported it and it did not work.
    I have seen several people say they have the same problem and have fixed it but never say how.. Please help

    I've encountered the same problem; I (reluctantly) upgraded Firefox after years of happily using version 2, and discovered that I should have, apparently, saved my bookmarks before updating.
    There is NO "places.sqlite" file anywhere on my hard drive.
    Following the procedure at https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost+Bookmarks#Restoring_bookmark_backups restores the bookmarks folder saved *today*. . . after Firefox reverted to a *two year old file* and saved it over my existing one. (How do I know it's two years old? It has house search information from before my toddler's birth, that's how.)
    There is no bookmarkbackups folder.
    Searches across my hard drive for the following files turn up nothing useful:
    * bookmarks.bak
    * bookmarks.html
    * bookmarks.html.moztmp
    * bookmarks-(date).html
    * bookmarks-(date).json
    Oh, there *is* a bookmarks.html file that's larger than the 7/2 one that's been created; it is, however, from a transfer from IE bookmarks dated 2006.
    None of the rest exit. Even searching for just the extension of .json turns up nothing.
    I really, really want my bookmarks back, and I am not thrilled about this; I trusted Firefox not to screw up on an upgrade, and that's the only reason I didn't make a backup before installing. Silly me.
